Counting factorizations of Coxeter elements into products of reflections
Published in Journal of the London Mathematical Society, 90 (3):919-939 (2014) • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we count factorizations of Coxeter elements in well-generated complex reflection groups into products of reflections. We obtain a simple product formula for the exponential generating function of such factorizations, which is expressed uniformly in terms of natural parameters of the group. In the case of factorizations of minimal length, we recover a formula due to P. Deligne, J. Tits and D. Zagier in the real case and to D. Bessis in the complex case. For the symmetric group, our formula specializes to a formula of D. M. Jackson.

q-Analogs of Steiner Systems
A Steiner structure $\dS = \dS_q[t,k,n]$ is a set of $k$-dimensional subspaces of $\F_q^n$ such that each $t$-dimensional subspace of $\F_q^n$ is contained in exactly one subspace of $\dS$. Steiner structures are the $q$-analogs of Steiner systems; they are presently known to exist only for $t = 1$, $t=k$, and\linebreak for $k = n$. The existence of nontrivial $q$-analogs of Steiner systems has occupied mathematicians for over three decades. In fact, it was conjectured that they do not exist. In this paper, we show that nontrivial Steiner structures do exist. First, we describe a general method which may be used to produce Steiner structures. The method uses two mappings in a finite field: the Frobenius map and the cyclic shift map. These maps are applied to codes in the Grassmannian, in order to form an automorphism group of the Steiner structure. Using this method, assisted by an exact-cover computer search, we explicitly generate a Steiner structure $\dS_2[2,3,13]$. We conjecture that many other Steiner structures, with different parameters, exist.
Representing and counting the subgroups of the group Z_m x Z_n
Published in Journal of Numbers, Volume 2014, Article ID 491428 • View PublicationBIB
We deduce a simple representation and the invariant factor decompositions of the subgroups of the group $\Bbb{Z}_m \times \Bbb{Z}_n$, where $m$ and $n$ are arbitrary positive integers. We obtain formulas for the total number of subgroups and the number of subgroups of a given order.

Morse Matchings on a Hypersimplex
We present a family of complete acyclic Morse matchings on the face lattice of a hypersimplex. Since a hypersimplex is a convex polytope, there is a natural way to form a CW complex from its faces. In a future paper we will utilize these matchings to classify every subcomplex whose reduced homology groups are concentrated in a single degree and describe a homology basis for each of them.

q-Steiner Systems Do Exist
In this paper we give the first construction of a q-analog of a Steiner system. Using a computer search we found at least 26 q-Steiner Systems S_2[2,3,13] admitting the normalizer of a singer cycle as a group of automorphisms.

The Solecki submeasures and densities on groups
We introduce the Solecki submeasure $σ(A)=\inf_F\sup_{x,y\in G}|F\cap xAy|/|F|$ and its left and right modifications on a group $G$, and study the interplay between the Solecki submeasure and the Haar measure on compact topological groups. Also we show that the right Solecki density on a countable amenable group coincides with the upper Banach density $d^*$ which allows us to generalize some fundamental results of Bogoliuboff, Folner, Cotlar and Ricabarra, Ellis and Keynes about difference sets and Jin, Beiglbock, Bergelson and Fish about the sumsets to the class of all amenable groups.
Algebraic properties of generalized Rijndael-like ciphers
Published • View PublicationBIB
We provide conditions under which the set of Rijndael functions considered as permutations of the state space and based on operations of the finite field $\GF (p^k)$ ($p\geq 2$ a prime number) is not closed under functional composition. These conditions justify using a sequential multiple encryption to strengthen the AES (Rijndael block cipher with specific block sizes) in case AES became practically insecure. In Sparr and Wernsdorf (2008), R. Sparr and R. Wernsdorf provided conditions under which the group generated by the Rijndael-like round functions based on operations of the finite field $\GF (2^k)$ is equal to the alternating group on the state space. In this paper we provide conditions under which the group generated by the Rijndael-like round functions based on operations of the finite field $\GF (p^k)$ ($p\geq 2$) is equal to the symmetric group or the alternating group on the state space.

A Note on Combinatorial Derivation
Given an infinite group $G$ and a subset $A$ of $G$ we let $Δ(A) = {g \in G : |gA \cap A| =\infty}$ (this is sometimes called the combinatorial derivation of $A$). A subset $A$ of $G$ is called large if there exists a finite subset $F$ of $G$ such that $FA=G$. We show that given a large set $X$, and a decomposition $X=A_1 \cup ... \cup A_n$, there must exist an $i$ such that $Δ(A_i)$ is large. This answers a question of Protasov. We also answer a number of related questions of Protasov.

Even-freeness of cyclic 2-designs
A Steiner 2-design of block size k is an ordered pair (V, B) of finite sets such that B is a family of k-subsets of V in which each pair of elements of V appears exactly once. A Steiner 2-design is said to be r-even-free if for every positive integer i =< r it contains no set of i elements of B in which each element of V appears exactly even times. We study the even-freeness of a Steiner 2-design when the cyclic group acts regularly on V. We prove the existence of infinitely many nontrivial Steiner 2-designs of large block size which have the cyclic automorphisms and higher even-freeness than the trivial lower bound but are not the points and lines of projective geometry.

Relating Edelman-Greene insertion to the Little map
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Little map and the Edelman-Greene insertion algorithm, a generalization of the Robinson-Schensted correspondence, are both used for enumerating the reduced decompositions of an element of the symmetric group. We show the Little map factors through Edelman-Greene insertion and establish new results about each map as a consequence. In particular, we resolve some conjectures of Lam and Little.

Coxeter Cochain Complexes
Published • View PublicationBIB
We define the Coxeter cochain complex of a Coxeter group (G,S) with coefficients in a Z[G]-module A. This is closely related to the complex of simplicial cochains on the abstract simplicial complex I(S) of the commuting subsets of S. We give some representative computations of Coxeter cohomology and explain the connection between the Coxeter cohomology for groups of type A, the (singular) homology of certain configuration spaces, and the (Tor) homology of certain local Artin rings.

Graphical Cyclic Permutation Groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
We establish conditions for a permutation group generated by a single permutation of a prime power order to be an automorphism group of a graph or an edge-colored graph. This corrects and generalizes the results of the two papers on cyclic permutation groups published in 1978 and 1981 by S. P. Mohanty, M. R. Sridharan, and S. K. Shukla.

Dimensions of components of tensor products of the linear groups representations with applications to Beurling-Fourier algebras
Published in Studia Math. 220 (2014), no. 3, 221-241 • View PublicationBIB
We give universal upper bounds on the relative dimensions of isotypic components of a tensor product of the linear group GL(n) representations and universal upper bounds on the relative dimensions of irreducible components of a tensor product of the special linear group SL(n) representations. This problem is motivated by harmonic analysis problems, and we give some applications of this result in the theory of Beurling-Fourier algebras.
On the Inverse Erdos-Heilbronn Problem for Restricted Set Addition in Finite Groups
We provide a survey of results concerning both the direct and inverse problems to the Cauchy-Davenport theorem and Erdos-Heilbronn problem in Additive Combinatorics. We formulate an open conjecture concerning the inverse Erdos-Heilbronn problem in nonabelian groups. We extend an inverse to the Dias da Silva-Hamidoune Theorem to Z/nZ where n is composite, and we generalize this result into nonabelian groups.

Full automorphism groups of association schemes based on attenuated spaces
Published • View PublicationBIB
The set of subspaces with a given dimension in an attenuated space has a structure of a symmetric association scheme, which is a generalization of both Grassmann schemes and bilinear forms schemes. In [K. Wang, J. Guo, F. Li, Association schemes based on attenuated space, European J. Combin. 31 (2010) 297--305], its intersection numbers were computed. In this paper, we determine its full automorphism group.

Reflection group relations arising from cluster algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we obtain relations in the Weyl groups of Kac-Moody algebras that come from mutation classes of skew-symmetrizable matrices. These relations generalize those obtained by Barot and Marsh for finite type. As an application, we obtain some combinatorial properties of the mutation classes of skew-symmetrizable matrices.

The most frequent peak set of a random permutation
Given a subset $S\subseteq\mathbb{P}$, let $\Pa(S;n)$ be the number of permutations in the symmetric group of ${1,2,...,n}$ that have peak set $S$. We prove a recent conjecture due to Billey, Burdzy and Sagan, which determines the sets that maximize $\Pa(S;n)$, where $S$ ranges over all subsets of ${1,2,...,n}$.

Noncommutative irreducible characters of the symmetric group and noncommutative Schur functions
Published in J. Comb. 4:403--418 (2013) • View PublicationBIB
In the Hopf algebra of symmetric functions, Sym, the basis of Schur functions is distinguished since every Schur function is isomorphic to an irreducible character of a symmetric group under the Frobenius characteristic map. In this note we show that in the Hopf algebra of noncommutative symmetric functions, Nsym, of which Sym is a quotient, the recently discovered basis of noncommutative Schur functions exhibits that every noncommutative Schur function is isomorphic to a noncommutative irreducible character of a symmetric group when working in noncommutative character theory. We simultaneously show that a second basis of Nsym consisting of Young noncommutative Schur functions also satisfies that every element is isomorphic to a noncommutative irreducible character of a symmetric group.

Arc Permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
Arc permutations and unimodal permutations were introduced in the study of triangulations and characters. This paper studies combinatorial properties and structures on these permutations. First, both sets are characterized by pattern avoidance. It is also shown that arc permutations carry a natural affine Weyl group action, and that the number of geodesics between a distinguished pair of antipodes in the associated Schreier graph, as well as the number of maximal chains in the weak order on unimodal permutations, are both equal to twice the number of standard Young tableaux of shifted staircase shape. Finally, a bijection from non-unimodal arc permutations to Young tableaux of certain shapes, which preserves the descent set, is described and applied to deduce a conjectured character formula of Regev.

Automorphisms of Codes in the Grassmann Scheme
Two mappings in a finite field, the Frobenius mapping and the cyclic shift mapping, are applied on lines in PG($n,p$) or codes in the Grassmannian, to form automorphisms groups in the Grassmanian and in its codes. These automorphisms are examined on two classical coding problems in the Grassmannian. The first is the existence of a parallelism with lines in the related projective geometry and the second is the existence of a Steiner structure. A computer search was applied to find parallelisms and codes. A new parallelism of lines in PG(5,3) was formed. A parallelism with these parameters was not known before. A large code which is only slightly short of a Steiner structure was formed.
