We consider quivers/skew-symmetric matrices under the action of mutation (in the cluster algebra sense). We classify those which are isomorphic to their own mutation via a cycle permuting all the vertices, and give families of quivers which have higher periodicity. The periodicity means that sequences given by recurrence relations arise in a natural way from the associated cluster algebras. We present a number of interesting new families of non-linear recurrences, necessarily with the Laurent property, of both the real line and the plane, containing integrable maps as special cases. In particular, we show that some of these recurrences can be linearised and, with certain initial conditions, give integer sequences which contain all solutions of some particular Pell equations. We extend our construction to include recurrences with parameters, giving an explanation of some observations made by Gale. Finally, we point out a connection between quivers which arise in our classification and those arising in the context of quiver gauge theories.
The continuum limit of critical random graphs

We consider the Erdos-Renyi random graph G(n,p) inside the critical window, that is when p=1/n+ lambda*n^{-4/3}, for some fixed lambda in R. Then, as a metric space with the graph distance rescaled by n^{-1/3}, the sequence of connected components G(n,p) converges towards a sequence of continuous compact metric spaces. The result relies on a bijection between graphs and certain marked random walks, and the theory of continuum random trees. Our result gives access to the answers to a great many questions about distances in critical random graphs. In particular, we deduce that the diameter of G(n,p) rescaled by n^{-1/3} converges in distribution to an absolutely continuous random variable with finite mean.

A subspace arrangement defined by intersections of hyperplanes of the braid arrangement can be encoded by an edge colored hypergraph. It turns out that the characteristic polynomial of this type of subspace arrangement is given by a generalized chromatic polynomial of the associated edge colored hypergraph. The main result of this paper supplies a sufficient condition for the existence of non-trivial Massey products of the subspace arrangements complex complement. This is accomplished by studying a spectral sequence associated to the Lie coalgebras of Sinha and Walter.

We introduce a canonical form for near-normal sequences NN(n), and using it we enumerate the equivalence classes of such sequences for even n up to 30. These sequences are needed for Yang multiplication in the construction of longer T-sequences from base sequences.
Exterior depth and exterior generic annihilator numbers
We study the exterior depth of an $E$-module and its exterior generic annihilator numbers. For the exterior depth of a squarefree $E$-module we show how it relates to the symmetric depth of the corresponding $S$-module and classify those simplicial complexes having a particular exterior depth in terms of their exterior shifting. We define exterior annihilator numbers analogously to the annihilator numbers over the polynomial ring introduced by Trung and Conca, Herzog and Hibi. In addition to a combinatorial interpretation of the annihilator numbers we show how they are related to the symmetric Betti numbers and the Cartan-Betti numbers, respectively. We finally conclude with an example which shows that neither the symmetric nor the exterior generic annihilator numbers are minimal among the annihilator numbers with respect to a sequence.

We answer the following question of R. L. Graham: What is the discrepancy of the lexicographically-least binary de Bruijn sequence? Here, "discrepancy" refers to the maximum (absolute) difference between the number of ones and the number of zeros in any initial segment of the sequence. We show that the answer is $Θ(2^n \log n/n)$.

In this paper, we obtain a characterization of short normal sequences over a finite Abelian p-group, thus answering positively a conjecture of Gao for a variety of such groups. Our main result is deduced from a theorem of Alon, Friedland and Kalai, originally proved so as to study the existence of regular subgraphs in almost regular graphs. In the special case of elementary p-groups, Gao's conjecture is solved using Alon's Combinatorial Nullstellensatz. To conclude, we show that, assuming every integer satisfies Property B, this conjecture holds in the case of finite Abelian groups of rank two.
Paths and partitions: combinatorial descriptions of the parafermionic states

The Z_k parafermionic conformal field theories, despite the relative complexity of their modes algebra, offer the simplest context for the study of the bases of states and their different combinatorial representations. Three bases are known. The classic one is given by strings of the fundamental parafermionic operators whose sequences of modes are in correspondence with restricted partitions with parts at distance k-1 differing at least by 2. Another basis is expressed in terms of the ordered modes of the k-1 different parafermionic fields, which are in correspondence with the so-called multiple partitions. Both types of partitions have a natural (Bressoud) path representation. Finally, a third basis, formulated in terms of different paths, is inherited from the solution of the restricted solid-on-solid model of Andrews-Baxter-Forrester. The aim of this work is to review, in a unified and pedagogical exposition, these four different combinatorial representations of the states of the Z_k parafermionic models.
The first part of this article presents the different paths and partitions and their bijective relations; it is purely combinatorial, self-contained and elementary; it can be read independently of the conformal-field-theory applications. The second part links this combinatorial analysis with the bases of states of the Z_k parafermionic theories. With the prototypical example of the parafermionic models worked out in detail, this analysis contributes to fix some foundations for the combinatorial study of more complicated theories. Indeed, as we briefly indicate in ending, generalized versions of both the Bressoud and the Andrews-Baxter-Forrester paths emerge naturally in the description of the minimal models.
The $h$-vectors of 1-dimensional Matroid Complexes and a Conjecture of Stanley
A matroid complex is a pure complex such that every restriction is again pure. It is a long-standing open problem to classify all possible $h$-vectors of such complexes. In the case when the complex has dimension 1 we completely resolve this question. We also prove the 1-dimensional case of a conjecture of Stanley that all matroid $h$-vectors are pure ${O}$-sequences. Finally, we completely characterize the Stanley-Reisner ideals of 1-dimensional matroid complexes.

In this paper, we study the interaction of an antisense RNA and its target mRNA, based on the model introduced by Alkan {\it et al.} (Alkan {\it et al.}, J. Comput. Biol., Vol:267--282, 2006). Our main results are the derivation of the partition function
\cite{Backhofen} (Chitsaz {\it et al.}, Bioinformatics, to appear, 2009), based on the concept of tight-structure and the computation of the base pairing probabilities. This paper contains the folding algorithm {\sf rip} which computes the partition function as well as the base pairing probabilities in $O(N^4M^2)+O(N^2M^4)$ time and $O(N^2M^2)$ space, where $N,M$ denote the lengths of the interacting sequences.
Note on a Conjecture of Graham

An old conjecture of Graham stated that if $n$ is a prime and $S$ is a sequence of $n$ terms from the cyclic group $C_n$ such that all (nontrivial) zero-sum subsequences have the same length, then $S$ must contain at most two distinct terms. In 1976, Erdős and Szemeredi gave a proof of the conjecture for sufficiently large primes $n$. However, the proof was complicated enough that the details for small primes were never worked out. Both in the paper of Erdős and Szemeredi and in a later survey by Erdős and Graham, the complexity of the proof was lamented. Recently, a new proof, valid even for non-primes $n$, was given by Gao, Hamidoune and Wang, using Savchev and Chen's recently proved structure theorem for zero-sum free sequences of long length in $C_n$. However, as this is a fairly involved result, they did not believe it to be the simple proof sought by Erdős, Graham and Szemeredi. In this paper, we give a short proof of the original conjecture that uses only the Cauchy-Davenport Theorem and pigeonhole principle, thus perhaps qualifying as a simple proof. Replacing the use of the Cauchy-Davenport Theorem with the Devos-Goddyn-Mohar Theorem, we obtain an alternate proof, albeit not as simple, of the non-prime case. Additionally, our method yields an exhaustive list detailing the precise structure of $S$ and works for an arbitrary finite abelian group, though the only non-cyclic group for which this is nontrivial is $C_2\oplus C_{2m}$.

Let $G$ be a finite abelian group and let $A\subseteq \mathbb{Z}$ be nonempty. Let $D_A(G)$ denote the minimal integer such that any sequence over $G$ of length $D_A(G)$ must contain a nontrivial subsequence $s_1... s_r$ such that $\sum_{i=1}^{r}w_is_i=0$ for some $w_i\in A$. Let $E_A(G)$ denote the minimal integer such that any sequence over $G$ of length $E_A(G)$ must contain a subsequence of length $|G|$, $s_1... s_{|G|}$, such that $\sum_{i=1}^{|G|}w_is_i=0$ for some $w_i\in A$. In this paper, we show that $$E_A(G)=|G|+D_A(G)-1,$$ confirming a conjecture of Thangadurai and the expectations of Adhikari, et al. The case $A=\{1\}$ is an older result of Gao, and our result extends much partial work done by Adhikari, Rath, Chen, David, Urroz, Xia, Yuan, Zeng and Thangadurai. Moreover, under a suitable multiplicity restriction, we show that not only can zero be represented in this manner, but an entire nontrivial subgroup, and if this subgroup is not the full group $G$, we obtain structural information for the sequence generalizing another non-weighted result of Gao. Our full theorem is valid for more general $n$-sums with $n\geq |G|$, in addition to the case $n=|G|$.
Knights, spies, games and ballot sequences

This paper presents a solution to the Knights and Spies Problem: In a room there are n people, each labelled with a unique number between 1 and n. A person may either be a knight or a spy. Knights always tell the truth, while spies may either lie or tell the truth, as they see fit. Each person in the room knows the identity of everyone else. Apart from this, all that is known is that strictly more knights than spies are present. Asking only questions of the form: `Person i, what is the identity of person j?', what is the least number of questions that will guarantee to find the true identities of all n people? The analysis of a related two-player game is critical to the proof. Some probabilistic aspects are also explored. The paper ends by presenting three open questions concerned with generalisations of the problem.
Deposition and Extension Approach to Find Longest Common Subsequence for Multiple Sequences

The problem of finding the longest common subsequence (LCS) for a set of sequences is a very interesting and challenging problem in computer science. This problem is NP-complete, but because of its importance, many heuristic algorithms have been proposed, such as Long Run algorithm and Expansion algorithm.
However, the performance of many current heuristic algorithms deteriorates fast when the number of sequences and sequence length increase. In this paper, we have proposed a post process heuristic algorithm for the LCS problem, the Deposition and Extension algorithm (DEA). This algorithm first generates common subsequence by the process of sequences deposition, and then extends this common subsequence. The algorithm is proven to generate Common Subsequences (CSs) with guaranteed lengths. The experiments show that the results of DEA algorithm are better than those of Long Run and Expansion algorithm, especially on many long sequences. The algorithm also has superior efficiency both in time and space.
Multiple recurrence and convergence for Hardy sequences of polynomial growth

We study the limiting behavior of multiple ergodic averages involving sequences of integers that satisfy some regularity conditions and have polynomial growth. We show that for "typical" choices of Hardy field functions $a(t)$ with polynomial growth, the averages $\frac{1}{N}\sum_{n=1}^N f_1(T^{[a(n)]}x)\cdot...\cdot f_\ell(T^{\ell [a(n)]}x)$ converge in the mean and we determine their limit. For example, this is the case if $a(t)=t^{3/2}, t\log{t},$ or $t^2+(\log{t})^2$. Furthermore, if ${a_1(t),...,a_\ell(t)}$ is a "typical" family of logarithmico-exponential functions of polynomial growth, then for every ergodic system, the averages $\frac{1}{N}\sum_{n=1}^N f_1(T^{[a_1(n)]}x)\cdot...\cdot f_\ell(T^{[a_\ell(n)]}x)$ converge in the mean to the product of the integrals of the corresponding functions. For example, this is the case if the functions $a_i(t)$ are given by different positive fractional powers of $t$. We deduce several results in combinatorics. We show that if $a(t)$ is a non-polynomial Hardy field function with polynomial growth, then every set of integers with positive upper density contains arithmetic progressions of the form ${m,m+[a(n)],...,m+\ell[a(n)]}$. Under suitable assumptions we get a related result concerning patterns of the form ${m, m+[a_1(n)],..., m+[a_\ell(n)]}.$

Let $n$ be a positive integer and let $S$ be a sequence of $n$ integers in the interval $[0,n-1]$. If there is an $r$ such that any nonempty subsequence with sum $\equiv 0$ $\pmod n$ has length $=r,$ then $S$ has at most two distinct values. This proves a conjecture of R. L. Graham. A previous result of P. Erdős and E. Szemerédi shows the validity of this conjecture if $n$ is a large prime number.
