The partition algebra and the Kronecker coefficients
Published • View PublicationBIB
We propose a new approach to study the Kronecker coefficients by using the Schur-Weyl duality between the symmetric group and the partition algebra. We explain the limiting behavior and associated bounds in the context of the partition algebra. Our analysis leads to a uniform description of the Kronecker coefficients when one of the indexing partitions is a hook or a two-part partition.

Kronecker coefficients for one hook shape
We give a positive combinatorial formula for the Kronecker coefficient g_{lambda mu(d) nu} for any partitions lambda, nu of n and hook shape mu(d) := (n-d,1^d). Our main tool is Haiman's \emph{mixed insertion}. This is a generalization of Schensted insertion to \emph{colored words}, words in the alphabet of barred letters \bar{1},\bar{2},... and unbarred letters 1,2,.... We define the set of \emph{colored Yamanouchi tableaux of content lambda and total color d} (CYT_{lambda, d}) to be the set of mixed insertion tableaux of colored words w with exactly d barred letters and such that w^{blft} is a Yamanouchi word of content lambda, where w^{blft} is the ordinary word formed from w by shuffling its barred letters to the left and then removing their bars. We prove that g_{lambda mu(d) nu} is equal to the number of CYT_{lambda, d} of shape nu with unbarred southwest corner.

Kronecker products and the RSK correspondence
Published in Discrete Mathematics 312 (2012) 1476-1486 • View PublicationBIB
The starting point for this work is an identity that relates the number of minimal matrices with prescribed 1-marginals and coefficient sequence to a linear combination of Kronecker coefficients. In this paper we provide a bijection that realizes combinatorially this identity. As a consequence we obtain an algorithm that to each minimal matrix associates a minimal component, with respect to the dominance order, in a Kronecker product, and a combinatorial description of the corresponding Kronecker coefficient in terms of minimal matrices and tableau insertion. Our bijection follows from a generalization of the dual RSK correspondence to 3-dimensional binary matrices, which we state and prove. With the same tools we also obtain a generalization of the RSK correspondence to 3-dimensional integer matrices.

Reduced Kronecker products which are multiplicity free or contain only few components
Published in European J. Combin. 31 (2010), pp. 1996-2005 • View PublicationBIB
It is known that the Kronecker coefficient of three partitions is a bounded and weakly increasing sequence if one increases the first part of all three partitions. Furthermore if the first parts of partitions λ,μare big enough then the coefficients of the Kronecker product [λ][μ]=\sum_\n g(ł,\m,\n)[ν] do not depend on the first part but only on the other parts. The reduced Kronecker product [λ]_\bullet \star[μ]_\bullet can be viewed (roughly) as the Kronecker product [(n-|λ|,λ)][(n-|μ|,\m)] for n big enough. In this paper we classify the reduced Kronecker products which are multiplicity free and those which contain less than 10 components. We furthermore give general lower bounds for the number of constituents and components of a given reduced Kronecker product. We also give a lower bound for the number of pairs of components whose corresponding partitions differ by one box. Finally we argue that equality of two reduced Kronecker products is only possible in the trivial case that the factors of the product are the same.

The stability of the Kronecker products of Schur functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
In the late 1930's Murnaghan discovered the existence of a stabilization phenomenon for the Kronecker product of Schur functions. For n sufficiently large, the values of the Kronecker coefficients appearing in the product of two Schur functions of degree n do not depend on the first part of the indexing partitions, but only on the values of their remaining parts. We compute the exact value of n for which all the coefficients of a Kronecker product of Schur functions stabilize. We also compute two new bounds for the stabilization of a sequence of coefficients and show that they improve existing bounds of M. Brion and E. Vallejo.

A stability property for coefficients in Kronecker products of complex S_n characters

In this note we make explicit a stability property for Kronecker coefficients that is implicit in a theorem of Y. Dvir. Even in the simplest nontrivial case this property was overlooked despite of the work of several authors. As an application we give a new formula for some Kronecker coefficients.

Quasipolynomial formulas for the Kronecker coefficients indexed by two two-row shapes (extended abstract)
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that the Kronecker coefficients (the Clebsch-Gordan coefficients of the symmetric group) indexed by two two-row shapes are given by quadratic quasipolynomial formulas whose domains are the maximal cells of a fan. Simple calculations provide explicitly the quasipolynomial formulas and a description of the associated fan. These new formulas are obtained from analogous formulas for the corresponding reduced Kronecker coefficients and a formula recovering the Kronecker coefficients from the reduced Kronecker coefficients. As an application, we characterize all the Kronecker coefficients indexed by two two-row shapes that are equal to zero. This allowed us to disprove a conjecture of Mulmuley about the behavior of the stretching functions attached to the Kronecker coefficients.

Reduced Kronecker coefficients and counter-examples to Mulmuley's strong saturation conjecture SH
Published in Computational Complexity, vol. 18(4) pp. 577-600 (2009) • View PublicationBIB
We provide counter-examples to Mulmuley's strong saturation conjecture (strong SH) for the Kronecker coefficients. This conjecture was proposed in the setting of Geometric Complexity Theory to show that deciding whether or not a Kronecker coefficient is zero can be done in polynomial time. We also provide a short proof of the #P-hardness of computing the Kronecker coefficients. Both results rely on the connections between the Kronecker coefficients and another family of structural constants in the representation theory of the symmetric groups: Murnaghan's reduced Kronecker coefficients. An appendix by Mulmuley introduces a relaxed form of the saturation hypothesis SH, still strong enough for the aims of Geometric Complexity Theory.

We give some elementary manifestly positive formulae for the Kronecker products s_(d,d) * s_(d+k,d-k) and s_(d,d) * s_(2d-k,1^k). These formulae demonstrate some fundamental properties of the Kronecker coefficients, and we use them to deduce a number of enumerative and combinatorial results.

The Kronecker product of Schur functions indexed by two-row shapes or hook shapes
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Kronecker product of two Schur functions $s_μ$ and $s_ν$, denoted by $s_μ*s_ν$, is the Frobenius characteristic of the tensor product of the irreducible representations of the symmetric group corresponding to the partitions $μ$ and $ν$. The coefficient of $s_λ$ in this product is denoted by $γ^λ_{μν}$, and corresponds to the multiplicity of the irreducible character $χ^λ$ in $χ^μχ^ν.$ We use Sergeev's Formula for a Schur function of a difference of two alphabets and the comultiplication expansion for $s_λ[XY]$ to find closed formulas for the Kronecker coefficients $γ^λ_{μν}$ when $λ$ is an arbitrary shape and $μ$ and $ν$ are hook shapes or two-row shapes. Remmel \cite{Re1, Re2} and Remmel and Whitehead \cite{Re-Wh} derived some closed formulas for the Kronecker product of Schur functions indexed by two-row shapes or hook shapes using a different approach. We believe that the approach of this paper is more natural. The formulas obtained are simpler and reflect the symmetry of the Kronecker product.
