Minimal graph in which the intersection of two longest paths is not a separator
We prove that for a connected simple graph $G$ with $n\le 10$ vertices, and two longest paths $C$ and $D$ in $G$, the intersection of vertex sets $V(C)\cap V(D)$ is a separator. This shows that the graph found previously with $n=11$, in which the complement of the intersection of vertex sets $V(C)\cap V(D)$ of two longest paths is connected, is minimal.

Edge coloring graphs with large minimum degree

Let $G$ be a simple graph with maximum degree $Δ(G)$. A subgraph $H$ of $G$ is overfull if $|E(H)|>Δ(G)\lfloor |V(H)|/2 \rfloor$. Chetwynd and Hilton in 1985 conjectured that a graph $G$ with $Δ(G)>|V(G)|/3$ has chromatic index $Δ(G)$ if and only if $G$ contains no overfull subgraph. The 1-factorization conjecture is a special case of this overfull conjecture, which states that for even $n$, every regular $n$-vertex graph with degree at least about $n/2$ has a 1-factorization and was confirmed for large graphs in 2014. Supporting the overfull conjecture as well as generalizing the 1-factorization conjecture in an asymptotic way, in this paper, we show that for any given $0<\varepsilon <1$, there exists a positive integer $n_0$ such that the following statement holds: if $G$ is a graph on $2n\ge n_0$ vertices with minimum degree at least $(1+\varepsilon)n$, then $G$ has chromatic index $Δ(G)$ if and only if $G$ contains no overfull subgraph.
The overfullness of graphs with small minimum degree and large maximum degree
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a simple graph $G$, denote by $Δ(G)$, $δ(G)$, and $χ'(G)$ the maximum degree, the minimum degree, and the chromatic index of $G$, respectively. We say $G$ is \emph{$Δ$-critical} if $χ'(G)=Δ(G)+1$ and $χ'(H)\le Δ(G)$ for every proper subgraph $H$ of $G$; and $G$ is \emph{overfull} if $|E(G)|>Δ\lfloor |V(G)|/2 \rfloor$. Since a maximum matching in $G$ can have size at most $\lfloor |V(G)|/2 \rfloor$, it follows that $χ'(G) = Δ(G) +1$ if $G$ is overfull. Conversely, let $G$ be a $Δ$-critical graph. The well known overfull conjecture of Chetwynd and Hilton asserts that $G$ is overfull provided $Δ(G) > |V(G)|/3$. In this paper, we show that any $Δ$-critical graph $G$ is overfull if $Δ(G) - 7δ(G)/4\ge(3|V(G)|-17)/4$.

Filtered simplicial homology, graph dissimilarity and überhomology
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a filtration on the simplicial homology of a finite simplicial complex X using bi-colourings of its vertices. This yields two dual homology theories closely related to discrete Morse matchings on X. We give an explicit expression for the associated graded object of these homologies when X is the matching complex of the Tait graph of a plane graph $G$, in terms of subgraphs determined by certain matchings on the dual of G. We then use one of these homologies, in the case where X is a graph, to define a conjecturally optimal dissimilarity pseudometric for graphs; we prove various results for this dissimilarity and provide several computations. We further show that, by organising the horizontal homologies of a simplicial complex in the poset of its colourings, we obtain a triply graded homology theory which we call überhomology. This latter homology is not a homotopy invariant, but nonetheless encodes both combinatorial and topological information on X. For example, we prove that if X is a subdivision, the überhomology vanishes in its lowest degree, while for an homology manifold it coincides with the fundamental class in its top degree. We compute the überhomology on several classes of examples and infinite families, and prove some of its properties; namely that, in its extremal degrees, it is well-behaved under coning and taking suspension. We then focus on the case where X is a simple graph, and prove a detection result. Finally, we define some singly-graded homologies for graphs obtained by specialising the überhomology in certain bi-degrees, provide some computations and use computer aided calculations to make some conjectures.

Graph reliability evaluation via random $K$-out-of-$N$ systems
Published in Communications in Statistics - Theory and Methods, 53(3) (2024), 1024-1034 • View PublicationBIB
The present study was concerned with network failure problems for simple connected undirected graphs. A connected graph becomes unconnected through edge failure, under the assumptions that only edges can fail and each edge has an identical failure distribution. The main purpose of the present study was to show recurrent relations with respect to the number of edges in graph generation procedures. To this end, simple connected undirected graphs were correlated to random $K$-out-of-$N$ systems, and key features of such systems were applied. In addition, some simple graph cases and examples were analyzed.

Index of Parameters of Iterated Line Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a prolific graph, that is a finite connected simple graph which is not isomorphic to a cycle nor a path nor the star graph $K_{1,3}$. The line-graph of $G$, denoted by $L(G)$, is defined by having its vertex-set equal to the edge-set of $G$ and two vertices of $L(G)$ are adjacent if the corresponding edges are adjacent in $G$. For a positive integer $k$, the iterated line-graph $L^k(G)$ is defined recursively by $L^k(G)=L(L^{k-1}(G))$. We consider fifteen graph parameters and study their behaviour when the operation of taking the line-graph is iterated. We shall first show that all of these parameters are unbounded. This idea is motivated by a well-known result of van Rooij and Wilf that says that the number of vertices is unbounded if and only if the graph is prolific. We then study of the value of $k(P,{\mathcal F})$, which is the index of a family of prolific graphs with regards to a given graph parameter $P(G)$. For a given parameter $P(G)$, the index of $G$ is denoted by $ind(P,G) = \min \{ r : P(G) < P(L^r(G) \}$. Now for a family $\mathcal F$ of prolific graphs, the index of the family is $k(P,\mathcal{F}) = \max \{ ind(P,G) : G \in \mathcal F\}$. The problem of determining the index of a parameter over the family of prolific graphs is motivated by a result of Chartrand who showed that it could require $k=|V(G)|-3$ iterations for $L^k(G)$ to have a hamiltonian cycle. For twelve of the parameters considered, we exactly determine $k(P,\mathcal F)$ where $\mathcal F$ is the family of all prolific graphs, and for some parameters we also characterize the class of prolific graphs realizing the extremal value $k(P,\mathcal F$). Interesting open problems remain, in particular completing the determination of $k(P,\mathcal F)$ for the three parameters: the independence number, independent domination number and domination number.

The chromatic number of signed graphs with bounded maximum average degree
Published • View PublicationBIB
A signed graph is a simple graph with two types of edges: positive and negative edges. Switching a vertex $v$ of a signed graph corresponds to changing the type of each edge incident to $v$. A homomorphism from a signed graph $G$ to another signed graph $H$ is a mapping $\varphi: V(G) \rightarrow V(H)$ such that, after switching some of the vertices of $G$, $\varphi$ maps every edge of $G$ to an edge of $H$ of the same type. The chromatic number $χ_s(G)$ of a signed graph $G$ is the order of a smallest signed graph $H$ such that there is a homomorphism from $G$ to $H$. The maximum average degree $mad(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the maximum of the average degrees of all the subgraphs of $G$. We denote $\mathcal{M}_k$ the class of signed graphs with maximum average degree less than $k$ and $\mathcal{P}_g$ the class of planar signed graphs of girth at least $g$. We prove: $χ_s(\mathcal{P}_{7}) \le 5$, $χ_s(\mathcal{M}_{\frac{17}{5}}) \le 10$ which implies $χ_s(\mathcal{P}_{5}) \le 10$, $χ_s(\mathcal{M}_{4-\frac{8}{q+3}}) \le q+1$ with $q$ a prime power congruent to 1 modulo 4.

On circulant nut graphs
A nut graph is a simple graph whose adjacency matrix has the eigenvalue~0 with multiplicity~1 such that its corresponding eigenvector has no zero entries. Motivated by a question of Fowler et al.~[\emph{Disc. Math. Graph Theory} 40 (2020), 533--557] to determine the pairs $(n,d)$ for which a vertex-transitive nut graph of order $n$ and degree $d$ exists, Ba\v sić et al.\ [\arxiv{2102.04418}, 2021] initiated the study of circulant nut graphs. Here we first show that the generator set of a circulant nut graph necessarily contains equally many even and odd integers. Then we characterize circulant nut graphs with the generator set $\{x,x+1,\dots,x+2t-1\}$ for $x,t\in\N$, which generalizes the result of Ba\v sić et al.\ for the generator set $\{1,\dots,2t\}$. We further study circulant nut graphs with the generator set $\{1,\dots,2t+1\}\setminus\{t\}$, which yields nut graphs of every even order $n\geq 4t+4$ whenever $t$~is odd such that $t\not\equiv_{10}1$ and $t\not\equiv_{18}15$. This fully resolves Conjecture~9 from Ba\v sić et al.~[ibid.]. We also study the existence of $4t$-regular circulant nut graphs for small values of~$t$, which partially resolves Conjecture~10 of Ba\v sić et al.~[ibid.].

Laplacian Coefficients of a Forest in terms of the Number of Closed Walks in the Forest and its Line Graph
Let $G$ be a finite simple graph with Laplacian polynomial $ψ(G,λ)=\sum_{k=0}^n(-1)^{n-k}c_kλ^k$. In an earlier paper, the coefficients $c_{n-4}$ and $c_{n-5}$ for tree with respect to some degree-based graph invariants were computed. The aim of this paper is to continue this work by giving an exact formula for the coefficients $c_{n-6}$. As a consequence of this work, the Laplacian coefficients $c_{n-k}$ of a forest $F$, $1\leq k \leq 6$, are computed in terms of the number of closed walks in $F$ and its line graph.
Fluctuations of Subgraph Counts in Graphon Based Random Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a graphon $W$ and a finite simple graph $H$, with vertex set $V(H)$, denote by $X_n(H, W)$ the number of copies of $H$ in a $W$-random graph on $n$ vertices. The asymptotic distribution of $X_n(H, W)$ was recently obtained by Hladký, Pelekis, and Šileikis (2021) in the case where $H$ is a clique. In this paper, we extend this result to any fixed graph $H$. Towards this we introduce a notion of $H$-regularity of graphons and show that if the graphon $W$ is not $H$-regular, then $X_n(H, W)$ has Gaussian fluctuations with scaling $n^{|V(H)|-\frac{1}{2}}$. On the other hand, if $W$ is $H$-regular, then the fluctuations are of order $n^{|V(H)|-1}$ and the limiting distribution of $X_n(H, W)$ can have both Gaussian and non-Gaussian components, where the non-Gaussian component is a (possibly) infinite weighted sum of centered chi-squared random variables with the weights determined by the spectral properties of a graphon derived from $W$. Our proofs use the asymptotic theory of generalized $U$-statistics developed by Janson and Nowicki (1991). We also investigate the structure of $H$-regular graphons for which either the Gaussian or the non-Gaussian component of the limiting distribution (but not both) is degenerate. Interestingly, there are also $H$-regular graphons $W$ for which both the Gaussian or the non-Gaussian components are degenerate, that is, $X_n(H, W)$ has a degenerate limit even under the scaling $n^{|V(H)|-1}$. We give an example of this degeneracy with $H=K_{1, 3}$ (the 3-star) and also establish non-degeneracy in a few examples. This naturally leads to interesting open questions on higher-order degeneracies.

Weierstrass sets on finite graphs
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics Volume 29 Issue 1 (2022), Paper No. 1.4, 13 pp • View PublicationBIB
We study two possible tropical analogues of Weierstrass semigroups on graphs, called rank and functional Weierstrass sets. We prove that on simple graphs, the first is contained in the second. We completely characterize the subsets of N arising as a functional Weierstrass set of some graph. Finally, we give a sufficient condition for a subset of N to be the rank Weierstrass set of some graph, allowing us to construct examples of rank Weierstrass sets that are not semigroups.

Forbidden subgraphs in enhanced power graphs of finite groups

The enhanced power graph of a group is the simple graph whose vertex set is consisted of all elements of the group, and whose any pair of vertices are adjacent if they generate a cyclic subgroup. In this paper, we classify all finite groups whose enhanced power graphs are split and threshold. We also classify all finite nilpotent groups whose enhanced power graphs are chordal graphs and cographs. Finally, we give some families of non-nilpotent groups whose enhanced power graphs are chordal graphs and cographs. These results partly answer a question posed by Peter J. Cameron.

Chromatic index of dense quasirandom graphs

Let $G$ be a simple graph with maximum degree $Δ(G)$. A subgraph $H$ of $G$ is overfull if $|E(H)|>Δ(G)\lfloor |V(H)|/2 \rfloor$. Chetwynd and Hilton in 1985 conjectured that a graph $G$ on $n$ vertices with $Δ(G)>n/3$ has chromatic index $Δ(G)$ if and only if $G$ contains no overfull subgraph. Glock, Kühn and Osthus in 2016 showed that the conjecture is true for dense quasirandom graphs with even order, and they conjectured that the same should hold for such graphs with odd order. In this paper, we show that the conjecture of Glock, Kühn and Osthus is affirmative.
On the scramble number of graphs

The scramble number of a graph is an invariant recently developed to aid in the study of divisorial gonality. In this paper we prove that scramble number is NP-hard to compute, also providing a proof that computing gonality is NP-hard even for simple graphs, as well as for metric graphs. We also provide general lower bounds for the scramble number of a Cartesian product of graphs, and apply these to compute gonality for many new families of product graphs.

Diameter and connectivity of finite simple graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a finite simple non-complete connected graph on $\{1, \ldots, n\}$ and $κ(G) \geq 1$ its vertex connectivity. Let $f(G)$ denote the number of free vertices of $G$ and $\mathrm{diam}(G)$ the diameter of $G$. Being motivated by the computation of the depth of the binomial edge ideal of $G$, the possible sequences $(n, q, f, d)$ of integers for which there is a finite simple non-complete connected graph $G$ on $\{1, \ldots, n\}$ with $q = κ(G), f = f(G), d = \mathrm{diam}(G)$ satisfying $f + d = n + 2 - q$ will be determined. Furthermore, finite simple non-complete connected graphs $G$ on $\{1, \ldots, n\}$ satisfying $f(G) + \mathrm{diam}(G) = n + 2 - κ(G)$ will be classified.

Sombor Index of Polymers
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a finite simple graph. The Sombor index $SO(G)$ of $G$ is defined as $\sum_{uv\in E(G)}\sqrt{d_u^2+d_v^2}$, where $d_u$ is the degree of vertex $u$ in $G$. Let $G$ be a connected graph constructed from pairwise disjoint connected graphs $G_1,\ldots ,G_k$ by selecting a vertex of $G_1$, a vertex of $G_2$, and identifying these two vertices. Then continue in this manner inductively. We say that $G$ is a polymer graph, obtained by point-attaching from monomer units $G_1,...,G_k$. In this paper, we consider some particular cases of these graphs that are of importance in chemistry and study their Sombor index.

A tight lower bound on the matching number of graphs via Laplacian eigenvalues
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics 101 (2022), 103468 • View PublicationBIB
Let $α'$ and $μ_i$ denote the matching number of a non-empty simple graph $G$ with $n$ vertices and the $i$-th smallest eigenvalue of its Laplacian matrix, respectively. In this paper, we prove a tight lower bound $$α' \ge \min\left\{\Big\lceil\frac{μ_2}{μ_n} (n -1)\Big\rceil,\ \ \Big\lceil\frac{1}{2}(n-1)\Big\rceil \right\}.$$ This bound strengthens the result of Brouwer and Haemers who proved that if $n$ is even and $2μ_2 \ge μ_n$, then $G$ has a perfect matching. A graph $G$ is factor-critical if for every vertex $v\in V(G)$, $G-v$ has a perfect matching. We also prove an analogue to the result of Brouwer and Haemers mentioned above by showing that if $n$ is odd and $2μ_2 \ge μ_n$, then $G$ is factor-critical. We use the separation inequality of Haemers to get a useful lemma, which is the key idea in the proofs. This lemma is of its own interest and has other applications. In particular, we prove similar results for the number of balloons, spanning even subgraphs, as well as spanning trees with bounded degree.

Positivity of Hadamard powers of a few band matrices
Published in Electronic Journal of Linear Algebra, Volume-38, (2022), 85-90 • View PublicationBIB
Let $\mathbb{P}_G([0,\infty))$ and $\mathbb{P}_G^{'}([0,\infty))$ be the sets of positive semidefinite and positive definite matrices of order $n$, respectively, with nonnegative entries, where some positions of zero entries are restricted by a simple graph $G$ with $n$ vertices. It is proved that for a connected simple graph $G$ of order $n\geq 3$, the set of powers preserving positive semidefiniteness on $\mathbb{P}_G([0,\infty))$ is precisely the same as the set of powers preserving positive definiteness on $\mathbb{P}_G^{'}([0,\infty))$. In particular, this provides an explicit combinatorial description of the critical exponent for positive definiteness, for all chordal graphs. Using chain sequences, it is proved that the Hadamard powers preserving the positive (semi) definiteness of every tridiagonal matrix with nonnegative entries are precisely $r\geq 1$. The infinite divisibility of tridiagonal matrices is studied. The same results are proved for a special family of pentadiagonal matrices.

Modular Relations of the Tutte Symmetric Function
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory Series A, Volume 187, April 2022, 105572 • View PublicationBIB
For a graph $G$, its Tutte symmetric function $XB_G$ generalizes both the Tutte polynomial $T_G$ and the chromatic symmetric function $X_G$. We may also consider $XB$ as a map from the $t$-extended Hopf algebra $\mathbb{G}[t]$ of labelled graphs to symmetric functions. We show that the kernel of $XB$ is generated by vertex-relabellings and a finite set of modular relations, in the same style as a recent analogous result by Penaguiao on the chromatic symmetric function $X$. In particular, we find one such relation that generalizes the well-known triangular modular relation of Orellana and Scott, and build upon this to give a modular relation of the Tutte symmetric function for any two-edge-connected graph that generalizes the $n$-cycle relation of Dahlberg and van Willigenburg. Additionally, we give a structural characterization of all local modular relations of the chromatic and Tutte symmetric functions, and prove that there is no single local modification that preserves either function on simple graphs. We also give an expansion relating $XB_G$ to $X_{G/S}$ as $S$ ranges over all subsets of $E(G)$, use this to extend results on the chromatic symmetric function to the Tutte symmetric function, and show that analogous formulas hold for a Tutte quasisymmetric function on digraphs.

An improvement to the vertex-splitting conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a simple graph $G$, denote by $n$, $Δ(G)$, and $χ'(G)$ its order, maximum degree, and chromatic index, respectively. A connected class 2 graph $G$ is edge-chromatic critical if $χ'(G-e)<Δ(G)+1$ for every edge $e$ of $G$. Define $G$ to be overfull if $|E(G)|>Δ(G) \lfloor n/2 \rfloor$. Clearly, overfull graphs are class 2 and any graph obtained from a regular graph of even order by splitting a vertex is overfull. Let $G$ be an $n$-vertex connected regular class 1 graph with $Δ(G) >n/3$. Hilton and Zhao in 1997 conjectured that if $G^*$ is obtained from $G$ by splitting one vertex of $G$ into two vertices, then $G^*$ is edge-chromatic critical, and they verified the conjecture for graphs $G$ with $Δ(G)\ge \frac{n}{2}(\sqrt{7}-1)\approx 0.82n$. The graph $G^*$ is easily verified to be overfull, and so the hardness of the conjecture lies in showing that the deletion of every of its edge decreases the chromatic index. Except in 2002, Song showed that the conjecture is true for a special class of graphs $G$ with $Δ(G)\ge \frac{n}{2}$, no other progress on this conjecture had been made. In this paper, we confirm the conjecture for graphs $G$ with $Δ(G) \ge 0.75n$.
