On the Squared Distance Matrix of a Starlike Block Graph
Let $D(G)$ be the distance matrix of a simple connected graph $G$. The Hadamard product $D(G)~\circ~ D(G)$ is called the squared distance matrix of $G$, and is denoted by $Δ(G)$. A simple connected graph is called a starlike block graph if it has a central cut vertex, and each of its blocks is a complete graph. Let $ \mathcal{S}(n_1, n_2, \ldots, n_b)$ be the starlike block graph with blocks $K_{n_1+1}, K_{n_2+1}, \ldots, K_{n_b+1} $ on $n=1 + \sum_{i=1}^b n_i$ vertices. In this article, we compute the determinant of $Δ( \mathcal{S}(n_1, n_2, \ldots, n_b))$ and find its inverse as a rank-one perturbation of a positive semidefinite Laplacian-like matrix $\mathcal{L}$ with rank $n-1$. We also investigate the inertia of $Δ( \mathcal{S}(n_1, n_2, \ldots, n_b))$. Furthermore, for a fixed value of $ n $ and $ b $, we determine the extremal graphs that uniquely attain the maximum and minimum spectral radius of the squared distance matrix for starlike block graphs on $ n $ vertices and $ b $ blocks.
On Legendre Cordial Labeling of Some Graphs Under Graph Opearations
For a simple connected graph $G$ of order $n$, a bijective function $f:V(G)\to\{1,2,\cdots,n\}$ is said to be a Legendre cordial labeling modulo $p$, where $p$ is an odd prime, if the induced function $f_p^*:E(G)\to \{0,1\}$, defined by $f_p^*(uv)=0$ whenever $([f(u)+f(v)]/p)=-1$ or $f(u)+f(v)\equiv 0(\text{mod }p)$, and $f_p^*(uv)=1$ whenever $([f(u)+f(v)]/p)=1$, satisfies the condition $|e_{f_p^*}(0)-e_{f_p^*}(1)|\leq 1$ where $e_{f_p^*}(i)$ is the number of edges with label $i$ ($i=0,1$). This paper investigates the Legendre cordial labeling of graphs obtained through various operations: join, corona, lexicographic product, cartesian product, tensor product, and strong product.
On Legendre Cordial Labeling of Complete Graphs
Let $p$ be an odd prime. For a simple connected graph $G$ of order $n$, a bijective function $f:V(G)\to\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$ is said to be a Legendre cordial labeling modulo $p$ if the induced function $f_p^*:E(G)\to \{0,1\}$, defined by $f_p^* (uv)=0$ whenever $([f(u)+f(v)]/p)=-1$ or $f(u)+f(v)\equiv 0(\text{mod } p)$ and $f_p^* (uv)=1$ whenever $([f(u)+f(v)]/p)=1$, satisfies the condition $|e_{f_p^*}(0)-e_{f_p^*}(1)|\leq 1$ where $e_{f_p^*}(i)$ is the number of edges with label $i$ ($i=0,1$). This paper explores the characterization of the Legendre cordial labeling modulo $p$ of the complete graph $K_n$ using the concept of Legendre graph.
Non-existence of co-spectral simple connected graphs with small number of edges
We prove that if the number of edges does not exceed 7 then the asymptotics of eigenvalues of the Dirichlet problem uniquely determine the shape of the graph.
Quadratic Embedding Constants of Cartesian Products and Joins of Graphs
The quadratic embedding constant (QEC) of a finite, simple, connected graph originated from the classical work of Schoenberg [Ann. of Math., 1935] and [Trans. Amer. Math. Soc., 1938] on Euclidean distance geometry. In this article, we study the QEC of graphs in terms of two graph operations: the Cartesian product and the join of graphs. We derive a general formula for the QEC of the join of an arbitrary graph with a regular graph and with a complete multipartite graph. We then provide quadratic embedding constants for the Cartesian product of an arbitrary graph $G$ with a complete graph and with a complete bipartite graph in terms of QEC$(G)$.
When Are Standard Graph Products Isomorphic?
This article investigates the isomorphism problem for graphs derived from the four standard graph products: Cartesian, Kronecker (direct), strong, and lexicographic product. We provide a complete characterization of all simple connected graphs for which their corresponding products are isomorphic. As a by-product, we identify a novel family of non-distance-regular graphs that possess fewer than d+1 distinct distance eigenvalues, where d represents the diameter of the graph. This result offers a new perspective on Problem 4.3 posed in [2], moving beyond the current approaches.
Intertwining local (adjacency) metric dimension with the clique number of a graph
Let $G$ be a simple connected graph with order $ n(G)$, local metric dimension $ {\rm dim}_l(G)$, local adjacency metric dimension $ {\rm dim}_{A,l}(G)$, and clique number $ ω(G)$, where $G\not\cong K_{n(G)}$ and $ω(G)\geq3$. It is proved that $ {\rm dim}_{A,l}(G) \leq \left\lfloor \left(\frac{ω(G) - 2}{ω(G) - 1}\right)n(G)\right\rfloor$. Consequently, the conjecture asserting that the latter expression is an upper bound for ${\rm dim}_l(G)$ is confirmed. It is important to note that there are infinitely many graphs that satisfy the equalities.
Unexpectedly, a symmetry on unlabeled graphs
We exhibit the joint symmetric distribution of the following two parameters on the set of unlabeled, simple, connected graphs with $n$ vertices. The first parameter is the maximal number of leaves attached to a vertex. The second parameter is the size of the largest set of vertices sharing the same closed neighborhood minus $1$.
Apparently, this is the first example of a natural, non-trivial equidistribution of graph parameters on unlabeled connected graphs on a fixed set of vertices.
Our proof is enumerative, using the theory of species. Exhibiting an explicit bijection interchanging the two parameters remains an open problem.
Hexagonal and k-hexagonal graph's normalized Laplacian spectrum and applications
Substituting each edge of a simple connected graph $G$ by a path of length 1 and $k$ paths of length 5 generates the $k$-hexagonal graph $H^k(G)$. Iterative graph $H^k_n(G)$ is produced when the preceding constructions are repeated $n$ times. According to the graph structure, we obtain a set of linear equations, and derive the entirely normalized Laplacian spectrum of $H^k_n(G)$ when $k = 1$ and $k \geqslant 2$ respectively by analyzing the structure of the solutions of these linear equations. We find significant formulas to calculate the Kemeny's constant, multiplicative degree-Kirchhoff index and number of spanning trees of $H^k_n(G)$ as applications.
From semi-total to equitable total colorings
Independently posed by Behzad and Vizing, the Total Coloring Conjecture asserts that the total chromatic number of a simple connected graph $G$ is either $Δ(G)+1$ or $Δ(G)+2$, where $Δ(G)$ is the largest degree of any vertex of $G$.
To decide whether a cubic graph $G$ has total chromatic number $Δ(G)+1$, even for bipartite cubic graphs, is NP-hard. The resulting problems and research persist even for total colorings that are equitable, namely with the cardinalities of the color classes differing at most by 1. Williams and Holroyd gave a new condition to solve total coloring problems via the introduction of semi-total colorings. We focus on how to obtain equitable total colorings of symmetric cubic graphs and cage graphs by means of a variation of Kempe'a 1879 graph-coloring algorithm. Such variation takes semi-total colorings to equitable ones.
3-path-connectivity of bubble-sort star graphs
Let $G$ be a simple connected graph with vertex set $V(G)$ and edge set $E(G)$. Let $T$ be a subset of $ V(G)$ with cardinality $|T|\geq2$. A path connecting all vertices of $T$ is called a $T$-path of $G$. Two $T$-paths $P_i$ and $P_j$ are said to be internally disjoint if $V(P_i)\cap V(P_j)=T$ and $E(P_i)\cap E(P_j)=\emptyset$. Denote by $π_G(T)$ the maximum number of internally disjoint $T$- paths in G. Then for an integer $\ell$ with $\ell\geq2$, the $\ell$-path-connectivity $π_\ell(G)$ of $G$ is formulated as $\min\{π_G(T)\,|\,T\subseteq V(G)$ and $|T|=\ell\}$. In this paper, we study the $3$-path-connectivity of $n$-dimensional bubble-sort star graph $BS_n$. By deeply analyzing the structure of $BS_n$, we show that $π_3(BS_n)=\lfloor\frac{3n}2\rfloor-3$, for any $n\geq3$.
Weak and strong local irregularity of digraphs
Local Irregularity Conjecture states that every simple connected graph, except special cacti, can be decomposed into at most three locally irregular graphs, i.e., graphs in which adjacent vertices have different degrees. The connected minimization problem, finding the minimum number $k$ such that a graph can be decomposed into $k$ locally irregular graphs, is known to be NP-hard in general (Baudon, Bensmail, and Sopena, 2015). This naturally raises interest in the study of related problems. Among others, the concept of local irregularity was defined for digraphs in several different ways. In this paper we present the following new methods of defining a locally irregular digraph. The first one, weak local irregularity, is based on distinguishing adjacent vertices by indegree-outdegree pairs, and the second one, strong local irregularity, asks for different balanced degrees (i.e., difference between the outdegree and the indegree of a vertex) of adjacent vertices. For both of these irregularities, we define locally irregular decompositions and colorings of digraphs. We discuss relation of these concept to others, which were studied previously, and provide related conjectures on the minimum number of colors in weak and strong locally irregular colorings. We support these conjectures with new results, using the chromatic and structural properties of digraphs and their skeletons (Eulerian and symmetric digraphs, orientations of regular graphs, cacti, etc.).
A method to optimize antipodal coloring span of graphs and its application
In this article, we study radio \(k\)-colorings of simple connected graphs \(G\) with diameter \(d\), where a radio \(k\)-coloring \(g\) assigns non-negative integers to \(V(G)\) (vertices of \(G\)) such that \(|g(u) - g(v)| \geq 1 + k - d(u, v)\) for any two vertices \(u, v\) with \(1 \leq k \leq d\). The span of a radio \(k\)-coloring \(g\), expressed by \(rc_k(g)\), is the maximum integer assigned by \(g\), and the radio \(k\)-chromatic number \(rc_k(G)\) is the minimum span among all radio \(k\)-colorings of \(G\). A coloring \(g\) is minimal if \(rc_k(g) = rc_k(G)\). When \(k = d-1\), this coloring is known as the antipodal coloring, and \(rc_{d-1}(G)\) referred to as the antipodal number, is denoted by \(ac(G)\). We derive a sufficient condition for an antipodal coloring to be minimal and apply this criterion to determine the antipodal number of the generalized Petersen graph \(GP(n,1)\) for all \(n\) except when \(n \equiv 2 \pmod{8}\), and for toroidal grids \(T_{r,s} = C_r \square C_s\) when \(rs\) is even. Additionally, we establish a lower bound for \(ac(T_{r,s})\) when \(rs\) is odd.
Eccentricity spectrum of join of central graphs and Eccentricity Wiener index of graphs
The eccentricity matrix of a simple connected graph is derived from its distance matrix by preserving the largest non-zero distance in each row and column, while the other entries are set to zero. This article examines the $ε$-spectrum, $ε$-energy, $ε$-inertia and irreducibility of the central graph (respectively complement of the central graph) of a triangle-free regular graph(respectively regular graph). Also look into the $ε-$spectrum and the irreducibility of different central graph operations, such as central vertex join, central edge join, and central vertex-edge join. We also examine the $ε-$ energy of some specific graphs. These findings allow us to construct new families of $ε$-cospectral graphs and non $ε$-cospectral $ε-$equienergetic graphs. Additionally, we investigate certain upper and lower bounds for the eccentricity Wiener index of graphs. Also, provide an upper bound for the eccentricity energy of a self-centered graph.
Helly Number, Radon Number and Rank in $Δ$-Convexity on Graphs
This article discusses $Δ$-convexity on simple connected graphs. We establish general bounds for the Helly number, Radon number, and rank with respect to $Δ$-convexity on graphs. Additionally, we give the exact values for the Helly number and Radon number for chordal graphs, as well as the rank for block graphs.
A characterization of graphs $G$ with $m_G(λ)= 2c(G) + q_s(G) - 1$
Let $G$ be a simple connected graph. If every pendant path in $G$ is at least $P_s$, we denote that $G\in \mathbb{G}_s$. For $G \in \mathbb{G}_s$, let $Q_s(G)$ be the set of vertices in $G$ that are distance $s$ from the pendant vertex, and let $|Q_s(G)| = q_s(G)$. For $G \in \mathbb{G}_s$, Li et al. (2024) proved that when $λ$ is not an eigenvalue of $P_s$ and $G$ is neither a cycle nor a starlike tree $T_k$, it holds that $m_G(λ) \leq 2c(G) + q_s(G) - 1$ and characterized the extremal graphs when $G$ is a tree. In this article, we characterize the extremal graphs for which $m_G(λ) = 2c(G) + q_s(G) - 1$ when $G \in \mathbb{G}_{s}$ and $λ\notin σ(P_s)$.
Graph identification index
We introduce the \emph{ID-index} of a finite simple connected graph. For a graph $G=(V,\ E)$ with diameter $d$, we let $f:V\longrightarrow \mathbb{R}$ assign \emph{ranks} to the vertices, then under $f$, each vertex $v$ gets a \emph{string}, which is a $d$-vector with the $i$-th coordinate being the sum of the ranks of the vertices that are of distance $i$ from $v$. The \emph{ID-index} of $G$, denoted by $IDI(G)$, is defined to be the minimum number $k$ for which there is an $f$ with $|f(V)|=k$, such that each vertex gets a distinct string under $f$. We present some relations between ID-graphs, which were defined by Chartrand, Kono, and Zhang, and their ID-indices; give a lower bound on the ID-index of a graph; and determine the ID-indices of paths, grids, cycles, prisms, complete graphs, some complete multipartite graphs, and some caterpillars.
Detachable pairs in $3$-connected matroids and simple $3$-connected graphs
Let $M$ be a $3$-connected matroid. A pair $\{e,f\}$ in $M$ is detachable if $M \backslash e \backslash f$ or $M / e / f$ is $3$-connected. Williams (2015) proved that if $M$ has at least 13 elements, then at least one of the following holds: $M$ has a detachable pair, $M$ has a $3$-element circuit or cocircuit, or $M$ is a spike. We address the case where $M$ has a $3$-element circuit or cocircuit, to obtain a characterisation of when a matroid with at least 13 elements has a detachable pair. As a consequence, we characterise when a simple $3$-connected graph $G$ with $|E(G)| \ge 13$ has a pair of edges $\{e,f\}$ such that $G/e/f$ or $G \backslash e\backslash f$ is simple and $3$-connected.
Proof of a conjecture on graph polytope
Graph polytopes arising from vertex-weighted graphs were first introduced by Bóna, Ju, and Yoshida. We prove a conjecture stating that for any simple connected graph, the numerator polynomial of the Ehrhart series of its graph polytope is palindromic, using Stanley's reciprocity theorem. Furthermore, we introduce hypergraph polytopes and establish that every simple, connected, unimodular hypergraph polytope is an integer polytope. Additionally, for simple connected uniform hypergraph polytopes, we demonstrate that the numerator polynomial of their Ehrhart series is palindromic.
Connected graphs with large multiplicity of $-1$ in the spectrum of the eccentricity matrix
The eccentricity matrix of a simple connected graph is obtained from the distance matrix by only keeping the largest distances for each row and each column, whereas the remaining entries become zero. This matrix is also called the anti-adjacency matrix, since the adjacency matrix can also be obtained from the distance matrix but this time by keeping only the entries equal to $1$. It is known that, for $λ\not\in \{-1,0\}$ and a fixed $i\in \mathbb{N}$, there is only a finite number of graphs with $n$ vertices having $λ$ as an eigenvalue of multiplicity $n-i$ on the spectrum of the adjacency matrix. This phenomenon motivates researchers to consider the graphs has a large multiplicity of an eigenvalue in the spectrum of the eccentricity matrix, for example, the eigenvalue $-2$ [X. Gao, Z. Stanić, J.F. Wang, Grahps with large multiplicity of $-2$ in the spectrum of the eccentricity matrix, Discrete Mathematics, 347 (2024) 114038]. In this paper, we characterize the connected graphs with $n$ vertices having $-1$ as an eigenvalue of multiplicity $n-i$ $(i\leq5)$ in the spectrum of the eccentricity matrix. Our results also become meaningful in the framework of the median eigenvalue problem [B. Mohar, Median eigenvalues and the HOMO-LUMO index of graphs, Journal of Combinatorial Theory Series B, 112 (2015) 78-92].
