Structure of the rational monoid algebra for Boolean matrices of order 3
Published • View PublicationBIB
We use computer algebra to study the 512-dimensional associative algebra Q B_3, the rational monoid algebra of 3 x 3 Boolean matrices. We obtain a basis for the radical in bijection with the 42 non-regular elements of B_3. The center of the 470-dimensional semisimple quotient has dimension 14; we use a splitting algorithm to find a basis of orthogonal primitive idempotents. We show that the semisimple quotient is the direct sum of simple two-sided ideals isomorphic to d x d rational matrix algebras for d = 1, 1, 1, 2, 3, 3, 3, 3, 6, 6, 7, 9, 9, 12. We construct the irreducible representations of B_3 over Q by calculating the representation matrices for a minimal set of generators.

Cellular Algebras and Graph Invariants Based on Quantum Walks
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider two graph invariants inspired by quantum walks- one in continuous time and one in discrete time. We will associate a matrix algebra called a cellular algebra with every graph. We show that, if the cellular algebras of two graphs have a similar structure, then they are not distinguished by either of the proposed invariants.

Matrix Algebras and Semidefinite Programming Techniques for Codes
This PhD thesis is concerned with SDP bounds for codes: upper bounds for (non)-binary error correcting codes and lower bounds for (non)-binary covering codes. The methods are based on the method of Schrijver that uses triple distances in stead of pairs as in the classical Delsarte bound. The main topics discussed are: 1) Block-diagonalisation of matrix *-algebras, 2) Terwilliger-algebra of the nonbinary Hamming scheme (including an explicit block-diagonalisation), 3) SDP-bounds for (nonbinary) error-correcting codes and covering codes (including computational results), 4) Discussion on the relation with matrix-cuts, 5) Computational results for Affine caps.
Algebraic Combinatorics in Mathematical Chemistry. Methods and Algorithms. II. Program Implementation of the Weisfeiler-Leman Algorithm
The stabilization algorithm of Weisfeiler and Leman has as an input any square matrix A of order n and returns the minimal cellular (coherent) algebra W(A) which includes A. In case when A=A(G) is the adjacency matrix of a graph G the algorithm examines all configurations in G having three vertices and, according to this information, partitions vertices and ordered pairs of vertices into equivalence classes. The resulting construction allows to associate to each graph G a matrix algebra W(G):= W(A(G))$ which is an invariant of the graph G. For many classes of graphs, in particular for most of the molecular graphs, the algebra W(G) coincides with the centralizer algebra of the automorphism group aut(G). In such a case the partition returned by the stabilization algorithm is equal to the partition into orbits of aut(G). We give algebraic and combinatorial descriptions of the Weisfeiler--Leman algorithm and present an efficient computer implementation of the algorithm written in C. The results obtained by testing the program on a considerable number of examples of graphs, in particular on some chemical molecular graphs, are also included.

Block diagonalization for algebra's associated with block codes
For a matrix *-algebra B, consider the matrix *-algebra A consisting of the symmetric tensors in the n-fold tensor product of B. Examples of such algebras in coding theory include the Bose-Mesner algebra and Terwilliger algebra of the (non)binary Hamming cube, and algebras arising in SDP-hierarchies for coding bounds using moment matrices. We give a computationally efficient block diagonalization of A in terms of a given block diagonalization of B, and work out some examples, including the Terwilliger algebra of the binary- and nonbinary Hamming cube. As a tool we use some basic facts about representations of the symmetric group.

Torus-invariant prime ideals in quantum matrices, totally nonnegative cells and symplectic leaves
Published • View PublicationBIB
The algebra of quantum matrices of a given size supports a rational torus action by automorphisms. It follows from work of Letzter and the first named author that to understand the prime and primitive spectra of this algebra, the first step is to understand the prime ideals that are invariant under the torus action. In this paper, we prove that a family of quantum minors is the set of all quantum minors that belong to a given torus-invariant prime ideal of a quantum matrix algebra if and only if the corresponding family of minors defines a non-empty totally nonnegative cell in the space of totally nonnegative real matrices of the appropriate size. As a corollary, we obtain explicit generating sets of quantum minors for the torus-invariant prime ideals of quantum matrices in the case where the quantisation parameter $q$ is transcendental over $\mathbb{Q}$.

Supertropical Matrix Algebra II: Solving tropical equations
Published • View PublicationBIB
We continue the study of matrices over a supertropical algebra, proving the existence of a tangible adjoint of $A$, which provides the unique right (resp. left) quasi-inverse maximal with respect to the right (resp. left) quasi-identity matrix corresponding to $A$; this provides a unique maximal (tangible) solution to supertropical vector equations, via a version of Cramer's rule. We also describe various properties of this tangible adjoint, and use it to compute supertropical eigenvectors, thereby producing an example in which an $n\times n$ matrix has $n$ distinct supertropical eigenvalues but their supertropical eigenvectors are tropically dependent.

Supertropical matrix algebra
Published • View PublicationBIB
The objective of this paper is to develop a general algebraic theory of supertropical matrix algebra, extending [11]. Our main results are as follows: * The tropical determinant (i.e., permanent) is multiplicative when all the determinants involved are tangible. * There exists an adjoint matrix $\adj{A}$ such that the matrix $A \adj{A}$ behaves much like the identity matrix (times $|A|$). * Every matrix $A$ is a supertropical root of its Hamilton-Cayley polynomial $f_A$. If these roots are distinct, then $A$ is conjugate (in a certain supertropical sense) to a diagonal matrix. * The tropical determinant of a matrix $A$ is a ghost iff the rows of $A$ are tropically dependent, iff the columns of $A$ are tropically dependent. * Every root of $f_A$ is a "supertropical" eigenvalue of $A$ (appropriately defined), and has a tangible supertropical eigenvector.

Tropical Arithmetic and Tropical Matrix Algebra
Published in Communication in Algebra, 37(4):1445 - 1468 , 2009 • View PublicationBIB
This paper introduces a new structure of commutative semiring, generalizing the tropical semiring, and having an arithmetic that modifies the standard tropical operations, i.e. summation and maximum. Although our framework is combinatorial, notions of regularity and invertibility arise naturally for matrices over this semiring; we show that a tropical matrix is invertible if and only if it is regular.

Research problem: The completion number of a graph
Published • View PublicationBIB
Motivated by the remarkable interplay between (chordal) graphs and matrix algebra, we associate to each graph a so-called completion number that might encode some aspects of that interplay. We show that this number is not trivial, and we ask for a graph theoretic characterization of those graphs with a given completion number.
