On a conjecture of Laplacian energy of trees
Let $G$ be a simple graph with $n$ vertices, $m$ edges having Laplacian eigenvalues $μ_1, μ_2, \dots, μ_{n-1},μ_n=0$. The Laplacian energy $LE(G)$ is defined as $LE(G)=\sum_{i=1}^{n}|μ_i-\overline{d}|$, where $\overline{d}=\frac{2m}{n}$ is the average degree of $G$. Radenković and Gutman conjectured that among all trees of order $n$, the path graph $P_n$ has the smallest Laplacian energy. Let $ \mathcal{T}_{n}(d) $ be the family of trees of order $n$ having diameter $ d $. In this paper, we show that Laplacian energy of any tree $T\in \mathcal{T}_{n}(4)$ is greater than the Laplacian energy of $P_n$, thereby proving the conjecture for all trees of diameter $4$. We also show the truth of conjecture for all trees with number of non-pendent vertices at most $\frac{9n}{25}-2$. Further, we give some sufficient conditions for the conjecture to hold for a tree of order $n$.

The principal Erdős--Gallai differences of a degree sequence
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Erdős--Gallai criteria for recognizing degree sequences of simple graphs involve a system of inequalities. Given a fixed degree sequence, we consider the list of differences of the two sides of these inequalities. These differences have appeared in varying contexts, including characterizations of the split and threshold graphs, and we survey their uses here. Then, enlarging upon properties of these graph families, we show that both the last term and the maximum term of the principal Erdős--Gallai differences of a degree sequence are preserved under graph complementation and are monotonic under the majorization order and Rao's order on degree sequences.
On the Number of $k-$Matchings in Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Suppose $G$ is a undirected simple graph. A $k-$subset of edges in $G$ without common vertices is called a $k-$matching and the number of such subsets is denoted by $p(G,k)$. The aim of this paper is to present exact formulas for $p(G,3)$, $p(G,4)$ and $P(G,5)$ in terms of some degree-based invariants.
Graphs with large palette index
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given an edge-coloring of a graph, the palette of a vertex is defined as the set of colors of the edges which are incident with it. We define the palette index of a graph as the minimum number of distinct palettes, taken over all edge-colorings, occurring among the vertices of the graph. Several results about the palette index of some specific classes of graphs are known. In this paper we propose a different approach that leads to new and more general results on the palette index. Our main theorem gives a sufficient condition for a graph to have palette index larger than its minimum degree. In the second part of the paper, by using such a result, we answer to two open problems on this topic. First, for every $r$ odd, we construct a family of $r$-regular graphs with palette index reaching the maximum admissible value. After that, we construct the first known family of simple graphs whose palette index grows quadratically with respect to their maximum degree.

On Magic Distinct Labellings of Simple Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A magic labelling of a graph $G$ with magic sum $s$ is a labelling of the edges of $G$ by nonnegative integers such that for each vertex $v\in V$, the sum of labels of all edges incident to $v$ is equal to the same number $s$. Stanley gave remarkable results on magic labellings, but the distinct labelling case is much more complicated. We consider the complete construction of all magic labellings of a given graph $G$. The idea is illustrated in detail by dealing with three regular graphs. We give combinatorial proofs. The structure result was used to enumerate the corresponding magic distinct labellings.

The fractional chromatic number of $K_Δ$-free graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a simple graph $G$, let $χ_f(G)$ be the fractional chromatic number of $G$. In this paper, we aim to establish upper bounds on $χ_f(G)$ for those graphs $G$ with restrictions on the clique number. Namely, we prove that for $Δ\geq 4$, if $G$ has maximum degree at most $Δ$ and is $K_Δ$-free, then $χ_f(G) \leq Δ-\tfrac{1}{8}$ unless $G= C^2_8$ or $G = C_5\boxtimes K_2$. This im proves the result in [King, Lu, and Peng, SIAM J. Discrete Math., 26(2) (2012), pp. 452-471] for $Δ\geq 4$ and the result in [Katherine and King, SIAM J.Discrete Math., 27(2) (2013), pp. 1184-1208] for $Δ\in \{6,7,8\}$.

Matching in power graphs of finite groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
The power graph $P(G)$ of a finite group $G$ is the undirected simple graph with vertex set $G$, where two elements are adjacent if one is a power of the other. In this paper, the matching numbers of power graphs of finite groups are investigated. We give upper and lower bounds, and conditions for the power graph of a group to possess a perfect matching. We give a formula for the matching number for any finite nilpotent group. In addition, using some elementary number theory, we show that the matching number of the enhanced power graph $P_e(G)$ of $G$ (in which two elements are adjacent if both are powers of a common element) is equal to that of the power graph of $G$.
On normalized Laplacian eigenvalues of power graphs associated to finite cyclic groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a simple connected graph $ G $ of order $ n $, the normalized Laplacian is a square matrix of order $ n $, defined as $\mathcal{L}(G)= D(G)^{-\frac{1}{2}}L(G)D(G)^{-\frac{1}{2}}$, where $ D(G)^{-\frac{1}{2}} $ is the diagonal matrix whose $ i$-th diagonal entry is $ \frac{1}{\sqrt{d_{i}}} $. In this article, we find the normalized Laplacian eigenvalues of the joined union of regular graphs in terms of the adjacency eigenvalues and the eigenvalues of quotient matrix associated with graph $ G $. For a finite group $\mathcal{G}$, the power graph $\mathcal{P}(\mathcal{G})$ of a group $ \mathcal{G} $ is defined as the simple graph in which two distinct vertices are joined by an edge if and only if one is the power of other. As a consequence of the joined union of graphs, we investigate the normalized Laplacian eigenvalues of power graphs of finite cyclic group $ \mathbb{Z}_{n}. $

On the resurgence and asymptotic resurgence of homogeneous ideals
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $\mathbb{K}$ be a field and $R = \mathbb{K}[x_1, \ldots, x_n]$. We obtain an improved upper bound for asymptotic resurgence of squarefree monomial ideals in $R$. We study the effect on the resurgence when sum, product and intersection of ideals are taken. We obtain sharp upper and lower bounds for the resurgence and asymptotic resurgence of cover ideals of finite simple graphs in terms of associated combinatorial invariants. We also explicitly compute the resurgence and asymptotic resurgence of cover ideals of several classes of graphs. We characterize a graph being bipartite in terms of the resurgence and asymptotic resurgence of edge and cover ideals. We also compute explicitly the resurgence and asymptotic resurgence of edge ideals of some classes of graphs.

Coloring Discrete Manifolds
Discrete d-manifolds are classes of finite simple graphs which can triangulate classical manifolds but which are defined entirely within graph theory. We show that the chromatic number X(G) of a discrete d-manifold G is sandwiched between d+1 and 2(d+1). From the general identity X(A+B)=X(A)+X(B) for the join A+B of two finite simple graphs, it follows that there are (2k)-spheres with chromatic number X=(3k+1) and (2k-1)-spheres with chromatic number X=3k. Examples of 2-manifolds with X(G)=5 have been known since the pioneering work of Fisk. Current data support the that the ceiling function of 3(d+1)/2 could be an upper bound for all d-manifolds G, generalizing a conjecture of Albertson-Stromquist, stating X(G) is bounded above by 5 for all 2-manifolds. For a d-manifold, Fisk has introduced the (d-2)-variety O(G). This graph O(G) has maximal simplices of dimension (d-2) and correspond to complete complete subgraphs K_{d-1} of G for which the dual circle has odd cardinality. In general, O(G) is a union of (d-2)-manifolds. We note that if O(S(x)) is either empty or a (d-3)-sphere for all x then O(G) is a (d-2)-manifold or empty. The knot O(G) is already interesting for 3-manifolds G because Fisk has demonstrated that every possible knot can appear as O(G) for some 3-manifold. For 4-manifolds G especially, the Fisk variety O(G) is a 2-manifold in G as long as all O(S(x)) are either empty or a knot in every unit 3-sphere S(x).

Spectral properties of $p$-Sombor matrices and beyond
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G=(V(G),E(G))$ be a simple graph with vertex set $V(G)=\{v_{1},v_{2},\cdots, v_{n}\}$ and edge set $E(G)$. The $p$-Sombor matrix $\mathcal{S}_{p}(G)$ of $G$ is the square matrix of order $n$ whose $(i,j)$-entry is equal to $((d_{i})^{p}+(d_{j})^{p})^{\frac{1}{p}}$ if $v_{i}\sim v_{j}$, and 0 otherwise, where $d_{i}$ denotes the degree of vertex $v_{i}$ in $G$. In this paper, we study the relationship between $p$-Sombor index $SO_{p}(G)$ and $p$-Sombor matrix $\mathcal{S}_{p}(G)$ by the $k$-th spectral moment $N_{k}$ and the spectral radius of $\mathcal{S}_{p}(G)$. Then we obtain some bounds of $p$-Sombor Laplacian eigenvalues, $p$-Sombor spectral radius, $p$-Sombor spectral spread, $p$-Sombor energy and $p$-Sombor Estrada index. We also investigate the Nordhaus-Gaddum-type results for $p$-Sombor spectral radius and energy. At last, we give the regression model for boiling point and some other invariants.

Minimal quadrangulations of surfaces
Published • View PublicationBIB
A quadrangular embedding of a graph in a surface $Σ$, also known as a quadrangulation of $Σ$, is a cellular embedding in which every face is bounded by a $4$-cycle. A quadrangulation of $Σ$ is minimal if there is no quadrangular embedding of a (simple) graph of smaller order in $Σ$. In this paper we determine $n(Σ)$, the order of a minimal quadrangulation of a surface $Σ$, for all surfaces, both orientable and nonorientable. Letting $S_0$ denote the sphere and $N_2$ the Klein bottle, we prove that $n(S_0)=4, n(N_2)=6$, and $n(Σ)=\lceil (5+\sqrt{25-16χ(Σ)})/2\rceil$ for all other surfaces $Σ$, where $χ(Σ)$ is the Euler characteristic. Our proofs use a `diagonal technique', introduced by Hartsfield in 1994. We explain the general features of this method.

Some tight bounds on the minimum and maximum forcing numbers of graphs
Published in Discrete Applied Mathematics 2023 • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a simple graph with $2n$ vertices and a perfect matching. We denote by $f(G)$ and $F(G)$ the minimum and maximum forcing number of $G$, respectively. Hetyei obtained that the maximum number of edges of graphs $G$ with a unique perfect matching is $n^2$. We know that $G$ has a unique perfect matching if and only if $f(G)=0$. Along this line, we generalize the classical result to all graphs $G$ with $f(G)=k$ for $0\leq k\leq n-1$, and characterize corresponding extremal graphs as well. Hence we get a non-trivial lower bound of $f(G)$ in terms of the order and size. For bipartite graphs, we gain corresponding stronger results. Further, we obtain a new upper bound of $F(G)$. For bipartite graphs $G$, Che and Chen (2013) obtained that $f(G)=n-1$ if and only if $G$ is complete bipartite graph $K_{n,n}$. We completely characterize all bipartite graphs $G$ with $f(G)= n-2$.
On global offensive alliance in zero-divisor graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $\G(V,E)$ be a simple graph without loops nor multiple edges. A nonempty subset $S \subseteq V$ is said a {\em global offensive alliance} if every vertex $v \in V- S$ satisfies that $\d_S(v) \geq \d_{\overline{S}}(v)+1$. The {\em global offensive alliance number} $\g^o(Γ)$ is defined as the minimum cardinality among all global offensive alliances. Let $R$ be a finite commutative ring with identity. In this paper, we initiate the study of the global offensive alliance number of the zero-divisor graph $\G(R)$.
The differential on Graph Operator $§{G}$
Let $G=(V(G),E(G))$ be a simple graph with vertex set $V(G)$ and edge set $E(G)$. Let $S$ be a subset of $V(G)$, and let $B(S)$ be the set of neighbours of $S$ in $V(G) \setminus S$. The differential $\partial(S)$ of $S$ is defined as $|B(S)|-|S|$. The maximum value of $\partial(S)$ taken over all subsets $S\subseteq V$ is the differential $\partial(G)$ of $G$. A graph operator is a mapping $F: G\rightarrow G'$, where $G$ and $G'$ are families of graphs. The graph $§{G}$ is defined as the graph obtained from $G$ con bipartición de vértices $V(G)\cup E(G)$, donde hay tantas aristas entre $v \in V(G)$ y $e \in E(G)$, como veces $e$ sea incidente con $v$ en $G$. In this paper we study the relationship between $\partial(G)$ and $\partial(§{G})$. Besides, we relate the differential of a graph with known parameters of a graph, namely, its domination and independence number.

Cyclic and Linear Graph Partitions and Normal Ordering
The Stirling number of a simple graph is the number of partitions of its vertex set into a specific number of non-empty independent sets. In 2015, Engbers et al. showed that the coefficients in the normal ordering of a word $w$ in the alphabet $\{x,D\}$ subject to the relation $Dx=xD+1$ are equal to the Stirling number of certain graphs constructed from $w$. In this paper, we introduce graphical versions of the Stirling numbers of the first kind and the Lah numbers and show how they occur as coefficients in other normal ordering settings. Identities involving their $q$-analogues are also obtained.

More on total domination polynomial and $\mathcal{D}_t$-equivalence classes of some graphs
Let $G = (V, E)$ be a simple graph of order $n$. The total dominating set of $G$ is a subset $D$ of $V$ that every vertex of $V$ is adjacent to some vertices of $D$. The total domination number of $G$ is equal to minimum cardinality of total dominating set in $G$ and is denoted by $γ_t(G)$. The total domination polynomial of $G$ is the polynomial $D_t(G,x)=\sum_{i=γ_t(G)}^n d_t(G,i)x^i$, where $d_t(G,i)$ is the number of total dominating sets of $G$ of size $i$. Two graphs $G$ and $H$ are said to be total dominating equivalent or simply $\mathcal{D}_t$-equivalent, if $D_t(G,x)=D_t(H,x)$. The equivalence class of $G$, denoted $[G]$, is the set of all graphs $\mathcal{D}_t$-equivalent to $G$. In this paper, we investigate $\mathcal{D}_t$-equivalence classes of some graphs. Also we introduce some families of graphs whose total domination polynomials are unimodal.

On Rainbow Cycles and Proper Edge Colorings of Generalized Polygons
Published • View PublicationBIB
An edge coloring of a simple graph $G$ is said to be \textit{proper rainbow-cycle-forbidding} (PRCF, for short) if no two incident edges receive the same color and for any cycle in $G$, at least two edges of that cycle receive the same color. A graph $G$ is defined to be \textit{PRCF-good} if it admits a PRCF edge coloring, and $G$ is deemed \textit{PRCF-bad} otherwise. In recent work, Hoffman, et al. study PRCF edge colorings and find many examples of PRCF-bad graphs having girth less than or equal to 4. They then ask whether such graphs exist having girth greater than 4. In our work, we give a straightforward counting argument showing that the Hoffman-Singleton graph answers this question in the affirmative for the case of girth 5. It is then shown that certain generalized polygons, constructed of sufficiently large order, are also PRCF-bad, thus proving the existence of PRCF-bad graphs of girth 6, 8, 12, and 16.

Assorted Musings on Dimension-critical Graphs
For a finite simple graph $G$, say $G$ is of dimension $n$, and write $\dim(G) = n$, if $n$ is the smallest integer such that $G$ can be represented as a unit-distance graph in $\mathbb{R}^n$. Define $G$ to be \emph{dimension-critical} if every proper subgraph of $G$ has dimension less than $G$. In this article, we determine exactly which complete multipartite graphs are dimension-critical. It is then shown that for each $n \geq 2$, there is an arbitrarily large dimension-critical graph $G$ with $\dim(G) = n$. We then pose and expound upon a number of questions related to this subject matter, questions that hopefully will prompt future research.

The power graph of a group is the simple graph whose vertices are the group elements and two vertices are adjacent whenever one of them is a positive power of the other. We characterize the finite nilpotent groups whose power graphs have equal vertex connectivity and minimum degree.
