Polytopality of Maniplexes
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given an abstract polytope $\cal P$, its flag graph is the edge-coloured graph whose vertices are the flags of $\cal P$ and the $i$-edges correspond to $i$-adjacent flags. Flag graphs of polytopes are maniplexes. On the other hand, given a maniplex $\cal M$, on can define a poset $\cal P_M$ by means of the non empty intersection of its faces. In this paper we give necessary and sufficient conditions (in terms of graphs) on a maniplex $\cal M$ in order for $\cal P_M$ to be an abstract polytope. Moreover, in such case, we show that $\cal M$ is isomorphic to the flag graph of $\cal P_M$. This in turn gives necessary and sufficient conditions for a maniplex to be (isomorphic to) the flag graph of a polytope.

The Closure Operator of es-Splitting Matroids
Published • View Publication • BIB
The es-splitting operation for binary matroids is a natural generalization of Slater's n-line splitting operation on graphs. In this paper, we characterize the closure operator of the es-splitting binary matroid $M^e_X$ in terms of the closure operator of the original binary matroid $M$. We also characterize the flats of the es-splitting binary matroid $M^e_X$ in terms of the flats of the original binary matroid $M$.

Multiplicative Zagreb indices of cacti
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $\prod(G)$ be Multiplicative Zagreb index of a graph G. A connected graph is a cactus graph if and only if any two of its cycles have at most one vertex in common, which has been the interest of researchers in the filed of material chemistry and graph theory. In this paper, we use a new tool to the obtain upper and lower bounds of $\prod(G)$ for all cactus graphs and characterize the corresponding extremal graphs.

On regularity lemmas and their algorithmic applications
Published in Combin. Probab. Comput. 26 (2017), 481--505 • View Publication • BIB
Szemerédi's regularity lemma and its variants are some of the most powerful tools in combinatorics. In this paper, we establish several results around the regularity lemma. First, we prove that whether or not we include the condition that the desired vertex partition in the regularity lemma is equitable has a minimal effect on the number of parts of the partition. Second, we use an algorithmic version of the (weak) Frieze--Kannan regularity lemma to give a substantially faster deterministic approximation algorithm for counting subgraphs in a graph. Previously, only an exponential dependence for the running time on the error parameter was known, and we improve it to a polynomial dependence. Third, we revisit the problem of finding an algorithmic regularity lemma, giving approximation algorithms for several co-NP-complete problems. We show how to use the weak Frieze--Kannan regularity lemma to approximate the regularity of a pair of vertex subsets. We also show how to quickly find, for each $ε'>ε$, an $ε'$-regular partition with $k$ parts if there exists an $ε$-regular partition with $k$ parts. Finally, we give a simple proof of the permutation regularity lemma which improves the tower-type bound on the number of parts in the previous proofs to a single exponential bound.

Characterizations of the Connected Forcing Number of a Graph
Zero forcing is a dynamic graph coloring process whereby a colored vertex with a single uncolored neighbor forces that neighbor to be colored. This forcing process has been used to approximate certain linear algebraic parameters, as well as to model the spread of diseases and information in social networks. In this paper, we introduce and study the connected forcing process -- a restriction of zero forcing in which the initially colored set of vertices induces a connected subgraph. We show that the connected forcing number -- the cardinality of the smallest initially colored vertex set which forces the entire graph to be colored -- is a sharp upper bound to the maximum nullity, path cover number, and leaf number of the graph. We also give closed formulas and bounds for the connected forcing numbers of several families of graphs including trees, hypercubes, and flower snarks, and characterize graphs with extremal connected forcing numbers.

Hamilton cycles, minimum degree and bipartite holes
Published • View Publication • BIB
We present a tight extremal threshold for the existence of Hamilton cycles in graphs with large minimum degree and without a large ``bipartite hole`` (two disjoint sets of vertices with no edges between them). This result extends Dirac's classical theorem, and is related to a theorem of Chvátal and Erdős. In detail, an $(s, t)$-bipartite-hole in a graph $G$ consists of two disjoint sets of vertices $S$ and $T$ with $|S|= s$ and $|T|=t$ such that there are no edges between $S$ and $T$; and $\widetildeα(G)$ is the maximum integer $r$ such that $G$ contains an $(s, t)$-bipartite-hole for every pair of non-negative integers $s$ and $t$ with $s + t = r$. Our central theorem is that a graph $G$ with at least $3$ vertices is Hamiltonian if its minimum degree is at least $\widetildeα(G)$. From the proof we obtain a polynomial time algorithm that either finds a Hamilton cycle or a large bipartite hole. The theorem also yields a condition for the existence of $k$ edge-disjoint Hamilton cycles. We see that for dense random graphs $G(n,p)$, the probability of failing to contain many edge-disjoint Hamilton cycles is $(1 - p)^{(1 + o(1))n}$. Finally, we discuss the complexity of calculating and approximating $\widetildeα(G)$.

Random Perfect Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We investigate the asymptotic structure of a random perfect graph $P_n$ sampled uniformly from the perfect graphs on vertex set $\{1,\ldots,n\}$. Our approach is based on the result of Prömel and Steger that almost all perfect graphs are generalised split graphs, together with a method to generate such graphs almost uniformly. We show that the distribution of the maximum of the stability number $α(P_n)$ and clique number $ω(P_n)$ is close to a concentrated distribution $L(n)$ which plays an important role in our generation method. We also prove that the probability that $P_n$ contains any given graph $H$ as an induced subgraph is asymptotically $0$ or $\frac12$ or $1$. Further we show that almost all perfect graphs are $2$-clique-colourable, improving a result of Bacsó et al from 2004; they are almost all Hamiltonian; they almost all have connectivity $κ(P_n)$ equal to their minimum degree; they are almost all in class one (edge-colourable using $Δ$ colours, where $Δ$ is the maximum degree); and a sequence of independently and uniformly sampled perfect graphs of increasing size converges almost surely to the graphon $W_P(x, y) = \frac12(\mathbb{1}[x \le 1/2] + \mathbb{1}[y \le 1/2])$.

Polarity and Monopolarity of $3$-colourable comparability graphs
We sharpen the result that polarity and monopolarity are NP-complete problems by showing that they remain NP-complete if the input graph is restricted to be a $3$-colourable comparability graph. We start by presenting a construction reducing $1$-$3$-SAT to monopolarity of $3$-colourable comparability graphs. Then we show that polarity is at least as hard as monopolarity for input graphs restricted to a fixed disjoint-union-closed class. We conclude the paper by stating that both polarity and monopolarity of $3$-colourable comparability graphs are NP-complete problems.

Symbolic powers of cover ideal of very well-covered and bipartite graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a graph with $n$ vertices and $S=\mathbb{K}[x_1,\dots,x_n]$ be the polynomial ring in $n$ variables over a field $\mathbb{K}$. Assume that $J(G)$ is the cover ideal of $G$ and $J(G)^{(k)}$ is its $k$-th symbolic power. We prove that if $G$ is a very well-covered graph such that $J(G)$ has linear resolution, then $J(G)^{(k)}$ has linear resolution, for every integer $k\geq 1$. We also prove that for a every very well-covered graph $G$, the depth of symbolic powers of $J(G)$ forms a non-increasing sequence. Finally, we determine a linear upper bound for the regularity of powers of cover ideal of bipartite graph.

Depth, Stanley depth and regularity of ideals associated to graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $\mathbb{K}$ be a field and $S=\mathbb{K}[x_1,\dots,x_n]$ be the polynomial ring in $n$ variables over $\mathbb{K}$. Let $G$ be a graph with $n$ vertices. Assume that $I=I(G)$ is the edge ideal of $G$ and $J=J(G)$ is its cover ideal. We prove that ${\rm sdepth}(J)\geq n-ν_{o}(G)$ and ${\rm sdepth}(S/J)\geq n-ν_{o}(G)-1$, where $ν_{o}(G)$ is the ordered matching number of $G$. We also prove the inequalities ${\rm sdepth}(J^k)\geq {\rm depth}(J^k)$ and ${\rm sdepth}(S/J^k)\geq {\rm depth}(S/J^k)$, for every integer $k\gg 0$, when $G$ is a bipartite graph. Moreover, we provide an elementary proof for the known inequality ${\rm reg}(S/I)\leq ν_{o}(G)$.

New extremal binary self-dual codes of lengths 64 and 66 from bicubic planar graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this work, connected cubic planar bipartite graphs and related binary self-dual codes are studied. Binary self-dual codes of length 16 are obtained by face-vertex incidence matrices of these graphs. By considering their lifts to the ring R_2 new extremal binary self-dual codes of lengths 64 are constructed as Gray images. More precisely, we construct 15 new codes of length 64. Moreover, 10 new codes of length 66 were obtained by applying a building-up construction to the binary codes. Codes with these weight enumerators are constructed for the first time in the literature. The results are tabulated.

Minimal obstructions for tree-depth: A non-1-unique example
A k-ranking of a graph G is a labeling of the vertices of G with values from 1,...,k such that any path joining two vertices with the same label contains a vertex having a higher label. The tree-depth of G is the smallest value of k for which a k-ranking of G exists. The graph G is k-critical if it has tree-depth k and every proper minor of G has smaller tree-depth. As defined in [M. D. Barrus, J. Sinkovic, Uniqueness and minimal obstructions for tree-depth, Discrete Math 339 (2) (2015) 606-613], a graph G is 1-unique if for every vertex v in G, there exists an optimal ranking of G in which v is the unique vertex with label 1. In the above paper and [M. D. Barrus, J. Sinkovic, Classes of critical graphs for tree-depth, arXiv:1502.0577] the authors showed that several classes of critical graphs are 1-unique and asked whether all critical graphs have this property. We answer in the negative by demonstrating an infinite family of graphs which are critical but not 1-unique.
Decomposing graphs into a constant number of locally irregular subgraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A graph is locally irregular if no two adjacent vertices have the same degree. The irregular chromatic index $χ_{\rm irr}'(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the smallest number of locally irregular subgraphs needed to edge-decompose $G$. Not all graphs have such a decomposition, but Baudon, Bensmail, Przybyło, and Woźniak conjectured that if $G$ can be decomposed into locally irregular subgraphs, then $χ_{\rm irr}'(G)\leq 3$. In support of this conjecture, Przybyło showed that $χ_{\rm irr}'(G)\leq 3$ holds whenever $G$ has minimum degree at least $10^{10}$. Here we prove that every bipartite graph $G$ which is not an odd length path satisfies $χ_{\rm irr}'(G)\leq 10$. This is the first general constant upper bound on the irregular chromatic index of bipartite graphs. Combining this result with Przybyło's result, we show that $χ_{\rm irr}'(G) \leq 328$ for every graph $G$ which admits a decomposition into locally irregular subgraphs. Finally, we show that $χ_{\rm irr}'(G)\leq 2$ for every $16$-edge-connected bipartite graph $G$.
12, 24 and Beyond

We generalize the well-known "12" and "24" Theorems for reflexive polytopes of dimension 2 and 3 to any smooth reflexive polytope. Our methods apply to a wider category of objects, here called reflexive GKM graphs, that are associated with certain monotone symplectic manifolds which do not necessarily admit a toric action. As an application, we provide bounds on the Betti numbers for certain monotone Hamiltonian spaces which depend on the minimal Chern number of the manifold.

On universal quadratic identities for minors of quantum matrices
Published • View Publication • BIB
We give a complete combinatorial characterization of homogeneous quadratic relations of "universal character" valid for minors of quantum matrices (more precisely, for minors in the quantized coordinate ring $O_q(M_{m,n}(K))$ of $m\times n$ matrices over a field $K$, where $q\in K^\ast$). This is obtained as a consequence of a study of quantized minors of matrices generated by paths in certain planar graphs, called SE-graphs, generalizing the ones associated with Cauchon diagrams. Our efficient method of verifying universal quadratic identities for minors of quantum matrices is illustrated with many appealing examples.

On Dirac's Conjecture
Let $G$ be a 2-connected graph, $l$ be the length of a longest path in $G$ and $c$ be the circumference - the length of a longest cycle in $G$. In 1952, Dirac proved that $c>\sqrt{2l}$ and conjectured that $c\ge 2\sqrt{l}$. In this paper we present more general sharp bounds in terms of $l$ and the length $m$ of a vine on a longest path in $G$ including Dirac's conjecture as a corollary: if $c=m+y+2$ (generally, $c\ge m+y+2$) for some integer $y\ge 0$, then $c\ge\sqrt{4l+(y+1)^2}$ if $m$ is odd; and $c\ge\sqrt{4l+(y+1)^2-1}$ if $m$ is even.

Some results on chromatic number as a function of triangle count
Published in SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics 33(1), pp. 546-563 (2019) • View Publication • BIB
A variety of powerful extremal results have been shown for the chromatic number of triangle-free graphs. Three noteworthy bounds are in terms of the number of vertices, edges, and maximum degree given by Poljak \& Tuza (1994), and Johansson. There have been comparatively fewer works extending these types of bounds to graphs with a small number of triangles. One noteworthy exception is a result of Alon et. al (1999) bounding the chromatic number for graphs with low degree and few triangles per vertex; this bound is nearly the same as for triangle-free graphs. This type of parametrization is much less rigid, and has appeared in dozens of combinatorial constructions. In this paper, we show a similar type of result for $χ(G)$ as a function of the number of vertices $n$, the number of edges $m$, as well as the triangle count (both local and global measures). Our results smoothly interpolate between the generic bounds true for all graphs and bounds for triangle-free graphs. Our results are tight for most of these cases; we show how an open problem regarding fractional chromatic number and degeneracy in triangle-free graphs can resolve the small remaining gap in our bounds.
