The lattice permutation condition for Kronecker tableaux (Extended Abstract)
We recently generalised the lattice permutation condition for Young tableaux to Kronecker tableaux and hence calculated a large new class of stable Kronecker coefficients labelled by co-Pieri triples. In this extended abstract we discuss important families of co-Pieri triples for which our combinatorics simplifies drastically.

Vector partition functions and Kronecker coefficients
Published in J. Phys. A: Mathematical and Theoretical, Volume 54, Number 20 (2021) • View PublicationBIB
The Kronecker coefficients are the structure constants for the restriction of irreducible representations of the general linear group $GL(n m)$ into irreducibles for the subgroup $GL(n)\times GL(m)$. In this work we study the quasipolynomial nature of the Kronecker function using elementary tools from polyhedral geometry. We write the Kronecker function in terms of coefficients of a vector partition function. This allows us to define a new family of coefficients, the atomic Kronecker coefficients. Our derivation is explicit and self-contained, and gives a new exact formula and an upper bound for the Kronecker coefficients in the first nontrivial case.

Generalized Stability of Heisenberg Coefficients
Published • View PublicationBIB
Stembridge introduced the notion of stability for Kronecker triples which generalize Murnaghan's classical stability result for Kronecker coefficients. Sam and Snowden proved a conjecture of Stembridge concerning stable Kronecker triple, and they also showed an analogous result for Littlewood--Richardson coefficients. Heisenberg coefficients are Schur structure constants of the Heisenberg product which generalize both Littlewood--Richardson coefficients and Kronecker coefficients. We show that any stable triple for Kronecker coefficients or Littlewood--Richardson coefficients also stabilizes Heisenberg coefficients, and we classify the triples stabilizing Heisenberg coefficients. We also follow Vallejo's idea of using matrix additivity to generate Heisenberg stable triples.

Specht modules decompose as alternating sums of restrictions of Schur modules
Published • View PublicationBIB
Schur modules give the irreducible polynomial representations of the general linear group $\mathrm{GL}_t$. Viewing the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_t$ as a subgroup of $\mathrm{GL}_t$, we may restrict Schur modules to $\mathfrak{S}_t$ and decompose the result into a direct sum of Specht modules, the irreducible representations of $\mathfrak{S}_t$. We give an equivariant Möbius inversion formula that we use to invert this expansion in the representation ring for $\mathfrak{S}_t$ for $t$ large. In addition to explicit formulas in terms of plethysms, we show the coefficients that appear alternate in sign by degree. In particular, this allows us to define a new basis of symmetric functions whose structure constants are stable Kronecker coefficients and which expand with alternating signs into the Schur basis.

The partition algebra and the plethysm coefficients I: stability and Foulkes' conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
We propose a new approach to study plethysm coefficients by using the Schur-Weyl duality between the symmetric group and the partition algebra. This allows us to explain the stability properties of plethysm and Kronecker coefficients in a simple and uniform fashion for the first time. We prove the strengthened Foulkes' conjecture for stable plethysm coefficients in an elementary fashion.

Cluster Algebras, Invariant Theory, and Kronecker Coefficients II
Published in Adv. Math. 341 (2019), 536-582 • View PublicationBIB
We prove that the semi-invariant ring of the standard representation space of the $l$-flagged $m$-arrow Kronecker quiver is an upper cluster algebra for any $l,m\in \mathbb{N}$. The quiver and cluster are explicitly given. We prove that the quiver with its rigid potential is a polyhedral cluster model. As a consequence, to compute each Kronecker coefficient $g_{μ,ν}^λ$ with $λ$ at most $m$ parts, we only need to count lattice points in at most $m!$ fibre (rational) polytopes inside the ${\rm g}$-vector cone, which is explicitly given.

The co-Pieri rule for Kronecker coefficients
Published • View PublicationBIB
A fundamental problem in the representation theory of the symmetric group, Sn, is to describe the coefficients in the decomposition of a tensor product of two simple representations. These coefficients are known in the literature as the Kronecker coefficients. The Littlewood--Richardson coefficients appear as an important subfamily of the wider class of stable Kronecker coefficients. This subfamily of coefficients can be calculated using a tableaux counting algorithm known as the Littlewood--Richardson rule. This paper generalises one half of this rule (the "co-Pieri" rule) to the the wider family of stable Kronecker coefficients.

Products of characters of the symmetric group
Published • View PublicationBIB
In a recent paper, the authors introduced a new basis of the ring of symmetric functions which evaluate to the irreducible characters of the symmetric group at roots of unity. The structure coefficients for this new basis are the stable Kronecker coefficients. In this paper we give combinatorial descriptions for several products that have as consequences several versions of the Pieri rule for this new basis of symmetric functions. In addition, we give several applications of the products studied in this paper.

Tensor Models, Kronecker coefficients and Permutation Centralizer Algebras
Published in JHEP 11 (2017) 092 • View PublicationBIB
We show that the counting of observables and correlators for a 3-index tensor model are organized by the structure of a family of permutation centralizer algebras. These algebras are shown to be semi-simple and their Wedderburn-Artin decompositions into matrix blocks are given in terms of Clebsch-Gordan coefficients of symmetric groups. The matrix basis for the algebras also gives an orthogonal basis for the tensor observables which diagonalizes the Gaussian two-point functions. The centres of the algebras are associated with correlators which are expressible in terms of Kronecker coefficients (Clebsch-Gordan multiplicities of symmetric groups). The color-exchange symmetry present in the Gaussian model, as well as a large class of interacting models, is used to refine the description of the permutation centralizer algebras. This discussion is extended to a general number of colors $d$: it is used to prove the integrality of an infinite family of number sequences related to color-symmetrizations of colored graphs, and expressible in terms of symmetric group representation theory data. Generalizing a connection between matrix models and Belyi maps, correlators in Gaussian tensor models are interpreted in terms of covers of singular 2-complexes. There is an intriguing difference, between matrix and higher rank tensor models, in the computational complexity of superficially comparable correlators of observables parametrized by Young diagrams.

Symmetric group representations and Z
Published in C. R. Math. Acad. Sci. Paris 356 (2018), No. 1, 1-4 • View PublicationBIB
We discuss implications of the following statement about the representation theory of symmetric groups: every integer appears infinitely often as an irreducible character evaluation, and every nonnegative integer appears infinitely often as a Littlewood-Richardson coefficient and as a Kronecker coefficient.
Specht Polytopes and Specht Matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
The generators of the classical Specht module satisfy intricate relations. We introduce the Specht matroid, which keeps track of these relations, and the Specht polytope, which also keeps track of convexity relations. We establish basic facts about the Specht polytope, for example, that the symmetric group acts transitively on its vertices and irreducibly on its ambient real vector space. A similar construction builds a matroid and polytope for a tensor product of Specht modules, giving "Kronecker matroids" and "Kronecker polytopes" instead of the usual Kronecker coefficients. We dub this process of upgrading numbers to matroids and polytopes "matroidification," giving two more examples. In the course of describing these objects, we also give an elementary account of the construction of Specht modules different from the standard one. Finally, we provide code to compute with Specht matroids and their Chow rings.

Simple modules for the partition algebra and monotone convergence of Kronecker coefficients
Published • View PublicationBIB
We construct bases of the simple modules for partition algebras which are indexed by paths in an alcove geometry. This allows us to give a concrete interpretation (and new proof) of the monotone convergence property for Kronecker coefficients using stratifications of the cell modules of the partition algebra.

Symmetric group characters as symmetric functions
Published in Adv. Math. 390 (2021), Paper No. 107943 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a basis of the symmetric functions that evaluates to the (irreducible) characters of the symmetric group, just as the Schur functions evaluate to the irreducible characters of $GL_n$ modules. Our main result gives three different characterizations for this basis. One of the characterizations shows that the structure coefficients for the (outer) product of these functions are the stable Kronecker coefficients. The results in this paper focus on developing the fundamental properties of this basis.

Combinatorics on several families of Kronecker coefficients related to plane partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present a study of three families of Kronecker coefficients, which we describe in terms of reduced Kronecker coefficients. This study is grounded on the generating function of the coefficients, proved by a bijection between two combinatorial objects. This study includes the connection between plane partitions and these three families of reduced Kronecker coefficients, providing us their combinatorial interpretation. As an application, we verify that the saturation hypothesis holds for our three families of reduced Kronecker coefficients. The study also includes other interpretation in terms of the quasipolynomials that govern these families. We specify the degree and the period of these quasipolynomials. Finally, the direct relation between Kronecker coefficients and reduced Kronecker coefficients allows us to give some observations about the rate of growth of the Kronecker coefficients associated to the reduced Kronecker coefficients of the study.

Rectangular Kronecker coefficients and plethysms in geometric complexity theory
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that in the geometric complexity theory program the vanishing of rectangular Kronecker coefficients cannot be used to prove superpolynomial determinantal complexity lower bounds for the permanent polynomial. Moreover, we prove the positivity of rectangular Kronecker coefficients for a large class of partitions where the side lengths of the rectangle are at least quadratic in the length of the partition. We also compare rectangular Kronecker coefficients with their corresponding plethysm coefficients, which leads to a new lower bound for rectangular Kronecker coefficients. Moreover, we prove that the saturation of the rectangular Kronecker semigroup is trivial, we show that the rectangular Kronecker positivity stretching factor is 2 for a long first row, and we completely classify the positivity of rectangular limit Kronecker coefficients that were introduced by Manivel in 2011.

Kronecker coefficients and noncommutative super Schur functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
The theory of noncommutative Schur functions can be used to obtain positive combinatorial formulae for the Schur expansion of various classes of symmetric functions, as shown by Fomin and Greene. We develop a theory of noncommutative super Schur functions and use it to prove a positive combinatorial rule for the Kronecker coefficients where one of the partitions is a hook, recovering previous results of the two authors. This method also gives a precise connection between this rule and a heuristic for Kronecker coefficients first investigated by Lascoux.

Symmetric group characters as symmetric functions (extended abstract)
The irreducible characters of the symmetric group are a symmetric polynomial in the eigenvalues of a permutation matrix. They can therefore be realized as a symmetric function that can be evaluated at a set of variables and form a basis of the symmetric functions. This basis of the symmetric functions is of non-homogeneous degree and the (outer) product structure coefficients are the stable Kronecker coefficients. We introduce the irreducible character basis by defining it in terms of the induced trivial characters of the symmetric group which also form a basis of the symmetric functions. The irreducible character basis is closely related to character polynomials and we obtain some of the change of basis coefficients by making this connection explicit. Other change of basis coefficients come from a representation theoretic connection with the partition algebra, and still others are derived by developing combinatorial expressions. This document is an extended abstract which can be used as a review reference so that this basis can be implemented in Sage. A more complete version of the results in this abstract can be found in {\tt arXiv:1605.06672}.

Obstructions to combinatorial formulas for plethysm
Published • View PublicationBIB
Motivated by questions of Mulmuley and Stanley we investigate quasi-polynomials arising in formulas for plethysm. We demonstrate, on the examples of $S^3(S^k)$ and $S^k(S^3)$, that these need not be counting functions of inhomogeneous polytopes of dimension equal to the degree of the quasi-polynomial. It follows that these functions are not, in general, counting functions of lattice points in any scaled convex bodies, even when restricted to single rays. Our results also apply to special rectangular Kronecker coefficients.

Combinatorics on a family of reduced Kronecker coefficients
Published • View PublicationBIB
The reduced Kronecker coefficients are particular instances of Kronecker coefficients that contain enough information to recover them. In this notes we compute the generating function of a family of reduced Kronecker coefficients. We also gives its connection to the plane partitions, which allows us to check that this family satisfies the saturation conjecture for reduced Kronecker coefficients, and that they are weakly increasing. Thanks to its generating function we can describe our family by a quasipolynomial, specifying its degree and period.

Multiplicity of compact group representations and applications to Kronecker coefficients
These notes are an expanded version of a talk given by the second author. Our main interest is focused on the challenging problem of computing Kronecker coefficients. We decided, at the beginning, to take a very general approach to the problem of studying multiplicity functions, and we survey the various aspects of the theory that comes into play, giving a detailed bibliography to orient the reader. Nonetheless the main general theorems involving multiplicities functions (convexity, quasi-polynomial behavior, Jeffrey-Kirwan residues) are stated without proofs. Then, we present in detail our approach to the computational problem, giving explicit formulae, and outlining an algorithm that calculate many interesting examples, some of which appear in the literature also in connection with Hilbert series.
