Searching for Realizations of Finite Metric Spaces in Tight Spans
Published in Discrete Optimization 10 (2013), no. 4, 310-319 • View Publication • BIB
An important problem that commonly arises in areas such as internet traffic-flow analysis, phylogenetics and electrical circuit design, is to find a representation of any given metric $D$ on a finite set by an edge-weighted graph, such that the total edge length of the graph is minimum over all such graphs. Such a graph is called an optimal realization and finding such realizations is known to be NP-hard. Recently Varone presented a heuristic greedy algorithm for computing optimal realizations. Here we present an alternative heuristic that exploits the relationship between realizations of the metric $D$ and its so-called tight span $T_D$. The tight span $T_D$ is a canonical polytopal complex that can be associated to $D$, and our approach explores parts of $T_D$ for realizations in a way that is similar to the classical simplex algorithm. We also provide computational results illustrating the performance of our approach for different types of metrics, including $l_1$-distances and two-decomposable metrics for which it is provably possible to find optimal realizations in their tight spans.
Towards a weighted version of the Hajnal-Szemerédi Theorem
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a positive integer r>=2, a K_r-factor of a graph is a collection vertex-disjoint copies of K_r which covers all the vertices of the given graph. The celebrated theorem of Hajnal and Szemerédi asserts that every graph on n vertices with minimum degree at least (1-1/r)n contains a K_r-factor. In this note, we propose investigating the relation between minimum degree and existence of perfect K_r-packing for edge-weighted graphs. The main question we study is the following. Suppose that a positive integer r>=2 and a real t in [0,1] is given. What is the minimum weighted degree of K_n that guarantees the existence of a K_r-factor such that every factor has total edge weight at least tr(r-1)/2? We provide some lower and upper bounds and make a conjecture on the asymptotics of the threshold as n goes to infinity.

Combined degree and connectivity conditions for H-linked graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a given multigraph H, a graph G is H-linked, if |G| \geq |H| and for every injective map τ: V (H) \rightarrow V (G), we can find internally disjoint paths in G, such that every edge from uv in H corresponds to a τ (u) - τ (v) path. To guarantee that a G is H-linked, you need a minimum degree larger than |G|/2. This situation changes, if you know that G has a certain connectivity k. Depending on k, even a minimum degree independent of |G| may suffice. Let δ(k, H, N) be the minimum number, such that every k-connected graph G with |G| = N and δ(G) \geq δ(k, H, N) is H-linked. We study bounds for this quantity. In particular, we find bounds for all multigraphs H with at most three edges, which are optimal up to small additive or multiplicative constants.

k-Connectivity in Random Key Graphs with Unreliable Links
Published • View Publication • BIB
Random key graphs form a class of random intersection graphs and are naturally induced by the random key predistribution scheme of Eschenauer and Gligor for securing wireless sensor network (WSN) communications. Random key graphs have received much interest recently, owing in part to their wide applicability in various domains including recommender systems, social networks, secure sensor networks, clustering and classification analysis, and cryptanalysis to name a few. In this paper, we study connectivity properties of random key graphs in the presence of unreliable links. Unreliability of the edges are captured by independent Bernoulli random variables, rendering edges of the graph to be on or off independently from each other. The resulting model is an intersection of a random key graph and an Erdos-Renyi graph, and is expected to be useful in capturing various real-world networks; e.g., with secure WSN applications in mind, link unreliability can be attributed to harsh environmental conditions severely impairing transmissions. We present conditions on how to scale this model's parameters so that i) the minimum node degree in the graph is at least k, and ii) the graph is k-connected, both with high probability as the number of nodes becomes large. The results are given in the form of zeroone laws with critical thresholds identified and shown to coincide for both graph properties. These findings improve the previous results by Rybarczyk on the k-connectivity of random key graphs (with reliable links), as well as the zero-one laws by Yagan on the 1-connectivity of random key graphs with unreliable links.

Acyclic edge-coloring using entropy compression
Published in European J. Combin. 34(6) (2013), 1019-1027 • View Publication • BIB
An edge-coloring of a graph G is acyclic if it is a proper edge-coloring of G and every cycle contains at least three colors. We prove that every graph with maximum degree Delta has an acyclic edge-coloring with at most 4 Delta - 4 colors, improving the previous bound of 9.62 (Delta - 1). Our bound results from the analysis of a very simple randomised procedure using the so-called entropy compression method. We show that the expected running time of the procedure is O(mn Delta^2 log Delta), where n and m are the number of vertices and edges of G. Such a randomised procedure running in expected polynomial time was only known to exist in the case where at least 16 Delta colors were available. Our aim here is to make a pedagogic tutorial on how to use these ideas to analyse a broad range of graph coloring problems. As an application, also show that every graph with maximum degree Delta has a star coloring with 2 sqrt(2) Delta^{3/2} + Delta colors.

Constructing graphs with no immersion of large complete graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
In 1989, Lescure and Meyniel proved, for $d=5, 6$, that every $d$-chromatic graph contains an immersion of $K_d$, and in 2003 Abu-Khzam and Langston conjectured that this holds for all $d$. In 2010, DeVos, Kawarabayashi, Mohar, and Okamura proved this conjecture for $d = 7$. In each proof, the $d$-chromatic assumption was not fully utilized, as the proofs only use the fact that a $d$-critical graph has minimum degree at least $d - 1$. DeVos, Dvořák, Fox, McDonald, Mohar, and Scheide show the stronger conjecture that a graph with minimum degree $d-1$ has an immersion of $K_d$ fails for $d=10$ and $d\geq 12$ with a finite number of examples for each value of $d$, and small chromatic number relative to $d$, but it is shown that a minimum degree of $200d$ does guarantee an immersion of $K_d$. In this paper we show that the stronger conjecture is false for $d=8,9,11$ and give infinite families of examples with minimum degree $d-1$ and chromatic number $d-3$ or $d-2$ that do not contain an immersion of $K_d$. Our examples can be up to $(d-2)$-edge-connected. We show, using Hajós' Construction, that there is an infinite class of non-$(d-1)$-colorable graphs that contain an immersion of $K_d$. We conclude with some open questions, and the conjecture that a graph $G$ with minimum degree $d - 1$ and more than $\frac{|V(G)|}{1+m(d+1)}$ vertices of degree at least $md$ has an immersion of $K_d$.

A method to determine algebraically integral Cayley digraphs on finite Abelian group
Published in Contributions to Discrete Mathematics,Vol. 15 No. 2 (2020) • View Publication • BIB
Researchers in the past have studied eigenvalues of Cayley digraphs or graphs. We are interested in characterizing Cayley digraphs on a finite Abelian group G whose eigenvalues are algebraic integers in a given number field K. And we succeed in finding a method to do so by proving Theorem 1. Also, the number of such Cayley digraphs is computed.

Number of walks and degree powers in a graph
Published in Discrete Math. 309 (2009), 2613-2614 • View Publication • BIB
This note deals with the relationship between the total number of $k$-walks in a graph, and the sum of the $k$-th powers of its vertex degrees. In particular, it is shown that the the number of all $k$-walks is upper bounded by the sum of the $k$-th powers of the degrees.

Mantel's Theorem for random graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a graph $G$, denote by $t(G)$ (resp. $b(G)$) the maximum size of a triangle-free (resp. bipartite) subgraph of $G$. Of course $t(G) \geq b(G)$ for any $G$, and a classic result of Mantel from 1907 (the first case of Turán's Theorem) says that equality holds for complete graphs. A natural question, first considered by Babai, Simonovits and Spencer about 20 years ago is, when (i.e. for what $p=p(n)$) is the "Erdős-Rényi" random graph $G=G(n,p)$ likely to satisfy $t(G) = b(G)$? We show that this is true if $p>C n^{-1/2} \log^{1/2}n $ for a suitable constant $C$, which is best possible up to the value of $C$.

Simultaneous Embeddings with Vertices Mapping to Pre-Specified Points
Published • View Publication • BIB
We discuss the problem of embedding graphs in the plane with restrictions on the vertex mapping. In particular, we introduce a technique for drawing planar graphs with a fixed vertex mapping that bounds the number of times edges bend. An immediate consequence of this technique is that any planar graph can be drawn with a fixed vertex mapping so that edges map to piecewise linear curves with at most $3n + O(1)$ bends each. By considering uniformly random planar graphs, we show that $2n + O(1)$ bends per edge is sufficient on average. To further utilize our technique, we consider simultaneous embeddings of $k$ uniformly random planar graphs with vertices mapping to a fixed, common point set. We explain how to achieve such a drawing so that edges map to piecewise linear curves with $O(n^{1-1/k})$ bends each, which holds with overwhelming probability. This result improves upon the previously best known result of O(n) bends per edge for the case where $k \geq 2$. Moreover, we give a lower bound on the number of bends that matches our upper bound, proving our results are optimal.

Enumerations of finite topologies associated with a finite graph

The number of topologies and non-homeomorphic topologies on a fixed finite set are now known up to $n=18$, $n=16$ but still no complete formula yet (Sloane). There are one to one correspondence among topologies, preorder and digraphs. In this article, we enumerate topologies and non-homeomorphic topologies whose underlying graph is a given finite graph.

Recurrence of planar graph limits
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that any distributional limit of finite planar graphs in which the degree of the root has an exponential tail is almost surely recurrent. As a corollary, we obtain that the uniform infinite planar triangulation and quadrangulation (UIPT and UIPQ) are almost surely recurrent, resolving a conjecture of Angel, Benjamini and Schramm. We also settle another related problem of Benjamini and Schramm. We show that in any bounded degree, finite planar graph the probability that the simple random walk started at a uniform random vertex avoids its initial location for T steps is at most C/log T.

Eigenvalue interlacing and weight parameters of graphs
Published in Linear Algebra Appl. 290 (1999), no. 1-3, 275-301 • View Publication • BIB
Eigenvalue interlacing is a versatile technique for deriving results in algebraic combinatorics. In particular, it has been successfully used for proving a number of results about the relation between the (adjacency matrix or Laplacian) spectrum of a graph and some of its properties. For instance, some characterizations of regular partitions, and bounds for some parameters, such as the independence and chromatic numbers, the diameter, the bandwidth, etc., have been obtained. For each parameter of a graph involving the cardinality of some vertex sets, we can define its corresponding weight parameter by giving some "weights" (that is, the entries of the positive eigenvector) to the vertices and replacing cardinalities by square norms. The key point is that such weights "regularize" the graph, and hence allow us to define a kind of regular partition, called "pseudo-regular," intended for general graphs. Here we show how to use interlacing for proving results about some weight parameters and pseudo-regular partitions of a graph. For instance, generalizing a well-known result of Lovász, it is shown that the weight Shannon capacity $Θ^*$ of a connected graph $\G$, with $n$ vertices and (adjacency matrix) eigenvalues $λ_1>λ_2\ge\...\ge λ_n$, satisfies $$ Θ\le Θ^* \le \frac{\|\vecnu\|^2}{1-\frac{λ_1}{λ_n}} $$ where $Θ$ is the (standard) Shannon capacity and $\vecnu$ is the positive eigenvector normalized to have smallest entry 1. In the special case of regular graphs, the results obtained have some interesting corollaries, such as an upper bound for some of the multiplicities of the eigenvalues of a distance-regular graph. Finally, some results involving the Laplacian spectrum are derived. spectrum are derived.

The characteristic imset polytope of Bayesian networks with ordered nodes
Published • View Publication • BIB
In 2010, M. Studený, R. Hemmecke, and S. Linder explored a new algebraic description of graphical models, called characteristic imsets. Compare with standard imsets, characteristic imsets have several advantages: they are still unique vector representative of conditional independence structures, they are 0-1 vectors, and they are more intuitive in terms of graphs than standard imsets. After defining a characteristic imset polytope (cim-polytope) as the convex hull of all characteristic imsets with a given set of nodes, they also showed that a model selection in graphical models, which maximizes a quality criterion, can be converted into a linear programming problem over the cim-polytope. However, in general, for a fixed set of nodes, the cim-polytope can have exponentially many vertices over an exponentially high dimension. Therefore, in this paper, we focus on the family of directed acyclic graphs (DAGs) whose nodes have a fixed order. This family includes diagnosis models which can be described by Bipartite graphs with a set of $m$ nodes and a set of $n$ nodes for any $m, n \in \Z_+$. In this paper, we first consider cim-polytopes for all diagnosis models and show that these polytopes are direct products of simplices. Then we give a combinatorial description of all edges and all facets of these polytopes. Finally, we generalize these results to the cim-polytopes for all Bayesian networks with a fixed underlying ordering of nodes with or without fixed (or forbidden) edges.

Pretty good state transfer on double stars
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let A be the adjacency matrix of a graph $X$ and suppose U(t)=exp(itA). We view A as acting on $\cx^{V(X)}$ and take the standard basis of this space to be the vectors $e_u$ for $u$ in $V(X)$. Physicists say that we have perfect state transfer from vertex $u$ to $v$ at time $τ$ if there is a scalar $γ$ such that $U(τ)e_u = γe_v$. (Since $U(t)$ is unitary, $\normγ=1$.) For example, if $X$ is the $d$-cube and $u$ and $v$ are at distance $d$ then we have perfect state transfer from $u$ to $v$ at time $π/2$. Despite the existence of this nice family, it has become clear that perfect state transfer is rare. Hence we consider a relaxation: we say that we have pretty good state transfer from $u$ to $v$ if there is a complex number $γ$ and, for each positive real $ε$ there is a time $t$ such that $\norm{U(t)e_u - γe_v} < ε$. Again we necessarily have $|γ|=1$. Godsil, Kirkland, Severini and Smith showed that we have have pretty good state transfer between the end vertices of the path $P_n$ if and only $n+1$ is a power of two, a prime, or twice a prime. (There is perfect state transfer between the end vertices only for $P_2$ and $P_3$.) It is something of a surprise that the occurrence of pretty good state transfer is characterized by a number-theoretic condition. In this paper we study double-star graphs, which are trees with two vertices of degree $k+1$ and all other vertices with degree one. We prove that there is never perfect state transfer between the two vertices of degree $k+1$, and that there is pretty good state transfer between them if and only if $4k+1$ is a perfect square.
Bounds on Contention Management in Radio Networks

The local broadcast problem assumes that processes in a wireless network are provided messages, one by one, that must be delivered to their neighbors. In this paper, we prove tight bounds for this problem in two well-studied wireless network models: the classical model, in which links are reliable and collisions consistent, and the more recent dual graph model, which introduces unreliable edges. Our results prove that the Decay strategy, commonly used for local broadcast in the classical setting, is optimal. They also establish a separation between the two models, proving that the dual graph setting is strictly harder than the classical setting, with respect to this primitive.

A new upper bound on the acyclic chromatic indices of planar graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
An acyclic edge coloring of a graph $G$ is a proper edge coloring such that no bichromatic cycles are produced. The acyclic chromatic index $a'(G)$ of $G$ is the smallest integer $k$ such that $G$ has an acyclic edge coloring using $k$ colors. It was conjectured that $a'(G)\le Δ+2$ for any simple graph $G$ with maximum degree $Δ$. In this paper, we prove that if $G$ is a planar graph, then $a'(G)\leqΔ+7$. This improves a result by Basavaraju et al. [{\em Acyclic edge-coloring of planar graphs}, SIAM J. Discrete Math., 25 (2011), pp. 463-478], which says that every planar graph $G$ satisfies $a'(G)\leqΔ+12$.

Samplings and observables. Invariants of metric measure spaces
In the paper we are dealing with metric measure spaces of diameter at most one and of total measure one. Gromov introduced the sampling compactification of the set of these spaces. He asked whether the metric measure space invariants extend to the compactification. Using ideas of the newly developed theory of graph limits we identify the elements of the compactification with certain geometric objects and show how to extend various invariants to this space. We will introduce the notion of ultralimit of metric measure spaces, that will be the main technical tool of our paper.

On distance-regular Cayley graphs on abelian groups
Let $G$ denote a finite abelian group with identity 1 and let $S$ denote an inverse-closed subset of $G \setminus {1}$, which generates $G$ and for which there exists $s \in S$, such that $\la S \setminus \{s,s^{-1}\} \ra \ne G$. In this paper we obtain the complete classification of distance-regular Cayley graphs $\cay(G;S)$ for such pairs of $G$ and $S$.
