This paper confirms a conjecture of Amdeberhan and Moll that the power of 2 dividing the number of plane partitions in an n-cube is greater than the power of 2 dividing the number of totally symmetric plane partitions in the same cube when n is even, and less when n is odd.
On the connection between correlation-immune functions and perfect 2-colorings of the Boolean n-cube
A coloring of the Boolean $n$-cube is called perfect if, for every vertex $x$, the collection of the colors of the neighbors of $x$ depends only on the color of $x$. A Boolean function is called correlation-immune of degree $n-m$ if it takes the value 1 the same number of times for each $m$-face of the Boolean $n$-cube. In the present paper it is proven that each Boolean function $χ^S$ ($S\subset E^n$) satisfies the inequality $${\rm nei}(S)+ 2({\rm cor}(S)+1)(1-ρ(S))\leq n,$$ where ${\rm cor}(S)$ is the maximum degree of the correlation immunity of $χ^S$, ${\rm nei} (S)= \frac{1}{|S|}\sum\limits_{x\in S}|B(x)\cap S|-1$ is the average number of neighbors in the set $S$ for vertices in $S$, and $ρ(S)=|S|/2^n$ is the density of the set $S$.
Moreover, the function $χ^S$ is a perfect coloring if and only if we obtain an equality in the above formula.

Unique-sink orientations (USOs) are an abstract class of orientations of the n-cube graph. We consider some classes of USOs that are of interest in connection with the linear complementarity problem. We summarise old and show new lower and upper bounds on the sizes of some such classes. Furthermore, we provide a characterisation of K-matrices in terms of their corresponding USOs.
Polytopes with Special Simplices
For a polytope P a simplex S with vertex set V(S) is called a special simplex if every facet of P contains all but exactly one vertex of S. For such polytopes P with face complex F(P) containing a special simplex the subcomplex F(P) / V(S) of all faces not containing vertices of S is the boundary of a polytope Q - the basis polytope of P. If additionally the dimension of the affine basis space of F(P) / V(S) equals dim(Q), we call P meek; otherwise we call P wild. We give a full combinatorial classification and techniques for geometric construction of the class of meek polytopes with special simplices. We show that every wild polytope P' with special simplex can be constructed out of a particular meek one P by intersecting P with particular hyperplanes. It is non-trivial to find all these hyperplanes for an arbitrary basis polytope; we give an exact description for 2-basis polytopes. Furthermore we show that the f-vector of each wild polytope with special simplex is component wise bounded above by the f-vector of a particular meek one which can be computed explicitly. Finally, we discuss the n-cube as a non-trivial example of a wild polytope with special simplex and prove that its basis polytope is the zonotope given by the Minkowski sum of the (n-1)-cube and the vector (1,...,1). Polytopes with special simplex have applications on Ehrhart theory, toric rings and were just used by Francisco Santos to construct a counter-example disproving the Hirsch conjecture.

We describe new constructions of graphs which exhibit perfect state transfer on continuous-time quantum walks. Our constructions are based on variants of the double cones [BCMS09,ANOPRT10,ANOPRT09] and the Cartesian graph products (which includes the n-cube) [CDDEKL05]. Some of our results include: (1) If $G$ is a graph with perfect state transfer at time $t_{G}$, where $t_{G}\Spec(G) \subseteq \ZZπ$, and $H$ is a circulant with odd eigenvalues, their weak product $G \times H$ has perfect state transfer. Also, if $H$ is a regular graph with perfect state transfer at time $t_{H}$ and $G$ is a graph where $t_{H}|V_{H}|\Spec(G) \subseteq 2\ZZπ$, their lexicographic product $G[H]$ has perfect state transfer. (2) The double cone $\overline{K}_{2} + G$ on any connected graph $G$, has perfect state transfer if the weights of the cone edges are proportional to the Perron eigenvector of $G$. This generalizes results for double cone on regular graphs studied in [BCMS09,ANOPRT10,ANOPRT09]. (3) For an infinite family $\GG$ of regular graphs, there is a circulant connection so the graph $K_{1}+\GG\circ\GG+K_{1}$ has perfect state transfer. In contrast, no perfect state transfer exists if a complete bipartite connection is used (even in the presence of weights) [ANOPRT09]. We also describe a generalization of the path collapsing argument [CCDFGS03,CDDEKL05], which reduces questions about perfect state transfer to simpler (weighted) multigraphs, for graphs with equitable distance partitions.
Irredundant Families of Subcubes

We consider the problem of finding the maximum possible size of a family of k-dimensional subcubes of the n-cube {0,1}^{n}, none of which is contained in the union of the others. (We call such a family `irredundant'). Aharoni and Holzman conjectured that for k > n/2, the answer is {n choose k} (which is attained by the family of all k-subcubes containing a fixed point). We give a new proof of a general upper bound of Meshulam, and we prove that for k >= n/2, any irredundant family in which all the subcubes go through either (0,0,...,0) or (1,1,...,1) has size at most {n choose k}. We then give a general lower bound, showing that Meshulam's upper bound is always tight up to a factor of at most e.

A 2-coloring of the n-cube in the n-dimensional Euclidean space can be considered as an assignment of weights of 1 or 0 to the vertices. Such a colored n-cube is said to be balanced if its center of mass coincides with its geometric center. Let $B_{n,2k}$ be the number of balanced 2-colorings of the n-cube with 2k vertices having weight 1. Palmer, Read and Robinson conjectured that for $n\geq 1$, the sequence $\{B_{n,2k}\}_{k=0, 1 ... 2^{n-1}}$ is symmetric and unimodal. We give a proof of this conjecture. We also propose a conjecture on the log-concavity of $B_{n,2k}$ for fixed k, and by probabilistic method we show that it holds when n is sufficiently large.

We study the problem of acute triangulations of convex polyhedra and the space R^n. Here an acute triangulation is a triangulation into simplices whose dihedral angles are acute. We prove that acute triangulations of the n-cube do not exist for n>=4. Further, we prove that acute triangulations of the space R^n do not exist for n>= 5. In the opposite direction, in R^3, we present a construction of an acute triangulation of the cube, the regular octahedron and a non-trivial acute triangulation of the regular tetrahedron. We also prove nonexistence of an acute triangulation of R^4 if all dihedral angles are bounded away from pi/2.

With a view toward studying the homotopy type of spaces of Boolean formulae, we introduce a simplicial complex, called the theta complex, associated to any hypergraph, which is the Alexander dual of the more well-known independence complex. In particular, the set of satisfiable formulae in k-conjunctive normal form with less than or equal to n variables has the homotopy type of Theta(Cube(n,n-k)), where Cube(n,n-k) is a hypergraph associated to the (n-k)-skeleton of an n-cube. We make partial progress in calculating the homotopy type of theta for these cubical hypergraphs, and we also give calculations and examples for other hypergraphs as well. Indeed studying the theta complex of hypergraphs is an interesting problem in its own right.

In this note we establish a Ramsey-type result for certain subsets of the $n$-dimensional cube. This can then be applied to obtain reasonable bounds on various related structures, such as (partial) Hales-Jewett lines for alphabets of sized 3 and 4, Hilbert cubes in sets of real numbers with small sumsets, "corner" in the integer lattice in the plane, and 3-term geometric progressions in integers.

A vertex 2-coloring of a graph is said to be perfect with parameters $(a_{ij})_{i,j=1}^k$ if for every $i,j\in\{1,...,k\}$ every vertex of color $i$ is adjacent with exactly $a_{ij}$ vertices of color $j$. We consider the perfect 2-colorings of the distance-2 graph of the 24-cube $\{0,1\}^{24}$ with parameters $((20+c,256-c)(c,276-c))$ (i.e., with eigenvalue 20). We prove that such colorings exist for all $c$ from 1 to 128 except 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 10, 13 and do not exist for $c=1, 2, 4, 5, 7$. Construction and Analysis of Projected Deformed Products

We introduce a deformed product construction for simple polytopes in terms of lower-triangular block matrix representations. We further show how Gale duality can be employed for the construction and for the analysis of deformed products such that specified faces (e.g. all the k-faces) are ``strictly preserved'' under projection. Thus, starting from an arbitrary neighborly simplicial (d-2)-polytope Q on n-1 vertices we construct a deformed n-cube, whose projection to the last dcoordinates yields a neighborly cubical d-polytope. As an extension of thecubical case, we construct matrix representations of deformed products of(even) polygons (DPPs), which have a projection to d-space that retains the complete (\lfloor \tfrac{d}{2} \rfloor - 1)-skeleton. In both cases the combinatorial structure of the images under projection is completely determined by the neighborly polytope Q: Our analysis provides explicit combinatorial descriptions. This yields a multitude of combinatorially different neighborly cubical polytopes and DPPs. As a special case, we obtain simplified descriptions of the neighborly cubical polytopes of Joswig & Ziegler (2000) as well as of the ``projected deformed products of polygons'' that were announced by Ziegler (2004), a family of 4-polytopes whose ``fatness'' gets arbitrarily close to 9.
Large components in random induced subgraphs of n-cubes

In this paper we study random induced subgraphs of the binary $n$-cube, $Q_2^n$. This random graph is obtained by selecting each $Q_2^n$-vertex with independent probability $λ_n$. Using a novel construction of subcomponents we study the largest component for $λ_n=\frac{1+χ_n}{n}$, where $ε\ge χ_n\ge n^{-{1/3}+ δ}$, $δ>0$. We prove that there exists a.s. a unique largest component $C_n^{(1)}$. We furthermore show that $χ_n=ε$, $| C_n^{(1)}|\sim α(ε) \frac{1+χ_n}{n} 2^n$ and for $o(1)=χ_n\ge n^{-{1/3}+δ}$, $| C_n^{(1)}| \sim 2 χ_n \frac{1+χ_n}{n} 2^n$ holds. This improves the result of \cite{Bollobas:91} where constant $χ_n=χ$ is considered. In particular, in case of $λ_n=\frac{1+ε} {n}$, our analysis implies that a.s. a unique giant component exists.
Las Vergnas Cube Conjecture and reconstruction properties of the cube matroid
Las Vergnas Cube Conjecture states that the cube matroid has exactly one class of orientations. We prove that this conjecture is equivalent to saying that the oriented matroid of the affine dependencies of the n-cube can be reconstructed from the underlying matroid and one of the following partial lists of signed circuits or cocircuits: A) the signed circuits of rank 3, or B) the positive signed cocircuits.

An asymmetric binary covering code of length n and radius R is a subset C of the n-cube Q_n such that every vector x in Q_n can be obtained from some vector c in C by changing at most R 1's of c to 0's, where R is as small as possible. K^+(n,R) is defined as the smallest size of such a code. We show K^+(n,R) is of order 2^n/n^R for constant R, using an asymmetric sphere-covering bound and probabilistic methods. We show K^+(n,n-R')=R'+1 for constant coradius R' iff n>=R'(R'+1)/2. These two results are extended to near-constant R and R', respectively. Various bounds on K^+ are given in terms of the total number of 0's or 1's in a minimal code. The dimension of a minimal asymmetric linear binary code ([n,R]^+ code) is determined to be min(0,n-R). We conclude by discussing open problems and techniques to compute explicit values for K^+, giving a table of best known bounds.

We show that the Holt-Klee conditions are very insufficient for an orientation of the graph of a polytope to be an LP-orientation in the case of the n-cube. We also give a strengthening of the Holt-Klee conditions which is both necessary and sufficient in the case of the crosspolytope.

Let G be a random subgraph of the n-cube where each edge appears randomly and independently with probability p. We prove that the largest eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix of G is almost surely λ_1(G)= (1+o(1)) max(Δ^{1/2}(G),np), where Δ(G) is the maximum degree of G and o(1) term tends to zero as max (Δ^{1/2}(G), np) tends to infinity.
On the Isomorphic Embedding of Rectangular Grids in n-cubes

The sum in the title is a rational multiple of pi^n for all integers n=2,3,4,... for which the sum converges absolutely. This is equivalent to a celebrated theorem of Euler. Of the many proofs that have appeared since Euler, a simple one was discovered only recently by Calabi: the sum is written as a definite integral over the unit n-cube, then transformed into the volume of a polytope Pi_n in R^n whose vertices' coordinates are rational multiples of pi. We review Calabi's proof, and give two further interpretations. First we define a simple linear operator T on L^2(0,pi/2), and show that T is self-adjoint and compact, and that Vol(Pi_n) is the trace of T^n. We find that the spectrum of T is {1/(4k+1) : k in Z}, with each eigenvalue 1/(4k+1) occurring with multiplicity 1; thus Vol(Pi_n) is the sum of the n-th powers of these eigenvalues. We also interpret Vol(Pi_n) combinatorially in terms of the number of alternating permutations of n+1 letters, and if n is even also in terms of the number of cyclically alternating permutations of n letters. We thus relate these numbers with S(n) without the intervention of Bernoulli and Euler numbers or their generating functions.
