Analogs of the van der Waerden and Tverberg conjectures for haffnians
We discuss here analogs of van der Waerden and Tverberg permanent conjectures for haffnians on the convex set of matrices whose extreme points are symmetric permutation matrices with zero diagonal.

For any finite Coxeter group W, we introduce two new objects: its cutting poset and its biHecke monoid. The cutting poset, constructed using a generalization of the notion of blocks in permutation matrices, almost forms a lattice on W. The construction of the biHecke monoid relies on the usual combinatorial model for the 0-Hecke algebra H_0(W), that is, for the symmetric group, the algebra (or monoid) generated by the elementary bubble sort operators. The authors previously introduced the Hecke group algebra, constructed as the algebra generated simultaneously by the bubble sort and antisort operators, and described its representation theory. In this paper, we consider instead the monoid generated by these operators. We prove that it admits |W| simple and projective modules. In order to construct the simple modules, we introduce for each w in W a combinatorial module T_w whose support is the interval [1,w]_R in right weak order. This module yields an algebra, whose representation theory generalizes that of the Hecke group algebra, with the combinatorics of descents replaced by that of blocks and of the cutting poset.

A set of linearly constrained permutation matrices are proposed for constructing a class of permutation codes. Making use of linear constraints imposed on the permutation matrices, we can formulate a minimum Euclidian distance decoding problem for the proposed class of permutation codes as a linear programming (LP) problem. The main feature of this class of permutation codes, called LP decodable permutation codes, is this LP decodability. It is demonstrated that the LP decoding performance of the proposed class of permutation codes is characterized by the vertices of the code polytope of the code. Two types of linear constraints are discussed; one is structured constraints and another is random constraints. The structured constraints such as pure involution lead to an efficient encoding algorithm. On the other hand, the random constraints enable us to use probabilistic methods for analyzing several code properties such as the average cardinality and the average weight distribution.

A spin model (for link invariants) is a square matrix $W$ which satisfies certain axioms. For a spin model $W$, it is known that $W^TW^{-1}$ is a permutation matrix, and its order is called the index of $W$. F. Jaeger and K. Nomura found spin models of index 2, by modifying the construction of symmetric spin models from Hadamard matrices. The aim of this paper is to give a construction of spin models of an arbitrary even index from any Hadamard matrix. In particular, we show that our spin models of indices a power of 2 are new.
Factoring Permutation Matrices Into a Product of Tridiagonal Matrices
Gilbert Strang posited that a permutation matrix of bandwidth $w$ can be written as a product of $N < 2w$ permutation matrices of bandwidth 1. A proof employing a greedy ``parallel bubblesort'' algorithm on the rows of the permutation matrix is detailed and further points of interest are elaborated.

We present a direct bijection between descending plane partitions with no special parts and permutation matrices. This bijection has the desirable property that the number of parts of the descending plane partition corresponds to the inversion number of the permutation. Additionally, the number of maximum parts in the descending plane partition corresponds to the position of the one in the last column of the permutation matrix. We also discuss the possible extension of this approach to finding a bijection between descending plane partitions and alternating sign matrices.

The usual combinatorial model for the 0-Hecke algebra of the symmetric group is to consider the algebra (or monoid) generated by the bubble sort operators. This construction generalizes to any finite Coxeter group W. The authors previously introduced the Hecke group algebra, constructed as the algebra generated simultaneously by the bubble sort and antisort operators, and described its representation theory.
In this paper, we consider instead the monoid generated by these operators. We prove that it has |W| simple and projective modules. In order to construct a combinatorial model for the simple modules, we introduce for each w in W a combinatorial module whose support is the interval [1,w] in right weak order. This module yields an algebra, whose representation theory generalizes that of the Hecke group algebra. This involves the introduction of a w-analogue of the combinatorics of descents of W and a generalization to finite Coxeter groups of blocks of permutation matrices.
On averages of randomized class functions on the symmetric groups and their asymptotics

The second author had previously obtained explicit generating functions for moments of characteristic polynomials of permutation matrices (n points). In this paper, we generalize many aspects of this situation. We introduce random shifts of the eigenvalues of the permutation matrices, in two different ways: independently or not for each subset of eigenvalues associated to the same cycle. We also consider vastly more general functions than the characteristic polynomial of a permutation matrix, by first finding an equivalent definition in terms of cycle-type of the permutation. We consider other groups than the symmetric group, for instance the alternating group and other Weyl groups. Finally, we compute some asymptotics results when n tends to infinity. This last result requires additional ideas: it exploits properties of the Feller coupling, which gives asymptotics for the lengths of cycles in permutations of many points.

Particles labelled $1,...,n$ are initially arranged in increasing order. Subsequently, each pair of neighboring particles that is currently in increasing order swaps according to a Poisson process of rate 1. We analyze the asymptotic behavior of this process as $n\to\infty$. We prove that the space--time trajectories of individual particles converge (when suitably scaled) to a certain family of random curves with two points of non-differentiability, and that the permutation matrix at a given time converges to a certain deterministic measure with absolutely continuous and singular parts. The absorbing state (where all particles are in decreasing order) is reached at time $(2+o(1))n$. The finishing times of individual particles converge to deterministic limits, with fluctuations asymptotically governed by the Tracy--Widom distribution.
Periodic Graphs

Let $X$ be a graph on $n$ vertices with with adjacency matrix $A$ and let $H(t)$ denote the matrix-valued function $\exp(iAt)$. If $u$ and $v$ are distinct vertices in $X$, we say perfect state transfer}from $u$ to $v$ occurs if there is a time $τ$ such that $|H(τ)_{u,v}|=1$. If $u\in V(X)$ and there is a time $\sg$ such that $|H(\sg)_{u,u}|=1$, we say $X$ is periodic at $u$ with period $\sg$. We show that if perfect state transfer from $u$ to $v$ occurs at time $τ$, then $X$ is periodic at both $u$ and $v$ with period $2τ$. We extend previous work by showing that a regular graph with at least four distinct eigenvalues is periodic with respect to some vertex if and only if its eigenvalues are integers. We show that, for a class of graphs $X$ including all vertex-transitive graphs, if perfect state transfer occurs at time $τ$, then $H(τ)$ is a scalar multiple of a permutation matrix of order two with no fixed points. Using certain Hadamard matrices, we construct a new infinite family of graphs on which perfect state transfer occurs.
Partial transpose of permutation matrices
The partial transpose of a block matrix M is the matrix obtained by transposing the blocks of M independently. We approach the notion of partial transpose from a combinatorial point of view. In this perspective, we solve some basic enumeration problems concerning the partial transpose of permutation matrices. More specifically, we count the number of permutations matrices which are equal to their partial transpose and the number of permutation matrices whose partial transpose is still a permutation. We solve these problems also when restricted to symmetric permutation matrices only.

A permutation polytope is the convex hull of a group of permutation matrices. In this paper we investigate the combinatorics of permutation polytopes and their faces. As applications we completely classify permutation polytopes in dimensions 2,3,4, and the corresponding permutation groups up to a suitable notion of equivalence. We also provide a list of combinatorial types of possibly occuring faces of permutation polytopes up to dimension four.
Equivalence of sparse circulants: the bipartite Ádám problem
We consider n-by-n circulant matrices having entries 0 and 1. Such matrices can be identified with sets of residues mod n, corresponding to the columns in which the top row contains an entry 1. Let A and B be two such matrices, and suppose that the corresponding residue sets S_A and S_B have size at most 3. We prove that the following are equivalent: (1) there are integers u,v mod n, with u a unit, such that S_A = uS_B + v; (2) there are permutation matrices P,Q such that A=PBQ. Our proof relies on some new results about vanishing sums of roots of unity. We give examples showing this result is not always true for denser circulants, as well as results showing it continues to hold in some situations. We also explain how our problem relates to the Adam problem on isomorphisms of circulant directed graphs.

We define the alternating sign matrix polytope as the convex hull of nxn alternating sign matrices and prove its equivalent description in terms of inequalities. This is analogous to the well known result of Birkhoff and von Neumann that the convex hull of the permutation matrices equals the set of all nonnegative doubly stochastic matrices. We count the facets and vertices of the alternating sign matrix polytope and describe its projection to the permutohedron as well as give a complete characterization of its face lattice in terms of modified square ice configurations. Furthermore we prove that the dimension of any face can be easily determined from this characterization.

A sorting network is a shortest path from 12...n to n...21 in the Cayley graph of S_n generated by nearest-neighbour swaps. We prove that for a uniform random sorting network, as n->infinity the space-time process of swaps converges to the product of semicircle law and Lebesgue measure. We conjecture that the trajectories of individual particles converge to random sine curves, while the permutation matrix at half-time converges to the projected surface measure of the 2-sphere. We prove that, in the limit, the trajectories are Holder-1/2 continuous, while the support of the permutation matrix lies within a certain octagon. A key tool is a connection with random Young tableaux.

We study here a standard next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) model of ballistic growth on one- and two-dimensional substrates focusing our analysis on the probability distribution function $P(M,L)$ of the number $M$ of maximal points (i.e., local ``peaks'') of growing surfaces. Our analysis is based on two central results: (i) the proof (presented here) of the fact that uniform one--dimensional ballistic growth process in the steady state can be mapped onto ''rise-and-descent'' sequences in the ensemble of random permutation matrices; and (ii) the fact, established in Ref. \cite{ov}, that different characteristics of ``rise-and-descent'' patterns in random permutations can be interpreted in terms of a certain continuous--space Hammersley--type process. For one--dimensional system we compute $P(M,L)$ exactly and also present explicit results for the correlation function characterizing the enveloping surface. For surfaces grown on 2d substrates, we pursue similar approach considering the ensemble of permutation matrices with long--ranged correlations. Determining exactly the first three cumulants of the corresponding distribution function, we define it in the scaling limit using an expansion in the Edgeworth series, and show that it converges to a Gaussian function as $L \to \infty$.

We present two extensions of the linear bound, due to Marcus and Tardos, on the number of 1's in an n by n 0-1 matrix avoiding a fixed permutation matrix. We first extend the linear bound to hypergraphs with ordered vertex sets and, using previous results of Klazar, we prove an exponential bound on the number of hypergraphs on n vertices which avoid a fixed permutation. This, in turn, solves various conjectures of Klazar as well as a conjecture of Branden and Mansour. We then extend the original Furedi-Hajnal problem from ordinary matrices to d-dimensional matrices and show that the number of 1's in a d-dimensional 0-1 matrix with side length n which avoids a d-dimensional permutation matrix is O(n^{d-1}).

The X-ray of a permutation is defined as the sequence of antidiagonal sums in the associated permutation matrix. X-rays of permutation are interesting in the context of Discrete Tomography since many types of integral matrices can be written as linear combinations of permutation matrices. This paper is an invitation to the study of X-rays of permutations from a combinatorial point of view. We present connections between these objects and nondecreasing differences of permutations, zero-sum arrays, decomposable permutations, score sequences of tournaments, queens' problems and rooks' problems.

Each group G of nxn permutation matrices has a corresponding permutation polytope, P(G):=conv(G) in R^{nxn}. We relate the structure of P(G) to the transitivity of G. In particular, we show that if G has t nontrivial orbits, then min{2t,floor(n/2)} is a sharp upper bound on the diameter of the graph of P(G); so if G is transitive, the diameter is at most 2. We also show that P(G) achieves its maximal dimension of (n-1)^2 precisely when G is 2-transitive. We then extend results of I. Pak on mixing times for a random walk on P(G). Our work depends on a new result for permutation groups involving writing permutations as products of indecomposable permutations.
Conjugacy in Permutation Representations of the Symmetric Group

Although the conjugacy classes of the general linear group are known, it is not obvious (from the canonic form of matrices) that two permutation matrices are similar if and only if they are conjugate as permutations in the symmetric group, i.e. that conjugacy classes of S_n do not unite under the natural representation. We prove this fact, and give its application to the enumeration of fixed points under a natural action of S_n x S_n. We also consider the permutation representations of S_n which arise from the action of S_n on k-tuples, and classify which of them unite conjugacy classes and which do not.
