We consider generalizations of Schuetzenberger's promotion operator on the set L of linear extensions of a finite poset of size n. This gives rise to a strongly connected graph on L. By assigning weights to the edges of the graph in two different ways, we study two Markov chains, both of which are irreducible. The stationary state of one gives rise to the uniform distribution, whereas the weights of the stationary state of the other has a nice product formula. This generalizes results by Hendricks on the Tsetlin library, which corresponds to the case when the poset is the anti-chain and hence L=S_n is the full symmetric group. We also provide explicit eigenvalues of the transition matrix in general when the poset is a rooted forest. This is shown by proving that the associated monoid is R-trivial and then using Steinberg's extension of Brown's theory for Markov chains on left regular bands to R-trivial monoids.

Let $G$ be a finite graph with minimum degree $r$. Form a random subgraph $G_p$ of $G$ by taking each edge of $G$ into $G_p$ independently and with probability $p$. We prove that for any constant $ε>0$, if $p=\frac{1+ε}{r}$, then $G_p$ is non-planar with probability approaching 1 as $r$ grows. This generalizes classical results on planarity of binomial random graphs.

We consider a random graph G(n,p) whose vertex set V has been randomly embedded in the unit square and whose edges are given weight equal to the geometric distance between their end vertices. Then each pair {u,v} of vertices have a distance in the weighted graph, and a Euclidean distance. The stretch factor of the embedded graph is defined as the maximum ratio of these two distances, over all u,v in V. We give upper and lower bounds on the stretch factor (holding asymptotically almost surely), and show that for p not too close to 0 or 1, these bounds are best possible in a certain sense. Our results imply that the stretch factor is bounded with probability tending to 1 if and only if n(1-p) tends to 0, answering a question of O'Rourke.

We obtain an optimal deviation from the mean upper bound \begin{equation} D(x)\=\sup_{f\in \F}μ\{f-\E_μ f\geq x\},\qquad\ \text{for}\ x\in\R\label{abstr} \end{equation} where $\F$ is the class of the integrable, Lipschitz functions on probability metric (product) spaces. As corollaries we get exact solutions of $\eqref{abstr}$ for Euclidean unit sphere $S^{n-1}$ with a geodesic distance and a normalized Haar measure, for $\R^n$ equipped with a Gaussian measure and for the multidimensional cube, rectangle, torus or Diamond graph equipped with uniform measure and Hamming distance. We also prove that in general probability metric spaces the $\sup$ in $\eqref{abstr}$ is achieved on a family of distance functions.
Positive graphs

We study "positive" graphs that have a nonnegative homomorphism number into every edge-weighted graph (where the edgeweights may be negative). We conjecture that all positive graphs can be obtained by taking two copies of an arbitrary simple graph and gluing them together along an independent set of nodes. We prove the conjecture for various classes of graphs including all trees. We prove a number of properties of positive graphs, including the fact that they have a homomorphic image which has at least half the original number of nodes but in which every edge has an even number of pre-images. The results, combined with a computer program, imply that the conjecture is true for all graphs up to 9 nodes.
The Edge-Isoperimetric Problem in $(\mathbb{N}^2,\infty)$
We consider the edge-isoperimetric problem on the graph of the infinite grid $\mathbb{N}^{2}$ in the $\ell_{\infty}$ metric. We first show that the solutions are not nested, so that techniques other than compressions have to be used. We then show that for any given volume of sets in $\mathbb{N}^{2}$, there exists an optimal set of a specific geometric form and describe this form. We continue on to prove that the optimal perimeter has asymptotic growth rate $2\sqrt{7x}$ as a function of the volume and obtain upper and lower bounds for the optimal perimeter which are within the small additive constant of $\frac{35}{2}$ of one another, thus effectively solving the discrete isoperimetric inequality on this graph. Finally, we prove that there exist arbitrarily long consecutive values of the volume for which the minimum perimeter is the same.
Sink-Stable Sets of Digraphs
We introduce the notion of sink-stable sets of a digraph and prove a min-max formula for the maximum cardinality of the union of k sink-stable sets. The results imply a recent min-max theorem of Abeledo and Atkinson on the Clar number of bipartite plane graphs and a sharpening of Minty's coloring theorem. We also exhibit a link to min-max results of Bessy and Thomasse and of Sebo on cyclic stable sets.

Let $R$ be a finite commutative ring. The unitary Cayley graph of $R$, denoted $G_R$, is the graph with vertex set $R$ and edge set ${{a,b}:a,b\in R, a-b\in R^\times}$, where $R^\times$ is the set of units of $R$. An $r$-regular graph is Ramanujan if the absolute value of every eigenvalue of it other than $\pm r$ is at most $2\sqrt{r-1}$. In this paper we give a necessary and sufficient condition for $G_R$ to be Ramanujan, and a necessary and sufficient condition for the complement of $G_R$ to be Ramanujan. We also determine the energy of the line graph of $G_R$, and compute the spectral moments of $G_R$ and its line graph.

A propeller graph is obtained from an $\infty$-graph by attaching a path to the vertex of degree four, where an $\infty$-graph consists of two cycles with precisely one common vertex. In this paper, we prove that all propeller graphs are determined by their Laplacian spectra as well as their signless Laplacian spectra.
On some approaches to the spectral excess theorem for nonregular graphs

The Spectral Excess Theorem (SPET) for distance-regular graphs states that a regular (connected) graph is distance-regular if and only if its spectral-excess equals its average excess. Recently, some local or global approaches to the SPET have been used to obtain new versions of the theorem for nonregular graphs, and also to study the problem of characterizing the graphs which have the corresponding distance-regularity property. In this paper, some of these versions are related and compared, and some of their results are improved. As a result, a sufficient condition for a graph to be distance-polynomial is obtained.

A Frobenius group is a transitive but not regular permutation group such that only the identity element can fix two points. A finite Frobenius group can be expressed as $G = K \rtimes H$ with $K$ a nilpotent normal subgroup. A first-kind $G$-Frobenius graph is a Cayley graph on $K$ with connection set $S$ an $H$-orbit on $K$ generating $K$, where $H$ is of even order or $S$ consists of involutions. We classify all 6-valent first-kind Frobenius circulant graphs such that the underlying kernel $K$ is cyclic. We give optimal gossiping and routing algorithms for such a circulant and compute its forwarding indices, Wiener indices and minimum gossip time. We also prove that its broadcasting time is equal to its diameter plus two or three. We prove that all 6-valent first-kind Frobenius circulants with cyclic kernels are Eisenstein-Jacobi graphs, the latter being Cayley graphs on quotient rings of the ring of Eisenstein-Jacobi integers. We also prove that larger Eisenstein-Jacobi graphs can be constructed from smaller ones as topological covers, and a similar result holds for 6-valent first-kind Frobenius circulants. As a corollary any Eisenstein-Jacobi graph with order congruent to 1 modulo 6 and underlying Eisenstein-Jacobi integer not an associate of a real integer, is a cover of a 6-valent first-kind Frobenius circulant. A distributed real-time computing architecture known as HARTS or hexagonal mesh is a special 6-valent first-kind Frobenius circulant.
Algebraic characterizations of regularity properties in bipartite graphs

Regular and distance-regular characterizations of general graphs are well-known. In particular, the spectral excess theorem states that a connected graph G is distance-regular if and only if its spectral excess (a number that can be computed from the spectrum) equals the average excess (the mean of the numbers of vertices at extremal distance from every vertex). The aim of this paper is to derive new characterizations of regularity and distance-regularity for the more restricted family of bipartite graphs. In this case, some characterizations of (bi)regular bipartite graphs are given in terms of the mean degrees in every partite set and the Hoffman polynomial. Moreover, it is shown that the conditions for having distance-regularity in such graphs can be relaxed when compared with general graphs. Finally, a new version of the spectral excess theorem for bipartite graphs is presented.

We call a (simple) graph G codismantlable if either it has no edges or else it has a codominated vertex x, meaning that the closed neighborhood of x contains that of one of its neighbor, such that G-x codismantlable. We prove that if G is well-covered and it lacks induced cycles of length four, five and seven, than the vertex decomposability, codismantlability and Cohen-Macaulayness for G are all equivalent. The rest deals with the computation of Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of codismantlable graphs. Note that our approach complements and unifies many of the earlier results on bipartite, chordal and very well-covered graphs.
Pseudo-distance-regularised graphs are distance-regular or distance-biregular

The concept of pseudo-distance-regularity around a vertex of a graph is a natural generalization, for non-regular graphs, of the standard distance-regularity around a vertex. In this note, we prove that a pseudo-distance-regular graph around each of its vertices is either distance-regular or distance-biregular. By using a combinatorial approach, the same conclusion was reached by Godsil and Shawe-Taylor for a distance-regular graph around each of its vertices. Thus, our proof, which is of an algebraic nature, can also be seen as an alternative demonstration of Godsil and Shawe-Taylor's theorem.

We study the following problem: given a real number k and integer d, what is the smallest epsilon such that any fractional (k+epsilon)-precoloring of vertices at pairwise distances at least d of a fractionally k-colorable graph can be extended to a fractional (k+epsilon)-coloring of the whole graph? The exact values of epsilon were known for k=2 and k\ge3 and any d. We determine the exact values of epsilon for k \in (2,3) if d=4, and k \in [2.5,3) if d=6, and give upper bounds for k \in (2,3) if d=5,7, and k \in (2,2.5) if d=6. Surprisingly, epsilon viewed as a function of k is discontinuous for all those values of d.
The Tutte Polynomial of a Morphism of Matroids 6. A Multi-Faceted Counting Formula for Hyperplane Regions and Acyclic Orientations
We show that the 4-variable generating function of certain orientation related parameters of an ordered oriented matroid is the evaluation at (x + u, y+v) of its Tutte polynomial. This evaluation contains as special cases the counting of regions in hyperplane arrangements and of acyclic orientations in graphs. Several new 2-variable expansions of the Tutte polynomial of an oriented matroid follow as corollaries.
This result hold more generally for oriented matroid perspectives, with specific special cases the counting of bounded regions in hyperplane arrangements or of bipolar acyclic orientations in graphs.
In corollary, we obtain expressions for the partial derivatives of the Tutte polynomial as generating functions of the same orientation parameters.

A conjecture of Erdős, Gyárfás, and Pyber says that in any edge-colouring of a complete graph with r colours, it is possible to cover all the vertices with r vertex-disjoint monochromatic cycles. So far, this conjecture has been proven only for r = 2. In this paper we show that in fact this conjecture is false for all r > 2. In contrast to this, we show that in any edge-colouring of a complete graph with three colours, it is possible to cover all the vertices with three vertex-disjoint monochromatic paths, proving a particular case of a conjecture due to Gyárfás. As an intermediate result we show that in any edge-colouring of the complete graph with the colours red and blue, it is possible to cover all the vertices with a red path, and a disjoint blue balanced complete bipartite graph.

Let $S$ be a set of transpositions that generates the symmetric group $S_n$, where $n \ge 3$. The transposition graph $T(S)$ is defined to be the graph with vertex set $\{1,\ldots,n\}$ and with vertices $i$ and $j$ being adjacent in $T(S)$ whenever $(i,j) \in S$. We prove that if the girth of the transposition graph $T(S)$ is at least 5, then the automorphism group of the Cayley graph $\Cay(S_n,S)$ is the semidirect product $R(S_n) \rtimes \Aut(S_n,S)$, where $\Aut(S_n,S)$ is the set of automorphisms of $S_n$ that fixes $S$. This strengthens a result of Feng on transposition graphs that are trees. We also prove that if the transposition graph $T(S)$ is a 4-cycle, then the set of automorphisms of the Cayley graph $\Cay(S_4,S)$ that fixes a vertex and each of its neighbors is isomorphic to the Klein 4-group and hence is nontrivial. We thus identify the existence of 4-cycles in the transposition graph as being an important factor in causing a potentially larger automorphism group of the Cayley graph.
