Products of three conjugacy classes in the alternating group
We prove that for $δ$ small, $n$ large, and any three conjugacy classes $C_{1},C_{2},C_{3}$ of $G=\mathrm{Alt}(n)$ of size at least $|G|^{1-δ}$ we have $C_{1}C_{2}C_{3}=G$.
The result provides a positive answer to Problem 20.23 of the Kourovka Notebook [KM22], improves theorems of Garonzi and Maróti [GM21] (using $4$ classes) and Rodgers [Rod02] (using larger classes), complements the known result for $G$ a simple group of Lie type [MP21] [LST24] [FM25], and is tight in several senses. Furthermore, since no character theory is involved, the proof can be used in principle to build a constructive algorithm that, given $g\in G$, outputs $c_{i}\in C_{i}$ such that $c_{1}c_{2}c_{3}=g$.
On flag-transitive automorphism groups of $2$-designs with $λ$ prime
In this article, we study $2$-$(v,k,λ)$ designs $\mathcal{D}$ with $λ$ prime admitting flag-transitive and point-primitive almost simple automorphism groups $G$ with socle $T$ a finite exceptional simple group or a sporadic simple groups. If the socle of $G$ is a finite exceptional simple group, then we prove that $\mathcal{D}$ is isomorphic to one of two infinite families of $2$-designs with point-primitive automorphism groups, one is the Suzuki-Tits ovoid design with parameter set $(v,b,r,k,λ)=(q^{2}+1,q^{2}(q^{2}+1)/(q-1),q^{2},q,q-1)$ design, where $q-1$ is a Mersenne prime, and the other is newly constructed in this paper and has parameter set $(v,b,r,k,λ)=(q^{3}(q^{3}-1)/2,(q+1)(q^{6}-1),(q+1)(q^{3}+1),q^{3}/2,q+1)$, where $q+1$ a Fermat prime. If $T$ is a sporadic simple group, then we show that $\mathcal{D}$ is isomorphic to a unique design admitting a point-primitive automorphism group with parameter set $(v,b,r,k,λ)=(176,1100,50,2)$, $(12,22,11,6,5)$ or $(22,77,21,6,5)$.
Fixers and stabilizers for Ree groups
Let $G$ be a finite permutation group on $Ω,$ a subgroup $K\leqslant G$ is called a fixer if each element in $K$ fixes some element in $Ω.$ In this paper, we characterize fixers $K$ with $|K|\geqslant |G_ω|$ for each primitive action of almost simple group $G$ with socle ${}^2G_2(q).$
On 3-isoregularity of multicirculants
A graph is said to be $k$-{\em isoregular} if any two vertex subsets of cardinality at most $k$, that induce subgraphs of the same isomorphism type, have the same number of neighbors. It is shown that no $3$-isoregular bicirculant (and more generally, no locally $3$-isoregular bicirculant) of order twice an odd number exists. Further, partial results for bicirculants of order twice an even number as well as tricirculants of specific orders, are also obtained. Since $3$-isoregular graphs are necessarily strongly regular, the above result about bicirculants, among other, brings us a step closer to obtaining a direct proof of a classical consequence of the Classification of Finite Simple Groups that no simply primitive group of degree twice a prime exists for primes greater than $5$.
Which coprime graphs are divisor graphs?
For a finite group $G$, the coprime graph $Γ(G)$ of $G$ is a graph with vertex set $G$, in which two distinct vertices $a$ and $b$ are adjacent if the order of $a$ and the order of $b$ are coprime. In this paper, we first give a characterization for which generalized lexicographic products are divisor graphs. As applications, we show that every of power graph, reduced power graph and order graph is a divisor graph, which also implies the main result in [N. Takshak, A. Sehgal, A. Malik, Power graph of a finite group is always divisor graph, Asian-Eur. J. Math. 16 (2023), ID: 2250236]. Then, we prove that the coprime graph of a group is a generalized lexicographic product, and give two characterizations for which coprime graphs are divisor graphs. We also describe the groups $G$ with $|π(G)|\le 4$, whose coprime graph is a divisor graph. Finally, we classify the finite groups $G$ so that $Γ(G)$ is a divisor graph if $G$ is a nilpotent group, a dihedral group, a generalized quaternion group, a symmetric group, an alternating group, a direct product of two non-trivial groups, and a sporadic simple group.
On symmetric Cayley graphs of valency thirteen
A Cayley graph $\Ga=\Cay(G,S)$ is said to be normal if the right-regular representation of $G$ is normal in $\Aut\Ga$. In this paper, we investigate the normality problem of the connected 13-valent symmetric Cayley graphs $\Ga$ of finite nonabelian simple groups $G$, where the vertex stabilizer $\A_v$ is soluble for $\A=\Aut\Ga$ and $v\in V\Ga$. We prove that $\Ga$ is either normal or $G=\A_{12}$, $\A_{38}$, $\A_{116}$, $\A_{207}$, $\A_{311}$, $\A_{935}$ or $\A_{1871}$. Further, 13-valent symmetric non-normal Cayley graphs of $\A_{38}$, $\A_{116}$ and $\A_{207}$ are constructed. This provides some more examples of non-normal 13-valent symmetric Cayley graphs of finite nonabelian simple groups since such graph (of valency 13) was first constructed by Fang, Ma and Wang in (J. Comb. Theory A 118, 1039--1051, 2011).

Let $G$ be a permutation group on the finite set $Ω$. We prove various results about partitions of $Ω$ whose stabilizers have good properties. In particular, in every solvable permutation group there is a set-stabilizer whose orbits have length at most $6$, which is best possible and answers two questions of Babai. Every solvable maximal subgroup of any almost simple group has derived length at most $10$, which is best possible. In every primitive group with solvable stabilizer, there are two points whose stabilizer has derived length bounded by an absolute constant.
Symmetric Cayley graphs on non-abelian simple groups of valency 7
Let $Γ$ be a connected $7$-valent symmetric Cayley graph on a finite non-abelian simple group $G$. If $Γ$ is not normal, Li {\em et al.} [On 7-valent symmetric Cayley graphs of finite simple groups, J. Algebraic Combin. 56 (2022) 1097-1118] characterised the group pairs $(\mathrm{soc}(\mathrm{Aut}(Γ)/K),GK/K)$, where $K$ is a maximal intransitive normal subgroup of $\mathrm{Aut}(Γ)$. In this paper, we improve this result by proving that if $Γ$ is not normal, then $\mathrm{Aut}(Γ)$ contains an arc-transitive non-abelian simple normal subgroup $T$ such that $G<T$ and $(T,G)=(\mathrm{A}_{n},\mathrm{A}_{n-1})$ with $n=7$, $3\cdot 7$, $3^2\cdot 7$, $2^2\cdot 3\cdot 7$, $2^3\cdot3\cdot7$, $2^3\cdot3^2\cdot5\cdot7$, $2^4\cdot3^2\cdot5\cdot7$, $2^6\cdot3\cdot7$, $2^7\cdot3\cdot7$, $2^6\cdot3^2\cdot7$, $2^6\cdot3^4\cdot5^2\cdot7$, $2^8\cdot3^4\cdot5^2\cdot7$, $2^7\cdot3^4\cdot5^2\cdot7$, $2^{10}\cdot3^2\cdot7$, $2^{24}\cdot3^2\cdot7$. Furthermore, $\mathrm{soc}(\mathrm{Aut}(Γ)/R)=(T\times R)/R$, where $R$ is the largest solvable normal subgroup of $\mathrm{Aut}(Γ)$.
Writing finite simple groups of Lie type as products of subset conjugates
The Liebeck-Nikolov-Shalev conjecture [LNS12] asserts that, for any finite simple non-abelian group $G$ and any set $A\subseteq G$ with $|A|\geq 2$, $G$ is the product of at most $N\frac{\log|G|}{\log|A|}$ conjugates of $A$, for some absolute constant $N$.
For $G$ of Lie type, we prove that for any $\varepsilon>0$ there is some $N_{\varepsilon}$ for which $G$ is the product of at most $N_{\varepsilon}\left(\frac{\log|G|}{\log|A|}\right)^{1+\varepsilon}$ conjugates of either $A$ or $A^{-1}$. For symmetric sets, this improves on results of Liebeck, Nikolov, and Shalev [LNS12] and Gill, Pyber, Short, and Szabó [GPSS13].
During the preparation of this paper, the proof of the Liebeck-Nikolov-Shalev conjecture was completed by Lifshitz [Lif24]. Both papers use [GLPS24] as a starting point. Lifshitz's argument uses heavy machinery from representation theory to complete the conjecture, whereas this paper achieves a more modest result by rather elementary combinatorial arguments.
Coverings of Groups, Regular Dessins, and Surfaces
A coset geometry representation of regular dessins is established, and employed to describe quotients and coverings of regular dessins and surfaces. A characterization is then given of face-quasiprimitive regular dessins as coverings of unicellular regular dessins. It shows that there are exactly three O'Nan-Scott-Praeger types of face-quasiprimitive regular dessins which are smooth coverings of unicellular regular dessins, leading to new constructions of interesting families of regular dessins. Finally, a problem of determining smooth Schur covering of simple groups is initiated by studying coverings between $\SL(2,p)$ and $\PSL(2,p)$, giving rise to interesting regular dessins like Fibonacci coverings.
Derangements in intransitive groups
Let $G$ be a nontrivial permutation group of degree $n$. If $G$ is transitive, then a theorem of Jordan states that $G$ has a derangement. Equivalently, a finite group is never the union of conjugates of a proper subgroup. If $G$ is intransitive, then $G$ may fail to have a derangement, and this can happen even if $G$ has only two orbits, both of which have size $(1/2+o(1))n$. However, we conjecture that if $G$ has two orbits of size exactly $n/2$ then $G$ does have a derangement, and we prove this conjecture when $G$ acts primitively on at least one of the orbits. Equivalently, we conjecture that a finite group is never the union of conjugates of two proper subgroups of the same order, and we prove this conjecture when at least one of the subgroups is maximal. (Feldman also implicitly raised this conjecture on StackExchange.) We also prove the conjecture for soluble groups, almost simple groups and groups of order at most 50000, and we reduce the conjecture to perfect groups. Along the way, we prove a linear variant on Isbell's conjecture regarding derangements of prime-power order, and we highlight connections with intersecting families of permutations and roots of polynomials modulo primes.
Vertex-primitive s-arc-transitive digraphs of symplectic groups
A digraph is $s$-arc-transitive if its automorphism group is transitive on directed paths with $s$ edges, that is, on $s$-arcs. Although infinite families of finite $s$-arc transitive digraphs of arbitrary valency were constructed by the third author in 1989, existence of a vertex-primitive $2$-arc-transitive digraph was not known until an infinite family was constructed by the second author with Li and Xia in 2017. This led to a conjecture by the second author and Xia in 2018 that, for a finite vertex-primitive $s$-arc-transitive digraph, $s$ is at most $2$, together with their proof that it is sufficient to prove the conjecture for digraphs with an almost simple group of automorphisms. This paper confirms the conjecture for finite symplectic groups.
Completing the proof of the Liebeck--Nikolov--Shalev conjecture
Liebeck, Nikolov, and Shalev conjectured the existence of an absolute constant $C>0$, such that for every subset $A$ of a finite simple group $G$ with $|A|\ge 2$, there exists $C\log|G|/\log|A|$ conjugates of $A$ whose product is $G$. This paper is a companion to \cite{GLPS}, and together they prove the conjecture.
To prove the conjecture, we establish the following skew-product theorem. We show that there exists $ c > 0 $ such that for all $ ε> 0 $ and subsets $ A, B \subseteq G $ of finite simple groups of Lie type, if $ |B| < |G|^{1 - ε} $, then $ |A^σ B| > |B||A|^{c ε} $ for some $ σ\in G $. This result, along with its more involved analogue for alternating groups, constitutes the main contribution of this paper.
Our proof leverages deep results from character theory alongside the probabilistic method.
Some $3$-designs invariant under $2.PΣL(2,49).$
We construct a ternary [49,25,7] code from the row span of a Jacobsthal matrix. It is equivalent to a Generalized Quadratic Residue (GQR) code in the sense of van Lint and MacWilliams (1978). These codes are the abelian generalizations of the quadratic residue (QR) codes which are cyclic. The union of the [50,25,8] extension of the said code and its dual supports a 3-(50,14,1248) design. The automorphism group of the latter design is a double cover of the permutation part of the automorphism group of the [50,25,8] code, which is isomorphic to $PΣL(2,49).$ Other weights in this code, other GQR codes, and other QR codes yield other 3-designs by the same process. A simple group action argument is provided to explain this behaviour of isodual codes.
Expanders and growth of normal subsets in finite simple groups of Lie type
We show that some classical results on expander graphs imply growth results on normal subsets in finite simple groups. As one application, it is shown that given a nontrivial normal subset $ A $ of a finite simple group $ G $ of Lie type of bounded rank, we either have $ G \setminus \{ 1 \} \subseteq A^2 $ or $ |A^2| \geq |A|^{1+ε} $, for $ ε> 0 $. This improves a result of Gill, Pyber, Short and Szabó, and partially resolves a question of Pyber from the Kourovka notebook. We also propose a variant of Gowers' trick for two subsets, and give applications to products of large subsets in groups of Lie type, improving some results of Larsen, Shalev and Tiep.
Maps, simple groups, and arc-transitive graphs
We determine all factorisations $X=AB$, where $X$ is a finite almost simple group and $A,B$ are core-free subgroups such that $A\cap B$ is cyclic or dihedral. As a main application, we classify the graphs $Γ$ admitting an almost simple arc-transitive group $X$ of automorphisms, such that $Γ$ has a 2-cell embedding as a map on a closed surface admitting a core-free arc-transitive subgroup $G$ of $X$. We prove that apart from the case where $X$ and $G$ have socles $A_n$ and $A_{n-1}$ respectively, the only such graphs are the complete graphs $K_n$ with $n$ a prime power, the Johnson graphs $J(n,2)$ with $n-1$ a prime power, and 14 further graphs. In the exceptional case, we construct infinitely many graph embeddings.
Dihedral-product groups of nonabelian simple groups
Given a finite group $G$, a group $X$ is called a dihedral-product group of $G$ if $X=GD$ where $D$ is a finite dihedral group. In particular, it is called a dihedral-skew product group of $G$ if $G\cap D=1$ and $D$ has a trivial core in $X$. In this paper, dihedral-skew product groups of all nonabelian simple groups are classified and dihedral-product groups of all nonabelian simple groups are characterized.
Probabilistic Generation of Finite Almost Simple Groups
We prove that if G is a sufficiently large finite almost simple group of Lie type, then given a fixed nontrivial element x in G and a coset of G modulo its socle, the probability that x and a random element of the coset generate a subgroup containing the socle is uniformly bounded away from 0 (and goes to 1 if the field size goes to infinity). This is new even if G is simple. Together with results of Lucchini and Burness--Guralnick--Harper, this proves a conjecture of Lucchini and has an application to profinite groups. A key step in the proof is the determination of the limits for the proportion of elements in a classical group which fix no subspace of any bounded dimension.
Locally primitive block designs
A locally primitive 2-design is a 2-design admitting an automorphism group $G$ with primitive local actions. It is proved that $G$ is point-primitive, and either $G$ is an almost simple group, or $G$ acting on the points is an affine group.

We show that every finite simple group is generated invariably by a Sylow subgroup and a cyclic group. It follows that that the order complex of the coset poset of an arbitrary finite group has nontrivial reduced rational homology.
