Presentations of Transversal Valuated Matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given $d$ row vectors of $n$ tropical numbers, $d<n$, the tropical Stiefel map constructs a version of their row space, whose Plücker coordinates are tropical determinants. We explicitly describe the fibers of this map. From the viewpoint of matroid theory, the tropical Stiefel map defines a generalization of transversal matroids in the valuated context, and our results are the valuated generalizations of theorems of Brualdi and Dinolt, Mason and others on the set of all set families that present a given transversal matroid. We show that a connected valuated matroid is transversal if and only if all of its connected initial matroids are. The duals of our results describe complete stable intersections via valuated strict gammoids.

Well-quasi-ordering in lattice path matroids
Lattice path matroids form a subclass of transversal matroids and were introduced by Bonin, de Mier and Noy. Transversal matroids are not well-quasi-ordered, even when the branch-width is restricted. Though lattice path matroids are not well-quasi-ordered, we prove that lattice path matroids of bounded branch-width are well-quasi-ordered.

On power ideals of transversal matroids and their "parking functions"
Published • View PublicationBIB
To a vector configuration one can associate a polynomial ideal generated by powers of linear forms, known as a power ideal, which exhibits many combinatorial features of the matroid underlying the configuration. In this note we observe that certain power ideals associated to transversal matroids are, somewhat unexpectedly, monomial. Moreover, the (monomial) basis elements of the quotient ring defined by such a power ideal can be naturally identified with the lattice points of a remarkable convex polytope: a polymatroid, also known as generalized permutohedron. We dub the exponent vectors of these monomial basis elements "parking functions" of the corresponding transversal matroid. We highlight the connection between our investigation and Stanley-Reisner theory, and relate our findings to Stanley's conjectured necessary condition on matroid $h$-vectors.

A Generalized-Polymatroid Approach to Disjoint Common Independent Sets in Two Matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we investigate the classes of matroid intersection admitting a solution for the problem of partitioning the ground set $E$ into $k$ common independent sets, where $E$ can be partitioned into $k$ independent sets in each of the two matroids. For this problem, we present a new approach building upon the generalized-polymatroid intersection theorem. We exhibit that this approach offers alternative proofs and unified understandings of previous results showing that the problem has a solution for the intersection of two laminar matroids and that of two matroids without $(k+1)$-spanned elements. Moreover, we newly show that the intersection of a laminar matroid and a matroid without $(k+1)$-spanned elements admits a solution. We also construct an example of a transversal matroid which is incompatible with the generalized-polymatroid approach.

Matching fields and lattice points of simplices
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that the Chow covectors of a linkage matching field define a bijection between certain degree vectors and lattice points, and we demonstrate how one can recover the linkage matching field from this bijection. This resolves two open questions from Sturmfels and Zelevinsky (1993) on linkage matching fields. For this, we give an explicit construction that associates a bipartite incidence graph of an ordered partition of a common set to each lattice point in a dilated simplex. Given a triangulation of a product of two simplices encoded by a set of spanning trees on a bipartite node set, we similarly prove that the bijection from left to right degree vectors of the trees is enough to recover the triangulation. As additional results, we show a cryptomorphic description of linkage matching fields and characterise the flip graph of a linkage matching field in terms of its prodsimplicial flag complex. Finally, we relate our findings to transversal matroids through the tropical Stiefel map.

A module-theoretic approach to matroids
Published in Journal of Pure and Applied Algebra 224.2 (2020) 894-916 • View PublicationBIB
Speyer recognized that matroids encode the same data as a special class of tropical linear spaces and Shaw interpreted tropically certain basic matroid constructions; additionally, Frenk developed the perspective of tropical linear spaces as modules over an idempotent semifield. All together, this provides bridges between the combinatorics of matroids, the algebra of idempotent modules, and the geometry of tropical linear spaces. The goal of this paper is to strengthen and expand these bridges by systematically developing the idempotent module theory of matroids. Applications include a geometric interpretation of strong matroid maps and the factorization theorem; a generalized notion of strong matroid maps, via an embedding of the category of matroids into a category of module homomorphisms; a monotonicity property for the stable sum and stable intersection of tropical linear spaces; a novel perspective of fundamental transversal matroids; and a tropical analogue of reduced row echelon form.

An Algorithmic Proof of the Piff--Welsh Theorem on Transversal Matroid Representations
A fundamental theorem of matroid theory establishes that a transversal matroid is representable over fields of any characteristic. It was proved in 1970 by Piff and Welsh: their proof is elegant and concise and, moveover, constructive. However it is far from being algorithmic, in terms of suggesting a step-by-step procedure for deriving a collection of vectors over a given base field representing the transversal matroid induced by a given set system. In this note we recast Piff and Welsh's proof in algorithmic form.

Expansion and contraction functors on matriods
Let $M$ be a matroid. We study the expansions of $M$ mainly to see how the combinatorial properties of $M$ and its expansions are related to each other. It is shown that $M$ is a graphic, binary or a transversal matroid if and only if an arbitrary expansion of $M$ has the same property. Then we introduce a new functor, called contraction, which acts in contrast to expansion functor. As a main result of paper, we prove that a matroid $M$ satisfies White's conjecture if and only if an arbitrary expansion of $M$ does. It follows that it suffices to focus on the contraction of a given matroid for checking whether the matroid satisfies White's conjecture. Finally, some classes of matroids satisfying White's conjecture are presented.

Facial structures of lattice path matroid polytopes
A lattice path matroid is a transversal matroid corresponding to a pair of lattice paths on the plane. A matroid base polytope is the polytope whose vertices are the incidence vectors of the bases of the given matroid. In this paper, we study facial structures of matroid base polytopes corresponding to lattice path matroids.

Lattices related to extensions of presentations of transversal matroids
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, 2017 • View PublicationBIB
For a presentation $\mathcal{A}$ of a transversal matroid $M$, we study the set $T_{\mathcal{A}}$ of single-element transversal extensions of $M$ that have presentations that extend $\mathcal{A}$; we order these extensions by the weak order. We show that $T_{\mathcal{A}}$ is a distributive lattice, and that each finite distributive lattice is isomorphic to $T_{\mathcal{A}}$ for some presentation $\mathcal{A}$ of some transversal matroid $M$. We show that $T_{\mathcal{A}}\cap T_{\mathcal{B}}$, for any two presentations $\mathcal{A}$ and $\mathcal{B}$ of $M$, is a sublattice of both $T_{\mathcal{A}}$ and $T_{\mathcal{B}}$. We prove sharp upper bounds on $|T_{\mathcal{A}}|$ for presentations $\mathcal{A}$ of rank less than $r(M)$ in the order on presentations; we also give a sharp upper bound on $|T_{\mathcal{A}}\cap T_{\mathcal{B}}|$. The main tool we introduce to study $T_{\mathcal{A}}$ is the lattice $L_{\mathcal{A}}$ of closed sets of a certain closure operator on the lattice of subsets of $\{1,2,\ldots,r(M)\}$.
Infinite Gammoids: Minors and Duality
Published • View PublicationBIB
This sequel to our paper (Infinite gammoids, 2014) considers minors and duals of infinite gammoids. We prove that a class of gammoids definable by digraphs not containing a certain type of substructure, called an outgoing comb, is minor-closed. Also, we prove that finite-rank minors of gammoids are gammoids. Furthermore, the topological gammoids introduced by Carmesin (Topological infinite gammoids, and a new Menger-type theorem for infinite graphs, 2014) are proved to coincide, as matroids, with the finitary gammoids. A corollary is that topological gammoids are minor-closed. It is a well-known fact that the dual of any finite strict gammoid is a transversal matroid. The class of alternating-comb-free strict gammoids, introduced in the prequel, contains examples which are not dual to any transversal matroid. However, we describe the duals of matroids in this class as a natural extension of transversal matroids. While finite gammoids are closed under duality, we construct a strict gammoid that is not dual to any gammoid.

Stiefel tropical linear spaces
Published • View PublicationBIB
The tropical Stiefel map associates to a tropical matrix A its tropical Pluecker vector of maximal minors, and thus a tropical linear space L(A). We call the L(A)s obtained in this way Stiefel tropical linear spaces. We prove that they are dual to certain matroid subdivisions of polytopes of transversal matroids, and we relate their combinatorics to a canonically associated tropical hyperplane arrangement. We also explore a broad connection with the secondary fan of the Newton polytope of the product of all maximal minors of a matrix. In addition, we investigate the natural parametrization of L(A) arising from the tropical linear map defined by A.

Lattice Path Matroid Polytopes
Fix two lattice paths $P$ and $Q$ from $(0,0)$ to $(m,r)$ that use East and North steps with $P $ never going above $Q$. Bonin et al. show that the lattice paths that go from $(0,0)$ to $(m,r)$ and remain bounded by $P$ and $Q$ can be identified with the bases of a particular type of transversal matroid, which we call it a lattice path matroid. In this paper, we consider properties of lattice path matroid polytopes. These are the polytopes associated to the lattice path matroids. We investigate their face structure, decomposition, triangulation, Ehrhart polynomial and volume.

Semidirect sums of matroids
Published in Annals of Combinatorics, 2015 • View PublicationBIB
For matroids M and N on disjoint sets S and T, a semidirect sum of M and N is a matroid K on the union of S and T that, like the direct sum and the free product, has the restriction of K to S equal to M and the contraction of K to T equal to N. We abstract a matrix construction to get a general matroid construction: the matroid union of any rank-preserving extension of M on the union of S and T with the direct sum of N and the rank-0 matroid on S is a semidirect sum of M and N. We study principal sums in depth; these are such matroid unions where the extension of M has each element of T added either as a loop or freely on a fixed flat of M. A second construction of semidirect sums, defined by a Higgs lift, also specializes to principal sums. We also explore what can be deduced if M and N, or certain of their semidirect sums, are transversal or fundamental transversal matroids.

Matroid Secretary for Regular and Decomposable Matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
In the matroid secretary problem we are given a stream of elements and asked to choose a set of elements that maximizes the total value of the set, subject to being an independent set of a matroid given in advance. The difficulty comes from the assumption that decisions are irrevocable: if we choose to accept an element when it is presented by the stream then we can never get rid of it, and if we choose not to accept it then we cannot later add it. Babaioff, Immorlica, and Kleinberg [SODA 2007] introduced this problem, gave O(1)-competitive algorithms for certain classes of matroids, and conjectured that every matroid admits an O(1)-competitive algorithm. However, most matroids that are known to admit an O(1)-competitive algorithm can be easily represented using graphs (e.g. graphic and transversal matroids). In particular, there is very little known about F-representable matroids (the class of matroids that can be represented as elements of a vector space over a field F), which are one of the foundational matroid classes. Moreover, most of the known techniques are as dependent on graph theory as they are on matroid theory. We go beyond graphs by giving an O(1)-competitive algorithm for regular matroids (the class of matroids that are representable over every field), and use techniques that are matroid-theoretic rather than graph-theoretic. We use the regular matroid decomposition theorem of Seymour to decompose any regular matroid into matroids which are either graphic, cographic, or isomorphic to R_{10}, and then show how to combine algorithms for these basic classes into an algorithm for regular matroids. This allows us to generalize beyond regular matroids to any class of matroids that admits such a decomposition into classes for which we already have good algorithms. In particular, we give an O(1)-competitive algorithm for the class of max-flow min-cut matroids.
Characterizations of transversal and fundamental transversal matroids
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, 2011 • View PublicationBIB
A result of Mason, as refined by Ingleton, characterizes transversal matroids as the matroids that satisfy a set of inequalities that relate the ranks of intersections and unions of nonempty sets of cyclic flats. We prove counterparts, for fundamental transversal matroids, of this and other characterizations of transversal matroids. In particular, we show that fundamental transversal matroids are precisely the matroids that yield equality in Mason's inequalities and we deduce a characterization of fundamental transversal matroids due to Brylawski from this simpler characterization.

Generalized permutohedra, h-vector of cotransversal matroids and pure O-sequences

Stanley has conjectured that the h-vector of a matroid complex is a pure O-sequence. We will prove this for cotransversal matroids by using generalized permutohedra. We construct a bijection between lattice points inside a r-dimensional convex polytope and bases of a rank r transversal matroid.

The Lattice of Cyclic Flats of a Matroid
Published in Annals of Combinatorics, 2008 • View PublicationBIB
A flat of a matroid is cyclic if it is a union of circuits. The cyclic flats of a matroid form a lattice under inclusion. We study these lattices and explore matroids from the perspective of cyclic flats. In particular, we show that every lattice is isomorphic to the lattice of cyclic flats of a matroid. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for a lattice Z of sets and a function r on Z to be the lattice of cyclic flats of a matroid and the restriction of the corresponding rank function to Z. We define cyclic width and show that this concept gives rise to minor-closed, dual-closed classes of matroids, two of which contain only transversal matroids.
