Spectrahedrality of hyperbolicity cones of multivariate matching polynomials

The generalized Lax conjecture asserts that each hyperbolicity cone is a linear slice of the cone of positive semidefinite matrices. We prove the conjecture for a multivariate generalization of the matching polynomial. This is further extended (albeit in a weaker sense) to a multivariate version of the independence polynomial for simplicial graphs. As an application we give a new proof of the conjecture for elementary symmetric polynomials (originally due to Brändén). Finally we consider a hyperbolic convolution of determinant polynomials generalizing an identity of Godsil and Gutman.
Large Values of the Clustering Coefficient

A prominent parameter in the context of network analysis, originally proposed by Watts and Strogatz (Collective dynamics of `small-world' networks, Nature 393 (1998) 440-442), is the clustering coefficient of a graph $G$. It is defined as the arithmetic mean of the clustering coefficients of its vertices, where the clustering coefficient of a vertex $u$ of $G$ is the relative density $m(G[N_G(u)])/{d_G(u)\choose 2}$ of its neighborhood if $d_G(u)$ is at least $2$, and $0$ otherwise. It is unknown which graphs maximize the clustering coefficient among all connected graphs of given order and size.
We determine the maximum clustering coefficients among all connected regular graphs of a given order, as well as among all connected subcubic graphs of a given order. In both cases, we characterize all extremal graphs. Furthermore, we determine the maximum increase of the clustering coefficient caused by adding a single edge.

Our goal is to investigate a close relative of the independent transversal problem in the class of infinite $K_n$-free graphs: we show that for any infinite $K_n$-free graph $G=(V,E)$ and $m\in \mathbb N$ there is a minimal $r=r(G,m)$ such that for any balanced $r$-colouring of the vertices of $G$ one can find an independent set which meets at least $m$ colour classes in a set of size $|V|$. Answering a conjecture of S. Thomassé, we express the exact value of $r(H_n,m)$ (using Ramsey-numbers for finite digraphs), where $H_n$ is Henson's countable universal homogeneous $K_n$-free graph. In turn, we deduce a new partition property of $H_n$ regarding balanced embeddings of bipartite graphs: for any finite bipartite $G$ with bipartition $A,B$, if the vertices of $H_n$ are partitioned into two infinite classes then there is an induced copy of $G$ in $H_n$ such that the images of $A$ and $B$ are contained in different classes.

Metacirculants are a basic and well-studied family of vertex-transitive graphs, and weak metacirculants are generalizations of them. A graph is called a weak metacirculant if it has a vertex-transitive metacyclic automorphism group. This paper is devoted to the study of weak metacirculants with odd prime power order. We first prove that a weak metacirculant of odd prime power order is a metacirculant if and only if it has a vertex-transitive split metacyclic automorphism group. We then prove that for any odd prime $p$ and integer $\ell\geq 4$, there exist weak metacirculants of order $p^\ell$ which are Cayley graphs but not Cayley graphs of any metacyclic group; this answers a question in Li et al. (2013). We construct such graphs explicitly by introducing a construction which is a generalization of generalized Petersen graphs. Finally, we determine all smallest possible metacirculants of odd prime power order which are Cayley graphs but not Cayley graphs of any metacyclic group.

A retract of a graph $Γ$ is an induced subgraph $Ψ$ of $Γ$ such that there exists a homomorphism from $Γ$ to $Ψ$ whose restriction to $Ψ$ is the identity map. A graph is a core if it has no nontrivial retracts. In general, the minimal retracts of a graph are cores and are unique up to isomorphism; they are called the core of the graph. A graph $Γ$ is $G$-symmetric if $G$ is a subgroup of the automorphism group of $Γ$ that is transitive on the vertex set and also transitive on the set of ordered pairs of adjacent vertices. If in addition the vertex set of $Γ$ admits a nontrivial partition that is preserved by $G$, then $Γ$ is an imprimitive $G$-symmetric graph. In this paper cores of imprimitive symmetric graphs $Γ$ of order a product of two distinct primes are studied. In many cases the core of $Γ$ is determined completely. In other cases it is proved that either $Γ$ is a core or its core is isomorphic to one of two graphs, and conditions on when each of these possibilities occurs is given.

The crossing number $cr(G)$ of a graph $G=(V,E)$ is the smallest number of edge crossings over all drawings of $G$ in the plane. For any $k\ge 1$, the $k$-planar crossing number of $G$, $cr_k(G)$, is defined as the minimum of $cr(G_0)+cr(G_1)+\ldots+cr(G_{k-1})$ over all graphs $G_0, G_1,\ldots, G_{k-1}$ with $\cup_{i=0}^{k-1}G_i=G$. It is shown that for every $k\ge 1$, we have $cr_k(G)\le \left(\frac{2}{k^2}-\frac1{k^3}\right)cr(G)$. This bound does not remain true if we replace the constant $\frac{2}{k^2}-\frac1{k^3}$ by any number smaller than $\frac1{k^2}$. Some of the results extend to the rectilinear variants of the $k$-planar crossing number.

Given a graph $H$ on vertex set $\{1,2,\cdots, n\}$ and a function $f:[0,1]^2 \rightarrow \mathbb{R}$, define \begin{align*} \|f\|_{H}:=\left\vert\int \prod_{ij\in E(H)}f(x_i,x_j)dμ^{|V(H)|}\right\vert^{1/|E(H)|}, \end{align*} where $μ$ is the Lebesgue measure on $[0,1]$. We say that $H$ is norming if $\|\cdot\|_H$ is a semi-norm. A similar notion $\|\cdot\|_{r(H)}$ is defined by $\|f\|_{r(H)}:=\||f|\|_{H}$ and $H$ is said to be weakly norming if $\|\cdot\|_{r(H)}$ is a norm. Classical results show that weakly norming graphs are necessarily bipartite. In the other direction, Hatami showed that even cycles, complete bipartite graphs, and hypercubes are all weakly norming. We demonstrate that any graph whose edges percolate in an appropriate way under the action of a certain natural family of automorphisms is weakly norming. This result includes all previously known examples of weakly norming graphs, but also allows us to identify a much broader class arising from finite reflection groups. We include several applications of our results. In particular, we define and compare a number of generalisations of Gowers' octahedral norms and we prove some new instances of Sidorenko's conjecture.

Brane tilings are infinite, bipartite, periodic, planar graphs that are dual to quivers. In this paper, we examine the del Pezzo 2 (dP$_2$) quiver and its brane tiling, which arise from the physics literature, in terms of toric mutations on its corresponding cluster. Specifically, we give explicit formulas for all cluster variables generated by toric mutation sequences. Moreover, for each such variable, we associate a subgraph of the dP$_2$ brane tiling to it such that its weight matches the variable.
Density of monochromatic infinite subgraphs

For any countably infinite graph $G$, Ramsey's theorem guarantees an infinite monochromatic copy of $G$ in any $r$-coloring of the edges of the countably infinite complete graph $K_\mathbb{N}$. Taking this a step further, it is natural to wonder how "large" of a monochromatic copy of $G$ we can find with respect to some measure -- for instance, the density (or upper density) of the vertex set of $G$ in the positive integers. Unlike finite Ramsey theory, where this question has been studied extensively, the analogous problem for infinite graphs has been mostly overlooked.
In one of the few results in the area, Erdős and Galvin proved that in every 2-coloring of $K_\mathbb{N}$, there exists a monochromatic path whose vertex set has upper density at least $2/3$, but it is not possible to do better than $8/9$. They also showed that for some sequence $ε_n\to 0$, there exists a monochromatic path $P$ such that for infinitely many $n$, the set $\{1,2,...,n\}$ contains the first $(\frac{1}{3+\sqrt{3}}-ε_n)n$ vertices of $P$, but it is not possible to do better than $2n/3$. We improve both results, in the former case achieving an upper density at least $3/4$ and in the latter case obtaining a tight bound of $2/3$. We also consider related problems for directed paths, trees (connected subgraphs), and a more general result which includes locally finite graphs for instance.

We prove that every graph with sufficiently large minimum degree $d$ contains a spanning forest in which every component is a star of size at least $\sqrt{d} - \tilde O(d^{1/4})$. This improves the result of Alon and Wormald and is optimal up to the lower order term.
Pfaffians and nonintersecting paths in graphs with cycles: Grassmann algebra methods

After recalling the definition of Grassmann algebra and elements of Grassmann--Berezin calculus, we use the expression of Pfaffians as Grassmann integrals to generalize a series of formulas relating generating functions of paths in digraphs to Pfaffians. We start with the celebrated Lindström-Gessel-Viennot formula, which we derive in the general case of a graph with cycles. We then make further use of Grassmann algebraic tools to prove a generalization of the results of (Stembridge 1990). Our results, which are applicable to graphs with cycles, are formulated in terms of systems of nonintersecting paths and nonintersecting cycles in digraphs.
p-th Kazdan-Warner equation on graph
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a connected finite graph and $C(V)$ be the set of functions defined on $V$. Let $Δ_p$ be the discrete $p$-Laplacian on $G$ with $p>1$ and $L=Δ_p-k$, where $k\in C(V)$ is positive everywhere. Consider the operator $L:C(V)\rightarrow C(V)$. We prove that $-L$ is one to one, onto and preserves order. So it implies that there exists a unique solution to the equation $Lu=f$ for any given $f\in C(V)$. We also prove that the equation $Δ_pu=\overline{f}-f$ has a solution which is unique up to a constant, where $\overline{f}$ is the average of $f$. With the help of these results, we finally give various conditions such that the $p$-th Kazdan-Warner equation $Δ_pu=c-he^u$ has a solution on $V$ for given $h\in C(V)$ and $c\in \mathds{R}$. Thus we generalize Grigor'yan, Lin and Yang's work \cite{GLY} for $p=2$ to any $p>1$.

Assume $α\geq p>1$. Consider the following $p$-th Yamabe equation on a connected finite graph $G$: $$Δ_p\varphi+h\varphi^{p-1}=λf\varphi^{α-1},$$ where $Δ_p$ is the discrete $p$-Laplacian, $h$ and $f>0$ are fixed real functions defined on all vertices. We show that the above equation always has a positive solution $\varphi$ for some constant $λ\in\mathds{R}$.
Scaling Laws for Maximum Coloring of Random Geometric Graphs

We examine maximum vertex coloring of random geometric graphs, in an arbitrary but fixed dimension, with a constant number of colors. Since this problem is neither scale-invariant nor smooth, the usual methodology to obtain limit laws cannot be applied. We therefore leverage different concepts based on subadditivity to establish convergence laws for the maximum number of vertices that can be colored. For the constants that appear in these results, we provide the exact value in dimension one, and upper and lower bounds in higher dimensions.

The subdivision graph $S(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the graph obtained by inserting a new vertex into every edge of $G$. In $\cite{PL}$, two classes of new corona graphs, the corona-vertex of the subdivision graph $G_{1}\diamondsuit G_{2}$ and corona-edge of the subdivision graph $G_{1}\star G_{2}$ were defined. The adjacency spectrum and the signless Laplacian spectrum of the two new graphs were computed when $G_{1}$ is an arbitrary graph and $G_{2}$ is an $r$-regular graph. In this paper, we give the formulate of the resistance distance and the Kirchhoff index in $G_{1}\diamondsuit G_{2}$ and $G_{1}\star G_{2}$ when $G_{1}$ and $G_{2}$ are arbitrary graphs. These results generalize them in $\cite{PL}$.
New Characterisations of Tree-Based Networks and Proximity Measures

Phylogenetic networks are a type of directed acyclic graph that represent how a set $X$ of present-day species are descended from a common ancestor by processes of speciation and reticulate evolution. In the absence of reticulate evolution, such networks are simply phylogenetic (evolutionary) trees. Moreover, phylogenetic networks that are not trees can sometimes be represented as phylogenetic trees with additional directed edges placed between their edges. Such networks are called {\em tree based}, and the class of phylogenetic networks that are tree based has recently been characterised. In this paper, we establish a number of new characterisations of tree-based networks in terms of path partitions and antichains (in the spirit of Dilworth's theorem), as well as via matchings in a bipartite graph. We also show that a temporal network is tree based if and only if it satisfies an antichain-to-leaf condition. In the second part of the paper, we define three indices that measure the extent to which an arbitrary phylogenetic network deviates from being tree based. We describe how these three indices can be described exactly and computed efficiently using classical results concerning maximum-sized matchings in bipartite graphs.
Properties of chromatic polynomials of hypergraphs not held for chromatic polynomials of graphs

In this paper, we present some properties on chromatic polynomials of hypergraphs which do not hold for chromatic polynomials of graphs. We first show that chromatic polynomials of hypergraphs have all integers as their zeros and contain dense real zeros in the set of real numbers. We then prove that for any multigraph $G=(V,E)$, the number of totally cyclic orientations of $G$ is equal to the value of $|P(H,-1)|$, where $P(H,λ)$ is the chromatic polynomial of a hypergraph $H$ which is constructed from $G$. Finally we show that the multiplicity of root "$0$" of $P(H,λ)$ may be at least $2$ for some connected hypergraphs $H$, and the multiplicity of root "$1$" of $P(H,λ)$ may be $1$ for some connected and separable hypergraphs $H$ and may be $2$ for some connected and non-separable hypergraphs $H$.

The interplay between groups and graphs have been the most famous and productive area of algebraic graph theory. In this paper, we introduce and study the graphs whose vertex set is group G such that two distinct vertices a and b having different orders are adjacent provided that o(a) divides o(b) or o(b) divides o(a).

Let $G=(V,E)$ be a connected graph. A vertex $w\in V$ distinguishes two elements (vertices or edges) $x,y\in E\cup V$ if $d_G(w,x)\ne d_G(w,y)$. A set $S$ of vertices in a connected graph $G$ is a mixed metric generator for $G$ if every two elements (vertices or edges) of $G$ are distinguished by some vertex of $S$. The smallest cardinality of a mixed metric generator for $G$ is called the mixed metric dimension and is denoted by $\mathrm{mdim}(G)$. In this paper we consider the structure of mixed metric generators and characterize graphs for which the mixed metric dimension equals the trivial lower and upper bounds. We also give results about the mixed metric dimension of some families of graphs and present an upper bound with respect to the girth of a graph. Finally, we prove that the problem of determining the mixed metric dimension of a graph is NP-hard in the general case.
