Computing Minimal Doubly Resolving Sets and the Strong Metric Dimension of the Layer Sun Graph and the Line Graph of Layer Sun Graph
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a finite, connected graph of order of at least 2, with vertex set $V(G)$ and edge set $E (G)$. A set $S$ of vertices of the graph $G$ is a doubly resolving set for $G$ if every two distinct vertices of $G$ are doubly resolved by some two vertices of $S$. The minimal doubly resolving set of vertices of graph $G$ is a doubly resolving set with minimum cardinality and is denoted by $ψ(G)$. In this paper, first, we construct a class of graphs of order $2n+ Σ_{r=1}^{k-2}nm^{r}$, denoted by $LSG(n,m, k)$, and call these graphs as the layer Sun graphs with parameters $n$, $m$ and $k$. Moreover, we compute minimal doubly resolving sets and the strong metric dimension of layer Sun graph $LSG(n,m, k)$ and the line graph of the layer Sun graph $LSG(n,m, k)$.

Gap Sets for the Spectra of Cubic Graphs
We study gaps in the spectra of the adjacency matrices of large finite cubic graphs. It is known that the gap intervals $(2 \sqrt{2},3)$ and $[-3,-2)$ achieved in cubic Ramanujan graphs and line graphs are maximal. We give constraints on spectra in [-3,3] which are maximally gapped and construct examples which achieve these bounds. These graphs yield new instances of maximally gapped intervals. We also show that every point in $[-3,3)$ can be gapped by cubic graphs, even by planar ones. Our results show that the study of spectra of cubic, and even planar cubic, graphs is subtle and very rich.

Constructing new families of transmission irregular graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The transmission of a vertex $v$ of a graph $G$ is the sum of distances from $v$ to all the other vertices in $G$. A graph is transmission irregular if all of its vertices have pairwise different transmissions. A starlike tree $T(k_1,\ldots,k_t)$ is a tree obtained by attaching to an isolated vertex $t$ pendant paths of lengths $k_1,\ldots,k_t$, respectively. It is proved that if a starlike tree $T(a,a+1,\ldots,a+k)$, $k\ge 2$, is of odd order, then it is transmission irregular. $T(1,2,\ldots,\ell)$, $\ell \ge 3$, is transmission irregular if and only if $\ell \notin \{r^2 + 1:\ r\ge 2\}$. Additional infinite families among the starlike trees and bi-starlike trees are determined. Transmission irregular unicyclic infinite families are also presented, in particular, the line graph of $T(a,a+1,a+2)$, $a\ge 2$, is transmission irregular if and only if $a$ is even.

Reflexive coloring complexes for 3-edge-colorings of cubic graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a 3-colorable graph $X$, the 3-coloring complex $B(X)$ is the graph whose vertices are all the independent sets which occur as color classes in some 3-coloring of $X$. Two color classes $C,D \in V(B(X))$ are joined by an edge if $C$ and $D$ appear together in a 3-coloring of $X$. The graph $B(X)$ is 3-colorable. Graphs for which $B(B(X))$ is isomorphic to $X$ are termed reflexive graphs. In this paper, we consider 3-edge-colorings of cubic graphs for which we allow half-edges. Then we consider the 3-coloring complexes of their line graphs. The main result of the paper is a surprising outcome that the line graph of any connected cubic triangle-free outerplanar graph is reflexive. We also exhibit some other interesting classes of reflexive line graphs.

A System of Billiard and Its Application to Information-Theoretic Entropy
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this article, we define an information-theoretic entropy based on the Ihara zeta function of a graph which is called the Ihara entropy. A dynamical system consists of a billiard ball and a set of reflectors correspond to a combinatorial graph. The reflectors are represented by the vertices of the graph. Movement of the billiard ball between two reflectors is represented by the edges. The prime cycles of this graph generate the bi-infinite sequences of the corresponding symbolic dynamical system. The number of different prime cycles of a given length can be expressed in terms of the adjacency matrix of the oriented line graph. It also constructs the formal power series expansion of Ihara zeta function. Therefore, the Ihara entropy has a deep connection with the dynamical system of billiards. As an information-theoretic entropy, it fulfils the generalized Shannon-Khinchin axioms. It is a weakly decomposable entropy whose composition law is given by the Lazard formal group law.

Distance matrix correlation spectrum of graphs
Let $G$ be a simple, connected graph, $\mathcal{D}(G)$ be the distance matrix of $G$, and $Tr(G)$ be the diagonal matrix of vertex transmissions of $G$. The distance Laplacian matrix and distance signless Laplacian matrix of $G$ are defined by $\mathcal{L}(G) = Tr(G)-\mathcal{D}(G)$ and $\mathcal{Q}(G) = Tr(G)+\mathcal{D}(G)$, respectively. The eigenvalues of $\mathcal{D}(G)$, $\mathcal{L}(G)$ and $\mathcal{Q}(G)$ is called the $\mathcal{D}-$spectrum, $\mathcal{L}-$spectrum and $\mathcal{Q}-$spectrum, respectively. The generalized distance matrix of $G$ is defined as $\mathcal{D}_α(G)=αTr(G)+(1-α)\mathcal{D}(G),~0\leqα\leq1$, and the generalized distance spectral radius of $G$ is the largest eigenvalue of $\mathcal{D}_α(G)$. In this paper, we give a complete description of the $\mathcal{D}-$spectrum, $\mathcal{L}-$spectrum and $\mathcal{Q}-$spectrum of some graphs obtained by operations. In addition, we present some new upper and lower bounds on the generalized distance spectral radius of $G$ and of its line graph $L(G)$, based on other graph-theoretic parameters, and characterize the extremal graphs. Finally, we study the generalized distance spectrum of some composite graphs.

Bounds for the rainbow disconnection number of graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
An edge-cut $R$ of an edge-colored connected graph is called a rainbow-cut if no two edges in the edge-cut are colored the same. An edge-colored graph is rainbow disconnected if for any two distinct vertices $u$ and $v$ of the graph, there exists a $u$-$v$-rainbow-cut separating them. For a connected graph $G$, the rainbow disconnection number of $G$, denoted by rd$(G)$, is defined as the smallest number of colors that are needed in order to make $G$ rainbow disconnected. In this paper, we first give some tight upper bounds for rd$(G)$, and moreover, we completely characterize the graphs which meet the upper bound of the Nordhaus-Gaddum type results obtained early by us. Secondly, we propose a conjecture that $λ^+(G)\leq \textnormal{rd}(G)\leq λ^+(G)+1$, where $λ^+(G)$ is the upper edge-connectivity, and prove the conjecture for many classes of graphs, to support it. Finally, we give the relationship between rd$(G)$ of a graph $G$ and the rainbow vertex-disconnection number rvd$(L(G))$ of the line graph $L(G)$ of $G$.
Geometric-Arithmetic index and line graph
Published in Journal of Mathematical Chemistry 2019 • View PublicationBIB
The concept of geometric-arithmetic index was introduced in the chemical graph theory recently, but it has shown to be useful. The aim of this paper is to obtain new inequalities involving the geometric-arithmetic index $GA_1$ and characterize graphs extremal with respect to them. Besides, we prove inequalities involving the geometric-arithmetic index of line graphs.
Relations between some topological indices and the line graph
Published in Journal of Mathematical Chemistry 2020 • View PublicationBIB
The concepts of geometric-arithmetic and harmonic indices were introduced in the area of chemical graph theory recently. They have proven to correlate well with physical and chemical properties of some molecules. The aim of this paper is to obtain new inequalities involving the first Zagreb, the harmonic, and the geometric-arithmetic $GA_1$ indices. Furthermore, inequalities relating these indices and line graphs are proven.
On the hyperbolicity constant of circular-arc graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Gromov hyperbolicity is an interesting geometric property, and so it is natural to study it in the context of geometric graphs. It measures the tree-likeness of a graph from a metric viewpoint. In particular, we are interested in circular-arc graphs, which is an important class of geometric intersection graphs. In this paper we give sharp bounds for the hyperbolicity constant of (finite and infinite) circular-arc graphs. Moreover, we obtain bounds for the hyperbolicity constant of the complement and line of any circular-arc graph. In order to do that, we obtain new results about regular, chordal and line graphs which are interesting by themselves.

The strong clique number of graphs with forbidden cycles
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a graph $G$, the strong clique number of $G$, denoted $ω_S(G)$, is the maximum size of a set $S$ of edges such that every pair of edges in $S$ has distance at most $2$ in the line graph of $G$. As a relaxation of the renowned Erdős--Nešetřil conjecture regarding the strong chromatic index, Faudree et al. suggested investigating the strong clique number, and conjectured a quadratic upper bound in terms of the maximum degree. Recently, Cames van Batenburg, Kang, and Pirot conjectured a linear upper bound in terms of the maximum degree for graphs without even cycles. Namely, if $G$ is a $C_{2k}$-free graph, then $ω_S(G)\leq (2k-1)Δ(G)-{2k-1\choose 2}$, and if $G$ is a $C_{2k}$-free bipartite graph, then $ω_S(G)\leq kΔ(G)-(k-1)$. We prove the second conjecture in a stronger form, by showing that forbidding all odd cycles is not necessary. To be precise, we show that a $\{C_5, C_{2k}\}$-free graph $G$ with $Δ(G)\ge 1$ satisfies $ω_S(G)\leq kΔ(G)-(k-1)$, when either $k\geq 4$ or $k\in \{2,3\}$ and $G$ is also $C_3$-free. Regarding the first conjecture, we prove an upper bound that is off by the constant term. Namely, for $k\geq 3$, we prove that a $C_{2k}$-free graph $G$ with $Δ(G)\ge 1$ satisfies $ω_S(G)\leq (2k-1)Δ(G)+(2k-1)^2$. This improves some results of Cames van Batenburg, Kang, and Pirot.
Colorings of complements of line graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Our purpose is to show that complements of line graphs enjoy nice coloring properties. We show that for all graphs in this class the local and usual chromatic numbers are equal. We also prove a sufficient condition for the chromatic number to be equal to a natural upper bound. A consequence of this latter condition is a complete characterization of all induced subgraphs of the Kneser graph $\operatorname{KG}(n,2)$ that have a chromatic number equal to its chromatic number, namely $n-2$. In addition to the upper bound, a lower bound is provided by Dol'nikov's theorem, a classical result of the topological method in graph theory. We prove the $\operatorname{NP}$-hardness of deciding the equality between the chromatic number and any of these bounds. The topological method is especially suitable for the study of coloring properties of complements of line graphs of hypergraphs. Nevertheless, all proofs in this paper are elementary and we also provide a short discussion on the ability for the topological methods to cover some of our results.
Signed analogue of line graphs and their smallest eigenvalues
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we show that every connected signed graph with smallest eigenvalue strictly greater than $-2$ and large enough minimum degree is switching equivalent to a complete graph. This is a signed analogue of a theorem of Hoffman. The proof is based on what we call Hoffman's limit theorem which we formulate for Hermitian matrices, and also the extension of the concept of Hoffman graph and line graph for the setting of signed graphs.

$k$-tree connectivity of line graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a graph $G=(V,E)$ and a set $S\subseteq V(G)$ of size at least $2$, an $S$-Steiner tree $T$ is a subgraph of $G$ that is a tree with $S\subseteq V(T)$. Two $S$-Steiner trees $T$ and $T'$ are internally disjoint (resp. edge-disjoint) if $E(T)\cap E(T')=\emptyset$ and $V(T)\cap V(T')=S$ (resp. if $E(T)\cap E(T')=\emptyset$). Let $κ_G (S)$ (resp. $λ_G (S)$) denote the maximum number of internally disjoint (resp. edge-disjoint) $S$-Steiner trees in $G$. The $k$-tree connectivity $κ_k(G)$ (resp. $k$-tree edge-connectivity $λ_k(G)$) of $G$ is then defined as the minimum $κ_G (S)$ (resp. $λ_G (S)$), where $S$ ranges over all $k$-subsets of $V(G)$. In [H. Li, B. Wu, J. Meng, Y. Ma, Steiner tree packing number and tree connectivity, Discrete Math. 341(2018), 1945--1951], the authors conjectured that if a connected graph $G$ has at least $k$ vertices and at least $k$ edges, then $κ_k(L(G))\geq λ_k(G)$ for any $k\geq 2$, where $L(G)$ is the line graph of $G$. In this paper, we confirm this conjecture and prove that the bound is sharp.
Total tessellation cover and quantum walk
We propose the total staggered quantum walk model and the total tessellation cover of a graph. This model uses the concept of total tessellation cover to describe the motion of the walker who is allowed to hop both to vertices and edges of the graph, in contrast with previous models in which the walker hops either to vertices or edges. We establish bounds on $T_t(G)$, which is the smallest number of tessellations required in a total tessellation cover of $G$. We highlight two of these lower bounds $T_t(G) \geq ω(G)$ and $T_t(G)\geq is(G)+1$, where $ω(G)$ is the size of a maximum clique and $is(G)$ is the number of edges of a maximum induced star subgraph. Using these bounds, we define the good total tessellable graphs with either $T_t(G)=ω(G)$ or $T_t(G)=is(G)+1$. The $k$-total tessellability problem aims to decide whether a given graph $G$ has $T_t(G) \leq k$. We show that $k$-total tessellability is in $\mathcal{P}$ for good total tessellable graphs. We establish the $\mathcal{NP}$-completeness of the following problems when restricted to the following classes: ($is(G)+1$)-total tessellability for graphs with $ω(G) = 2$; $ω(G)$-total tessellability for graphs $G$ with $is(G)+1 = 3$; $k$-total tessellability for graphs $G$ with $\max\{ω(G), is(G)+1\}$ far from $k$; and $4$-total tessellability for graphs $G$ with $ω(G) = is(G)+1 = 4$. As a consequence, we establish hardness results for bipartite graphs, line graphs of triangle-free graphs, universal graphs, planar graphs, and $(2,1)$-chordal graphs.
The uniqueness of covers for widely generalized line graphs
As a natural generalization of line graphs, Hoffman line graphs were defined by Woo and Neumaier. Especially, Hoffman line graphs are closely related to the smallest eigenvalue of graphs, and the uniqueness of strict covers of a Hoffman line graph plays a key role in such a study. In this paper, we prove a theorem for the uniqueness of strict covers under a condition which can be checked in finite time. Our result gives a generalization and a short proof for the main part of [Ars Math.~Contemp. \textbf{1} (2008) 81--98].

Quasigraphs and skeletal partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give a new proof of the Skeletal Lemma, which is the main technical tool in our paper on Hamilton cycles in line graphs [T. Kaiser and P. Vrána, Hamilton cycles in 5-connected line graphs, European J. Combin. 33 (2012), 924-947]. It generalises results on disjoint spanning trees in graphs to the context of 3-hypergraphs. The lemma is proved in a slightly stronger version that is more suitable for applications. The proof is simplified and formulated in a more accessible way.

The hamiltonicity of essentially 9-connected line graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Yang et al. proved that every 3-connected, essentially 11-connected line graph is Hamilton-connected. This was extended by Li and Yang to 3-connected, essentially 10-connected graphs. Strengthening their result further, we prove that 3-connected, essentially 9-connected line graphs are Hamilton-connected. We use a method based on quasigraphs in combination with the discharging technique. The result extends to claw-free graphs.
Some observations on the smallest adjacency eigenvalue of a graph
In this paper, we discuss various connections between the smallest eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix of a graph and its structure. There are several techniques for obtaining upper bounds on the smallest eigenvalue, and some of them are based on Rayleigh quotients, Cauchy interlacing using induced subgraphs, and Haemers interlacing with vertex partitions and quotient matrices. In this paper, we are interested in obtaining lower bounds for the smallest eigenvalue. Motivated by results on line graphs and generalized line graphs, we show how graph decompositions can be used to obtain such lower bounds.
Extended Nestohedra and their Face Numbers
Nestohedra are a family of convex polytopes that includes permutohedra, associahedra, and graph associahedra. In this paper, we study an extension of such polytopes, called extended nestohedra. We show that these objects are indeed the boundaries of simple polytopes, answering a question of Lam and Pylyavskyy. We also study the duals of (extended) nestohedra, giving a complete characterization of isomorphisms (as simplicial complexes) between the duals of extended nestohedra and a partial characterization of isomorphisms between the duals of nestohedra and extended nestohedra. In addition, we give formulas for their $f$-, $h$-, and $γ$-vectors. This includes showing that the $f$-vectors of the extended nestohedron corresponding to a forest $F$ and the nestohedron corresponding to the line graph of $F$ are the same, as well as showing that all flag extended nestohedra have nonnegative $γ$-vectors, thus proving Gal's conjecture for a large class of flag simple polytopes. We also relate the $f$- and $h$-vectors of the nestohedra and extended nestohedra, as well as give explicit formulas for the $h$- and $γ$-vectors in terms of descent statistics for a certain class of flag extended nestohedra. Finally, we define a partial ordering on partial permutations that is a join semilattice quotient of the weak Bruhar order on the symmetric group, and such that any linear extension of the partial order provides a shelling of the dual of the stellohedron.
