We show that under certain conditions the square of the graph obtained by identifying a vertex in two graphs with hamiltonian square is also hamiltonian. Using this result, we prove necessary and sufficient conditions for hamiltonicity of the square of a connected graph such that every vertex of degree at least three in a block graph corresponds to a cut vertex and any two these vertices are at distance at least four.

The trees, respectively unicyclic graphs, on $n$ vertices with the smallest Laplacian permanent are studied. In this paper, by edge-grafting transformations, the $n$-vertex trees of given bipartition having the second and third smallest Laplacian permanent are identified. Similarly, the $n$-vertex bipartite unicyclic graphs of given bipartition having the first, second and third smallest Laplacian permanent are characterized. Consequently, the $n$-vertex bipartite unicyclic graphs with the first, second and third smallest Laplacian permanent are determined.

It is shown that distance powers of an integral Cayley graph over an abelian group are again integral Cayley graphs over that group. Moreover, it is proved that distance matrices of integral Cayley graphs over abelian groups have integral spectrum.
An example of graph limits of growing sequences of random graphs

We consider a class of growing random graphs obtained by creating vertices sequentially one by one: at each step, we choose uniformly the neighbours of the newly created vertex; its degree is a random variable with a fixed but arbitrary distribution, depending on the number of existing vertices. Examples from this class turn out to be the ER random graph, a natural random threshold graph, etc. By working with the notion of graph limits, we define a kernel which, under certain conditions, is the limit of the growing random graph. Moreover, for a subclass of models, the growing graph on any given n vertices has the same distribution as the random graph with n vertices that the kernel defines. The motivation stems from a model of graph growth whose attachment mechanism does not require information about properties of the graph at each iteration.

The Canada Day Theorem is an identity involving sums of $k \times k$ minors of an arbitrary $n \times n$ symmetric matrix. It was discovered as a by-product of the work on so-called peakon solutions of an integrable nonlinear partial differential equation proposed by V. Novikov. Here we present another proof of this theorem, which explains the underlying mechanism in terms of the orbits of a certain abelian group action on the set of all $k$-edge matchings of the complete bipartite graph $K_{n,n}$.
On Epsilon-Nets, Distance Oracles, and Metric Embeddings
We give two new applications of an observation from \cite{ADFGW11}. The first is an almost linear sized constant time data structure for reporting very large distances in undirected graphs. The second is a generic transformation of results about $\ell_1$-embeddability of metrics to a setting, where we are interested in preservation of large distances only.

We study geometric and combinatorial properties of the degenerate flag varieties of type A. These varieties are acted upon by the automorphism group of a certain representation of a type A quiver, containing a maximal torus T. Using the group action, we describe the moment graphs, encoding the zero- and one-dimensional T-orbits. We also study the smooth and singular loci of the degenerate flag varieties. We show that the Euler characteristic of the smooth locus is equal to the large Schröder number and the Poincaré polynomial is given by a natural statistics counting the number of diagonal steps in a Schröder path. As an application we obtain a new combinatorial description of the large and small Schröder numbers and their q-analogues.

A rotor-router walk is a deterministic version of a random walk, in which the walker is routed to each of the neighbouring vertices in some fixed cyclic order. We consider here directed covers of graphs (called also periodic trees) and we study several quantities related to rotor-router walks on directed covers. The quantities under consideration are: order of the rotor-router group, order of the root element in the rotor-router group and the connection with random walks.
Total coloring of 1-toroidal graphs of maximum degree at least 11 and no adjacent triangles

A {\em total coloring} of a graph $G$ is an assignment of colors to the vertices and the edges of $G$ such that every pair of adjacent/incident elements receive distinct colors. The {\em total chromatic number} of a graph $G$, denoted by $\chiup''(G)$, is the minimum number of colors in a total coloring of $G$. The well-known Total Coloring Conjecture (TCC) says that every graph with maximum degree $Δ$ admits a total coloring with at most $Δ+ 2$ colors. A graph is {\em $1$-toroidal} if it can be drawn in torus such that every edge crosses at most one other edge. In this paper, we investigate the total coloring of $1$-toroidal graphs, and prove that the TCC holds for the $1$-toroidal graphs with maximum degree at least~$11$ and some restrictions on the triangles. Consequently, if $G$ is a $1$-toroidal graph with maximum degree $Δ$ at least~$11$ and without adjacent triangles, then $G$ admits a total coloring with at most $Δ+ 2$ colors.

The Fiedler value $λ_2$, also known as algebraic connectivity, is the second smallest Laplacian eigenvalue of a graph. We study the maximum Fiedler value among all planar graphs $G$ with $n$ vertices, denoted by $λ_{2\max}$, and we show the bounds $2+Θ(\frac{1}{n^2}) \leq λ_{2\max} \leq 2+O(\frac{1}{n})$. We also provide bounds on the maximum Fiedler value for the following classes of planar graphs: Bipartite planar graphs, bipartite planar graphs with minimum vertex degree~3, and outerplanar graphs. Furthermore, we derive almost tight bounds on $λ_{2\max}$ for two more classes of graphs, those of bounded genus and $K_h$-minor-free graphs.

Let $G$ be a graph embedded on a surface $S_\varepsilon$ with Euler genus $\varepsilon > 0$, and let $P\subseteq V(G)$ be a set of vertices mutually at distance at least 4 apart. Suppose all vertices of $G$ have $H(\varepsilon)$-lists and the vertices of $P$ are precolored, where $H(\varepsilon)=\Big\lfloor\frac{7 + \sqrt{24\varepsilon + 1}}{2}\Big\rfloor$ is the Heawood number. We show that the coloring of $P$ extends to a list-coloring of $G$ and that the distance bound of 4 is best possible. Our result provides an answer to an analogous question of Albertson about extending a precoloring of a set of mutually distant vertices in a planar graph to a 5-list-coloring of the graph and generalizes a result of Albertson and Hutchinson to list-coloring extensions on surfaces.

For a poset P, a subposet A, and an order preserving map F from A into the real numbers, the marked order polytope parametrizes the order preserving extensions of F to P. We show that the function counting integral-valued extensions is a piecewise polynomial in F and we prove a reciprocity statement in terms of order-reversing maps. We apply our results to give a geometric proof of a combinatorial reciprocity for monotone triangles due to Fischer and Riegler (2011) and we consider the enumerative problem of counting extensions of partial graph colorings of Herzberg and Murty (2007).
On Bounding the Diameter of the Commuting Graph of a Group

The commuting graph of a group $G$ is the simple undirected graph whose vertices are the non-central elements of $G$ and two distinct vertices are adjacent if and only if they commute. It is conjectured by Jafarzadeh and Iranmanesh that there is a universal upper bound on the diameter of the commuting graphs of finite groups when the commuting graph is connected. In this paper we determine upper bounds on the diameter of the commuting graph for some classes of groups to rule them out as possible counterexamples to this conjecture. We also give an example of an infinite family of groups with trivial centre and diameter 6, the previously largest known diameter for an infinite family was 5 for $S_n$.

The minimum skew rank $mr^{-}(\mathbb{F},G)$ of a graph $G$ over a field $\mathbb{F}$ is the smallest possible rank among all skew symmetric matrices over $\mathbb{F}$, whose ($i$,$j$)-entry (for $i\neq j$) is nonzero whenever $ij$ is an edge in $G$ and is zero otherwise. We give some new properties of the minimum skew rank of a graph, including a characterization of the graphs $G$ with cut vertices over the infinite field $\mathbb{F}$ such that $mr^{-}(\mathbb{F},G)=4$, determination of the minimum skew rank of $k$-paths over a field $\mathbb{F}$, and an extending of an existing result to show that $mr^{-}(\mathbb{F},G)=2match(G)=MR^{-}(\mathbb{F},G)$ for a connected graph $G$ with no even cycles and a field $\mathbb{F}$, where $match(G)$ is the matching number of $G$, and $MR^{-}(\mathbb{F},G)$ is the largest possible rank among all skew symmetric matrices over $\mathbb{F}$.
Stirling numbers of forests and cycles

For a graph $G$ and a positive integer $k$, the {\em graphical Stirling number} $S(G,k)$ is the number of partitions of the vertex set of $G$ into $k$ non-empty independent sets. Equivalently it is the number of proper colorings of $G$ that use exactly $k$ colors, with two colorings identified if they differ only on the names of the colors. If $G$ is the empty graph on $n$ vertices then $S(G,k)$ reduces to $S(n,k)$, the familiar Stirling number of the second kind.
In this note we first consider Stirling numbers of forests. We show that if $(F^{c(n)}_n)_{n\geq 0}$ is any sequence of forests with $F^{c(n)}_n$ having $n$ vertices and $c(n)=o(\sqrt{n/\log n})$ components, and if $X^{c(n)}_n$ is a random variable that takes value $k$ with probability proportional to $S(F^{c(n)}_n,k)$ (that is, $X^{c(n)}_n$ is the number of classes in a uniformly chosen partition of $F^{c(n)}_n$ into non-empty independent sets), then $X^{c(n)}_n$ is asymptotically normal, meaning that suitably normalized it tends in distribution to the standard normal. This generalizes a seminal result of Harper on the ordinary Stirling numbers. Along the way we give recurrences for calculating the generating functions of the sequences $(S(F^c_n,k))_{k \geq 0}$, show that these functions have all real zeroes, and exhibit three different interlacing patterns between the zeroes of pairs of consecutive generating functions.
We next consider Stirling numbers of cycles. We establish asymptotic normality for the number of classes in a uniformly chosen partition of $C_n$ (the cycle on $n$ vertices) into non-empty independent sets. We give a recurrence for calculating the generating function of the sequence $(S(C_n,k))_{k \geq 0}$, and use this to give a direct proof of a log-concavity result that had previously only been arrived at in a very indirect way.
Identifying codes of the direct product of two cliques

An identifying code in a graph is a dominating set that also has the property that the closed neighborhood of each vertex in the graph has a distinct intersection with the set. It was recently shown by Gravier, Moncel and Semri that the minimum cardinality of an identifying code for the Cartesian product of two cliques of the same order n is the floor of 3n/2. We consider identifying codes of the direct product of two cliques. In particular, we answer a question of Klavzar and determine the minimum cardinality of an identifying code for the direct product of any two cliques.
Maximal antichains of minimum size

Let $n\geqslant 4$ be a natural number, and let $K$ be a set $K\subseteq [n]:={1,2,...,n}$. We study the problem to find the smallest possible size of a maximal family $\mathcal{A}$ of subsets of $[n]$ such that $\mathcal{A}$ contains only sets whose size is in $K$, and $A\not\subseteq B$ for all ${A,B}\subseteq\mathcal{A}$, i.e. $\mathcal{A}$ is an antichain. We present a general construction of such antichains for sets $K$ containing 2, but not 1. If $3\in K$ our construction asymptotically yields the smallest possible size of such a family, up to an $o(n^2)$ error. We conjecture our construction to be asymptotically optimal also for $3\not\in K$, and we prove a weaker bound for the case $K={2,4}$. Our asymptotic results are straightforward applications of the graph removal lemma to an equivalent reformulation of the problem in extremal graph theory which is interesting in its own right.
On homomorphisms from the Hamming cube to {\bf Z}
Write ${\cal F}$ for the set of homomorphisms from $\{0,1\}^d$ to ${\bf Z}$ which send $\underline{0}$ to 0 (think of members of ${\cal F}$ as labellings of $\{0,1\}^d$ in which adjacent strings get labels differing by exactly 1), and ${\cal F}_i$ for those which take on exactly $i$ values. We give asymptotic formulae for $|{\cal F}|$ and $|{\cal F}_i|$.
In particular, we show that the probability that a uniformly chosen member ${\bf f}$ of ${\cal F}$ takes more than five values tends to 0 as $d \rightarrow \infty$. This settles a conjecture of J. Kahn. Previously, Kahn had shown that there is a constant $b$ such that ${\bf f}$ a.s. takes at most $b$ values. This in turn verified a conjecture of I. Benjamini {\em et al.}, that for each $t > 0$, ${\bf f}$ a.s. takes at most $td$ values.
Determining $|{\cal F}|$ is equivalent both to counting the number of rank functions on the Boolean lattice $2^{[d]}$ (functions $f \colon 2^{[d]} \longrightarrow {\bf N}$ satisfying $f(\emptyset)=0$ and $f(A) \leq f(A \cup x) \leq f(A)+1$ for all $A \in 2^{[d]}$ and $x \in [d]$) and to counting the number of proper 3-colourings of the discrete cube (i.e., the number of homomorphisms from $\{0,1\}^d$ to $K_3$, the complete graph on 3 vertices).
Our proof uses the main lemma from Kahn's proof of constant range, together with some combinatorial approximation techniques introduced by A. Sapozhenko.
On weighted graph homomorphisms
For given graphs $G$ and $H$, let $|Hom(G,H)|$ denote the set of graph homomorphisms from $G$ to $H$. We show that for any finite, $n$-regular, bipartite graph $G$ and any finite graph $H$ (perhaps with loops), $|Hom(G,H)|$ is maximum when $G$ is a disjoint union of $K_{n,n}$'s. This generalizes a result of J. Kahn on the number of independent sets in a regular bipartite graph. We also give the asymptotics of the logarithm of $|Hom(G,H)|$ in terms of a simply expressed parameter of $H$.
We also consider weighted versions of these results which may be viewed as statements about the partition functions of certain models of physical systems with hard constraints.
Slow mixing of Glauber Dynamics for the hard-core model on regular bipartite graphs
Let $\gS=(V,E)$ be a finite, $d$-regular bipartite graph. For any $λ>0$ let $π_λ$ be the probability measure on the independent sets of $\gS$ in which the set $I$ is chosen with probability proportional to $λ^{|I|}$ ($π_λ$ is the {\em hard-core measure with activity $λ$ on $\gS$}). We study the Glauber dynamics, or single-site update Markov chain, whose stationary distribution is $π_λ$. We show that when $λ$ is large enough (as a function of $d$ and the expansion of subsets of single-parity of $V$) then the convergence to stationarity is exponentially slow in $|V(\gS)|$. In particular, if $\gS$ is the $d$-dimensional hypercube $\{0,1\}^d$ we show that for values of $λ$ tending to 0 as $d$ grows, the convergence to stationarity is exponentially slow in the volume of the cube. The proof combines a conductance argument with combinatorial enumeration methods.
