Convolution-multiplication identities for Tutte polynomials of matroids

We give a general multiplication-convolution identity for the multivariate and bivariate rank generating polynomial of a matroid. The bivariate rank generating polynomial is transformable to and from the Tutte polynomial by simple algebraic operations. Several identities, almost all already known in some form, are specializations of this identity. Combinatorial or probabilistic interpretations are given for the specialized identities.

We introduce PWP a method for counting indirect influences and compare it with three well-known methods. We provide combinatorial as well as probabilistic interpretation for the PWP method.
Counting nondecreasing integer sequences that lie below a barrier

Given a barrier $0 \leq b_0 \leq b_1 \leq ...$, let $f(n)$ be the number of nondecreasing integer sequences $0 \leq a_0 \leq a_1 \leq ... \leq a_n$ for which $a_j \leq b_j$ for all $0 \leq j \leq n$. Known formulæfor $f(n)$ include an $n \times n$ determinant whose entries are binomial coefficients (Kreweras, 1965) and, in the special case of $b_j = rj+s$, a short explicit formula (Proctor, 1988, p.320). A relatively easy bivariate recursion, decomposing all sequences according to $n$ and $a_n$, leads to a bivariate generating function, then a univariate generating function, then a linear recursion for $\{f(n) \}$. Moreover, the coefficients of the bivariate generating function have a probabilistic interpretation, leading to an analytic inequality which is an identity for certain values of its argument.

We give an alternative, combinatorial/geometrical evaluation of a class of improper sinc integrals studied by the Borweins. A probabilistic interpretation is also noted and used to shed light on a related combinatorial identity.
Symmetric inclusion-exclusion

One form of the inclusion-exclusion principle asserts that if A and B are functions of finite sets then A(S) is the sum of B(T) over all subsets T of S if and only if B(S) is the sum of (-1)^|S-T| A(T) over all subsets T of S.
If we replace B(S) with (-1)^|S| B(S), we get a symmetric form of inclusion-exclusion: A(S) is the sum of (-1)^|T| B(T) over all subsets T of S if and only if B(S) is the sum of (-1)^|T| A(T) over all subsets T of S.
We study instances of symmetric inclusion-exclusion in which the functions A and B have combinatorial or probabilistic interpretations. In particular, we study cases related to the Polya-Eggenberger urn model in which A(S) and B(S) depend only on the cardinality of S.
Applications of Symmetric Functions to Cycle and Subsequence Structure after Shuffles

Using symmetric function theory, we study the cycle structure and increasing subsequence structure of permutations after various shuffling methods, emphasizing the role of Cauchy type identities and the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence. One consequence is a cycle index for riffle shuffles when one deals from the bottom of the deck; conclusions are drawn concerning the distribution of fixed points and the asymptotic distribution of cycle structure. In studying cycle structure of unimodal permutations and their generalizations we are led to an interesting variation of the RSK correspondence. This yields a probabilistic interpretation of a Schur-type function.

The eigenvalue spacing of a uniformly chosen random finite unipotent matrix in its permutation action on lines is studied. We obtain bounds for the mean number of eigenvalues lying in a fixed arc of the unit circle and offer an approach toward other asymptotics. For the case of all unipotent matrices, the proof gives a probabilistic interpretation to identities of Macdonald from symmetric function theory. For the case of upper triangular matrices over a finite field, connections between symmetric function theory and a probabilistic growth algorithm of Borodin emerge..
Counting semisimple orbits of finite Lie algebras by genus

The adjoint action of a finite group of Lie type on its Lie algebra is studied. A simple formula is conjectured for the number of split semisimple orbits of a given genus. This conjecture is proved for type A, and partial results are obtained for other types. For type A a probabilistic interpretation is given in terms of card shuffling.
