Combinatorial formulas for arithmetic density
Published in Integers 22, Article A63 (2022) • Search Publication
Let $d_S$ denote the arithmetic density of a subset $S \subseteq \mathbb N$. We derive a power series in $q\in \mathbb C$, $|q|<1$, with coëfficients related to integer partitions and integer compositions, that yields $1/d_S$ in the limit as $q\to 1$ radially.

Weighted posets and the enriched monomial basis of QSym (extended abstract)
Published in Séminaire Lotharingien de Combinatoire, 85B.58 (2021), 12 pp • View PublicationBIB
Gessel's fundamental and Stembridge's peak functions are the generating functions for (enriched) $P$-partitions on labelled chains. They are also the bases of two significant subalgebras of formal power series, respectively the ring of quasisymmetric functions (QSym) and the algebra of peaks. Hsiao introduced the monomial peak functions, a basis of the algebra of peaks indexed by odd integer compositions whose relation to peak functions mimics the one between the monomial and fundamental bases of QSym. We show that the extension of monomial peaks to any composition is a new basis of QSym and generalise Hsiao's results including the product rule. To this end we introduce a weighted variant of posets and study their generating functions.

$\mathbb{Q}$-bonacci words and numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present a quite curious generalization of multi-step Fibonacci numbers. For any positive rational $q$, we enumerate binary words of length $n$ whose maximal factors of the form $0^a1^b$ satisfy $a = 0$ or $aq > b$. When $q$ is an integer we rediscover classical multi-step Fibonacci numbers: Fibonacci, Tribonacci, Tetranacci, etc. When $q$ is not an integer, obtained recurrence relations are connected to certain restricted integer compositions. We also discuss Gray codes for these words, and a possibly novel generalization of the golden ratio.
Minimum degrees of finite rectangular bands, null semigroups, and variants of full transformation semigroups
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a positive integer $n$, the full transformation semigroup $T_n$ consists of all self maps of the set $\{1,\ldots,n\}$ under composition. Any finite semigroup $S$ embeds in some $T_n$, and the least such $n$ is called the (minimum transformation) degree of $S$ and denoted $μ(S)$. We find degrees for various classes of finite semigroups, including rectangular bands, rectangular groups and null semigroups. The formulae we give involve natural parameters associated to integer compositions. Our results on rectangular bands answer a question of Easdown from 1992, and our approach utilises some results of independent interest concerning partitions/colourings of hypergraphs. As an application, we prove some results on the degree of a variant $T_n^a$. (The variant $S^a=(S,\star)$ of a semigroup $S$, with respect to a fixed element $a\in S$, has underlying set $S$ and operation $x\star y=xay$.) It has been previously shown that $n\leq μ(T_n^a)\leq 2n-r$ if the sandwich element $a$ has rank $r$, and the upper bound of $2n-r$ is known to be sharp if $r\geq n-1$. Here we show that $μ(T_n^a)=2n-r$ for $r\geq n-6$. In stark contrast to this, when $r=1$, and the above inequality says $n\leqμ(T_n^a)\leq 2n-1$, we show that $μ(T_n^a)/n\to1$ and $μ(T_n^a)-n\to\infty$ as $n\to\infty$. Among other results, we also classify the $3$-nilpotent subsemigroups of $T_n$, and calculate the maximum size of such a subsemigroup.

Representation of Dyck words in tensors that zipper merge contiguous integer compositions
Let $0<k\in\mathbb{Z}$. We zipper-merge integer compositions with sums $k$ and $k+1$, equal number of parts and initial entries equal at least to 1 and 2, respectively. This yields bitstrings with two initial zeros, $k-1$ remaining zeros and $k$ ones. Tensors whose entries are such bitstrings contain unique representations of all Dyck words of length $2k$. If rows and columns of such tensors are disposed in descending lexicographic order, then their entries not representing Dyck words form disjoint unions of descending staircases corresponding to strict lower triangular submatrices.

Fertilitopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce tools from discrete convexity theory and polyhedral geometry into the theory of West's stack-sorting map $s$. Associated to each permutation $π$ is a particular set $\mathcal V(π)$ of integer compositions that appears in a formula for the fertility of $π$, which is defined to be $|s^{-1}(π)|$. These compositions also feature prominently in more general formulas involving families of colored binary plane trees called troupes and in a formula that converts from free to classical cumulants in noncommutative probability theory. We show that $\mathcal V(π)$ is a transversal discrete polymatroid when it is nonempty. We define the fertilitope of $π$ to be the convex hull of $\mathcal V(π)$, and we prove a surprisingly simple characterization of fertilitopes as nestohedra arising from full binary plane trees. Using known facts about nestohedra, we provide a procedure for describing the structure of the fertilitope of $π$ directly from $π$ using Bousquet-Mélou's notion of the canonical tree of $π$. As a byproduct, we obtain a new combinatorial cumulant conversion formula in terms of generalizations of canonical trees that we call quasicanonical trees. We also apply our results on fertilitopes to study combinatorial properties of the stack-sorting map. In particular, we show that the set of fertility numbers has density $1$, and we determine all infertility numbers of size at most $126$. Finally, we reformulate the conjecture that $\sum_{σ\in s^{-1}(π)}x^{\text{des}(σ)+1}$ is always real-rooted in terms of nestohedra, and we propose natural ways in which this new version of the conjecture could be extended.

Covariance within Random Integer Compositions
Fix a positive integer $N$. Select an additive composition $ξ$ of $N$ uniformly out of $2^{N-1}$ possibilities. The interplay between the number of parts in $ξ$ and the maximum part in $ξ$ is our focus. It is not surprising that correlations $ρ(N)$ between these quantities are negative; we earlier gave inconclusive evidence that $\lim_{N \to \infty} ρ(N)$ is strictly less than zero. A proof of this result would imply asymptotic dependence. We now retract our presumption in such an unforeseen outcome. Similar experimental findings apply when $ξ$ is a 1-free composition, i.e., possessing only parts $\geq 2$.

Bounds on Sweep-Covers by Raney Numbers
In this work, we introduce a vertex separator in trees known as a sweep-cover that is defined by an ancestor-descendent relationship with all nodes in the tree. We prove the recurrence relation of sweep-covers with $n$ subcovers $P_{Δ, γ}(n)$ on a class of infinite $Δ$-ary trees with constant path lengths $γ$ between the $Δ$-star internal nodes. Then, we provide recurrence relations for Raney numbers over integer compositions and show that they provide a lower-bound for sweep-covers such that $P_{Δ, γ}(n) = Ω\left( \frac{\sqrt{2 π} n^{Δn + Δ+ \frac{3}{2}}}{e^n ((Δ-1)n+Δ+1)!(n+1)!} γ\right)$.

Combinatorics of Multicompositions
Published in Combinatorial and Additive Number Theory IV, ed. Nathanson, Springer Proceedings 347 (2021) 307-321 • View PublicationBIB
Integer compositions with certain colored parts were introduced by Andrews in 2007 to address a number-theoretic problem. Integer compositions allowing zero as some parts were introduced by Ouvry and Polychronakos in 2019. We give a bijection between these two varieties of compositions and determine various combinatorial properties of these multicompositions. In particular, we determine the count of multicompositions by number of all parts, number of positive parts, and number of zeros. Then, working from three types of compositions with restricted parts that are counted by the Fibonacci sequence, we find the sequences counting multicompositions with analogous restrictions. With these tools, we give combinatorial proofs of summation formulas for generalizations of the Jacobsthal and Pell sequences.

Duality of graded graphs through operads
Published in Annals of Combinatorics, 2021 • View PublicationBIB
Pairs of graded graphs, together with the Fomin property of graded graph duality, are rich combinatorial structures providing among other a framework for enumeration. The prototypical example is the one of the Young graded graph of integer partitions, allowing us to connect number of standard Young tableaux and numbers of permutations. Here, we use operads, that algebraic devices abstracting the notion of composition of combinatorial objects, to build pairs of graded graphs. For this, we first construct a pair of graded graphs where vertices are syntax trees, the elements of free nonsymmetric operads. This pair of graphs is dual for a new notion of duality called $φ$-diagonal duality, similar to the ones introduced by Fomin. We also provide a general way to build pairs of graded graphs from operads, wherein underlying posets are analogous to the Young lattice. Some examples of operads leading to new pairs of graded graphs involving integer compositions, Motzkin paths, and $m$-trees are considered.

Shift-Plethystic Trees and Rogers-Ramanujan Identitites
By studying non-commutative series in an infinite alphabet we introduce shift-plethystic trees and a class of integer compositions as new combinatorial models for the Rogers-Ramanujan identities. We prove that the language associated to shift-plethystic trees can be expressed as a non-commutative generalization of the Rogers-Ramanujan continued fraction. By specializing the noncommutative series to $q$-series we obtain new combinatorial interpretations to the Rogers-Ramanujan identities in terms of signed integer compositions. We introduce the operation of shift-plethysm on non-commutative series and use this to obtain interesting enumerative identities involving compositions and partitions related to Rogers-Ramanujan identities.

Further Combinatorics and Applications of Two-Toned Tilings

Integer compositions, integer partitions, Fibonacci numbers, and generalizations of these have recently been shown to be interconnected via two-toned tilings of horizontal grids. In this article, we present refinements of two-toned tilings, describe functions which analyze them, and apply these to generalizations of integer compositions and partitions which interpolate between the two.

The Hopf Monoid of Orbit Polytopes
Published in Journal of Combinatorics 11 (2020) 575-601 • View PublicationBIB
Many families of combinatorial objects have a Hopf monoid structure. Aguiar and Ardila introduced the Hopf monoid of generalized permutahedra and showed that it contains various other notable combinatorial families as Hopf submonoids, including graphs, posets, and matroids. We introduce the Hopf monoid of orbit polytopes, which is generated by the generalized permutahedra that are invariant under the action of the symmetric group. We show that modulo normal equivalence, these polytopes are in bijection with integer compositions. We interpret the Hopf structure through this lens, and we show that applying the first Fock functor to this Hopf monoid gives a Hopf algebra of compositions. We describe the character group of the Hopf monoid of orbit polytopes in terms of noncommutative symmetric functions, and we give a combinatorial interpretation of the basic character and its polynomial invariant.

Prolific Compositions
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, Vol. 21 no. 2, Permutation Patters 2018, Permutation Patterns (December 13, 2019) dmtcs:5373 • View PublicationBIB
Under what circumstances might every extension of a combinatorial structure contain more copies of another one than the original did? This property, which we call prolificity, holds universally in some cases (e.g., finite linear orders) and only trivially in others (e.g., permutations). Integer compositions, or equivalently layered permutations, provide a middle ground. In that setting, there are prolific compositions for a given pattern if and only if that pattern begins and ends with 1. For each pattern, there is an easily constructed automaton that recognises prolific compositions for that pattern. Some instances where there is a unique minimal prolific composition for a pattern are classified.

Enumerative properties of restricted words and compositions
In this document we achieve exact and asymptotic enumeration of words, compositions over a finite group, and/or integer compositions characterized by local restrictions and, separately, subsequence pattern avoidance. We also count cyclically restricted and circular objects. This either fills gaps in the current literature by e.g. considering particular new patterns, or involves general progress, notably with locally restricted compositions over a finite group. We associate these compositions to walks on a covering graph whose structure is exploited to simplify asymptotic expressions. Specifically, we show that under certain conditions the number of locally restricted compositions of a group element is asymptotically independent of the group element. For some problems our results extend to the case of a positive number of subword pattern occurrences (instead of zero for pattern avoidance) or convergence in distribution of the normalized number of occurrences. We typically apply the more general propositions to concrete examples such as the familiar Carlitz compositions or simple subword patterns.

Locally Restricted Sequential Structures and Runs of a Subcomposition in Integer Compositions
We study part sizes of supercritical locally restricted sequential structures. This extends previous results about locally restricted integer compositions and part sizes in smooth supercritical compositional structures. Applications are given for runs of subcompositions. The problems are formulated as enumerating directed walks in sized infinite digraphs and the proofs depend heavily on earlier results by Bender and Canfield about infinite transfer matrices.

Identities for partial Bell polynomials derived from identities for weighted integer compositions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We discuss closed-form formulas for the (n; k)-th partial Bell polynomials derived in Cvijovic. We show that partial Bell polynomials are special cases of weighted integer compositions, and demonstrate how the identities for partial Bell polynomials easily follow from more general identities for weighted integer compositions. We also provide short and elegant probabilistic proofs of the latter, in terms of sums of discrete integer-valued random variables. Finally, we outline further identities for the partial Bell polynomials.

Enumeration and investigation of acute 0/1-simplices modulo the action of the hyperoctahedral group
Published • View PublicationBIB
The convex hull of n+1 affinely independent vertices of the unit n-cube Cn is called a 0/1-simplex. It is nonobtuse if none its dihedral angles is obtuse, and acute if additionally none of them is right. In terms of linear algebra, acute 0/1-simplices in Cn can be described by nonsingular 0/1-matrices P of size n x n whose Gramians have an inverse that is strictly diagonally dominant, with negative off-diagonal entries. The first part of this paper deals with giving a detailed description of how to efficiently compute, by means of a computer program, a representative from each orbit of an acute 0/1-simplex under the action of the hyperoctahedral group Bn of symmetries of Cn. A side product of the investigations is a simple code that computes the cycle index of Bn, which can in explicit form only be found in the literature for n < 7. Using the computed cycle indices in combination with Polya's theory of enumeration shows that acute 0/1-simplices are extremely rare among all 0/1-simplices. In the second part of the paper, we study the 0/1-matrices that represent the acute 0/1-simplices that were generated by our code from a mathematical perspective. One of the patterns observed in the data involves unreduced upper Hessenberg 0/1-matrices of size n x n, block-partitioned according to certain integer compositions of n. These patterns will be fully explained using a so-called One Neighbor Theorem. Additionally, we are able to prove that the volumes of the corresponding acute simplices are in one-to-one correspondence with the part of Kepler's Tree of Fractions that enumerates the rationals between 0 and 1. Another key ingredient in the proofs is the fact that the Gramians of the unreduced upper Hessenberg matrices involved are strictly ultrametric matrices.

Modelling x-ray tomography using integer compositions
The x-ray process is modelled using integer compositions as a two dimensional analogue of the object being x-rayed, where the examining rays are modelled by diagonal lines with equation $x-y=n$ for non negative integers $n$. This process is essentially parameterised by the degree to which the x-rays are contained inside a particular composition. So, characterising the process translates naturally to obtaining a generating function which tracks the number of "staircases" which are contained inside arbitrary integer compositions of $n$. More precisely, we obtain a generating function which counts the number of times the staircase $1^+2^+3^+\cdots m^+$ fits inside a particular composition. The main theorem establishes this generating function \begin{equation*} F= \dfrac {k_{m}-\frac {qx^{m}y}{1-x}k_{m-1}}{(1-q)x^{\binom {m+1}{2}}\left(\frac{y}{1-x}\right)^{m}+\frac{1-x-xy}{1-x}\left(k_{m}-\frac{qx^{m}y}{1-x}k_{m-1}\right)}. \end{equation*} where \begin{equation} k_{m}=\sum_{j=0}^{m-1}x^{mj-\binom {j}{2}}\left(\frac {y}{1-x}\right)^{j}. \end{equation} Here $x$ and $y$ respectively track the composition size and number of parts, whilst $q$ tracks the number of such staircases contained.

Some Elementary Congruences for the Number of Weighted Integer Compositions
An integer composition of a nonnegative integer $n$ is a tuple $(π_1,\ldots,π_k)$ of nonnegative integers whose sum is $n$; the $π_i$'s are called the parts of the composition. For fixed number $k$ of parts, the number of $f$-weighted integer compositions (also called $f$-colored integer compositions in the literature), in which each part size $s$ may occur in $f(s)$ different colors, is given by the extended binomial coefficient $\binom{k}{n}_{f}$. We derive several congruence properties for $\binom{k}{n}_{f}$, most of which are analogous to those for ordinary binomial coefficients. Among them is the parity of $\binom{k}{n}_{f}$, Babbage's congruence, Lucas' theorem, etc. We also give congruences for $c_{f}(n)$, the number of $f$-weighted integer compositions with arbitrarily many parts, and for extended binomial coefficient sums. We close with an application of our results to prime criteria for weighted integer compositions.
