Measurement Isomorphism of Graphs
The d-measurement set of a graph is its set of possible squared edge lengths over all d-dimensional embeddings. In this note, we define a new notion of graph isomorphism called d-measurement isomorphism. Two graphs are d-measurement isomorphic if there is agreement in their d-measurement sets. A natural question to ask is "what can be said about two graphs that are d-measurement isomorphic?" In this note, we show that this property coincides with the 2-isomorphism property studied by Whitney.

Signed a-polynomials of graphs and Poincaré polynomials of real toric manifolds
Published in Bulletin of the Korean Mathematical Society, 52(2), 467-481, 2015 • View Publication • BIB
Recently, Choi and Park introduced an invariant of a finite simple graph, called signed a-number, arising from computing certain topological invariants of some specific kinds of real toric manifolds. They also found the signed a-numbers of path graphs, cycle graphs, complete graphs, and star graphs. We introduce a signed a-polynomial which is a generalization of the signed a-number and gives a-, b-, and c-numbers. The signed a-polynomial of a graph $G$ is related to the Poincaré polynomial $P_{M(G)}(z)$, which is the generating function for the Betti numbers of the real toric manifold $M(G)$. We give the generating functions for the signed a-polynomials of not only path graphs, cycle graphs, complete graphs, and star graphs, but also complete bipartite graphs and complete multipartite graphs. As a consequence, we find the Euler characteristic number and the Betti numbers of the real toric manifold $M(G)$ for complete multipartite graphs $G$.

Rainbow triangles in edge-colored graphs
Published in European J. Combin. 36 (2014), 453--459 • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be an edge-colored graph. The color degree of a vertex $v$ of $G$, is defined as the number of colors of the edges incident to $v$. The color number of $G$ is defined as the number of colors of the edges in $G$. A rainbow triangle is one in which every pair of edges have distinct colors. In this paper we give some sufficient conditions for the existence of rainbow triangles in edge-colored graphs in terms of color degree, color number and edge number. As a corollary, a conjecture proposed by Li and Wang (Color degree and heterochromatic cycles in edge-colored graphs, European J. Combin. 33 (2012) 1958--1964) is confirmed.

The Weight Distribution of a Class of Cyclic Codes Related to Hermitian Forms Graphs
Published in IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, 59 (2013), 3064-3067 • View Publication • BIB
The determination of weight distribution of cyclic codes involves evaluation of Gauss sums and exponential sums. Despite of some cases where a neat expression is available, the computation is generally rather complicated. In this note, we determine the weight distribution of a class of reducible cyclic codes whose dual codes may have arbitrarily many zeros. This goal is achieved by building an unexpected connection between the corresponding exponential sums and the spectrums of Hermitian forms graphs.
2-connecting Outerplanar Graphs without Blowing Up the Pathwidth
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a connected outerplanar graph G of pathwidth p, we give an algorithm to add edges to G to get a supergraph of G, which is 2-vertex-connected, outerplanar and of pathwidth O(p). This settles an open problem raised by Biedl, in the context of computing minimum height planar straight line drawings of outerplanar graphs, with their vertices placed on a two dimensional grid. In conjunction with the result of this paper, the constant factor approximation algorithm for this problem obtained by Biedl for 2-vertex-connected outerplanar graphs will work for all outer planar graphs.

Complete Intersection Toric Ideals of Oriented Graphs and Chorded-Theta Subgraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a finite, simple graph. We consider for each oriented graph $G_{\cal O}$ associated to an orientation ${\cal O}$ of the edges of $G$, the toric ideal $P_{G_{\cal O}}$. In this paper we study those graphs with the property that $P_{G_{\cal O}}$ is a binomial complete intersection, for all ${\cal O}$. These graphs are called $\text{CI}{\cal O}$ graphs. We prove that these graphs can be constructed recursively as clique-sums of cycles and/or complete graphs. We introduce the chorded-theta subgraphs and their transversal triangles. Also we establish that the $\text{CI}{\cal O}$ graphs are determined by the property that each chorded-theta has a transversal triangle. As a consequence, we obtain that the tournaments hold this property. Finally we explicitly give the minimal forbidden induced subgraphs that characterize these graphs, these families of graphs are: prisms, pyramids, thetas and a particular family of wheels that we call $θ-$partial wheels.

Rainbow $k$-connectivity of random bipartite graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A path in an edge-colored graph $G$ is called a rainbow path if no two edges of the path are colored the same. The minimum number of colors required to color the edges of $G$ such that every pair of vertices are connected by at least $k$ internally vertex-disjoint rainbow paths is called the rainbow $k$-connectivity of the graph $G$, denoted by $rc_k(G)$. For the random graph $G(n,p)$, He and Liang got a sharp threshold function for the property $rc_k(G(n,p))\leq d$. In this paper, we extend this result to the case of random bipartite graph $G(m,n,p)$.

Universal point sets for planar three-tree
Published • View Publication • BIB
For every $n\in \mathbb{N}$, we present a set $S_n$ of $O(n^{3/2}\log n)$ points in the plane such that every planar 3-tree with $n$ vertices has a straight-line embedding in the plane in which the vertices are mapped to a subset of $S_n$. This is the first subquadratic upper bound on the size of universal point sets for planar 3-trees, as well as for the class of 2-trees and serial parallel graphs.

Laplacian ideals, arrangements, and resolutions
Published in J. Algebraic Combin. Volume 40, Issue 3 (2014), pp. 805 - 822 • View Publication • BIB
The Laplacian matrix of a graph G describes the combinatorial dynamics of the Abelian Sandpile Model and the more general Riemann-Roch theory of G. The lattice ideal associated to the lattice generated by the columns of the Laplacian provides an algebraic perspective on this recently (re)emerging field. This ideal I_G has a distinguished monomial initial ideal M_G, characterized by the property that the standard monomials are in bijection with the G-parking functions of the graph G. The ideal M_G was also introduced by Postnikov and Shapiro (2004) in the context of monotone monomial ideals. We study resolutions of M_G and show that a minimal free cellular resolution is supported on the bounded subcomplex of a section of the graphical arrangement of G. This generalizes constructions from Postnikov and Shapiro (for the case of the complete graph) and connects to work of Manjunath and Sturmfels, and of Perkinson et al. on the commutative algebra of Sandpiles. As a corollary we verify a conjecture of Perkinson et al. regarding the Betti numbers of M_G, and in the process provide a combinatorial characterization in terms of acyclic orientations.

Perfect partition of some regular bipartite graphs
A graph has a perfect partition if all its perfect matchings can be partitioned so that each part is a 1-factorization of the graph. Let $L_{rm, r}=K_{rm,rm}-mK_{r,r}$. We first give a formula to count the number of perfect matchings of $L_{rm, r}$, then show that $L_{6,1}$ and $L_{8,2}$ have perfect partitions.

Some Bounds on the Rainbow Connection Number of 3-, 4- and 5-connected Graphs
The rainbow connection number, $rc(G)$, of a connected graph $G$ is the minimum number of colors needed to color its edges so that every pair of vertices is connected by at least one path in which no two edges are colored the same. We show that for $κ=3$ or $κ= 4$, every $κ$-connected graph $G$ on $n$ vertices with diameter $\frac{n}κ-c$ satisfies $rc(G) \leq \frac{n}κ + 15c + 18$. We also show that for every maximal planar graph $G$, $rc(G) \leq \frac{n}κ + 36$. This proves a conjecture of Li et al. for graphs with large diameter and maximal planar graphs.

A Canonical Characterization of the Family of Barriers in General Graphs
Given a graph, a barrier is a set of vertices determined by the Berge formula---the min-max theorem characterizing the size of maximum matchings. The notion of barriers plays important roles in numerous contexts of matching theory, since barriers essentially coincides with dual optimal solutions of the maximum matching problem. In a special class of graphs called the elementary graphs, the family of maximal barriers forms a partition of the vertices; this partition was found by Lovász and is called the canonical partition. The canonical partition has produced many fundamental results in matching theory, such as the two ear theorem. However, in non-elementary graphs, the family of maximal barriers never forms a partition, and there has not been the canonical partition for general graphs. In this paper, using our previous work, we give a canonical description of structures of the odd-maximal barriers---a class of barriers including the maximal barriers---for general graphs; we also reveal structures of odd components associated with odd-maximal barriers. This result of us can be regarded as a generalization of Lovász's canonical partition.
On terminal forms for topological polynomials for ribbon graphs: The $N$-petal flower
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics 36, February 2014, p.348-366 • View Publication • BIB
The Bollobas-Riordan polynomial [Math. Ann. 323, 81 (2002)] extends the Tutte polynomial and its contraction/deletion rule for ordinary graphs to ribbon graphs. Given a ribbon graph $\cG$, the related polynomial should be computable from the knowledge of the terminal forms of $\cG$ namely specific induced graphs for which the contraction/deletion procedure becomes more involved. We consider some classes of terminal forms as rosette ribbon graphs with $N\ge 1$ petals and solve their associate Bollobas-Riordan polynomial. This work therefore enlarges the list of terminal forms for ribbon graphs for which the Bollobas-Riordan polynomial could be directly deduced.

Lifting Constructions of Strongly Regular Cayley Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We give two "lifting" constructions of strongly regular Cayley graphs. In the first construction we "lift" a cyclotomic strongly regular graph by using a subdifference set of the Singer difference set. The second construction uses quadratic forms over finite fields and it is a common generalization of the construction of the affine polar graphs \cite{CK86} and a construction of strongly regular Cayley graphs given in \cite{FWXY}. The two constructions are related in the following way: The second construction can be viewed as a recursive construction, and the strongly regular Cayley graphs obtained from the first construction can serve as starters for the second construction. We also obtain association schemes from the second construction.

Standard 2D Crystalline Patterns and Rational Points in Complex Quadrics
A certain Diophantine problem and 2D crystallography are linked through the notion of standard realizations which was introduced originally in the study of random walks. In the discussion, a complex projective quadric defined over Q is associated with a finite graph. "Rational points" on this quadric turns out to be related to standard realizations of 2D crystal structures.
Assembling crystals of type A
Published • View Publication • BIB
Regular $A_n$-crystals are certain edge-colored directed graphs which are related to representations of the quantized universal enveloping algebra $U_q(\mathfrak{sl}_{n+1})$. For such a crystal $K$ with colors $1,2,...,n$, we consider its maximal connected subcrystals with colors $1,...,n-1$ and with colors $2,...,n$ and characterize the interlacing structure for all pairs of these subcrystals. This is used to give a recursive description of the combinatorial structure of $K$ and develop an efficient procedure of assembling $K$.

Embeddings of *-graphs into 2-surfaces
Published • View Publication • BIB
This paper considers *-graphs in which all vertices have degree 4 or 6, and studies the question of calculating the genus of orientable 2-surfaces into which such graphs may be embedded. A *-graph is a graph endowed with a formal adjacency structure on the half-edges around each vertex, and an embedding of a *-graph is an embedding under which the formal adjacency relation on half-edges corresponds to the adjacency relation induced by the embedding. *-graphs are a natural generalization of four-valent framed graphs, which are four-valent graphs with an opposite half-edge structure. In [5], the question of whether a four-valent framed graph admits a Z2-homologically trivial embedding into a given surface was shown to be equivalent to a problem on matrices. We show that a similar result holds for *-graphs in which all vertices have degree 4 or 6. This gives an algorithm in quadratic time to determine whether a *-graph admits an embedding into the plane.
