Integer Compositions Applied to the Probability Analysis of Blackjack and the Infinite Deck Assumption
Composition theory can be used to analyze and enumerate the number of ways a dealer in Blackjack can reach any given point total. The rules of Blackjack provide several restrictions on the number of compositions of a given number. While theory guarantees a specific number of unrestricted compositions of any positive integer, we must subtract the number of compositions not allowed in Blackjack. We present a constructive approach to enumerate the number of possible compositions for any point value by deleting those illegal compositions from the total number of unrestricted compositions. Our results cover all possible cases and also generalize to changes to the rules of Blackjack, such as the point value where the dealer must stand. Using the infinite deck assumption, we also find the approximate probability that the dealer reaches that point total.
Deriving Faà di Bruno's formula for the derivative of a composite function via compositions of integers
We give yet another proof for Faà di Bruno's formula for higher derivatives of composite functions. Our proof technique relies on reinterpreting the composition of two power series as the generating function for weighted integer compositions, for which a Faà di Bruno-like formula is quite naturally established.

We introduce a functorial construction which, from a monoid, produces a set-operad. We obtain new (symmetric or not) operads as suboperads or quotients of the operads obtained from usual monoids such as the additive and multiplicative monoids of integers and cyclic monoids. They involve various familiar combinatorial objects: endofunctions, parking functions, packed words, permutations, planar rooted trees, trees with a fixed arity, Schröder trees, Motzkin words, integer compositions, directed animals, and segmented integer compositions. We also recover some already known (symmetric or not) operads: the magmatic operad, the associative commutative operad, the diassociative operad, and the triassociative operad. We provide presentations by generators and relations of all constructed nonsymmetric operads.

This paper deals with the so-called Stanley conjecture, which asks whether they are non-isomorphic trees with the same symmetric function generalization of the chromatic polynomial. By establishing a correspondence between caterpillars trees and integer compositions, we prove that caterpillars in a large class (we call trees in this class proper) have the same symmetric chromatic function generalization of the chromatic polynomial if and only if they are isomorphic.

We introduce a functorial construction which, from a monoid, produces a set-operad. We obtain new (symmetric or not) operads as suboperads or quotients of the operad obtained from the additive monoid. These involve various familiar combinatorial objects: parking functions, packed words, planar rooted trees, generalized Dyck paths, Schröder trees, Motzkin paths, integer compositions, directed animals, etc. We also retrieve some known operads: the magmatic operad, the commutative associative operad, and the diassociative operad.

A poset can be regarded as a category in which there is at most one morphism between objects, and such that at most one of Hom(c,c') and Hom(c',c) is nonempty for distinct objects c,c'. If we keep in place the latter axiom but allow for more than one morphism between objects, we have a sort of generalized poset in which there are multiplicities attached to covering relations, and possibly nontrivial automorphism groups. We call such a category an "updown category". In this paper we give a precise definition of such categories and develop a theory for them. We also give a detailed account of ten examples, including updown categories of integer partitions, integer compositions, planar rooted trees, and rooted trees.

If $S$ is a cofinite set of positive integers, an "$S$-restricted composition of $n$" is a sequence of elements of $S$, denoted $\vecλ=(λ_1,λ_2,...)$, whose sum is $n$. For uniform random $S$-restricted compositions, the random variable ${\bf B}(\vecλ)=\prod_i λ_i$ is asymptotically lognormal. The proof is based upon a combinatorial technique for decomposing a composition into a sequence of smaller compositions.
Asymptotic normality of integer compositions inside a rectangle
Among all restricted integer compositions with at most $m$ parts, each of which has size at most $l$, choose one uniformly at random. Which integer does this composition represent? In the current note, we show that underlying distribution is, for large $m$ and $l$, approximately normal with mean value $\frac{ml}{2}$.
Integer compositions with part sizes not exceeding k
We study the compositions of an integer n whose part sizes do not exceed a fixed integer k. We use the methods of analytic combinatorics to obtain precise asymptotic formulas for the number of such compositions, the total number of parts among all such compositions, the expected number of parts in such a composition, the total number of times a particular part size appears among all such compositions, and the expected multiplicity of a given part size in such a composition. Along the way we also obtain recurrences and generating functions for calculating several of these quantities. Our results also apply to questions about certain kinds of tilings and rhythm patterns.
Partitions and Partial Matchings Avoiding Neighbor Patterns

We obtain the generating functions for partial matchings avoiding neighbor alignments and for partial matchings avoiding neighbor alignments and left nestings. We show that there is a bijection between partial matchings avoiding three neighbor patterns (neighbor alignments, left nestings and right nestings) and set partitions avoiding right nestings via an intermediate structure of integer compositions. Such integer compositions are known to be in one-to-one correspondence with self-modified ascent sequences or $3\bar{1}52\bar{4}$-avoiding permutations, as shown by Bousquet-Mélou, Claesson, Dukes and Kitaev.
The Möbius function of partitions with restricted block size

We study filters in the partition lattice formed by restricting to partitions by type. The Möbius function is determined in terms of the easier-to-compute descent set statistics on permutations and the Möbius function of filters in the lattice of integer compositions. When the underlying integer partition is a knapsack partition, the Möbius function on integer compositions is determined by a topological argument. In this proof the permutahedron makes a cameo appearance.

This note examines a problem in enumerative and asymptotic combinatorics involving the classical structure of integer compositions. What is sought is an analysis on average and in distribution of the length of the longest run of consecutive equal parts in a composition of size n. The problem was recently posed by Herbert Wilf (see arXiv: 0906.5196).

We find the generating function for $C(n,k,r)$, the number of compositions of $n$ into $k$ positive parts all of whose runs (contiguous blocks of constant parts) have lengths less than $r$, using recent generalizations of the method of Guibas and Odlyzko for finding the number of words that avoid a given list of subwords.
Rationality of the Möbius function of a composition poset
We consider the zeta and Möbius functions of a partial order on integer compositions first studied by Bergeron, Bousquet-Mélou, and Dulucq. The Möbius function of this poset was determined by Sagan and Vatter. We prove rationality of various formal power series in noncommuting variables whose coefficients are evaluations of the zeta function and the Möbius function. The proofs are either directly from the definitions or by constructing finite-state automata.
We also obtain explicit expressions for generating functions obtained by specializing the variables to commutative ones. We reprove Sagan and Vatter's formula for the Möbius function using this machinery. These results are closely related to those of Björner and Reutenauer about subword order, and we discuss a common generalization.
On conjugates for set partitions and integer compositions
There is a familiar conjugate for integer partitions: transpose the Ferrers diagram, and a conjugate for integer compositions: transpose a Ferrers-like diagram. Here we propose a conjugate for set partitions and show that it interchanges # singletons and # adjacencies. Its restriction to noncrossing partitions cropped up in a 1972 paper of Kreweras. We also exhibit an analogous pairs of statistics interchanged by the composition conjugate.
Pattern avoidance in compositions and multiset permutations

We study pattern avoidance by combinatorial objects other than permutations, namely by ordered partitions of an integer and by permutations of a multiset. In the former case we determine the generating function explicitly, for integer compositions of n that avoid a given pattern of length 3 and we show that the answer is the same for all such patterns. We also show that the number of multiset permutations that avoid a given three-letter pattern is the same for all such patterns, thereby extending and refining earlier results of Albert, Aldred et al., and by Atkinson, Walker and Linton. Further, the number of permutations of a multiset S, with a_i copies of i for i = 1, ..., k, that avoid a given permutation pattern in S_3 is a symmetric function of the a_i's, and we will give here a bijective proof of this fact first for the pattern (123), and then for all patterns in S_3 by using a recently discovered bijection of Amy N. Myers.
Decomposable compositions, symmetric quasisymmetric functions and equality of ribbon Schur functions

We define an equivalence relation on integer compositions and show that two ribbon Schur functions are identical if and only if their defining compositions are equivalent in this sense. This equivalence is completely determined by means of a factorization for compositions: equivalent compositions have factorizations that differ only by reversing some of the terms. As an application, we can derive identities on certain Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. Finally, we consider the cone of symmetric functions having a nonnnegative representation in terms of the fundamental quasisymmetric basis. We show the Schur functions are among the extremes of this cone and conjecture its facets are in bijection with the equivalence classes of compositions.
Updown Categories
A poset can be regarded as a category in which there is at most one morphism between objects, and such that at most one of Hom(c,c') and Hom(c',c) is nonempty for c not equal to c'. If we keep in place the latter axiom but allow for more than one morphism between objects, we can have a sort of generalized poset in which there are multiplicities attached to the covering relations, and possibly nontrivial automorphism groups. We call such a category an "updown category." In this paper we give a precise definition of such categories and develop a theory for them, which incorporates earlier notions of differential posets and weighted-relation posets. We also give a detailed account of ten examples, including the updown categories of integer partitions, integer compositions, planar rooted trees, and rooted trees.
