Invariant measures via inverse limits of finite structures
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics 52 (2016) pp. 248-289 • View PublicationBIB
Building on recent results regarding symmetric probabilistic constructions of countable structures, we provide a method for constructing probability measures, concentrated on certain classes of countably infinite structures, that are invariant under all permutations of the underlying set that fix all constants. These measures are constructed from inverse limits of measures on certain finite structures. We use this construction to obtain invariant probability measures concentrated on the classes of countable models of certain first-order theories, including measures that do not assign positive measure to the isomorphism class of any single model. We also characterize those transitive Borel G-spaces admitting a G-invariant probability measure, when G is an arbitrary countable product of symmetric groups on a countable set.

Amenability and Unique Ergodicity of Automorphism Groups of Fraïssé Structures
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we provide a necessary and sufficient condition for the amenability of the automorphism group of Fraïssé structures and apply it to prove the non-amenability of the automorphism groups of the directed graph $\mathbf{S}(3)$ and the Boron tree structure $\mathbf{T}$. Also, we provide a negative answer to the Unique Ergodicity-Generic Point problem of Angel-Kechris-Lyons [AKL]. By considering $\mathrm{GL}(\mathbf{V}_\infty)$, where $\mathbf{V}_\infty$ is the countably infinite dimensional vector space over a finite field $F_q$, we show that the unique invariant measure on the universal minimal flow of $\mathrm{GL}(\mathbf{V}_\infty)$ is not supported on the generic orbit.
Scattering Amplitudes and the Positive Grassmannian
We establish a direct connection between scattering amplitudes in planar four-dimensional theories and a remarkable mathematical structure known as the positive Grassmannian. The central physical idea is to focus on on-shell diagrams as objects of fundamental importance to scattering amplitudes. We show that the all-loop integrand in N=4 SYM is naturally represented in this way. On-shell diagrams in this theory are intimately tied to a variety of mathematical objects, ranging from a new graphical representation of permutations to a beautiful stratification of the Grassmannian G(k,n) which generalizes the notion of a simplex in projective space. All physically important operations involving on-shell diagrams map to canonical operations on permutations; in particular, BCFW deformations correspond to adjacent transpositions. Each cell of the positive Grassmannian is naturally endowed with positive coordinates and an invariant measure which determines the on-shell function associated with the diagram. This understanding allows us to classify and compute all on-shell diagrams, and give a geometric understanding for all the non-trivial relations among them. Yangian invariance of scattering amplitudes is transparently represented by diffeomorphisms of G(k,n) which preserve the positive structure. Scattering amplitudes in (1+1)-dimensional integrable systems and the ABJM theory in (2+1) dimensions can both be understood as special cases of these ideas. On-shell diagrams in theories with less (or no) supersymmetry are associated with exactly the same structures in the Grassmannian, but with a measure deformed by a factor encoding ultraviolet singularities. The Grassmannian representation of on-shell processes also gives a new understanding of the all-loop integrand for scattering amplitudes, presenting all integrands in a novel dLog form which directly reflects the underlying positive structure.

Invariant measures concentrated on countable structures
Published in Forum of Mathematics Sigma 4 (2016), e17, 59 pp • View PublicationBIB
Let L be a countable language. We say that a countable infinite L-structure M admits an invariant measure when there is a probability measure on the space of L-structures with the same underlying set as M that is invariant under permutations of that set, and that assigns measure one to the isomorphism class of M. We show that M admits an invariant measure if and only if it has trivial definable closure, i.e., the pointwise stabilizer in Aut(M) of an arbitrary finite tuple of M fixes no additional points. When M is a Fraisse limit in a relational language, this amounts to requiring that the age of M have strong amalgamation. Our results give rise to new instances of structures that admit invariant measures and structures that do not.

Spectrum of Markov generators on sparse random graphs
Published in Communications on Pure and Applied Mathematics 67, 4 (2014) 621-669 • View PublicationBIB
We investigate the spectrum of the infinitesimal generator of the continuous time random walk on a randomly weighted oriented graph. This is the non-Hermitian random nxn matrix L defined by L(j,k)=X(j,k) if k<>j and L(j,j)=-sum(L(j,k),k<>j), where X(j,k) are i.i.d. random weights. Under mild assumptions on the law of the weights, we establish convergence as n tends to infinity of the empirical spectral distribution of L after centering and rescaling. In particular, our assumptions include sparse random graphs such as the oriented Erdös-Rényi graph where each edge is present independently with probability p(n)->0 as long as np(n) >> (log(n))^6. The limiting distribution is characterized as an additive Gaussian deformation of the standard circular law. In free probability terms, this coincides with the Brown measure of the free sum of the circular element and a normal operator with Gaussian spectral measure. The density of the limiting distribution is analyzed using a subordination formula. Furthermore, we study the convergence of the invariant measure of L to the uniform distribution and establish estimates on the extremal eigenvalues of L.

Inverting the Furstenberg correspondence
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a sequence of subsets A_n of {0,...,n-1}, the Furstenberg correspondence principle provides a shift-invariant measure on Cantor space that encodes combinatorial information about infinitely many of the A_n's. Here it is shown that this process can be inverted, so that for any such measure there are finite sets whose combinatorial properties approximate it arbitarily well. Moreover, we obtain an explicit upper bound on how large n has to be to obtain a sufficiently good approximation. As a consequence of the inversion theorem, we show that every computable invariant measure on Cantor space has a computable generic point. We also present a generalization of the correspondence principle and its inverse to countable discrete amenable groups.

On tight Euclidean $6$-designs: an experimental result
Published in ITB Journal of Science, Vol. 43 A, No. 1, 2011, 19-42 • View PublicationBIB
A finite set $X \seq \RR^n$ with a weight function $w : X \longrightarrow \RR_{>0}$ is called \emph{Euclidean $t$-design} in $\RR^n$ (supported by $p$ concentric spheres) if the following condition holds: \[ \sum_{i=1}^p \frac{w(X_i)}{|S_i|}\int_{S_i} f(\boldsymbol x)dσ_i(\boldsymbol x) =\sum_{\boldsymbol x \in X}w(\boldsymbol x) f(\boldsymbol x), \] for any polynomial $f(\boldsymbol x) \in \mbox{Pol}(\RR^n)$ of degree at most $t$. Here $S_i \seq \RR^n$ is a sphere of radius $r_i \geq 0,$ $X_i=X \cap S_i,$ and $σ_i(\boldsymbol x)$ is an $O(n)$-invariant measure on $S_i$ such that $|S_i|=r_i^{n-1}|S^{n-1}|$, with $|S_i|$ is the surface area of $S_i$ and $|S^{n-1}|$ is a surface area of the unit sphere in $\RR^n$. Recently, Bajnok (2006) constructed tight Euclidean $t$-designs in the plane ($n=2$) for arbitrary $t$ and $p.$ In this paper we show that for case $t=6$ and $p=2,$ tight Euclidean $6$-designs constructed by Bajnok is the unique configuration in $\RR^n$, for $2 \leq n \leq 8.$

A combinatorial analysis of interacting diffusions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider a particular class of n-dimensional homogeneous diffusions all of which have an identity diffusion matrix and a drift function that is piecewise constant and scale invariant. Abstract stochastic calculus immediately gives us general results about existence and uniqueness in law and invariant probability distributions when they exist. These invariant distributions are probability measures on the $n$-dimensional space and can be extremely resistant to a more detailed understanding. To have a better analysis, we construct a polyhedra such that the inward normal at its surface is given by the drift function and show that the finer structures of the invariant probability measure is intertwined with the geometry of the polyhedra. We show that several natural interacting Brownian particle models can thus be analyzed by studying the combinatorial fan generated by the drift function, particularly when these are simplicial. This is the case when the polyhedra is a polytope that is invariant under a Coxeter group action, which leads to an explicit description of the invariant measures in terms of iid Exponential random variables. Another class of examples is furnished by interactions indexed by weighted graphs all of which generate simplicial polytopes with $n !$ faces. We show that the proportion of volume contained in each component simplex corresponds to a probability distribution on the group of permutations, some of which have surprising connections with the classical urn models.

On the geometry of a class of invariant measures and a problem of Aldous
In his 1985 survey of notions of exchangeability, Aldous introduced a form of exchangeability corresponding to the symmetries of the infinite discrete cube, and asked whether these exchangeable probability measures enjoy a representation theorem similar to those for exchangeable sequences, arrays and set-indexed families. In this note we to prove that, whereas the known representation theorems for different classes of partially exchangeable probability measure imply that the compact convex set of such measures is a Bauer simplex (that is, its subset of extreme points is closed), in the case of cube-exchangeability it is a copy of the Poulsen simplex (in which the extreme points are dense). This follows from the arguments used by Glasner and Weiss' for their characterization of property (T) in terms of the geometry of the simplex of invariant measures for associated generalized Bernoulli actions. The emergence of this Poulsen simplex suggests that, if a representation theorem for these processes is available at all, it must take a very different form from the case of set-indexed exchangeable families.

Uncountable Graphs and Invariant Measures on the Set of Universal Countable Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give new examples and describe the complete lists of all measures on the set of countable homogeneous universal graphs and $K_s$-free homogeneous universal graphs (for $s\geq 3$) that are invariant with respect to the group of all permutations of the vertices. Such measures can be regarded as random graphs (respectively, random $K_s$-free graphs). The well-known example of Erdös--Rényi (ER) of the random graph corresponds to the Bernoulli measure on the set of adjacency matrices. For the case of the universal $K_s$-free graphs there were no previously known examples of the invariant measures on the space of such graphs. The main idea of our construction is based on the new notions of {\it measurable universal}, and {\it topologically universal} graphs, which are interesting themselves. The realization of the construction can be regarded as two-step randomization for universal measurable graph : {\it "randomization in vertices"} and {\it "randomization in edges"}. For $K_s$-free, $s\geq 3$ there is only randomization in vertices of the measurable graphs. The completeness of our lists is proved using the important theorem by D. Aldous about $S_{\infty}$-invariant matrices, which we reformulate in appropriate way.

Uniqueness of maximal entropy measure on essential spanning forests
Published in Annals of Probability 2006, Vol. 34, No. 3, 857-864 • View PublicationBIB
An essential spanning forest of an infinite graph $G$ is a spanning forest of $G$ in which all trees have infinitely many vertices. Let $G_n$ be an increasing sequence of finite connected subgraphs of $G$ for which $\bigcup G_n=G$. Pemantle's arguments imply that the uniform measures on spanning trees of $G_n$ converge weakly to an $\operatorname {Aut}(G)$-invariant measure $μ_G$ on essential spanning forests of $G$. We show that if $G$ is a connected, amenable graph and $Γ\subset \operatorname {Aut}(G)$ acts quasitransitively on $G$, then $μ_G$ is the unique $Γ$-invariant measure on essential spanning forests of $G$ for which the specific entropy is maximal. This result originated with Burton and Pemantle, who gave a short but incorrect proof in the case $Γ\cong\mathbb{Z}^d$. Lyons discovered the error and asked about the more general statement that we prove.

Harmonic analysis on the infinite-dimensional unitary group and determinantal point processes
Published in Ann. of Math. 161 (2005), no. 3, 1319--1422 • View PublicationBIB
The infinite-dimensional unitary group U(infinity) is the inductive limit of growing compact unitary groups U(N). In this paper we solve a problem of harmonic analysis on U(infinity) stated in the previous paper math/0109193. The problem consists in computing spectral decomposition for a remarkable 4-parameter family of characters of U(infinity). These characters generate representations which should be viewed as analogs of nonexisting regular representation of U(infinity). The spectral decomposition of a character of U(infinity) is described by the spectral measure which lives on an infinite-dimensional space Omega of indecomposable characters. The key idea which allows us to solve the problem is to embed Omega into the space of point configurations on the real line without 2 points. This turns the spectral measure into a stochastic point process on the real line. The main result of the paper is a complete description of the processes corresponding to our concrete family of characters. We prove that each of the processes is a determinantal point process. That is, its correlation functions have determinantal form with a certain kernel. Our kernels have a special `integrable' form and are expressed through the Gauss hypergeometric function. In simpler situations of harmonic analysis on infinite symmetric group and harmonic analysis of unitarily invariant measures on infinite hermitian matrices similar results were obtained in our papers math/9810015, math/9904010, math-ph/0010015.
