A refinement of the edge theorem for order and chain polytopes
For a finite poset, we partition the edges of the order polytope and of the chain polytope into classes indexed by the connected convex subsets of the poset, and we establish that corresponding classes have the same cardinality. This yields a closed formula for the common number of edges, and it identifies the bijection of Hibi, Li, Sahara and Shikama, given by them through an explicit formula, as a disjoint union of simple bijections between corresponding classes, which explains why it is a bijection and how it acts on edge directions and lengths. As consequences, the two polytopes have equally many edge directions, with matching multiplicities; the chain polytope has at least as many edges parallel to each coordinate subspace as the order polytope; and the edge lengths of the chain polytope are dominated by those of the order polytope. Strict inequality occurs in the last two comparisons exactly when the poset contains a three-element chain. We discuss implications for linear and convex combinatorial optimization over ideals and antichains. We also express the number of edges in terms of the comparability graph, in a form that extends to stable-set polytopes of arbitrary graphs, give a recursion for series-parallel posets and closed formulas for layered, zigzag and crown posets, characterize the distributive lattices for which the two polytopes are unimodularly equivalent, and demonstrate that, although the two polytopes have the same number of edges, either one can have the larger diameter, by an arbitrary amount; on the other hand, both diameters are bounded by the width of the poset, and they coincide for ordinal sums, series-parallel posets, and zigzag and crown posets.
On the Tutte polynomial of series-parallel posets
The Tutte polynomial is a bivariate polynomial that has been extensively studied in graph and matroid theory. Gordon was the first to study the Tutte polynomial $T(P;x,y)$ of the greedoid induced by a poset $P$, including the special case of series-parallel posets. In particular, Gordon and McMahon conjectured that, for any two series-parallel posets $P$ and $Q$, the equality $T(P;x,y)=T(Q;x,y)$ holds if and only if $P\cong Q$. In studying this conjecture, Gordon introduced a subclass $\mathcal{P}$ of series-parallel posets and proved that this equivalence holds for all $P,Q\in\mathcal{P}$. In this paper, we introduce a new subclass $\mathrm H$ of series-parallel posets and prove that $\mathcal P\subseteq\mathrm H$. Moreover, we show that, for every $P\in\mathrm H$ and every $Q\in\mathrm{SP}$, the equality $T(P;x,y)=T(Q;x,y)$ holds if and only if $P\cong Q$, thereby extending Gordon's result.
The Generalized Interval Polynomial of a Poset
For any finite poset we define a generating polynomial counting upsets, downsets, and their intersection. We investigate the behaviour of this polynomial with respect to poset operations, show that it distinguishes series-parallel posets, and comment on connections to the causal set approach to quantum gravity.
Shuffle series

We apply operad theory to enumerative combinatorics in order to count the number of shuffles between series-parallel posets and chains. We work with three types of shuffles, two of them noncommutative, for example a left deck-divider shuffle $A$ between $P$ and $Q$ is a shuffle of the posets in which, on every maximal chain $m\subset A$, the minimum and maximum elements belong to $P$ and no two consecutive points of $Q$ appear consecutively on $m$. The number of left deck-divider shuffles of $P$ and $Q$ differ from the number of left deck-divider shuffles of $Q$ and $P$.
The generating functions whose $n$ coefficient counts shuffles between a poset $P$ and $1<2<\cdots<n$ are called shuffle series. We explain how shuffle series are isomorphic to order series as algebras over the operad of series parallel posets.
The weak and strict order polynomials are well known in the literature. At the level of generating series, with the theory of sets with a negative number of elements, we introduce a third order series and prove a theorem in the style of Stanley's Reciprocity Theorem compatible with the structure of algebras over the operad of finite posets.
We conclude by describing the relationship of our work with the combinatorial properties of the operadic tensor product of free trees operads.

We study generating functions of strict and non-strict order polynomials of series-parallel posets, called order series. These order series are closely related to Ehrhart series and h*-polynomials of the associated order polytopes. We explain how they can be understood as algebras over a certain operad of posets. Our main results are based on the fact that the order series of chains form a basis in the space of order series. This allows to reduce the search space of an algorithm that finds for a given power series f, if possible, a poset P such that f is the generating function of the order polynomial of P. In terms of Ehrhart theory of order polytopes, the coordinates with respect to this basis describe the number of (internal) simplices in the canonical triangulation of the order polytope of P. Furthermore, we derive a new proof of the reciprocity theorem of Stanley. As an application, we find new identities for binomial coefficients and for finite partitions that allow for empty sets, and we describe properties of the negative hypergeometric distribution.

We introduce iposets---posets with interfaces---equipped with a novel gluing composition along interfaces and the standard parallel composition. We study their basic algebraic properties as well as the hierarchy of gluing-parallel posets generated from singletons by finitary applications of the two compositions. We show that not only series-parallel posets, but also interval orders, which seem more interesting for modelling concurrent and distributed systems, can be generated, but not all posets. Generating posets is also important for constructing free algebras for concurrent semirings and Kleene algebras that allow compositional reasoning about such systems.
Cayley posets

We introduce Cayley posets as posets arising naturally from pairs $S<T$ of semigroups, much in the same way that Cayley graph arises from a (semi)group and a subset. We show that Cayley posets are a common generalization of several known classes of posets, e.g. posets of numerical semigroups (with torsion) and more generally affine semigroups. Furthermore, we give Sabidussi-type characterizations for Cayley posets and for several subclasses in terms of their endomorphism monoid. We show that large classes of posets are Cayley posets, e.g., series-parallel posets and (generalizations of) join-semilattices, but also provide examples of posets which cannot be represented this way. Finally, we characterize (locally finite, with a finite number of atoms) auto-equivalent posets - a class that generalizes a recently introduced notion for numerical semigroups - as those posets coming from a finitely generated submonoid of an abelian group.

The $(P, ω)$-partition generating function of a labeled poset $(P, ω)$ is a quasisymmetric function enumerating certain order-preserving maps from $P$ to $\mathbb{Z}^+$. We study the expansion of this generating function in the recently introduced type 1 quasisymmetric power sum basis $\{ψ_α\}$. Using this expansion, we show that connected, naturally labeled posets have irreducible $P$-partition generating functions. We also show that series-parallel posets are uniquely determined by their partition generating functions. We conclude by giving a combinatorial interpretation for the coefficients of the $ψ_α$-expansion of the $(P, ω)$-partition generating function akin to the Murnaghan-Nakayama rule.

In this paper we give an algorithm to determine, for any given suborder closed class of series-parallel posets, a structure theorem for the class. We refer to these structure theorems as structural descriptions.

We refine a technique used in a paper by Schur on real-rooted polynomials. This amounts to an extension of a theorem of Wagner on Hadamard products of Toeplitz matrices. We also apply our results to polynomials for which the Neggers-Stanley Conjecture is known to hold. More precisely, we settle interlacing properties for $E$-polynomials of series-parallel posets and column-strict labelled Ferrers posets.
