Arc diagram varieties
Published in in: "Expository lectures on representation theory", Contemporary Mathematics 607, Amer. Math. Soc., Providence, RI, (2014), 205--224 • View PublicationBIB
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field and $α$, $β$, $γ$ be partitions. An algebraic group acts on the constructible set of short exact sequences of nilpotent $k$-linear operators of Jordan types $α$, $β$, and $γ$, respectively; we are interested in the stratification given by the orbits in the case where all parts of $α$ are at most 2. Geometric properties of the degeneration relation are controlled by the combinatorics of arc diagrams. The extended bubble sort algorithm is used to construct chains of orbits such that subsequent strata have dimension difference equal to one.

Families of Hadamard Z2Z4Q8-codes
A Z2Z4Q8-code is a non-empty subgroup of a direct product of copies of Z_2, Z_4 and Q_8 (the binary field, the ring of integers modulo 4 and the quaternion group on eight elements, respectively). Such Z2Z4Q8-codes are translation invariant propelinear codes as the well known Z_4-linear or Z_2Z_4-linear codes. In the current paper, we show that there exist "pure" Z2Z4Q8-codes, that is, codes that do not admit any abelian translation invariant propelinear structure. We study the dimension of the kernel and rank of the Z2Z4Q8-codes, and we give upper and lower bounds for these parameters. We give tools to construct a new class of Hadamard codes formed by several families of Z2Z4Q8-codes; we study and show the different shapes of such a codes and we improve the upper and lower bounds for the rank and the dimension of the kernel when the codes are Hadamard.

Using the subspace theorem to bound unit distances
We prove a special case of Erdős' unit distance problem using a corollary of the subspace theorem bounding the number of solutions of linear equations from a multiplicative group. We restrict our attention to unit distances coming from a multiplicative group of rank $r$ not too large. Specifically, given $\varepsilon>0$ and $n$ points in the plane, we construct the unit distance graph from these points and distances and use the corollary above to bound certain paths of length $k$ in the graph giving at most $n^{1+\varepsilon}$ unit distances from the group above. We require that the rank $r\le c\log n$ for some $c>0$ depending on $\varepsilon$. This extends a result of József Solymosi, Frank de Zeeuw and the author where we only considered unit distances that are roots of unity. Lastly we show that the lower bound configuration for the unit distance problem of Erdős consists of unit distances from a multiplicative subgroup of the form above.

Inequalities on Bruhat graphs, R- and Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Series A 120 (2013) no.2, 470--482 • View PublicationBIB
From a combinatorial perspective, we establish three inequalities on coefficients of $R$- and Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials for crystallographic Coxeter groups: (1) Nonnegativity of $(q-1)$-coefficients of $R$-polynomials, (2) a new criterion of rational singularities of Bruhat intervals by sum of quadratic coefficients of $R$-polynomials, (3) existence of a certain strict inequality (coefficientwise) of Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials. Our main idea is to understand Deodhar's inequality in a connection with a sum of $R$-polynomials and edges of Bruhat graphs.

Nonstandard Analysis and the sumset phenomenon in arbitrary amenable groups
Published in Illinois J. Math. 58 (2014), no. 1, 11-25 • View PublicationBIB
Beiglboeck, Bergelson and Fish proved that if subsets A,B of a countable discrete amenable group G have positive Banach densities a and b respectively, then the product set AB is piecewise syndetic, i.e. there exists k such that the union of k-many left translates of AB is thick. Using nonstandard analysis we give a shorter alternative proof of this result that does not require G to be countable, and moreover yields the explicit bound that k is not greater than 1/ab. We also prove with similar methods that if $\{A_i\}$ are finitely many subsets of G having positive Banach densities $a_i$ and G is countable, then there exists a subset B whose Banach density is at least the product of the densities $a_i$ and such that the product $BB^{-1}$ is a subset of the intersection of the product sets $A_i A_i^{-1}$. In particular, the latter set is piecewise Bohr.
Exclusivity structures and graph representatives of local complementation orbits
Published in Journal of Mathematical Physics 54, 072202 (2013) • View PublicationBIB
We describe a construction that maps any connected graph G on three or more vertices into a larger graph, H(G), whose independence number is strictly smaller than its Lovász number which is equal to its fractional packing number. The vertices of H(G) represent all possible events consistent with the stabilizer group of the graph state associated with G, and exclusive events are adjacent. Mathematically, the graph H(G) corresponds to the orbit of G under local complementation. Physically, the construction translates into graph-theoretic terms the connection between a graph state and a Bell inequality maximally violated by quantum mechanics. In the context of zero-error information theory, the construction suggests a protocol achieving the maximum rate of entanglement-assisted capacity, a quantum mechanical analogue of the Shannon capacity, for each H(G). The violation of the Bell inequality is expressed by the one-shot version of this capacity being strictly larger than the independence number. Finally, given the correspondence between graphs and exclusivity structures, we are able to compute the independence number for certain infinite families of graphs with the use of quantum non-locality, therefore highlighting an application of quantum theory in the proof of a purely combinatorial statement.

Lexicographic shellability of the Bruhat-Chevalley order on fixed-point-free involutions
Published • View PublicationBIB
The main purpose of this paper is to prove that the Bruhat-Chevalley ordering of the symmetric group when restricted to the fixed-point-free involutions forms an $EL$-shellable poset whose order complex triangulates a ball. Another purpose of this article is to prove that the Deodhar-Srinivasan poset is a proper, graded subposet of the Bruhat-Chevalley poset on fixed-point-free involutions.

Dimer spaces and gliding systems
Dimer coverings (or perfect matchings) of a finite graph are classical objects of graph theory appearing in the study of exactly solvable models of statistical mechanics. We introduce more general dimer labelings which form a topological space called the dimer space of the graph. This space turns out to be a cubed complex whose vertices are the dimer coverings. We show that the dimer space is nonpositively curved in the sense of Gromov, so that its universal covering is a CAT(0)-space. We study the fundamental group of the dimer space and, in particular, obtain a presentation of this group by generators and relations. We discuss connections with right-angled Artin groups and braid groups of graphs. Our approach uses so-called gliding systems in groups designed to produce nonpositively curved cubed complexes.

Freiman's theorem in an arbitrary nilpotent group
Published in Proc. London Math. Soc. 109 (2014) 318-352 • View PublicationBIB
We prove a Freiman-Ruzsa-type theorem valid in an arbitrary nilpotent group. Specifically, we show that a K-approximate subgroup A of an s-step nilpotent group G is contained in a coset nilprogression of rank at most f(K) and cardinality at most exp(g(K))|A|, with f and g polynomials depending only on the step s of G. To motivate this, we give a direct proof of Breuillard and Green's analogous result for torsion-free nilpotent groups, avoiding the use of Mal'cev's embedding theorem.

Free partially commutative groups, cohomology, and paths and circuits in directed graphs on surfaces
We show that for each fixed $k$, the problem of finding $k$ pairwise vertex-disjoint directed paths between given source-sink pairs in a planar directed graph is solvable in polynomial time. In fact, it suffices to fix the number of faces needed to cover all sources and sinks. Moreover, the method can be extended to any fixed compact orientable surface (instead of the plane) and to rooted trees (instead of paths). Our approach is algebraic and is based on cohomology over graph (nonabelian) groups. More precisely, let $D=(V,A)$ be a directed graph and let $(G,\cdot)$ be a group. Call two function $φ,ψ:A\to G$ {\em cohomologous} if there exists a function $p:V\to G$ such that $p(u)\cdotφ(a)\cdot p(w)^{-1}=ψ(a)$ for each arc $a=(u,w)$. Now given a function $φ:A\to G$ we want to find a function $ψ$ cohomologous to $φ$ such that each $ψ(a)$ belongs to a prescribed subset $H(a)$ of $G$. We give a polynomial-time algorithm for this problem in case $G$ is a graph group and each $H(a)$ is closed (i.e., if word $xyz$ belongs to $H(a)$ then also word $y$ belongs to $H(a)$). The method also implies that such a $ψ$ exists, if and only if for each $s\in V$ and each pair $P,Q$ of (undirected) $s-s$ paths there exists an $x\in G$ such that $x\cdotφ(P)\cdot x^{-1}\in H(P)$ and $x\cdotφ(Q)\cdot x^{-1}\in H(P)$. (Here $φ(P)$ is the product of the $φ(a)$ over the arcs in $P$. Similarly, $H(P)$ is the (group subset) product of the $H(a)$.)

Weak and strong regularity, compactness, and approximation of polynomials
Let $X$ be an inner product space, let $G$ be a group of orthogonal transformations of $X$, and let $R$ be a bounded $G$-stable subset of $X$. We define very weak and very strong regularity for such pairs $(R,G)$ (in the sense of Szemerédi's regularity lemma), and prove that these two properties are equivalent. Moreover, these properties are equivalent to the compactness of the space $(B(H),d_R)/G$. Here $H$ is the completion of $X$ (a Hilbert space), $B(H)$ is the unit ball in $H$, $d_R$ is the metric on $H$ given by $d_R(x,y):=\sup_{r\in R}|<r,x-y>|$, and $(B(H),d_R)/G$ is the orbit space of $(B(H),d_R)$ (the quotient topological space with the $G$-orbits as quotient classes). As applications we give Szemerédi's regularity lemma, a related regularity lemma for partitions into intervals, and a low rank approximation theorem for homogeneous polynomials.

On virtual link invariants
Virtual links were introduced by Kauffman in 1999. We characterize the virtual link invariants that are partition functions of vertex models (as considered by de la Harpe and Jones), both in the real and in the complex case. We show that for any fixed number of states, these invariants form an affine variety. Basic techniques are the first and second fundamental theorem of invariant theory for the orthogonal group (in the sense of Weyl) and some related methods from algebraic geometry.

Monodromy operators for higher rank

We find the explicit form of the basic monodromy operators for the case of the quantum group $\mathrm U_q(\mathcal L(\mathfrak{sl}_3))$. Expressions for the quantum Casimir elements of the quantum groups $\mathrm U_q(\mathfrak{gl}_3)$ and $\mathrm U_q(\mathfrak{sl}_3)$ are obtained as a by-product.
Hyperovals of $H(3,q^2)$ when $q$ is even
For even $q$, a group $G$ isomorphic to $PSL(2,q)$ stabilizes a Baer conic inside a symplectic subquadrangle ${\cal W}(3,q)$ of ${\cal H}(3,q^2)$. In this paper the action of $G$ on points and lines of ${\cal H}(3,q^2)$ is investigated. A construction is given of an infinite family of hyperovals of size $2(q^3-q)$ of ${\cal H}(3,q^2)$, with each hyperoval having the property that its automorphism group contains $G$. Finally it is shown that the hyperovals constructed are not isomorphic to known hyperovals.

Double Macdonald polynomials as the stable limit of Macdonald superpolynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
Macdonald superpolynomials provide a remarkably rich generalization of the usual Macdonald polynomials. The starting point of this work is the observation of a previously unnoticed stability property of the Macdonald superpolynomials when the fermionic sector m is sufficiently large: their decomposition in the monomial basis is then independent of m. These stable superpolynomials are readily mapped into bisymmetric polynomials, an operation that spoils the ring structure but drastically simplifies the associated vector space. Our main result is a factorization of the (stable) bisymmetric Macdonald polynomials, called double Macdonald polynomials and indexed by pairs of partitions, into a product of Macdonald polynomials (albeit subject to non-trivial plethystic transformations). As an off-shoot, we note that, after multiplication by a t-Vandermonde determinant, this provides explicit formulas for a large class of Macdonald polynomials with prescribed symmetry. The factorization of the double Macdonald polynomials leads immediately to the generalization of basically every elementary properties of the Macdonald polynomials to the double case (norm, kernel, duality, positivity, etc). When lifted back to superspace, this validates various previously formulated conjectures in the stable regime. The q,t-Kostka coefficients associated to the double Macdonald polynomials are shown to be q,t-analogs of the dimensions of the irreducible representations of the hyperoctahedral group B_n. Moreover, a Nabla operator on the double Macdonald polynomials is defined and its action on a certain bisymmetric Schur function can be interpreted as the Frobenius series of a bigraded module of dimension (2n+1)^n, a formula again characteristic of the Coxeter group of type B_n. Finally, as a side result, we obtain a simple identity involving products of four Littlewood-Richardson coefficients.

On intransitive graph-restrictive permutation groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $Γ$ be a finite connected $G$-vertex-transitive graph and let $v$ be a vertex of $Γ$. If the permutation group induced by the action of the vertex-stabiliser $G_v$ on the neighbourhood $Γ(v)$ is permutation isomorphic to $L$, then $(Γ,G)$ is said to be locally-$L$. A permutation group $L$ is graph-restrictive if there exists a constant $c(L)$ such that, for every locally-$L$ pair $(Γ,G)$ and a vertex $v$ of $Γ$, the inequality $|G_v|\leq c(L)$ holds. We show that an intransitive group is graph-restrictive if and only if it is semiregular.

0-Hecke algebra actions on coinvariants and flags
Published • View PublicationBIB
The 0-Hecke algebra $H_n(0)$ is a deformation of the group algebra of the symmetric group $\SS_n$. We show that its coinvariant algebra naturally carries the regular representation of $H_n(0)$, giving an analogue of the well-known result for $\SS_n$ by Chevalley-Shephard-Todd. By investigating the action of $H_n(0)$ on coinvariants and flag varieties, we interpret the generating functions counting the permutations with fixed inverse descent set by their inversion number and major index. We also study the action of $H_n(0)$ on the cohomology rings of the Springer fibers, and similarly interpret the (noncommutative) Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions indexed by hook shapes.

Expanding polynomials over finite fields of large characteristic, and a regularity lemma for definable sets
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $P: \F \times \F \to \F$ be a polynomial of bounded degree over a finite field $\F$ of large characteristic. In this paper we establish the following dichotomy: either $P$ is a moderate asymmetric expander in the sense that $|P(A,B)| \gg |\F|$ whenever $A, B \subset \F$ are such that $|A| |B| \geq C |\F|^{2-1/8}$ for a sufficiently large $C$, or else $P$ takes the form $P(x,y) = Q(F(x)+G(y))$ or $P(x,y) = Q(F(x) G(y))$ for some polynomials $Q,F,G$. This is a reasonably satisfactory classification of polynomials of two variables that moderately expand (either symmetrically or asymmetrically). We obtain a similar classification for weak expansion (in which one has $|P(A,A)| \gg |A|^{1/2} |\F|^{1/2}$ whenever $|A| \geq C |\F|^{1-1/16}$), and a partially satisfactory classification for almost strong asymmetric expansion (in which $|P(A,B)| = (1-O(|\F|^{-c})) |\F|$ when $|A|, |B| \geq |\F|^{1-c}$ for some small absolute constant $c>0$). The main new tool used to establish these results is an algebraic regularity lemma that describes the structure of dense graphs generated by definable subsets over finite fields of large characteristic. This lemma strengthens the Szémeredi regularity lemma in the algebraic case, in that while the latter lemma decomposes a graph into a bounded number of components, most of which are $\eps$-regular for some small but fixed $ε$, the latter lemma ensures that all of the components are $O(|\F|^{-1/4})$-regular. This lemma, which may be of independent interest, relies on some basic facts about the étale fundamental group of an algebraic variety.

A Riccati differential equation and free subgroup numbers for lifts of $\PSL_2(\Z)$ modulo powers of primes
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 120 (2013), 2039-2063 • View PublicationBIB
It is shown that the number $f_λ$ of free subgroups of index $6λ$ in the modular group $\PSL_2(\Z)$, when considered modulo a prime power $p^\al$ with $p\ge5$, is always (ultimately) periodic. In fact, an analogous result is established for a one-parameter family of lifts of the modular group (containing $\PSL_2(\Z)$ as a special case), and for a one-parameter family of lifts of the Hecke group $\mathfrak{H}(4)=C_2*C_4$. All this is achieved by explicitly determining Padé approximants to solutions of a certain multi-parameter family of Riccati differential equations. Our main results complement previous work by Kauers and the authors (arXiv:1107.2015 and ["A method for determining the mod-$3^k$ behaviour of recursive sequences"}, preprint]), where it is shown, among other things, that the free subgroup numbers of $\PSL_2(\Z)$ and its lifts display rather complex behaviour modulo powers of 2 and 3.

Bent functions generalizing Dillon's partial spread functions
This note presents generalizations of the partial spread bent functions introduced by Dillon, as well as the corresponding relative difference sets in nonabelian groups.
