Orientable Hamiltonian Embeddings of the Hypercube Graph
A Hamiltonian embedding is an embedding of a graph $G$ such that the boundary of each face is a Hamiltonian cycle of $G$. It is shown that the hypercube graph $Q_n$ admits such an embedding on an orientable surface when $n$ is a power of 2. Basic necessary conditions on Hamiltonian embeddings for $Q_n$ and conjectures are made about other values of $n$.

Positivity for quasi-cluster algebras
We generalise the expansion formulae of Musiker, Schiffler and Williams, obtained for cluster algebras from orientable surfaces, to a larger class of coefficients which we call principal laminations. In doing so, for any quasi-cluster algebra from a non-orientable surface, we are able to obtain expansion formulae for each cluster variable with respect to any initial quasi-triangulation $T$, and any choice of principal lamination. Moreover, generalising the `separation of additions' formula of Fomin and Zelevinsky, we settle a conjecture of Lam and Pylyavskyy in the setting of quasi-cluster algebras. Namely, we prove the positivity conjecture for quasi-cluster algebras with respect to any choice of coefficients.
Automorphisms of the k-curve graph
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a natural number k and an orientable surface S of finite type, define the k-curve graph to be the graph with vertices corresponding to isotopy classes of essential simple closed curves on S and with edges corresponding to pairs of such curves admitting representatives that intersect at most k times. We prove that the automorphism group of the k-curve graph of a surface S is isomorphic to the extended mapping class group for all k sufficiently small with respect to the Euler characteristic of S. We prove the same result for the so-called systolic complex, a variant of the curve graph whose complete subgraphs encode the intersection patterns for any collection of systoles with respect to a hyperbolic metric. This resolves a conjecture of Schmutz Schaller.

Minimum-cost integer circulations in given homology classes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $D$ be a directed graph cellularly embedded in a surface together with non-negative cost on its arcs. Given any integer circulation in $D$, we study the problem of finding a minimum-cost non-negative integer circulation in $D$ that is homologous over the integers to the given circulation. A special case of this problem arises in recent work on the stable set problem for graphs with bounded odd cycle packing number, in which the surface is non-orientable (Conforti et al., SODA'20). For orientable surfaces, polynomial-time algorithms have been obtained for different variants of this problem. We complement these results by showing that the convex hull of feasible solutions has a very simple polyhedral description. In contrast, only little seems to be known about the case of non-orientable surfaces. We show that the problem is strongly NP-hard for general non-orientable surfaces, and give the first polynomial-time algorithm for surfaces of fixed genus. For the latter, we provide a characterization of homology (over the integers) that allows us to recast the problem as a special integer program, which can be efficiently solved using proximity results and dynamic programming.
Algebraic k-systems of curves
Published • View PublicationBIB
A collection $ Δ$ of simple closed curves on an orientable surface is an algebraic $ k $-system if the algebraic intersection number $\langle α,β\rangle$ is equal to $k $ in absolute value for every $ α, β\in Δ$ distinct. Generalizing a theorem of [MRT14] we compute that the maximum size of an algebraic $k$-system of curves on a surface of genus $g$ is $2g+1$ when $g\ge 3$ or $k$ is odd, and $2g$ otherwise. To illustrate the tightness in our assumptions, we present a construction of curves pairwise geometrically intersecting twice whose size grows as $g^2$.

It is proved that for any prescribed orientation of the triples of either a Steiner triple system or a Latin square of odd order, there exists an embedding in an orientable surface with the triples forming triangular faces and one extra large face.

Edge-maximal graphs on orientable and some non-orientable surfaces
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study edge-maximal, non-complete graphs on surfaces that do not triangulate the surface. We prove that there is no such graph on the projective plane $\mathbb{N}_1$, $K_7-e$ is the unique such graph on the Klein bottle $\mathbb{N}_2$ and $K_8-E(C_5)$ is the unique such graph on the torus $\mathbb{S}_1$. In contrast to this for each $g\ge 2$ we construct an infinite family of such graphs on the orientable surface $\mathbb{S}_g$ of genus $g$, that are $\lfloor \frac{g}{2} \rfloor$ edges short of a triangulation.
Relative Heffter arrays and biembeddings
Published • View PublicationBIB
Relative Heffter arrays, denoted by $\mathrm{H}_t(m,n; s,k)$, have been introduced as a generalization of the classical concept of Heffter array. A $\mathrm{H}_t(m,n; s,k)$ is an $m\times n$ partially filled array with elements in $\mathbb{Z}_v$, where $v=2nk+t$, whose rows contain $s$ filled cells and whose columns contain $k$ filled cells, such that the elements in every row and column sum to zero and, for every $x\in \mathbb{Z}_v$ not belonging to the subgroup of order $t$, either $x$ or $-x$ appears in the array. In this paper we show how relative Heffter arrays can be used to construct biembeddings of cyclic cycle decompositions of the complete multipartite graph $K_{\frac{2nk+t}{t}\times t}$ into an orientable surface. In particular, we construct such biembeddings providing integer globally simple square relative Heffter arrays for $t=k=3,5,7,9$ and $n\equiv 3 \pmod 4$ and for $k=3$ with $t=n,2n$, any odd $n$.
The stable set problem in graphs with bounded genus and bounded odd cycle packing number
Published • View PublicationBIB
Consider the family of graphs without $ k $ node-disjoint odd cycles, where $ k $ is a constant. Determining the complexity of the stable set problem for such graphs $ G $ is a long-standing problem. We give a polynomial-time algorithm for the case that $ G $ can be further embedded in a (possibly non-orientable) surface of bounded genus. Moreover, we obtain polynomial-size extended formulations for the respective stable set polytopes. To this end, we show that $2$-sided odd cycles satisfy the Erdős-Pósa property in graphs embedded in a fixed surface. This extends the fact that odd cycles satisfy the Erdős-Pósa property in graphs embedded in a fixed orientable surface (Kawarabayashi & Nakamoto, 2007). Eventually, our findings allow us to reduce the original problem to the problem of finding a minimum-cost non-negative integer circulation of a certain homology class, which turns out to be efficiently solvable in our case.

Biembeddings of cycle systems using integer Heffter arrays
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we will show the existence of a face $2$-colourable biembedding of the complete graph onto an orientable surface where each face is a cycle of a fixed length $k$, for infinitely many values of $k$. In particular, under certain conditions, we show that there exists at least $(n-2)[(p-2)!]^2/(e^2 kn)$ non-isomorphic face $2$-colourable biembeddings of $K_{2nk+1}$ in which all faces are cycles of length $k=4p+3$. These conditions are: $n\equiv 1\mod 4$, $k\equiv 3\mod 4$ and either $n$ is prime or $n\gg k$ and $n\equiv 0\mod 3$ implies $p\equiv 1\mod 3$. To achieve this result we begin by verifying the existence of $(n-2)[(p-2)!/e]^2$ non-equivalent Heffter arrays, $H(n;k)$, which satisfy the conditions: (1) for each row and each column the sequential partial sums determined by the natural ordering must be distinct modulo $2nk+1$; (2) the composition of the natural orderings of the rows and columns is equivalent to a single cycle permutation on the entries in the array. The existence of Heffter arrays $H(n;k)$ that satisfy condition (1) was established earlier in \cite{BCDY} and in this current paper we vary this construction and show that there are at least $(n-2)[(p-2)!/e]^2$ such non-equivalent $H(n;k)$ that satisfy condition (1) and then show that each of these Heffter arrays also satisfy condition (2) under certain conditions.
Globally simple Heffter arrays $H(n;k)$ when $k\equiv 0,3\mod 4$
Square Heffter arrays are $n\times n$ arrays such that each row and each column contains $k$ filled cells, each row and column sum is divisible by $2nk+1$ and either $x$ or $-x$ appears in the array for each integer $1\leq x\leq nk$. Archdeacon noted that a Heffter array, satisfying two additional conditions, yields a face $2$-colourable embedding of the complete graph $K_{2nk+1}$ on an orientable surface, where for each colour, the faces give a $k$-cycle system. Moreover, a cyclic permutation on the vertices acts as an automorphism of the embedding. These necessary conditions pertain to cyclic orderings of the entries in each row and each column of the Heffter array and are: (1) for each row and each column the sequential partial sums determined by the cyclic ordering must be distinct modulo $2nk+1$; (2) the composition of the cyclic orderings of the rows and columns is equivalent to a single cycle permutation on the entries in the array. We construct Heffter arrays that satisfy condition (1) whenever (a) $k\equiv 0\mod 4$; or (b) $n\equiv 1\mod 4$ and $k\equiv 3\mod 4$; or (c) $n\equiv 0\mod 4$, $k\equiv3\mod 4$ and $n\gg k$. As corollaries to the above we obtain pairs of orthogonal $k$-cycle decompositions of $K_{2nk+1}$.

Fractional cocoloring of graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The cochromatic number $Z(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the fewest number of colors needed to color the vertices of $G$ so that each color class is a clique or an independent set. In a fractional cocoloring of $G$ a non-negative weight is assigned to each clique and independent set so that for each vertex $v$, the sum of the weights of all cliques and independent sets containing $v$ is at least one. The smallest total weight of such a fractional cocoloring of $G$ is the fractional cochromatic number $Z_f(G)$. In this paper we prove results for the fractional cochromatic number $Z_f(G)$ that parallel results for $Z(G)$ and the well studied fractional chromatic number $χ_f{(G)}$. For example $Z_f(G)=χ_f(G)$ when $G$ is triangle-free, except when the only nontrivial component of $G$ is a star. More generally, if $G$ contains no $k$-clique, then $Z_f(G)\le χ_f(G)\le Z_f(G)+R(k,k)$. Moreover, every graph $G$ with $χ_f(G)=m$ contains a subgraph $H$ with $Z_f(H)\ge (\frac 14 - o(1))\frac m{\log_2 m}$. We also prove that the maximum value of $Z_f(G)$ over all graphs $G$ of order $n$ is $Θ(n/\log n)$, and the maximum over all graphs embedded on an orientable surface of genus $g$ is $Θ(\sqrt g / \log g)$.

A Linear Upper Bound on the Weisfeiler-Leman Dimension of Graphs of Bounded Genus
The Weisfeiler-Leman (WL) dimension of a graph is a measure for the inherent descriptive complexity of the graph. While originally derived from a combinatorial graph isomorphism test called the Weisfeiler-Leman algorithm, the WL dimension can also be characterised in terms of the number of variables that is required to describe the graph up to isomorphism in first-order logic with counting quantifiers. It is known that the WL dimension is upper-bounded for all graphs that exclude some fixed graph as a minor (Grohe, JACM 2012). However, the bounds that can be derived from this general result are astronomic. Only recently, it was proved that the WL dimension of planar graphs is at most 3 (Kiefer, Ponomarenko, and Schweitzer, LICS 2017). In this paper, we prove that the WL dimension of graphs embeddable in a surface of Euler genus $g$ is at most $4g+3$. For the WL dimension of graphs embeddable in an orientable surface of Euler genus $g$, our approach yields an upper bound of $2g+3$.

On the upper embedding of symmetric configurations with block size 3
Published in Discrete Mathematics Volume 343, Issue 4, April 2020, 111774 • View PublicationBIB
We consider the problem of embedding a symmetric configuration with block size 3 in an orientable surface in such a way that the blocks of the configuration form triangular faces and there is only one extra large face. We develop a sufficient condition for such an embedding to exist given any orientation of the configuration, and show that this condition is satisfied for all configurations on up to 19 points. We also show that there exists a configuration on 21 points which is not embeddable in any orientation. As a by-product, we give a revised table of numbers of configurations, correcting the published figure for 19 points. We give a number of open questions about embeddability of configurations on larger numbers of points.

Z_2-genus of graphs and minimum rank of partial symmetric matrices
The \emph{genus} $\mathrm{g}(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the minimum $g$ such that $G$ has an embedding on the orientable surface $M_g$ of genus $g$. A drawing of a graph on a surface is \emph{independently even} if every pair of nonadjacent edges in the drawing crosses an even number of times. The \emph{$\mathbb{Z}_2$-genus} of a graph $G$, denoted by $\mathrm{g}_0(G)$, is the minimum $g$ such that $G$ has an independently even drawing on $M_g$. By a result of Battle, Harary, Kodama and Youngs from 1962, the graph genus is additive over 2-connected blocks. In 2013, Schaefer and Štefankovič proved that the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-genus of a graph is additive over 2-connected blocks as well, and asked whether this result can be extended to so-called 2-amalgamations, as an analogue of results by Decker, Glover, Huneke, and Stahl for the genus. We give the following partial answer. If $G=G_1\cup G_2$, $G_1$ and $G_2$ intersect in two vertices $u$ and $v$, and $G-u-v$ has $k$ connected components (among which we count the edge $uv$ if present), then $|\mathrm{g}_0(G)-(\mathrm{g}_0(G_1)+\mathrm{g}_0(G_2))|\le k+1$. For complete bipartite graphs $K_{m,n}$, with $n\ge m\ge 3$, we prove that $\frac{\mathrm{g}_0(K_{m,n})}{\mathrm{g}(K_{m,n})}=1-O(\frac{1}{n})$. Similar results are proved also for the Euler $\mathbb{Z}_2$-genus. We express the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-genus of a graph using the minimum rank of partial symmetric matrices over $\mathbb{Z}_2$; a problem that might be of independent interest.

On curves intersecting at most once, II
We prove that on a closed, orientable surface of genus $g$, a set of simple loops with the property that no two are homotopic or intersect in more than $k$ points has cardinality $\lesssim_k g^{k+1} \log g$. The bound matches the size of the largest known construction to within a factor of $\sim_k \log g$. It generalizes an earlier result of the author, which treated the case $k=1$. The proof blends probabilistic ideas with covering space arguments related to the fact that surface groups are LERF.

A topological characterization of Gauss codes
A (smooth) embedding of a closed curve on the plane with finitely many intersections is said to be generic if each point of self-intersection is crossed exactly twice and at non-tangent angles. A finite word $ω$ where each character occurs twice is a Gauss code if it can be obtained as the sequence of traversed self-intersections of a generic plane embedding of a close curved $γ$. Then $γ$ is said to realize $ω$. We present a characterization of Gauss codes using Seifert cycles. The characterization is given by an algorithm that, given a Gauss code $ω$ as input, it outputs a combinatorial plane embedding of closed curve in linear time with respect to the number of characters of the word. The algorithm allows to find all the (combinatorial) embeddings of a closed curve in the plane that realize $ω$. The characterization involve two functions between graphs embedded on orientable surfaces, invertible of each other. One produces an embedding of the Seifert graph of the word (or paragraph), and the other is its inverse operation. These operations might be of independent interest.
The existence of square non-integer Heffter arrays
Published • View PublicationBIB
A Heffter array $H(n;k)$ is an $n\times n$ matrix such that each row and column contains $k$ filled cells, each row and column sum is divisible by $2nk+1$ and either $x$ or $-x$ appears in the array for each integer $1\leq x\leq nk$. Heffter arrays are useful for embedding the graph $K_{2nk+1}$ on an orientable surface. An integer Heffter array is one in which each row and column sum is $0$. Necessary and sufficient conditions (on $n$ and $k$) for the existence of an integer Heffter array $H(n;k)$ were verified by Archdeacon, Dinitz, Donovan and Yazıcı\ (2015) and Dinitz and Wanless (2017). In this paper we consider square Heffter arrays that are not necessarily integer. We show that such Heffter arrays exist whenever $3\leq k<n$.

Irregular triangulations of complete graphs on 12s vertices in orientable surfaces
We present a family of index 1 abelian current graphs whose derived embeddings can be modified into triangulations of $K_{12s}$ for $s \geq 4$. Our construction is significantly simpler than previous methods for finding genus embeddings of $K_{12s}$, which utilized either large index or nonabelian groups.

The $\mathbb{Z}_2$-genus of Kuratowski minors
Published in Discrete and Computational Geometry 68 (2022), Issue 2, 425-447 • View PublicationBIB
A drawing of a graph on a surface is independently even if every pair of nonadjacent edges in the drawing crosses an even number of times. The $\mathbb{Z}_2$-genus of a graph $G$ is the minimum $g$ such that $G$ has an independently even drawing on the orientable surface of genus $g$. An unpublished result by Robertson and Seymour implies that for every $t$, every graph of sufficiently large genus contains as a minor a projective $t\times t$ grid or one of the following so-called $t$-Kuratowski graphs: $K_{3,t}$, or $t$ copies of $K_5$ or $K_{3,3}$ sharing at most two common vertices. We show that the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-genus of graphs in these families is unbounded in $t$; in fact, equal to their genus. Together, this implies that the genus of a graph is bounded from above by a function of its $\mathbb{Z}_2$-genus, solving a problem posed by Schaefer and Štefankovič, and giving an approximate version of the Hanani-Tutte theorem on orientable surfaces. We also obtain an analogous result for Euler genus and Euler $\mathbb{Z}_2$-genus of graphs.
