In this paper we characterize the nonnegative irreducible tridiagonal matrices and their permutations, using certain entries in their primitive idempotents. Our main result is summarized as follows. Let $d$ denote a nonnegative integer. Let $A$ denote a matrix in $\matR$ and let $\{þ_i\}_{i=0}^d$ denote the roots of the characteristic polynomial of $A$. We say $A$ is multiplicity-free whenever these roots are mutually distinct and contained in $\R$. In this case $E_i$ will denote the primitive idempotent of $A$ associated with $þ_i$ $(0 \leq i \leq d)$. We say $A$ is symmetrizable whenever there exists an invertible diagonal matrix $Δ\in \matR$ such that $ΔA Δ^{-1}$ is symmetric. Let $Γ(A)$ denote the directed graph with vertex set $\{0,1,...,d\}$, where $i \rightarrow j$ whenever $i \neq j$ and $A_{ij} \neq 0$. Theorem: Assume that each entry of $A$ is nonnegative. Then the following are equivalent for $0 \leq s,t \leq d$: (i) The graph $Γ(A)$ is a bidirected path with endpoints $s$, $t$: (ii) The matrix $A$ is symmetrizable and multiplicity-free. Moreover the $(s,t)$-entry of $E_i$ times $(þ_i-þ_0)...(þ_i-þ_{i-1})(þ_i-þ_{i+1})...(þ_i-þ_d)$ is independent of $i$ for $0 \leq i \leq d$, and this common value is nonzero. Recently Kurihara and Nozaki obtained a theorem that characterizes the $Q$-polynomial property for symmetric association schemes. We view the above result as a linear algebraic generalization of their theorem.

Let $G$ be a group acting on a finite set $Ω$. Then $G$ acts on $Ω\times Ω$ by its entry-wise action and its orbits form the basis relations of a coherent configuration (or shortly scheme). Our concern is to consider what follows from the assumption that the number of orbits of $G$ on $Ω_i\times Ω_j$ is constant whenever $Ω_i$ and $Ω_j$ are orbits of $G$ on $Ω$. One can conclude from the assumption that the actions of $G$ on ${Ω_i}$'s have the same permutation character and are not necessarily equivalent. From this viewpoint one may ask how many inequivalent actions of a given group with the same permutation character there exist. In this article we will approach to this question by a purely combinatorial method in terms of schemes and investigate the following topics:
(i) balanced schemes and their central primitive idempotents, (ii) characterization of reduced balanced schemes.

Inspired by some intriguing examples, we study uniform association schemes and uniform coherent configurations, including cometric Q-antipodal association schemes. After a review of imprimitivity, we show that an imprimitive association scheme is uniform if and only if it is dismantlable, and we cast these schemes in the broader context of certain --- uniform --- coherent configurations. We also give a third characterization of uniform schemes in terms of the Krein parameters, and derive information on the primitive idempotents of such a scheme. In the second half of the paper, we apply these results to cometric association schemes. We show that each such scheme is uniform if and only if it is Q-antipodal, and derive results on the parameters of the subschemes and dismantled schemes of cometric Q-antipodal schemes. We revisit the correspondence between uniform indecomposable three-class schemes and linked systems of symmetric designs, and show that these are cometric Q-antipodal. We obtain a characterization of cometric Q-antipodal four-class schemes in terms of only a few parameters, and show that any strongly regular graph with a ("non-exceptional") strongly regular decomposition gives rise to such a scheme. Hemisystems in generalized quadrangles provide interesting examples of such decompositions. We finish with a short discussion of five-class schemes as well as a list of all feasible parameter sets for cometric Q-antipodal four-class schemes with at most six fibres and fibre size at most 2000, and describe the known examples. Most of these examples are related to groups, codes, and geometries.

We characterize that the image of the embedding of the $Q$-polynomial association scheme into eigenspace by primitive idempotent $E_1$ is a spherical $t$-design in terms of the Krein numbers. And we show that the strengths of $P$- and $Q$-polynomial schemes as spherical designs are bounded by constant.

We consider symmetry operators a from the group ring C[S_N] which act on the Hilbert space H of the 1D spin-1/2 Heisenberg magnetic ring with N sites. We investigate such symmetry operators a which are self-adjoint (in a sence defined in the paper) and which yield consequently observables of the Heisenberg model. We prove the following results: (i) One can construct a self-adjoint idempotent symmetry operator from every irreducible character of every subgroup of S_N. This leads to a big manifold of observables. In particular every commutation symmetry yields such an idempotent. (ii) The set of all generating idempotents of a minimal right ideal R of C[S_N] contains one and only one idempotent which ist self-adjoint. (iii) Every self-adjoint idempotent e can be decomposed into primitive idempotents e = f_1 + ... + f_k which are also self-adjoint and pairwise orthogonal. We give a computer algorithm for the calculation of such decompositions. Furthermore we present 3 additional algorithms which are helpful for the calculation of self-adjoint operators by means of discrete Fourier transforms of S_N. In our investigations we use computer calculations by means of our Mathematica packages PERMS and HRing.

We show that all primitive idempotents for the Brauer algebra B_n(w) can be found by evaluating a rational function in several variables which has the form of a product of R-matrix type factors. This provides an analogue of the fusion procedure for B_n(w).

Let $\F$ denote a field and let $V$ denote a vector space over $\F$ with finite positive dimension. We consider a pair of linear transformations $A:V \to V$ and $A^*:V \to V$ that satisfy the following conditions: (i) each of $A,A^*$ is diagonalizable; (ii) there exists an ordering $\lbrace V_i\rbrace_{i=0}^d$ of the eigenspaces of $A$ such that $A^* V_i \subseteq V_{i-1} + V_{i} + V_{i+1}$ for $0 \leq i \leq d$, where $V_{-1}=0$ and $V_{d+1}=0$; (iii) there exists an ordering $\lbrace V^*_i\rbrace_{i=0}^δ$ of the eigenspaces of $A^*$ such that $A V^*_i \subseteq V^*_{i-1} + V^*_{i} + V^*_{i+1}$ for $0 \leq i \leq δ$, where $V^*_{-1}=0$ and $V^*_{δ+1}=0$; (iv) there is no subspace $W$ of $V$ such that $AW \subseteq W$, $A^* W \subseteq W$, $W \neq 0$, $W \neq V$. We call such a pair a {\it tridiagonal pair} on $V$. It is known that $d=δ$, and for $0 \leq i \leq d$ the dimensions of $V_i, V^*_i, V_{d-i}, V^*_{d-i}$ coincide. Denote this common dimension by $ρ_i$ and call $A,A^*$ {\it sharp} whenever $ρ_0=1$. Let $T$ denote the $\F$-subalgebra of ${\rm End}_\F(V)$ generated by $A,A^*$. We show: (i) the center $Z(T)$ is a field whose dimension over $\F$ is $ρ_0$; (ii) the field $Z(T)$ is isomorphic to each of $E_0TE_0$, $E_dTE_d$, $E^*_0TE^*_0$, $E^*_dTE^*_d$, where $E_i$ (resp. $E^*_i$) is the primitive idempotent of $A$ (resp. $A^*$) associated with $V_i$ (resp. $V^*_i$); (iii) with respect to the $Z(T)$-vector space $V$ the pair $A,A^*$ is a sharp tridiagonal pair.

We consider a $Q$-polynomial distance-regular graph $Γ$ with vertex set $X$ and diameter $D \geq 3$. For $μ, ν\in \lbrace \downarrow, \uparrow \rbrace$ we define a direct sum decomposition of the standard module $V=\C X$, called the $(μ,ν)$--split decomposition. For this decomposition we compute the complex conjugate and transpose of the associated primitive idempotents. Now fix $b,β\in \mathbb C$ such that $b \neq 1$ and assume $Γ$ has classical parameters $(D,b,α,β)$ with $α= b-1$. Under this assumption Ito and Terwilliger displayed an action of the $q$-tetrahedron algebra $\boxtimes_q$ on the standard module of $Γ$. To describe this action they defined eight matrices in
$\hbox{Mat}_X(\mathbb C)$, called \begin{eqnarray*} \label{eq:list} A,\quad A^*,\quad B,\quad B^*, \quad K,\quad K^*,\quad Φ,\quad Ψ. \end{eqnarray*}
For each matrix in the above list we compute the transpose and complex conjugate. Using this information we compute the transpose and complex conjugate for each generator of $\boxtimes_q$ on $V$.

Let $Γ$ denote a distance-regular graph with diameter $D\geq 3$ and Bose-Mesner algebra $M$. For $θ\in C\cup \infty$ we define a 1 dimensional subspace of $M$ which we call $M(θ)$. If $θ\in C$ then $M(θ)$ consists of those $Y$ in $M$ such that $(A-θI)Y\in C A_D$, where $A$ (resp. $A_D$) is the adjacency matrix (resp. $D$th distance matrix) of $Γ.$ If $θ= \infty$ then $M(θ)= C A_D$. By a {\it pseudo primitive idempotent} for $θ$ we mean a nonzero element of $M(θ)$. We use pseudo primitive idempotents to describe the irreducible modules for the Terwilliger algebra, that are thin with endpoint one.

We show that the symmetry classes of torsion-free covariant derivatives $\nabla T$ of r-times covariant tensor fields T can be characterized by Littlewood-Richardson products $σ[1]$ where $σ$ is a representation of the symmetric group $S_r$ which is connected with the symmetry class of T. If $σ= [λ]$ is irreducible then $σ[1]$ has a multiplicity free reduction $[λ][1] = \sum [μ]$ and all primitive idempotents belonging to that sum can be calculated from a generating idempotent e of the symmetry class of T by means of the irreducible characters or of a discrete Fourier transform of $S_{r+1}$. We apply these facts to derivatives $\nabla S$, $\nabla A$ of symmetric or alternating tensor fields. The symmetry classes of the differences $\nabla S - sym(\nabla S)$ and $\nabla A - alt(\nabla A)$ are characterized by Young frames (r, 1) and (2, 1^{r-1}), respectively. However, while the symmetry class of $\nabla A - alt(\nabla A)$ can be generated by Young symmetrizers of (2, 1^{r-1}), no Young symmetrizer of (r, 1) generates the symmetry class of $\nabla S - sym(\nabla S)$. Furthermore we show in the case r = 2 that $\nabla S - sym(\nabla S)$ and $\nabla A - alt(\nabla A)$ can be applied in generator formulas of algebraic covariant derivative curvature tensors. For certain symbolic calculations we used the Mathematica packages Ricci and PERMS.

Let Y denote a symmetric association scheme which is Q-polynomial with respect to an ordering E_0,...,E_D of the primitive idempotents. Bannai and Ito conjectured that the associated sequence of multiplicities m_0,...,m_D is unimodal. We prove that if Y is dual-thin in the sense of Terwilliger, then the sequence of multiplicities satisfies m_i <= m_{i+1} and m_i <= m_{D-i} for i < D/2.
