Packing and covering a given directed graph in a directed graph
For every fixed $k \ge 4$, it is proved that if an $n$-vertex directed graph has at most $t$ pairwise arc-disjoint directed $k$-cycles, then there exists a set of at most $\frac{2}{3}kt+ o(n^2)$ arcs that meets all directed $k$-cycles and that the set of $k$-cycles admits a fractional cover of value at most $\frac{2}{3}kt$. It is also proved that the ratio $\frac{2}{3}k$ cannot be improved to a constant smaller than $\frac{k}{2}$. For $k=5$ the constant $2k/3$ is improved to $25/8$ and for $k=3$ it was recently shown by Cooper et al. that the constant can be taken to be $9/5$. The result implies a deterministic polynomial time $\frac{2}{3}k$-approximation algorithm for the directed $k$-cycle cover problem, improving upon a previous $(k{-}1)$-approximation algorithm of Kortsarz et al. More generally, for every directed graph $H$ we introduce a graph parameter $f(H)$ for which it is proved that if an $n$-vertex directed graph has at most $t$ pairwise arc-disjoint $H$-copies, then there exists a set of at most $f(H)t+ o(n^2)$ arcs that meets all $H$-copies and that the set of $H$-copies admits a fractional cover of value at most $f(H)t$. It is shown that for almost all $H$ it holds that $f(H) \approx |E(H)|/2$ and that for every $k$-vertex tournament $H$ it holds that $f(H) \le \lfloor k^2/4 \rfloor$.
A Note on the 2-Colored Rectilinear Crossing Number of Random Point Sets in the Unit Square
Let $S$ be a set of four points chosen independently, uniformly at random from a square. Join every pair of points of $S$ with a straight line segment. Color these edges red if they have positive slope and blue, otherwise. We show that the probability that $S$ defines a pair of crossing edges of the same color is equal to $1/4$. This is connected to a recent result of Aichholzer et al. [GD 2019] who showed that by 2-colouring the edges of a geometric graph and counting monochromatic crossings instead of crossings, the number of crossings can be more than halfed. Our result shows that for the described random drawings, there is a coloring of the edges such that the number of monochromatic crossings is in expectation $\frac{1}{2}-\frac{7}{50}$ of the total number of crossings.

Every $d(d+1)$-connected graph is globally rigid in $\mathbb{R}^d$
Using a probabilistic method, we prove that $d(d+1)$-connected graphs are rigid in $\mathbb{R}^d$, a conjecture of Lovász and Yemini. Then, using recent results on weakly globally linked pairs, we modify our argument to prove that $d(d+1)$-connected graphs are globally rigid, too, a conjecture of Connelly, Jordán and Whiteley. The constant $d(d+1)$ is best possible.

Classification of Minimal Separating Sets of Low Genus Surfaces
A minimal separating set in a connected topological space $X$ is a subset $L \subset X$ with the property that $X \setminus L$ is disconnected, but if $L^{\prime}$ is a proper subset of $L$, then $X \setminus L^{\prime}$ is connected. Such sets show up in a variety of contexts. For example, in a wide class of metric spaces, if we choose distinct points p and q, then the set of points x satisfying d(x, p) = d(x, q) is a minimal separating set. In this paper we classify which topological graphs can be realized as minimal separating sets in surfaces of low genus. In general the question of whether a graph can be embedded at all in a surface is a difficult one, so our work is partly computational. We classify graphs embeddings which are minimal separating in a given genus and write a computer program to find all such embeddings and their underlying graphs.

The minimum number of detours in graphs
A longest path in a graph is called a detour. It is easy to see that a connected graph of minimum degree at least $2$ and order at least $4$ has at least $4$ detours. We prove that if the number of detours in such a graph of order at least $9$ is odd, then it is at least $9,$ and this lower bound can be attained for every order. Thus the possibilities $3,$ $5$ and $7$ are excluded. Two open problems are posed.

The reachability homology of a directed graph
Published in International Mathematics Research Notices, 2025(3):1-18, 2025 • Search Publication
The last decade has seen the development of path homology and magnitude homology -- two homology theories of directed graphs, each satisfying classic properties such as Kunneth and Mayer-Vietoris theorems. Recent work of Asao has shown that magnitude homology and path homology are related, appearing in different pages of a certain spectral sequence. Here we study the target of that spectral sequence, which we call reachability homology. We prove that it satisfies appropriate homotopy invariance, Kunneth, excision, and Mayer-Vietoris theorems, these all being stronger than the corresponding properties for either magnitude or path homology.
Indivisibility for Classes of Graphs
We examine indivisibility for classes of graphs. We show that the class of hereditarily $α$-sparse graphs is indivisible if and only if $α> 2$. Additionally, we show that the following classes of graphs are indivisible: perfect graphs, cographs, and chordal graphs, and the following classes of graphs are not indivisible: threshold graphs, split graphs, and distance-hereditary graphs.

Quantum properties of $\mathcal F$-cographs
We initiate a systematic study of quantum properties of finite graphs, namely, quantum asymmetry, quantum symmetry, and quantum isomorphism. We define the Schmidt alternative for a class of graphs, which reveals to be a useful tool for studying quantum symmetries of graphs. After showing that quantum isomorphic graphs have quantum isomorphic centers and connected components, we solve the aforementioned problems for the classes of cographs and forests. We also compute their quantum automorphism groups for the first time. In doing so, we extend to the noncommutative setting a theorem of Jordan. Using general results on $\mathcal F$-cographs, we extend the precedent results to $\mathcal G_5$-cographs and tree-cographs, two distinct strictly proper superclasses of cographs and forests respectively. Finally, we show that quantum isomorphic planar graphs are isomorphic.

Combinatorics of $(m,n)$-Word Lattices
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 31, 4 (2024). P4.1 • View PublicationBIB
We study the $(m,n)$-word lattices recently introduced by V. Pilaud and D. Poliakova in their study of generalized Hochschild polytopes. We prove that these lattices are extremal and constructable by interval doublings. Moreover, we describe further combinatorial properties of these lattices, such as their cardinality, their canonical join representations and their Galois graphs.

Recoloring some hereditary graph classes
Published in Discrete Applied Mathematics 361, 2025 • View PublicationBIB
The reconfiguration graph of the $k$-colorings, denoted $R_k(G)$, is the graph whose vertices are the $k$-colorings of $G$ and two colorings are adjacent in $R_k(G)$ if they differ in color on exactly one vertex. A graph $G$ is said to be recolorable if $R_{\ell}(G)$ is connected for all $\ell\geq χ(G)$+1. In this paper, we study the recolorability of several graph classes restricted by forbidden induced subgraphs. We prove some properties of a vertex-minimal graph $G$ which is not recolorable. We show that every (triangle, $H$)-free graph is recolorable if and only if every (paw, $H$)-free graph is recolorable. Every graph in the class of $(2K_2,\ H)$-free graphs, where $H$ is a 4-vertex graph except $P_4$ or $P_3$+$P_1$, is recolorable if $H$ is either a triangle, paw, claw, or diamond. Furthermore, we prove that every ($P_5$, $C_5$, house, co-banner)-free graph is recolorable.

A structure theorem for pseudo-segments and its applications
We prove a far-reaching strengthening of Szemerédi's regularity lemma for intersection graphs of pseudo-segments. It shows that the vertex set of such a graph can be partitioned into a bounded number of parts of roughly the same size such that almost all bipartite graphs between different pairs of parts are complete or empty. We use this to get an improved bound on disjoint edges in simple topological graphs, showing that every $n$-vertex simple topological graph with no $k$ pairwise disjoint edges has at most $n(\log n)^{O(\log k)}$ edges.

The upper bound of the spectral radius for the hypergraphs without Berge-graphs
The spectral analogue of the Turán type problem for hypergraphs is to determine the maximum spectral radius for the hypergraphs of order $n$ that do not contain a given hypergraph. For the hypergraphs among the set of the connected linear $3$-uniform hypergraphs on $n$ vertices without the Berge-$C_l$, we present two upper bounds for their spectral radius and $α$-spectral radius, which are related to $n$,$l$ and $α$, where $C_l$ is a cycle of length $l$ with $l\geqslant 5$, $n\geqslant 3$ and $0 \leqslant α<1$. Let $B_s$ be an $s$-book with $s\geqslant2$ and $K_{s,t}$ be a complete bipartite graph with two parts of size $s$ and $t$, respectively, where $s,t \geqslant 1$. For the hypergraphs among the set of the connected linear $k$-uniform hypergraphs on $n$ vertices without the Berge-$\{B_s, K_{2,t}\}$, we derive two upper bounds for their spectral radius and $α$-spectral radius, which depend on $n$, $k$, $s$, and $α$, where $n$,$k\geqslant 3$,$s\geqslant 2$,$1\leqslant t\leqslant \frac{1}{2}(6k^2-15k+10)(s-1)+1$, and $0\leqslant α<1$.

On the automorphism group of a distance-regular graph
The motion of a graph is the minimal degree of its full automorphism group. Babai conjectured that the motion of a primitive distance-regular graph on $n$ vertices of diameter greater than two is at least $n/C$ for some universal constant $C > 0$, unless the graph is a Johnson or Hamming graph. We prove that the motion of a distance-regular graph of diameter $d \geq 3$ on $n$ vertices is at least $Cn/(\log n)^6$ for some universal constant $C > 0$, unless it is a Johnson, a Hamming or a crown graph. This follows using an improvement of an earlier result by Kivva who gave a lower bound on motion of the form $n/c_d$, where $c_d$ depends exponentially on $d$. As a corollary we derive a quasipolynomial upper bound for the automorphism group of a primitive distance-regular graph acting edge-transitively on the graph and on its distance-2 graph. The proofs use elementary combinatorial arguments and do not depend on the classification of finite simple groups.

On 2-bisections and monochromatic edges in claw-free cubic multigraphs
A $k$-bisection of a multigraph $G$ is a partition of its vertex set into two parts of the same cardinality such that every component of each part has at most $k$ vertices. Cui and Liu shown that every claw-free cubic multigraph contains a $2$-bisection, while Eom and Ozeki constructed specific $2$-bisections with bounded number of monochromatic edges. Their bound is the best possible for claw-free cubic simple graphs. In this note, we extend the latter result to the larger family of claw-free cubic multigraphs

Every Elementary Graph is Chromatic Choosable
Elementary graphs are graphs whose edges can be colored using two colors in such a way that the edges in any induced $P_3$ get distinct colors. They constitute a subclass of the class of claw-free perfect graphs. In this paper, we show that for any elementary graph, its list chromatic number and chromatic number are equal.
A large family of strongly regular graphs with small Weisfeiler-Leman dimension
In 2002, D. Fon-Der-Flaass constructed a prolific family of strongly regular graphs. In this paper, we prove that for infinitely many natural numbers $n$, this family contains $n^{Ω(n^{2/3})}$ strongly regular $n$-vertex graphs $X$ with the same parameters, which satisfy the following condition: an isomorphism between $X$ and any other graph can be verified by the $4$-dimensional Weisfeiler-Leman algorithm.
Tree universality in positional games
Published in Combinator. Probab. Comp. 34 (2025) 338-358 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we consider positional games where the winning sets are tree universal graphs. Specifically, we show that in the unbiased Maker-Breaker game on the complete graph $K_n$, Maker has a strategy to occupy a graph which contains copies of all spanning trees with maximum degree at most $cn/\log(n)$, for a suitable constant $c$ and $n$ being large enough. We also prove an analogous result for Waiter-Client games. Both of our results show that the building player can play at least as good as suggested by the random graph intuition. Moreover, they improve on a special case of earlier results by Johannsen, Krivelevich, and Samotij as well as Han and Yang for Maker-Breaker games.

Dense, irregular, yet always graphic $3$-uniform hypergraph degree sequences
A $3$-uniform hypergraph is a generalization of simple graphs where each hyperedge is a subset of vertices of size $3$. The degree of a vertex in a hypergraph is the number of hyperedges incident with it. The degree sequence of a hypergraph is the sequence of the degrees of its vertices. The degree sequence problem for $3$-uniform hypergraphs is to decide if a $3$-uniform hypergraph exists with a prescribed degree sequence. Such a hypergraph is called a realization. Recently, Deza \emph{et al.} proved that the degree sequence problem for $3$-uniform hypergraphs is NP-complete. Some special cases are easy; however, polynomial algorithms have been known so far only for some very restricted degree sequences. The main result of our research is the following. If all degrees are between $\frac{2n^2}{63}+O(n)$ and $\frac{5n^2}{63}-O(n)$ in a degree sequence $D$, further, the number of vertices is at least $45$, and the degree sum can be divided by $3$, then $D$ has a $3$-uniform hypergraph realization. Our proof is constructive and in fact, it constructs a hypergraph realization in polynomial time for any degree sequence satisfying the properties mentioned above. To our knowledge, this is the first polynomial running time algorithm to construct a $3$-uniform hypergraph realization of a highly irregular and dense degree sequence.

Extremal graphs without long paths and a given graph
For a family of graphs $\mathcal{F}$, the Turán number $ex(n,\mathcal{F})$ is the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex graph containing no member of $\mathcal{F}$ as a subgraph. The maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex connected graph containing no member of $\mathcal{F}$ as a subgraph is denoted by $ex_{conn}(n,\mathcal{F})$. Let $P_k$ be the path on $k$ vertices and $H$ be a graph with chromatic number more than $2$. Katona and Xiao [Extremal graphs without long paths and large cliques, European J. Combin., 2023 103807] posed the following conjecture: Suppose that the chromatic number of $H$ is more than $2$. Then $ex\big(n,\{H,P_k\}\big)=n\max\big\{\big\lfloor \frac{k}{2}\big\rfloor-1,\frac{ex(k-1,H)}{k-1}\big\}+O_k(1)$. In this paper, we determine the exact value of $ex_{conn}\big(n,\{P_k,H\}\big)$ for sufficiently large $n$. Moreover, we obtain asymptotical result for $ex\big(n,\{P_k,H\}\big)$, which solves the conjecture proposed by Katona and Xiao.
List majority edge-colorings of graphs
A majority edge-coloring of a graph without pendant edges is a coloring of its edges such that, for every vertex $v$ and every color $α$, there are at most as many edges incident to $v$ colored with $α$ as with all other colors. We extend some known results for finite graphs to infinite graphs, mostly in the list setting. In particular, we prove that every infinite graph without pendant edges has a majority edge-coloring from lists of size $4$. Another interesting result states that every infinite graph without vertices of finite odd degrees admits a majority edge-coloring from lists of size $2$. We formulate two conjectures. As a consequence of our results, we prove that line graphs of any cardinality admit majority vertex-colorings from lists of size 2, thus confirming the Unfriendly Partition Conjecture for line graphs.
