In 2008, Schneider and Van Maldeghem proved that if a group acts flag-transitively, point-primitively, and line-primitively on a generalised hexagon or generalised octagon, then it is an almost simple group of Lie type. We show that point-primitivity is sufficient for the same conclusion, regardless of the action on lines or flags. This result narrows the search for generalised hexagons or octagons with point- or line-primitive collineation groups beyond the classical examples, namely the two generalised hexagons and one generalised octagon admitting the Lie type groups $\mathsf{G}_2(q)$, $\,^3\mathsf{D}_4(q)$, and $\,^2\mathsf{F}_4(q)$, respectively.

Let $G$ be a finite group, let $π(G)$ be the set of prime divisors of $|G|$ and let $Γ(G)$ be the prime graph of $G$. This graph has vertex set $π(G)$, and two vertices $r$ and $s$ are adjacent if and only if $G$ contains an element of order $rs$. Many properties of these graphs have been studied in recent years, with a particular focus on the prime graphs of finite simple groups. In this note, we determine the pairs $(G,H)$, where $G$ is simple and $H$ is a proper subgroup of $G$ such that $Γ(G) = Γ(H)$.

A simple undirected graph is weakly $G$-locally projective, for a group of automorphisms $G$, if for each vertex $x$, the stabiliser $G(x)$ induces on the set of vertices adjacent to $x$ a doubly transitive action with socle the projective group $L_{n_x}(q_x)$ for an integer $n_x$ and a prime power $q_x$. It is $G$-locally projective if in addition $G$ is vertex transitive. A theorem of Trofimov reduces the classification of the $G$-locally projective graphs to the case where the distance factors are as in one of the known examples. Although an analogue of Trofimov's result is not yet available for weakly locally projective graphs, we would like to begin a program of characterising some of the remarkable examples. We show that if a graph is weakly locally projective with each $q_x =2$ and $n_x = 2$ or $3$, and if the distance factors are as in the examples arising from the rank 3 tilde geometries of the groups $M_{24}$ and $He$, then up to isomorphism there are exactly two possible amalgams. Moreover, we consider an infinite family of amalgams of type $\mathcal{U}_n$ (where each $q_x=2$ and $n=n_x+1\geq 4$) and prove that if $n\geq 5$ there is a unique amalgam of type $\mathcal{U}_n$ and it is unfaithful, whereas if $n=4$ then there are exactly four amalgams of type $\mathcal{U}_4$, precisely two of which are faithful, namely the ones related to $M_{24}$ and $He$, and one other which has faithful completion $A_{16}$.

Here we study the automorphism groups of $1$-designs constructed from finite nonabelian simple groups by using two methods presented in Moori (Information Security, Coding Theory and Related Combinatorics, 2011). We obtain some general results for both and improve one of these methods. In an application to the sporadic Mathieu groups $M_{n}$, we are able to retrieve the Steiner systems $S(t,t+3,n)$ where $(n,t)\in\{(22,3),(23,4),(24,5)\}$.

We conjecture that if $G$ is a finite primitive group and if $g$ is an element of $G$, then either the element $g$ has a cycle of length equal to its order, or for some $r,m$ and $k$, the group $G\leq S_m\wr S_r$, preserving a product structure of $r$ direct copies of the natural action of $S_m$ or $A_m$ on $k$-sets. In this paper we reduce this conjecture to the case that $G$ is an almost simple group with socle a classical group.

We show that random Cayley graphs of finite simple (or semisimple) groups of Lie type of fixed rank are expanders. The proofs are based on the Bourgain-Gamburd method and on the main result of our companion paper, establishing strongly dense subgroups in simple algebraic groups.
Derangements in Subspace Actions of Finite Classical Groups

This is the third in a series of papers in which we prove a conjecture of Boston and Shalev that the proportion of derangements (fixed point free elements) is bounded away from zero for transitive actions of finite simple groups on a set of size greater than one. This paper treats the case of primitive subspace actions. It is also shown that if the dimension and codimension of the subspace go to infinity, then the proportion of derangements goes to one. Similar results are proved for elements in finite classical groups in cosets of the simple group. The results in this paper have applications to probabilistic generation of finite simple groups and maps between varieties over finite fields.

For every infinite sequence of simple groups of Lie type of growing rank we exhibit connected Cayley graphs of degree at most 10 such that the isoperimetric number of these graphs converges to 0. This proves that these graphs do not form a family of expanders.
Quasirandom group actions

Let $G$ be a finite group acting transitively on a set $Ω$. We study what it means for this action to be {\it quasirandom}, thereby generalizing Gowers' study of quasirandomness in groups. We connect this notion of quasirandomness to an upper bound for the convolution of functions associated with the action of $G$ on $Ω$. This convolution bound allows us to give sufficient conditions such that sets $S,T\subset G$ and $Γ\subseteq Ω$ contain elements $s\in S, t\in T, γ\inΓ$ such that $s(γ)=t$. Other consequences include an analogue of `the Gowers trick' of Nikolov and Pyber for general group actions, a sum-product type theorem for large subsets of a finite field, as well as applications to expanders and to the study of the diameter and width of a finite simple group.
On the diameter of permutation groups

Given a finite group $G$ and a set $A$ of generators, the diameter diam$(Γ(G,A))$ of the Cayley graph $Γ(G,A)$ is the smallest $\ell$ such that every element of $G$ can be expressed as a word of length at most $\ell$ in $A \cup A^{-1}$. We are concerned with bounding diam(G):= $\max_A$ diam$(Γ(G,A))$.
It has long been conjectured that the diameter of the symmetric group of degree $n$ is polynomially bounded in $n$, but the best previously known upper bound was exponential in $\sqrt{n \log n}$. We give a quasipolynomial upper bound, namely, \[\text{diam}(G) = \exp(O((\log n)^4 \log\log n)) = \exp((\log \log |G|)^{O(1)})\] for G = Sym(n) or G = \Alt(n), where the implied constants are absolute. This addresses a key open case of Babai's conjecture on diameters of simple groups. By standard results, our bound also implies a quasipolynomial upper bound on the diameter of all transitive permutation groups of degree $n$.

We describe a construction of an algebra over the field of order 2 starting from a conjugacy class of 3-transpositions in a group. In particular, we determine which simple Lie algebras arise by this construction. Among other things, this construction yields a natural embedding of the sporadic simple group $\Fi{22}$ in the group $^2E_6(2)$.
Bounding the size of a vertex-stabiliser in a finite vertex-transitive graph

In this paper we discuss a method for bounding the size of the stabiliser of a vertex in a $G$-vertex-transitive graph $Γ$. In the main result the group $G$ is quasiprimitive or biquasiprimitive on the vertices of $Γ$, and we obtain a genuine reduction to the case where $G$ is a nonabelian simple group.
Using normal quotient techniques developed by the first author, the main theorem applies to general $G$-vertex-transitive graphs which are $G$-locally primitive (respectively, $G$-locally quasiprimitive), that is, the stabiliser $G_α$ of a vertex $α$ acts primitively (respectively quasiprimitively) on the set of vertices adjacent to $α$. We discuss how our results may be used to investigate conjectures by Richard Weiss (in 1978) and the first author (in 1998) that the order of $G_α$ is bounded above by some function depending only on the valency of $Γ$, when $Γ$ is $G$-locally primitive or $G$-locally quasiprimitive, respectively.

We show that pairs of generators for the family Sz(q) of Suzuki groups may be selected so that the corresponding Cayley graphs are expanders. By combining this with several deep works of Kassabov, Lubotzky and Nikolov, this establishes that the family of all non-abelian finite simple groups can be made into expanders in a uniform fashion.
Lie theory of finite simple groups and the Roth property
In noncommutative geometry a `Lie algebra' or bidirectional bicovariant differential calculus on a finite group is provided by a choice of an ad-stable generating subset C stable under inversion. We study the associated Killing form. For the universal calculus associated to C=G \ {e} we show that the magnitude of the Killing form μ=\sum_{a,b\in C}K^{-1}_{a,b} is defined for all finite groups (even when K is not invertible) and that a finite group is Roth, meaning its conjugation representation contains every irreducible, iff μ is not equal to 1/(N-1), where N is the number of conjugacy classes. We show further that the Killing form is invertible in the Roth case, and that the Killing form restricted to the (N-1)-dimensional subspace of invariant vectors is invertible iff the finite group is almost-Roth group (meaning its conjugation representation has at most one missing irreducible). It is known that most finite simple groups are Roth and that all are almost Roth. At the other extreme from the universal calculus we prove that the generating conjugacy class in the case of the dihedral groups D_{2n} with n odd has invertible Killing form, and the same for the 2-cycles conjugacy class in any S_n. We also compute some eigenvalues of the Killing form in the case of the n-cycles class in S_n. Finally, we verify invertibility of the Killing forms of all real conjugacy classes in all nonabelian finite simple groups to order 75,000, by computer, and we conjecture this to extend to all nonabelian finite simple groups.

Block-transitive Steiner $t$-designs form a central part of the study of highly symmetric combinatorial configurations at the interface of several disciplines, including group theory, geometry, combinatorics, coding and information theory, and cryptography. The main result of the paper settles an important open question: There exist no non-trivial examples with $t=7$ (or larger). The proof is based on the classification of the finite 3-homogeneous permutation groups, itself relying on the finite simple group classification.

The Sylow graph $Γ(G)$ of a finite group $G$ originated from recent investigations on the so--called $\mathbf{N}$--closed classes of groups. The connectivity of $Γ(G)$ was proved only few years ago, involving the classification of finite simple groups, and the structure of $G$ may be strongly restricted, once information on $Γ(G)$ are given. The first result of the present paper deals with a condition on $\mathbf{N}$--closed classes of groups. The second result deals with a computational criterion, related to the connectivity of $Γ(G)$.
The Möbius Number of the Socle of any Group
We obtain a formula for the Möbius number of the socle of any group. Specifically, the Möbius number of a direct product of simple groups is computed in terms of the Möbius numbers of the simple groups which make up the product.

We prove that if G is SL_2(F) or PSL_2(F), where F is a finite field, and A is a set of generators of G, then either |AAA| > |A|^(1+epsilon), where epsilon is an absolute positive real number, or AAA=G.
As a corollary we get that the diameter of any Cayley graph of G is Poly-Logarithmic in |G|.

We prove that if L is a finite simple group of Lie type and A a symmetric set of generators of L, then A grows i.e |AAA| > |A|^(1+epsilon) where epsilon depends only on the Lie rank of L, or AAA=L. This implies that for a family of simple groups L of Lie type the diameter of any Cayley graph is polylogarithmic in |L|. Combining our result on growth with known results of Bourgain,Gamburd and Varjú it follows that if LAMBDA is a Zariski-dense subgroup of SL(d,Z) generated by a finite symmetric set S, then for square-free moduli m which are relatively prime to some number m_0 the Cayley graphs Gamma(SL(d,m),pi_m(S)) form an expander family.

Many famous graphs are edge-primitive, for example, the Heawood graph, the Tutte--Coxeter graph and the Higman--Sims graph. In this paper we systematically analyse edge-primitive and edge-quasiprimitive graphs via the O'Nan--Scott Theorem to determine the possible edge and vertex actions of such graphs. Many interesting examples are given and we also determine all $G$-edge-primitive graphs for $G$ an almost simple group with socle $PSL(2,q)$.
