We investigate the arithmetic-geometric structure of the lecture hall cone \[ L_n \ := \ \left\{λ\in \mathbb{R}^n: \, 0\leq \frac{λ_1}{1}\leq \frac{λ_2}{2}\leq \frac{λ_3}{3}\leq \cdots \leq \frac{λ_n}{n}\right\} . \] We show that $L_n$ is isomorphic to the cone over the lattice pyramid of a reflexive simplex whose Ehrhart $h^*$-polynomial is given by the $(n-1)$st Eulerian polynomial, and prove that lecture hall cones admit regular, flag, unimodular triangulations. After explicitly describing the Hilbert basis for $L_n$, we conclude with observations and a conjecture regarding the structure of unimodular triangulations of $L_n$, including connections between enumerative and algebraic properties of $L_n$ and cones over unit cubes.

Given an integral $d \times n$ matrix $A$, the well-studied affine semigroup $\mbox{ Sg} (A)=\{ b : Ax=b, \ x \in {\mathbb Z}^n, x \geq 0\}$ can be stratified by the number of lattice points inside the parametric polyhedra $P_A(b)=\{x: Ax=b, x\geq0\}$. Such families of parametric polyhedra appear in many areas of combinatorics, convex geometry, algebra and number theory. The key themes of this paper are: (1) A structure theory that characterizes precisely the subset $\mbox{ Sg}_{\geq k}(A)$ of all vectors $b \in \mbox{ Sg}(A)$ such that $P_A(b) \cap {\mathbb Z}^n $ has at least $k$ solutions. We demonstrate that this set is finitely generated, it is a union of translated copies of a semigroup which can be computed explicitly via Hilbert bases computations. Related results can be derived for those right-hand-side vectors $b$ for which $P_A(b) \cap {\mathbb Z}^n$ has exactly $k$ solutions or fewer than $k$ solutions. (2) A computational complexity theory. We show that, when $n$, $k$ are fixed natural numbers, one can compute in polynomial time an encoding of $\mbox{ Sg}_{\geq k}(A)$ as a multivariate generating function, using a short sum of rational functions. As a consequence, one can identify all right-hand-side vectors of bounded norm that have at least $k$ solutions. (3) Applications and computation for the $k$-Frobenius numbers. Using Generating functions we prove that for fixed $n,k$ the $k$-Frobenius number can be computed in polynomial time. This generalizes a well-known result for $k=1$ by R. Kannan. Using some adaptation of dynamic programming we show some practical computations of $k$-Frobenius numbers and their relatives.
On Hilbert bases of cuts

A Hilbert basis is a set of vectors X such that the integer cone (semigroup) generated by X is the intersection of the lattice generated by X with the cone generated by X. Define a graph to be (cut) Hilbert if its set of cuts forms a Hilbert basis. We show that the Hilbert property is not closed under edge deletions, subdivisions, nor 2-sums. Furthermore, no graph having K_6-e as a minor is Hilbert. This corrects an error in [M. Laurent. Hilbert bases of cuts. Discrete Math., 150(1-3):257-279 (1996)]. For positive results, we give conditions under which the 2-sum of two graphs produces a Hilbert graph. Using these conditions we show that all H-minor-free graphs are Hilbert , where H is the unique 3-connected graph obtained by uncontracting an edge of K_5. We also establish a relationship between edge deletion and subdivision. Namely, if G' is obtained from a Hilbert graph G by subdividing an edge e two or more times, then G-e is Hilbert if and only if G' is Hilbert.

We describe the use of pyramid decomposition in Normaliz, a software tool for the computation of Hilbert bases and enumerative data of rational cones and affine monoids. Pyramid decomposition in connection with efficient parallelization and streamlined evaluation of simplicial cones has enabled Normaliz to process triangulations of size $\approx 5\cdot 10^{11}$ that arise in the computation of Hilbert series related to combinatorial voting theory.

In this paper we present two independent computational proofs that the monoid derived from $5\times 5\times 3$ contingency tables is normal, completing the classification by Hibi and Ohsugi. We show that Vlach's vector disproving normality for the monoid derived from $6\times 4\times 3$ contingency tables is the unique minimal such vector up to symmetry. Finally, we compute the full Hilbert basis of the cone associated with the non-normal monoid of the semi-graphoid for $|N|=5$. The computations are based on extensions of the packages LattE-4ti2 and Normaliz.

Normaliz is a tool for the computation of Hilbert bases of normal affine monoids and related tasks. We describe the Macaulay 2 interface to Normaliz. It makes Normaliz accessible for operations on monoid algebras in Macaulay 2 and, conversely, makes Macaulay 2 a frontend for Normaliz.

Let C be a clutter and let I be its edge ideal. We present a combinatorial description of the minimal generators of the symbolic Rees algebra Rs(I) of I. It is shown that the minimal generators of Rs(I) are in one to one correspondence with the irreducible parallelizations of C. From our description some major results on symbolic Rees algebras of perfect graphs and clutters will follow. As a byproduct, we give a method, using Hilbert bases, to compute all irreducible parallelizations of C along with all the corresponding vertex covering numbers.

If C is a clutter with n vertices and q edges whose clutter matrix has column vectors V={v1,...,vq}, we call C an Ehrhart clutter if {(v1,1),...,(vq,1)} is a Hilbert basis. Letting A(P) be the Ehrhart ring of P=conv(V), we are able to show that if A is the clutter matrix of a uniform, unmixed MFMC clutter C, then C is an Ehrhart clutter and in this case we provide sharp bounds on the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of A(P). Motivated by the Conforti-Cornuejols conjecture on packing problems, we conjecture that if C is both ideal and the clique clutter of a perfect graph, then C has the MFMC property. We prove this conjecture for Meyniel graphs, by showing that the clique clutters of Meyniel graphs are Ehrhart clutters. In much the same spirit, we provide a simple proof of our conjecture when C is a uniform clique clutter of a perfect graph. We close with a generalization of Ehrhart clutters as it relates to total dual integrality.
Sports scheduling for not all pairs of teams
We consider the following sports scheduling problem. Consider $2n$ teams in a sport league. Each pair of teams must play exactly one match in $2n-1$ days. That is, $n$ games are held simultaneously in a day. We want to make a schedule which has $n(2n-1)$ games for $2n-1$ days.
When we make a schedule, the schedule must satisfy a constraint according to the HAP table, which designates a home game or an away game for each team and each date. Two teams cannot play against each other unless one team is assigned to a home game and the other team is assigned to an away game. Recently, D. Briskorn proposed a necessary condition for a HAP table to have a proper schedule. And he proposed a conjecture that such a condition is also sufficient. That is, if a solution to the linear inequalities exists, they must have an integral solution. In this paper, we rewrite his conjecture by using perfect matchings. We consider a monoid in the affine space generated by perfect matchings. In terms of the Hilbert basis of such a monoid, the problem is naturally generalized to a scheduling problem for not all pairs of teams described by a regular graph. In this paper, we show a regular graph such that the corresponding linear inequalities have a solution but do not have any integral solution. Moreover we discuss for which regular graphs the statement generalizing the conjecture holds.
Alternatives for Testing Total Dual Integrality
In this paper we provide characterizing properties of TDI systems, among others the following: a system of linear inequalities is TDI if and only if its coefficient vectors form a Hilbert basis, and there exists a test-set for the system's dual integer programs where all test vectors have positive entries equal to 1. Reformulations of this provide relations between computational algebra and integer programming and they contain Applegate, Cook and McCormick's sufficient condition for the TDI property and Sturmfels' theorem relating toric initial ideals generated by square-free monomials to unimodular triangulations. We also study the theoretical and practical efficiency and limits of the characterizations of the TDI property presented here.
In the particular case of set packing polyhedra our results correspond to endowing the weak perfect graph theorem with an additional, computationally interesting, geometric feature: the normal fan of the stable set polytope of a perfect graph can be refined into a regular triangulation consisting only of unimodular cones.

Let C be a uniform clutter, i.e., all the edges of C have the same size, and let A be the incidence matrix of C. We denote the column vectors of A by v1,...,vq. The vertex covering number of C, denoted by g, is the smallest number of vertices in any minimal vertex cover of C. Under certain conditions we prove that C is vertex critical. If C satisfies the max-flow min-cut property, we prove that A diagonalizes over the integers to an identity matrix and that v1,...,vq is a Hilbert basis. It is shown that if C has a perfect matching such that C has the packing property and g=2, then A diagonalizes over the integers to an identity matrix. If A is a balanced matrix we prove that any regular triangulation of the cone generated by v1,...,vq is unimodular. Some examples are presented to show that our results only hold for uniform clutters. These results are closely related to certain algebraic properties, such as the normality or torsion freeness, of blowup algebras of edge ideals and to finitely generated abelian groups. They are also related to the theory of Gröbner bases of toric ideals and to Ehrhart rings.

Let G be a simple graph and let J be its ideal of vertex covers. We give a graph theoretical description of the irreducible b-vertex covers of G, i.e., we describe the minimal generators of the symbolic Rees algebra of J. Then we study the irreducible b-vertex covers of the blocker of G, i.e., we study the minimal generators of the symbolic Rees algebra of the edge ideal of G. We give a graph theoretical description of the irreducible binary b-vertex covers of the blocker of G. It is shown that they correspond to irreducible induced subgraphs of G. As a byproduct we obtain a method, using Hilbert bases, to obtain all irreducible induced subgraphs of G. In particular we obtain all odd holes and antiholes. We study irreducible graphs and give a method to construct irreducible b-vertex covers of the blocker of G with high degree relative to the number of vertices of G.

A new Z-basis for the space of quasisymmetric functions (QSym, for short) is presented. It is shown to have nonnegative structure constants, and several interesting properties relative to the space of quasisymmetric functions associated to matroids by the Hopf algebra morphism (F) of Billera, Jia, and Reiner. In particular, for loopless matroids, this basis reflects the grading by matroid rank, as well as by the size of the ground set. It is shown that the morphism F is injective on the set of rank two matroids, and that decomposability of the quasisymmetric function of a rank two matroid mirrors the decomposability of its base polytope. An affirmative answer is given to the Hilbert basis question raised by Billera, Jia, and Reiner.

In this paper, we relate the problem of generating all 2-level orthogonal arrays of given dimension and force, i.e. elements in OA$(n,m)$, where $n$ is the number of factors and $m$ the force, to the solution of an Integer Programming problem involving rational convex cones. We do not restrict the number of points in the array, i.e. we admit any number of replications. This problem can be theoretically solved by means of Hilbert bases which form a finite generating set for all the elements in in the infinite set OA$(n,m)$. We discuss some examples which are explicitly solved with a software performing Hilbert bases computation.

For which finite subgroups G of SL(r,C), r \geq 4, are there crepant desingularizations of the quotient space C^r/G? A complete answer to this question (also known as "Existence Problem" for such desingularizations) would classify all those groups for which the high-dimensional versions of McKay correspondence are valid. In the paper we consider this question in the case of abelian finite subgroups of SL(r,C) by using techniques from toric and discrete geometry. We give two necessary existence conditions, involving the Hilbert basis elements of the cone supporting the junior simplex, and an Upper Bound Theorem, respectively. Moreover, to the known series of Gorenstein abelian quotient singularities admitting projective, crepant resolutions (which are briefly recapitulated) we add a new series of non-c.i. cyclic quotient singularities having this property.
Algebraic Combinatorics of Magic Squares
We describe how to construct and enumerate Magic squares, Franklin squares, Magic cubes, and Magic graphs as lattice points inside polyhedral cones using techniques from Algebraic Combinatorics. The main tools of our methods are the Hilbert Poincare series to enumerate lattice points and the Hilbert bases to generate lattice points. We define polytopes of magic labelings of graphs and digraphs, and give a description of the faces of the Birkhoff polytope as polytopes of magic labelings of digraphs.

In this article, we construct and enumerate magic labelings of graphs using Hilbert bases of polyhedral cones and Ehrhart quasi-polynomials of polytopes. We define polytopes of magic labelings of graphs and digraphs. We give a description of the faces of the Birkhoff polytope as polytopes of magic labelings of digraphs.

We prove that for any fixed d the generating function of the projection of the set of integer points in a rational d-dimensional polytope can be computed in polynomial time. As a corollary, we deduce that various interesting sets of lattice points, notably integer semigroups and (minimal) Hilbert bases of rational cones, have short rational generating functions provided certain parameters (the dimension and the number of generators) are fixed. It follows then that many computational problems for such sets (for example, finding the number of positive integers not representable as a non-negative integer combination of given coprime positive integers a_1 ... a_d admit polynomial time algorithms. We also discuss a related problem of computing the Hilbert series of a ring generated by monomials.

In this paper we present a novel project-and-lift approach to compute the set of minimal generators of the semigroup $(Λ\cap\R^n_+,+)$ for lattices $Λ\subseteq\Z^n$. This problem class includes the computation of Hilbert bases of cones $\{z:Az=0,z\in\R^n_+\}$ for integer matrices $A$. A similar approach can be used to compute only the extreme rays of such cones. Finally, some combinatorial applications and computational experience are presented.
