Introduction to Khovanov Homologies. III. A new and simple tensor-algebra construction of Khovanov-Rozansky invariants
Published in Nuclear Physics B878 (2014) 12-81 • View PublicationBIB
We continue to develop the tensor-algebra approach to knot polynomials with the goal to present the story in elementary and comprehensible form. The previously reviewed description of Khovanov cohomologies for the gauge group of rank N-1=1 was based on the cut-and-join calculus of the planar cycles, which are involved rather artificially. We substitute them by alternative and natural set of cycles, not obligatory planar. Then the whole construction is straightforwardly lifted from SL(2) to SL(N) and reproduces Khovanov-Rozansky (KR) polynomials, simultaneously for all values of N. No matrix factorization and related tedious calculations are needed in such approach, which can therefore become not only conceptually, but also practically useful.

The transition matroid of a 4-regular graph: an introduction
Published in European J. Combinatorics 50 (2015), 180-207 • View PublicationBIB
Given a 4-regular graph $F$, we introduce a binary matroid $M_τ(F)$ on the set of transitions of $F$. Parametrized versions of the Tutte polynomial of $M_τ(F)$ yield several well-known graph and knot polynomials, including the Martin polynomial, the homflypt polynomial, the Kauffman polynomial and the Bollobás-Riordan polynomial.

Basic nets in the projective plane
Published in Annales de la Faculté des sciences de Toulouse : Mathématiques (6), 24 (2015), 205-226 • View PublicationBIB
The notion of basic net (called also basic polyhedron) on $S^2$ plays a central role in Conway's approach to enumeration of knots and links in $S^3$. Drobotukhina applied this approach for links in $RP^3$ using basic nets on $RP^2$. By a result of Nakamoto, all basic nets on $S^2$ can be obtained from a very explicit family of minimal basic nets (the nets $(2\times n)^*$, $n\ge3$, in Conway's notation) by two local transformations. We prove a similar result for basic nets in $RP^2$. We prove also that a graph on $RP^2$ is uniquely determined by its pull-back on $S^3$ (the proof is based on Lefschetz fix point theorem).

Refined knot invariants and Hilbert schemes
Published in Journal de mathématiques pures et appliquées 104 (2015), pp. 403-435 • View PublicationBIB
We consider the construction of refined Chern-Simons torus knot invariants by M. Aganagic and S. Shakirov from the DAHA viewpoint of I. Cherednik. We give a proof of Cherednik's conjecture on the stabilization of superpolynomials, and then use the results of O. Schiffmann and E. Vasserot to relate knot invariants to the Hilbert scheme of points on the plane. Then we use the methods of the second author to compute these invariants explicitly in the uncolored case. We also propose a conjecture relating these constructions to the rational Cherednik algebra, as in the work of the first author, A. Oblomkov, J. Rasmussen and V. Shende. Among the combinatorial consequences of this work is a statement of the m/n shuffle conjecture.

Alternating knots, planar graphs and q-series
Published • View PublicationBIB
Recent advances in Quantum Topology assign $q$-series to knots in at least three different ways. The $q$-series are given by generalized Nahm sums (i.e., special $q$-hypergeometric sums) and have unknown modular and asymptotic properties. We give an efficient method to compute those $q$-series that come from planar graphs (i.e., reduced Tait graphs of alternating links) and compute several terms of those series for all graphs with at most 8 edges drawing several conclusions. In addition, we give a graph-theory proof of a theorem of Dasbach-Lin which identifies the coefficient of $q^k$ in those series for $k=0,1,2$ in terms of polynomials on the number of vertices, edges and triangles of the graph. Updated tables of data.
Abstract loop equations, topological recursion, and applications
Published in Communications in Number Theory and Physics, Volume 9 (2015) Number 1 • View PublicationBIB
We formulate a notion of abstract loop equations, and show that their solution is provided by a topological recursion under some assumptions, in particular the result takes a universal form. The Schwinger-Dyson equation of the one and two hermitian matrix models, and of the O(n) model appear as special cases. We study applications to repulsive particles systems, and explain how our notion of loop equations are related to Virasoro constraints. Then, as a special case, we study in detail applications to enumeration problems in a general class of non-intersecting loop models on the random lattice of all topologies, to SU(N) Chern-Simons invariants of torus knots in the large N expansion. We also mention an application to Liouville theory on surfaces of positive genus.

Knots in collapsible and non-collapsible balls
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 20 (2013), No.3, Paper P31, 29 pages • View PublicationBIB
We construct the first explicit example of a simplicial 3-ball B_{15,66} that is not collapsible. It has only 15 vertices. We exhibit a second 3-ball B_{12,38} with 12 vertices that is collapsible and evasive, but not shellable. Finally, we present the first explicit triangulation of a 3-sphere S_{18, 125} (with only 18 vertices) that is not locally constructible. All these examples are based on knotted subcomplexes with only three edges; the knots are the trefoil, the double trefoil, and the triple trefoil, respectively. The more complicated the knot is, the more distant the triangulation is from being polytopal, collapsible, etc. Further consequences of our work are: (1) Unshellable 3-spheres may have vertex-decomposable barycentric subdivisions. (This shows the strictness of an implication proven by Billera and Provan.) (2) For d-balls, vertex-decomposable implies non-evasive implies collapsible, and for d=3 all implications are strict. (This answers a question by Barmak.) (3) Locally constructible 3-balls may contain a double trefoil knot as a 3-edge subcomplex. (This improves a result of Benedetti and Ziegler.) (4) Rudin's ball is non-evasive.

Triangles, Rotation, a Theorem and the Jackpot
This is an expository paper designed to introduce undergraduates to the Atiyah-Singer index theorem 50 years after its announcement. It includes motivation, a statement of the theorem, an outline of the easy part of the heat equation proof. It includes counting lattice points and knot concordance as applications.

The Bubble Skein Element and Applications
Published in Journal of Knot Theory and Its Ramifications, Volume 23, Issue 14, December 2014 • View PublicationBIB
We study a certain skein element in the relative Kauffman bracket skein module of the disk with some marked points, and expand this element in terms linearly independent elements of this module. This expansion is used to compute and study the head and the tail of the colored Jones polynomial and in particular we give a simple $q-$series for the tail of the knot $8_5$. Furthermore, we use this expansion to obtain an easy determination of the theta coefficients.

Irreducibility of q-difference operators and the knot 7_4
Published in Algebr. Geom. Topol. 13 (2013) 3261-3286 • View PublicationBIB
Our goal is to compute the minimal-order recurrence of the colored Jones polynomial of the 7_4 knot, as well as for the first four double twist knots. As a corollary, we verify the AJ Conjecture for the simplest knot 7_4 with reducible non-abelian SL(2,C) character variety. To achieve our goal, we use symbolic summation techniques of Zeilberger's holonomic systems approach and an irreducibility criterion for q-difference operators. For the latter we use an improved version of the qHyper algorithm of Abramov-Paule-Petkovsek to show that a given q-difference operator has no linear right factors. En route, we introduce exterior power Adams operations on the ring of bivariate polynomials and on the corresponding affine curves.

A correspondence between complexes and knots
In recent work the author investigates perfect matchings of a bipartite graph obtained from a knot diagram and demonstrates that these correspond to discrete Morse functions on a 2-complex for the 2-sphere. This relationship is expounded below for the opposite audience: those who may be unfamiliar with knots.

Kauffman's clock lattice as a graph of perfect matchings: a formula for its height
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 21 (2014), no. 4, #P4.31 • View PublicationBIB
We give an algorithmic computation for the height of Kauffman's clock lattice obtained from a knot diagram with two adjacent regions starred and without crossing information specified. We show that this lattice is more familiarly the graph of perfect matchings of a bipartite graph obtained from the knot diagram by overlaying the two dual Tait graphs of the knot diagram. This setting also makes evident applications to Chebyshev or harmonic knots, whose related bipartite graph is the popular grid graph, and to discrete Morse functions. Furthermore we prove structural properties of the bipartite graph in general.

Crowell's state space is connected
We study the set of Crowell states for alternating knot projections and show that for prime alternating knots the space of states for a reduced projection is connected, a result similar to that for Kauffman states. As an application we give a new proof of a result of Ozsvath and Szabo characterizing (2,2n+1) torus knots among alternating knots.

A generalization of Vassiliev's planarity criterion
Motivated by his studies in knot theory V. Vassiliev introduced $X$-graphs as regular 4-valent graph with a structure of pairs of opposite edges at each vertex. He conjectured the conditions under which $X$-graph can be embedded into a plane respecting the the $X$-structure at every vertex. The conjecture was proved by V.Manturov. Here we generalize these results for graphs with vertices of valency 4 or 6, *-graphs. A problem of such generalization was posted by A.Skopenkov.

A subtle new invariant for framed knots and links
We produce a facial state sum on plane diagrams of a knot or a link which admits an invariant specialization under Polyak's recent set of generating of 4 Reidemeister moves. Thus an isotopy invariant of framed links is obtained. Each state is a complete coloring of the faces of the diagram into white and black faces so that no two black faces share an edge. Each state induces a monomial in a ring of 16 variables. The sum of the states, properly specialized defines the new invariant. In despite of its simplicity it complements Jones invariant in distinguishing mirror pairs of links. In particular it proves that $9_{42}$ is distinct from its mirror image. For this pair of knots both the Jones Polynomial and Kauffman 2-variable polynomial fail.

Relative Tutte polynomials of tensor products of colored graphs
Published in Combin. Probab. Comput. 22 (2013), no. 6, 801-828 • View PublicationBIB
The tensor product $(G_1,G_2)$ of a graph $G_1$ and a pointed graph $G_2$ (containing one distinguished edge) is obtained by identifying each edge of $G_1$ with the distinguished edge of a separate copy of $G_2$, and then removing the identified edges. A formula to compute the Tutte polynomial of a tensor product of graphs was originally given by Brylawski. This formula was recently generalized to colored graphs and the generalized Tutte polynomial introduced by Bollobás and Riordan. In this paper we generalize the colored tensor product formula to relative Tutte polynomials of relative graphs, containing zero edges to which the usual deletion-contraction rules do not apply. As we have shown in a recent paper, relative Tutte polynomials may be used to compute the Jones polynomial of a virtual knot.

Twisting q-holonomic sequences by complex roots of unity
Published • View PublicationBIB
A sequence $f_n(q)$ is $q$-holonomic if it satisfies a nontrivial linear recurrence with coefficients polynomials in $q$ and $q^n$. Our main theorems state that $q$-holonomicity is preserved under twisting, i.e., replacing $q$ by $ωq$ where $ω$ is a complex root of unity, and under the substitution $q \to q^α$ where $α$ is a rational number. Our proofs are constructive, work in the multivariate setting of $\partial$-finite sequences and are implemented in the Mathematica package HolonomicFunctions. Our results are illustrated by twisting natural $q$-holonomic sequences which appear in quantum topology, namely the colored Jones polynomial of pretzel knots and twist knots. The recurrence of the twisted colored Jones polynomial can be used to compute the asymptotics of the Kashaev invariant of a knot at an arbitrary complex root of unity.
Kontsevich integral for knots and Vassiliev invariants
Published in Int. J. Mod. Phys. A 28, 1330025 (2013) • View PublicationBIB
We review quantum field theory approach to the knot theory. Using holomorphic gauge we obtain the Kontsevich integral. It is explained how to calculate Vassiliev invariants and coefficients in Kontsevich integral in a combinatorial way which can be programmed on a computer. We discuss experimental results and temporal gauge considerations which lead to representation of Vassiliev invariants in terms of arrow diagrams. Explicit examples and computational results are presented.

On a move reducing the genus of a knot diagram
Published in Indiana University Mathematics Journal, Volume 61, issue 3 (2012), 1111-1127 • View PublicationBIB
For a knot diagram we introduce an operation which does not increase the genus of the diagram and does not change its representing knot type. We also describe a condition for this operation to certainly decrease the genus. The proof involves the study of a relation between the genus of a virtual knot diagram and the genus of a knotoid diagram, the former of which has been introduced by Stoimenow, Tchernov and Vdovina, and the latter by Turaev recently. Our operation has a simple interpretation in terms of Gauss codes and hence can easily be computer-implemented.

Galkin Quandles, Pointed Abelian Groups, and Sequence $A000712$
Published • View PublicationBIB
For each pointed abelian group $(A,c)$, there is an associated {\em Galkin quandle} $G(A,c)$ which is an algebraic structure defined on $\Bbb Z_3\times A$ that can be used to construct knot invariants. It is known that two finite Galkin quandles are isomorphic if and only if their associated pointed abelian groups are isomorphic. In this paper we classify all finite pointed abelian groups. We show that the number of nonisomorphic pointed abelian groups of order $q^n$ ($q$ prime) is $\sum_{0\le m\le n}p(m)p(n-m)$, where $p(m)$ is the number of partitions of integer $m$.
