Standard Monomials of 1-Skeleton Ideals of Graphs and Their Signless Laplace Matrices
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a (multi) graph on the vertex set $V=\{0,1,\ldots ,n\}$ with root $0$. The $G$-parking function ideal $\mathcal{M}_G$ is a monomial ideal in the polynomial ring $R=\mathbb{K}[x_1,\ldots ,x_n]$ over a field $\mathbb{K}$ such that $\dim_{\mathbb K}\left(\frac{R}{\mathcal{M}_G}\right)=\det\left(\widetilde{L}_G\right)$, where $\widetilde{L}_G$ is the truncated Laplace matrix of $G$ and $\det\left(\widetilde L_G\right)$ is the determinant of $\widetilde L_G$. In other words, standard monomials of the Artinian quotient $\frac{R}{\mathcal{M}_G}$ correspond bijectively with the spanning trees of $G$. For $0\leq k\leq n-1$, the $k$-skeleton ideal $\mathcal{M}_G^{(k)}$ of $G$ is the monomial subideal $\mathcal{M}_G^{(k)}=\left\langle m_A:\emptyset\neq A\subseteq[n]\text{ and }|A|\leq k+1\right\rangle$ of the $G$-parking function ideal $\mathcal{M}_G=\left\langle m_A : \emptyset \neq A\subseteq[n]\right\rangle\subseteq R$. For a simple graph $G$, Dochtermann conjectured that $\dim_{\mathbb K}\left(\frac{R}{\mathcal{M}_G^{(1)}}\right)\geq\det\left(\widetilde{Q}_G\right)$, where $\widetilde Q_G$ is the truncated signless Laplace matrix of $G$. We show that Dochtermann conjecture holds for any (simple or multi) graph $G$ on $V$.

The Power Graph of a Torsion-Free Group Determines the Directed Power Graph
The directed power graph $\vec{\mathcal G}(\mathbf G)$ of a group $\mathbf G$ is the simple digraph with vertex set $G$ such that $x\rightarrow y$ if $y$ is a power of $x$. The power graph of $\mathbf G$, denoted with $\mathcal G(\mathbf G)$, is the underlying simple graph. In this paper, for groups $\mathbf G$ and $\mathbf H$, the following is proved. If $\mathbf G$ has no quasicyclic subgroup $\mathbf C_{p^\infty}$ which has trivial intersection with every cyclic subgroup $\mathbf K$ of $\mathbf G$ such that $\mathbf K\not\leq\mathbf C_{p^\infty}$, then $\mathcal G(\mathbf G)\cong \mathcal G(\mathbf H)$ implies $\vec{\mathcal G}(\mathbf G)\cong \vec{\mathcal G}(\mathbf H)$. Consequently, any two torsion-free groups having isomorphic power graphs have isomorphic directed power graphs.

$Δ$-critical graphs with a vertex of degree 2
Let $G$ be a simple graph with maximum degree $Δ$. A classic result of Vizing shows that $χ'(G)$, the chromatic index of $G$, is either $Δ$ or $Δ+1$. We say $G$ is of \emph{Class 1} if $χ'(G)=Δ$, and is of \emph{Class 2} otherwise. A graph $G$ is \emph{$Δ$-critical} if $χ'(G)=Δ+1$ and $χ'(H)<Δ+1$ for every proper subgraph $H$ of $G$, and is \emph{overfull} if $|E(G)|>Δ\lfloor (|V(G)|-1)/2 \rfloor$. Clearly, overfull graphs are Class 2. Hilton and Zhao in 1997 conjectured that if $G$ is obtained from an $n$-vertex $Δ$-regular Class 1 graph with maximum degree greater than $n/3$ by splitting a vertex, then being overfull is the only reason for $G$ to be Class 2. This conjecture was only confirmed when $Δ\ge \frac{n}{2}(\sqrt{7}-1)\approx 0.82n$. In this paper, we improve the bound on $Δ$ from $\frac{n}{2}(\sqrt{7}-1)$ to $0.75n$. Considering the structure of $Δ$-critical graphs with a vertex of degree 2, we also show that for an $n$-vertex $Δ$-critical graph with $Δ\ge \frac{3n}{4}$, if it contains a vertex of degree 2, then it is overfull. We actually obtain a more general form of this result, which partially supports the overfull conjecture of Chetwynd and Hilton from 1986, which states that if $G$ is an $n$-vertex $Δ$-critical graph with $Δ>n/3$, then $G$ contains an overfull subgraph $H$ with $Δ(H)=Δ$. Our proof techniques are new and might shed some light on attacking both of the conjectures when $Δ$ is large.

Acyclic edge coloring conjecture is true on planar graphs without intersecting triangles
Published • View PublicationBIB
An acyclic edge coloring of a graph $G$ is a proper edge coloring such that no bichromatic cycles are produced. The acyclic edge coloring conjecture by Fiam{č}ik (1978) and Alon, Sudakov and Zaks (2001) states that every simple graph with maximum degree $Δ$ is acyclically edge $(Δ+ 2)$-colorable. Despite many milestones, the conjecture remains open even for planar graphs. In this paper, we confirm affirmatively the conjecture on planar graphs without intersecting triangles. We do so by first showing, by discharging methods, that every planar graph without intersecting triangles must have at least one of the six specified groups of local structures, and then proving the conjecture by recoloring certain edges in each such local structure and by induction on the number of edges in the graph.
Proper divisor graph of a positive integer
The proper divisor graph $Υ_n$ of a positive integer $n$ is the simple graph whose vertices are the proper divisors of $n$, and in which two distinct vertices $u, v$ are adjacent if and only if $n$ divides $uv$. The graph $Υ_n$ plays an important role in the study of the zero divisor graph of the ring $\mathbb{Z}_n$. In this paper, we study some graph theoretic properties of $Υ_n$ and determine the graph parameters such as clique number, chromatic number, chromatic index, independence number, matching number, domination number, vertex and edge covering numbers of $Υ_n$. We also determine the automorphism group of $Υ_n$.
On the Connectivity of Token Graphs of Trees

Let $k$ and $n$ be integers such that $1\leq k \leq n-1$, and let $G$ be a simple graph of order $n$. The $k$-token graph $F_k(G)$ of $G$ is the graph whose vertices are the $k$-subsets of $V(G)$, where two vertices are adjacent in $F_k(G)$ whenever their symmetric difference is an edge of $G$. In this paper we show that if $G$ is a tree, then the connectivity of $F_k(G)$ is equal to the minimum degree of $F_k(G)$.

Skeleton Ideals of Certain Graphs, Standard Monomials and Spherical Parking Functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be an (oriented) graph on the vertex set $V = \{ 0, 1,\ldots,n\}$ with root $0$. Postnikov and Shapiro associated a monomial ideal $\mathcal{M}_G$ in the polynomial ring $ R = {\mathbb{K}}[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$ over a field $\mathbb{K}$. A subideal $\mathcal{M}_G^{(k)}$ of $\mathcal{M}_G$ generated by subsets of $\widetilde{V}=V\setminus \{0\}$ of size at most $k+1$ is called a $k$-skeleton ideal of the graph $G$. Many interesting homological and combinatorial properties of $1$-skeleton ideal $\mathcal{M}_G^{(1)}$ are obtained by Dochtermann for certain classes of simple graph $G$. A finite sequence $\mathcal{P}=(p_1,\ldots,p_n) \in \mathbb{N}^n$ is called a spherical $G$-parking function if the monomial $\mathbf{x}^{\mathcal{P}} = \prod_{i=1}^{n} x_i^{p_i} \in \mathcal{M}_G \setminus \mathcal{M}_G^{(n-2)}$. Let ${\rm sPF}(G)$ be the set of all spherical $G$-parking functions. In this paper, a combinatorial description for all multigraded Betti numbers of the $k$-skeleton ideal $\mathcal{M}_{K_{n+1}}^{(k)}$ of the complete graph $K_{n+1}$ on $V$ are given. Also, using DFS burning algorithms of Perkinson-Yang-Yu (for simple graph) and Gaydarov-Hopkins (for multigraph), we give a combinatorial interpretation of spherical $G$-parking functions for the graph $G = K_{n+1}- \{e\}$ obtained from the complete graph $K_{n+1}$ on deleting an edge $e$. In particular, we showed that $|{\rm sPF}(K_{n+1}- \{e_0\} )|= (n-1)^{n-1}$ for an edge $e_0$ through the root $0$, but $|{\rm sPF}(K_{n+1} - \{e_1\})| = (n-1)^{n-3}(n-2)^2$ for an edge $e_1$ not through the root.

Bridge-Depth Characterizes which Structural Parameterizations of Vertex Cover Admit a Polynomial Kernel
Published in SIAM J. Discret. Math. 36(4): 2737-2773 (2022) • View PublicationBIB
We study the kernelization complexity of structural parameterizations of the Vertex Cover problem. Here, the goal is to find a polynomial-time preprocessing algorithm that can reduce any instance $(G,k)$ of the Vertex Cover problem to an equivalent one, whose size is polynomial in the size of a pre-determined complexity parameter of $G$. A long line of previous research deals with parameterizations based on the number of vertex deletions needed to reduce $G$ to a member of a simple graph class $\mathcal{F}$, such as forests, graphs of bounded tree-depth, and graphs of maximum degree two. We set out to find the most general graph classes $\mathcal{F}$ for which Vertex Cover parameterized by the vertex-deletion distance of the input graph to $\mathcal{F}$, admits a polynomial kernelization. We give a complete characterization of the minor-closed graph families $\mathcal{F}$ for which such a kernelization exists. We introduce a new graph parameter called bridge-depth, and prove that a polynomial kernelization exists if and only if $\mathcal{F}$ has bounded bridge-depth. The proof is based on an interesting connection between bridge-depth and the size of minimal blocking sets in graphs, which are vertex sets whose removal decreases the independence number.
An upper bound for the $k$-power domination number in $r$-uniform hypergraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Generalizing work on graphs, Chang and Roussel introduced $k$-power domination in hypergraphs and conjectured the upper bound for the $k$-power domination number for $r$-uniform hypergraphs on $n$ vertices was $\frac{n}{r+k}$. This upper bound was shown to be true for simple graphs ($r=2$) and it was further conjectured that only a family of hypergraphs, known as the squid hypergraphs, attained this upper bound. In this paper, the conjecture is proven to hold for hypergraphs with $r=3$ or $4$; but is shown to be false, by a counterexample, for $r\geq 7$. Furthermore, we show that the squid hypergraphs are not the only hypergraphs that attain the original upper bound. Finally, a new upper bound is proven for $r\geq 3$.

Dichotomy for Graph Homomorphisms with Complex Values on Bounded Degree Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The complexity of graph homomorphisms has been a subject of intense study [11, 12, 4, 42, 21, 17, 6, 20]. The partition function $Z_{\mathbf A}(\cdot)$ of graph homomorphism is defined by a symmetric matrix $\mathbf A$ over $\mathbb C$. We prove that the complexity dichotomy of [6] extends to bounded degree graphs. More precisely, we prove that either $G \mapsto Z_{\mathbf A}(G)$ is computable in polynomial-time for every $G$, or for some $Δ> 0$ it is #P-hard over (simple) graphs $G$ with maximum degree $Δ(G) \le Δ$. The tractability criterion on $\mathbf A$ for this dichotomy is explicit, and can be decided in polynomial-time in the size of $\mathbf A$. We also show that the dichotomy is effective in that either a P-time algorithm for, or a reduction from #SAT to, $Z_{\mathbf A}(\cdot)$ can be constructed from $\mathbf A$, in the respective cases.

Bounds Related to The Edge-List Chromatic and Total Chromatic Numbers of a Simple Graph
We show that for a simple graph $G$, $c'(G)\leqΔ(G)+2$ where $c'(G)$ is the choice index (or edge-list chromatic number) of $G$, and $Δ(G)$ is the maximum degree of $G$. As a simple corollary of this result, we show that the total chromatic number $χ_T(G)$ of a simple graph satisfies the inequality $χ_T(G)\leq\ Δ(G)+4$ and the total choice number $c_T(G)$ also satisfies this inequality. We also relate these bounds to the Hall index and the Hall condition index of a simple graph, and to the total Hall number and the total Hall condition number of a simple graph.
Proof of the Core Conjecture of Hilton and Zhao
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a simple graph with maximum degree $Δ$. We call $G$ \emph{overfull} if $|E(G)|>Δ\lfloor |V(G)|/2\rfloor$. The \emph{core} of $G$, denoted $G_Δ$, is the subgraph of $G$ induced by its vertices of degree $Δ$. A classic result of Vizing shows that $χ'(G)$, the chromatic index of $G$, is either $Δ$ or $Δ+1$. It is NP-complete to determine the chromatic index for a general graph. However, if $G$ is overfull then $χ'(G)=Δ+1$. Hilton and Zhao in 1996 conjectured that if $G$ is a simple connected graph with $Δ\ge 3$ and $Δ(G_Δ)\le 2$, then $χ'(G)=Δ+1$ if and only if $G$ is overfull or $G=P^*$, where $P^*$ is obtained from the Petersen graph by deleting a vertex. This conjecture, if true, implies an easy approach for calculating $χ'(G)$ for graphs $G$ satisfying the conditions. The progress on the conjecture has been slow: it was only confirmed for $Δ=3,4$, respectively, in 2003 and 2017. In this paper, we confirm this conjecture for all $Δ\ge 4$.

The 1-2-3 Conjecture holds for graphs with large enough minimum degree
A simple graph more often than not contains adjacent vertices with equal degrees. This in particular holds for all pairs of neighbours in regular graphs, while a lot such pairs can be expected e.g. in many random models. Is there a universal constant $K$, say $K=3$, such that one may always dispose of such pairs from any given connected graph with at least three vertices by blowing its selected edges into at most $K$ parallel edges? This question was first posed in 2004 by Karoński, Łuczak and Thomason, who equivalently asked if one may assign weights $1,2,3$ to the edges of every such graph so that adjacent vertices receive distinct weighted degrees - the sums of their incident weights. This basic problem is commonly referred to as the 1-2-3 Conjecture nowadays, and has been addressed in multiple papers. Thus far it is known that weights $1,2,3,4,5$ are sufficient [J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 100 (2010) 347-349]. We show that this conjecture holds if only the minimum degree $δ$ of a graph is large enough, i.e. when $δ= Ω(\logΔ)$, where $Δ$ denotes the maximum degree of the graph. The principle idea behind our probabilistic proof relies on associating random variables with a special and carefully designed distribution to most of the vertices of a given graph, and then choosing weights for major part of the edges depending on the values of these variables in a deterministic or random manner.
Asymptotic bounds on graphical partitions and partition comparability
Published • View PublicationBIB
An integer partition is called graphical if it is the degree sequence of a simple graph. We prove that the probability that a uniformly chosen partition of size $n$ is graphical decreases to zero faster than $n^{-.003}$, answering a question of Pittel. A lower bound of $n^{-1/2}$ was proven by Erdős and Richmond, and so this demonstrates that the probability decreases polynomially. Key to our argument is an asymptotic result of Pittel characterizing the joint distribution of the first rows and columns of a uniformly random partition, combined with a characterization of graphical partitions due to Erdős and Gallai. Our proof also implies a polynomial upper bound for the probability that two randomly chosen partitions are comparable in the dominance order.

Extremality of graph entropy based on Laplacian degrees of k-uniform hypergraphs
The graph entropy describes the structural information of graph. Motivated by the definition of graph entropy in general graphs, the graph entropy of hypergraphs based on Laplacian degree are defined. Some results on graph entropy of simple graphs are extended to k-uniform hypergraphs. Using an edge-moving operation, the maximum and minimum graph entropy based on Laplacian degrees are determined in k-uniform hypertrees, unicyclic k-uniform hypergraphs, bicyclic k-uniform hypergraphs and k-uniform chemical hypertrees, respectively, and the corresponding extremal graphs are determined.

On $k$-layered numbers and some labeling related to $k$-layered numbers
In this paper, first, we define and investigate $k$-layered numbers, which are a generalization of Zumkeller numbers. After that, we generalize the concept of Zumkeller labeling and Zumkeller cordial labeling to $k$-layered labeling and $k$-layered cordial labeling, respectively. Moreover, we prove that every simple graph admits Zumkeller labeling, Zumkeller cordial labeling, 3-layered labeling, 3-layered cordial labeling, 4-layered labeling and 4-layered cordial labeling.
The regularity and $h$-polynomial of Cameron-Walker graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Fix an integer $n \geq 1$, and consider the set of all connected finite simple graphs on $n$ vertices. For each $G$ in this set, let $I(G)$ denote the edge ideal of $G$ in the polynomial ring $R = K[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$. We initiate a study of the set $\mathcal{RD}(n) \subseteq \mathbb{N}^2$ consisting of all the pairs $(r,d)$ where $r = {\rm reg}(R/I(G))$, the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity, and $d = {\rm deg} h_{R/I(G)}(t)$, the degree of the $h$-polynomial, as we vary over all the connected graphs on $n$ vertices. In particular, we identify sets $A(n)$ and $B(n)$ such that $A(n) \subseteq \mathcal{RD}(n) \subseteq B(n)$. When we restrict to the family of Cameron-Walker graphs on $n$ vertices, we can completely characterize all the possible $(r,d)$.

The Reconstruction Conjecture for finite simple graphs and associated directed graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we study the Reconstruction Conjecture for finite simple graphs. Let $Γ$ and $Γ'$ be finite simple graphs with at least three vertices such that there exists a bijective map $f:V(Γ) \rightarrow V(Γ')$ and for any $v\in V(Γ)$, there exists an isomorphism $φ_v:Γ-v \to Γ'-f(v)$. Then we define the associated directed graph $\widetildeΓ=\widetildeΓ(Γ,Γ',f,\{φ_v\}_{v\in V(Γ)})$ with two kinds of arrows from the graphs $Γ$ and $Γ'$, the bijective map $f$ and the isomorphisms $\{φ_v\}_{v\in V(Γ)}$. By investigating the associated directed graph $\widetildeΓ$, we study when are the two graphs $Γ$ and $Γ'$ isomorphic.

Projective plane graphs and 3-rigidity
It is shown that a simple graph which is embeddable in the real projective plane is minimally 3-rigid if and only if it is (3,6)-tight. Moreover the topologically uncontractible embedded graphs of this type are constructible from one of 8 embedded graphs by a sequence of vertex splitting moves. In particular the characterisation of minimal 3-rigidity holds for a triangulated Mobius strip.
Point partition numbers: perfect graphs

Graphs considered in this paper are finite, undirected and without loops, but with multiple edges. For an integer $t\geq 1$, denote by $\mathcal{MG}_t$ the class of graphs whose maximum multiplicity is at most $t$. A graph $G$ is called strictly $t$-degenerate if every non-empty subgraph $H$ of $G$ contains a vertex $v$ whose degree in $H$ is at most $t-1$. The point partition number $χ_t(G)$ of $G$ is smallest number of colors needed to color the vertices of $G$ so that each vertex receives a color and vertices with the same color induce a strictly $t$-degenerate subgraph of $G$. So $χ_1$ is the chromatic number, and $χ_2$ is known as the point aboricity. The point partition number $χ_t$ with $t\geq 1$ was introduced by Lick and White. If $H$ is a simple graph, then $tH$ denotes the graph obtained from $H$ by replacing each edge of $H$ by $t$ parallel edges. Then $ω_t(G)$ is the largest integer $n$ such that $G$ contains a $tK_n$ as a subgraph. Let $G$ be a graph belonging to $\mathcal{MG}_t$. Then $ω_t(G)\leq χ_t(G)$ and we say that $G$ is $χ_t$-perfect if every induced subgraph $H$ of $G$ satisfies $ω_t(H)=χ_t(H)$. Based on the Strong Perfect Graph Theorem due to Chudnowsky, Robertson, Seymour and Thomas, we give a characterization of $χ_t$-perfect graphs of $\mathcal{MG}_t$ by a set of forbidden induced subgraphs. We also discuss some complexity problems for the class of $χ_t$-critical graphs.
