Some extremal results on K_{s,t}-free graphs
For graphs $H$ and $F$, let $\text{ex}(n,H,F)$ be the maximum possible number of copies of $H$ in an $F$-free graph on $n$ vertices. The study of this function, which generalizes the well-known Turán number of graphs, was systematically studied by Alon and Shikhelman recently. In this paper, we show that for any $m$ and $t\ge 2m-3\ge3$, \[\text{ex}(n,K_{m},K_{2,t})=Θ(n^{\frac{3}{2}}).\] This result improves some results of Alon and Shikhelman (J. Combin. Theory Ser. B, 121:146-172, 2016). We also study the $k$-partite $K_{s,t}$-free graph, we show that for any $k\ge3$ and $t\ge(k-1)(s-1)!+1$, \[\text{ex}_{χ\le k}(n,K_{s,t})\ge\frac{k-1}{2k}n^{2-1/s}+o(n^{2-1/s}).\] Moreover, we give a new construction of $3$-partite $K_{2,2t+1}$-free graphs with many edges.

A note on the Turán number of a Berge odd cycle
In this note we obtain upper bounds on the number of hyperedges in 3-uniform hypergraphs not containing a Berge cycle of given odd length. We improve the bound given by Füredi and Özkahya in 2017. The result follows from a more general theorem. We also obtain some new results for Berge cliques.

Lagrangian densities of short 3-uniform linear paths and Turán numbers of their extensions
For a fixed positive integer $n$ and an $r$-uniform hypergraph $H$, the Turán number $ex(n,H)$ is the maximum number of edges in an $H$-free $r$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices, and the Lagrangian density of $H$ is defined as $π_λ(H)=\sup \{r! λ(G) : G \;\text{is an}\; H\text{-free} \;r\text{-uniform hypergraph}\}$, where $λ(G)$ is the Lagrangian of $G$. For an $r$-uniform hypergraph $H$ on $t$ vertices, it is clear that $π_λ(H)\ge r!λ{(K_{t-1}^r)}$. We say that an $r$-uniform hypergraph $H$ on $t$ vertices is perfect if $π_λ(H)= r!λ{(K_{t-1}^r)}$. Let $P_t=\{e_1, e_2, \dots, e_t\}$ be the linear $3$-uniform path of length $t$, that is, $|e_i|=3$, $|e_i \cap e_{i+1}|=1$ and $e_i \cap e_j=\emptyset$ if $|i-j|\ge 2$. We show that $P_3$ and $P_4$ are perfect, this supports a conjecture in \cite{yanpeng} proposing that all $3$-uniform linear hypergraphs are perfect. Applying the results on Lagrangian densities, we determine the Turán numbers of their extensions.
t-wise Berge and t-heavy hypergraphs
In many proofs concerning extremal parameters of Berge hypergraphs one starts with analyzing that part of that shadow graph which is contained in many hyperedges. Capturing this phenomenon we introduce two new types of hypergraphs. A hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ is a $t$-heavy copy of a graph $F$ if there is a copy of $F$ on its vertex set such that each edge of $F$ is contained in at least $t$ hyperedges of $\mathcal{H}$. $\mathcal{H}$ is a $t$-wise Berge copy of $F$ if additionally for distinct edges of $F$ those $t$ hyperedges are distinct. We extend known upper bounds on the Turán number of Berge hypergraphs to the $t$-wise Berge hypergraphs case. We asymptotically determine the Turán number of $t$-heavy and $t$-wise Berge copies of long paths and cycles and exactly determine the Turán number of $t$-heavy and $t$-wise Berge copies of cliques. In the case of 3-uniform hypergraphs, we consider the problem in more details and obtain additional results.

Singular Ramsey and Turán numbers
We say that a subgraph $F$ of a graph $G$ is singular if the degrees $d_G(v)$ are all equal or all distinct for the vertices $v\in V(F)$. The singular Ramsey number Rs$(F)$ is the smallest positive integer $n$ such that, for every $m\geq n$, in every edge 2-coloring of $K_m$, at least one of the color classes contains $F$ as a singular subgraph. In a similar flavor, the singular Turán number Ts$(n,F)$ is defined as the maximum number of edges in a graph of order $n$, which does not contain $F$ as a singular subgraph. In this paper we initiate the study of these extremal problems. We develop methods to estimate Rs$(F)$ and Ts$(n,F)$, present tight asymptotic bounds and exact results.

Exact bipartite Turán numbers of large even cycles
Published in J. Graph Theory 97 (2021), no. 4, 642--656 • View PublicationBIB
Let the bipartite Turán number $ex(m,n,H)$ of a graph $H$ be the maximum number of edges in an $H$-free bipartite graph with two parts of sizes $m$ and $n$, respectively. In this paper, we prove that $ex(m,n,C_{2t})=(t-1)n+m-t+1$ for any positive integers $m,n,t$ with $n\geq m\geq t\geq \frac{m}{2}+1$. This confirms the rest of a conjecture of Györi \cite{G97} (in a stronger form), and improves the upper bound of $ex(m,n,C_{2t})$ obtained by Jiang and Ma \cite{JM18} for this range. We also prove a tight edge condition for consecutive even cycles in bipartite graphs, which settles a conjecture in \cite{A09}. As a main tool, for a longest cycle $C$ in a bipartite graph, we obtain an estimate on the upper bound of the number of edges which are incident to at most one vertex in $C$. Our two results generalize or sharpen a classical theorem due to Jackson \cite{J85} in different ways.

Lower bounds for rainbow Turán numbers of paths and other trees
For a fixed graph $F$, we would like to determine the maximum number of edges in a properly edge-colored graph on $n$ vertices which does not contain a rainbow copy of $F$, that is, a copy of $F$ all of whose edges receive a different color. This maximum, denoted by $ex^*(n, F)$, is the rainbow Turán number of $F$. We show that $ex^*(n,P_k)\geq \frac{k}{2}n + O(1)$ where $P_k$ is a path on $k\geq 3$ edges, generalizing a result by Maamoun and Meyniel and by Johnston, Palmer and Sarkar. We show similar bounds for brooms on $2^s-1$ edges and diameter $\leq 10$ and a few other caterpillars of small diameter.

The shifting method and generalized Turán number of matchings
Given two graphs $T$ and $F$, the maximum number of copies of $T$ in an $F$-free graph on $n$ vertices is called the generalized Turán number, denoted by $ex(n,T,F)$. When $T=K_2$, it reduces to the classical Turán number $ex(n,F)$. Let $M_{k}$ be a matching with $k$ edges and $K^{*}_{s,t}$ a graph obtained from $K_{s,t}$ by replacing the part of size $s$ by a clique of the same size. In this paper, we show that for any $s\geq 2$ and $n\geq 2k+1$, \[ ex(n,K_s,M_{k+1})=\max\left\{\binom{2k+1}{s}, \binom{k}{s}+(n-k)\binom{k}{s-1}\right\}. \] For any $s\geq 1$, $t\geq 2$ and $n\geq 2k+1$, \[ ex(n,K_{s,t}^*,M_{k+1})=\max\left\{\binom{2k+1}{s+t}\binom{s+t}{t}, \binom{k}{s}\binom{n-s}{t}+(n-k)\binom{k}{s+t-1}\binom{s+t-1}{t}\right\}. \] Moreover, we also study the bipartite case of the problem. Let $ex_{bip}(n,T,F)$ be the maximum possible number of copies of $T$ in an $F$-free bipartite graph with each part of size $n$. We prove that for any $s,t\geq 1$ and $n\geq k$, \[ ex_{bip}(n,K_{s,t},M_{k+1})=\left\{ \begin{aligned} &\binom{k}{s}\binom{n}{t}+\binom{k}{t}\binom{n}{s}, & \quad s\neq t, &\binom{k}{s}\binom{n}{s},&\quad s=t. \end{aligned} \right. \] Our proof is mainly based on the shifting method.

The Turán problem for a family of tight linear forests
Let $\mathcal{F}$ be a family of $r$-graphs. The Turán number $ex_r(n;\mathcal{F})$ is defined to be the maximum number of edges in an $r$-graph of order $n$ that is $\mathcal{F}$-free. The famous Erdős Matching Conjecture shows that \[ ex_r(n,M_{k+1}^{(r)})= \max\left\{\binom{rk+r-1}{r},\binom{n}{r}-\binom{n-k}{r}\right\}, \] where $M_{k+1}^{(r)}$ represents the $r$-graph consisting of $k+1$ disjoint edges. Motivated by this conjecture, we consider the Turán problem for tight linear forests. A tight linear forest is an $r$-graph whose connected components are all tight paths or isolated vertices. Let $\mathcal{L}_{n,k}^{(r)}$ be the family of all tight linear forests of order $n$ with $k$ edges in $r$-graphs. In this paper, we prove that for sufficiently large $n$, \[ ex_r(n;\mathcal{L}_{n,k}^{(r)})=\max\left\{\binom{k}{r}, \binom{n}{r}-\binom{n-\left\lfloor (k-1)/r\right \rfloor}{r}\right\}+d, \] where $d=o(n^r)$ and if $r=3$ and $k=cn$ with $0<c<1$, if $r\geq 4$ and $k=cn$ with $0<c<1/2$. The proof is based on the weak regularity lemma for hypergraphs. We also conjecture that for arbitrary $k$ satisfying $k \equiv 1\ (mod\ r)$, the error term $d$ in the above result equals 0. We prove that the proposed conjecture implies the Erdős Matching Conjecture directly.

The formula for Turán number of spanning linear forests
Published in Discrete Mathematics Volume 343, Issue 8, August 2020, 111924 • View PublicationBIB
Let $\mathcal{F}$ be a family of graphs. The Turán number $ex(n;\mathcal{F})$ is defined to be the maximum number of edges in a graph of order $n$ that is $\mathcal{F}$-free. In 1959, Erdős and Gallai determined the Turán number of $M_{k+1}$ (a matching of size $k+1$) as follows: \[ ex(n;M_{k+1})= \max\left\{\binom{2k+1}{2},\binom{n}{2}-\binom{n-k}{2}\right\}. \] Since then, there has been a lot of research on Turán number of linear forests. A linear forest is a graph whose connected components are all paths or isolated vertices. Let $\mathcal{L}_{n,k}$ be the family of all linear forests of order $n$ with $k$ edges. In this paper, we prove that \[ ex(n;\mathcal{L}_{n,k})= \max \left\{\binom{k}{2},\binom{n}{2}-\binom{n-\left\lfloor \frac{k-1}{2}\right \rfloor}{2}+ c \right\}, \] where $c=0$ if $k$ is odd and $c=1$ otherwise. This determines the maximum number of edges in a non-Hamiltonian graph with given Hamiltonian completion number and also solves two open problems in \cite{WY} as special cases. Moreover, we show that our main theorem implies Erdős-Gallai Theorem and also gives a short new proof for it by the closure and counting techniques. Finally, we generalize our theorem to a conjecture which implies the famous Erdős Matching Conjecture.

Many $H$-copies in graphs with a forbidden tree
Published • View PublicationBIB
For graphs $H$ and $F$, let $\operatorname{ex}(n, H, F)$ be the maximum possible number of copies of $H$ in an $F$-free graph on $n$ vertices. The study of this function, which generalises the well-studied Turán numbers of graphs, was initiated recently by Alon and Shikhelman. We show that if $F$ is a tree then $\operatorname{ex}(n, H, F) = Θ(n^r)$ for some integer $r = r(H, F)$, thus answering one of their questions.

Unavoidable chromatic patterns in 2-colorings of the complete graph
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider unavoidable chromatic patterns in $2$-colorings of the edges of the complete graph. Several such problems are explored being a junction point between Ramsey theory, extremal graph theory (Turán type problems), zero-sum Ramsey theory, and interpolation theorems in graph theory. A role-model of these problems is the following: Let $G$ be a graph with $e(G)$ edges. We say that $G$ is omnitonal if there exists a function ${\rm ot}(n,G)$ such that the following holds true for $n$ sufficiently large: For any $2$-coloring $f: E(K_n) \to \{red, blue \}$ such that there are more than ${\rm ot}(n,G)$ edges from each color, and for any pair of non-negative integers $r$ and $b$ with $r+b = e(G)$, there is a copy of $G$ in $K_n$ with exactly $r$ red edges and $b$ blue edges. We give a structural characterization of omnitonal graphs from which we deduce that omnitonal graphs are, in particular, bipartite graphs, and prove further that, for an omnitonal graph $G$, ${\rm ot}(n,G) = \mathcal{O}(n^{2 - \frac{1}{m}})$, where $m = m(G)$ depends only on $G$. We also present a class of graphs for which ${\rm ot}(n,G) = ex(n,G)$, the celebrated Turán numbers. Many more results and problems of similar flavor are presented.
Sidon sets and $C_4$-saturated graphs
The problem of determining the Turán number of $C_4$ is a well studied problem that dates back to a paper of Erdös from 1938. It is known that Sidon sets can be used to construct $C_4$-free graphs. If $\A$ is a Sidon set in the abelian group $X$, the sum graph $G_{X, \A}$ with vertex set $X$ and edges set $E=\{\{x, y\}:x\neq y, x+y\in \A\}$ is $C_4$-free. Using the sum graph of a Sidon set of type Singer we verify a conjecture of Erdös and Simonovits concerning the number of copies of $C_4$ in a graph with $ex(q^2+q+1, C_4)+1$ edges. Further, we give a sufficient condition for the sum graph of a Sidon set to be $C_4$-saturated and describe new $C_4$-saturated graphs.

The Turán number of Berge-K_4 in triple systems
A Berge-$K_4$ in a triple system is a configuration with four vertices $v_1,v_2,v_3,v_4$ and six distinct triples $\{e_{ij}: 1\le i< j \le 4\}$ such that $\{v_i,v_j\}\subset e_{ij}$ for every $1\le i<j\le 4$. We denote by $\cal{B}$ the set of Berge-$K_4$ configurations. A triple system is $\cal{B}$-free if it does not contain any member of $\cal{B}$. We prove that the maximum number of triples in a $\cal{B}$-free triple system on $n\ge 6$ points is obtained by the balanced complete $3$-partite triple system: all triples $\{abc: a\in A, b\in B, c\in C\}$ where $A,B,C$ is a partition of $n$ points with $$\left\lfloor{n\over 3}\right\rfloor=|A|\le |B|\le |C|=\left\lceil{n\over 3}\right\rceil.$$

The Turán Number for Spanning Linear Forests
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a set of graphs $\mathcal{F}$, the extremal number $ex(n;\mathcal{F})$ is the maximum number of edges in a graph of order $n$ not containing any subgraph isomorphic to some graph in $\mathcal{F}$. If $\mathcal{F}$ contains a graph on $n$ vertices, then we often call the problem a spanning Turán problem. A linear forest is a graph whose connected components are all paths and isolated vertices. In this paper, we let $\mathcal{L}_n^k$ be the set of all linear forests of order $n$ with at least $n-k+1$ edges. We prove that when $n\geq 3k$ and $k\geq 2$, \[ ex(n;\mathcal{L}_n^k)=\binom{n-k+1}{2}+ O(k^2). \] Clearly, the result is interesting when $k=o(n)$.

On the maximum number of odd cycles in graphs without smaller odd cycles

We prove that for each odd integer $k \geq 7$, every graph on $n$ vertices without odd cycles of length less than $k$ contains at most $(n/k)^k$ cycles of length $k$. This generalizes the previous results on the maximum number of pentagons in triangle-free graphs, conjectured by Erdős in 1984, and asymptotically determines the generalized Turán number $\mathrm{ex}(n,C_k,C_{k-2})$ for odd $k$. In contrary to the previous results on the pentagon case, our proof is not computer-assisted.
On the Rainbow Turán number of paths

Let $F$ be a fixed graph. The rainbow Turán number of $F$ is defined as the maximum number of edges in a graph on $n$ vertices that has a proper edge-coloring with no rainbow copy of $F$ (where a rainbow copy of $F$ means a copy of $F$ all of whose edges have different colours). The systematic study of such problems was initiated by Keevash, Mubayi, Sudakov and Verstraëte. In this paper, we show that the rainbow Turán number of a path with $k+1$ edges is less than $\left(\frac{9k}{7}+2\right) n$, improving an earlier estimate of Johnston, Palmer and Sarkar.

Some sharp results on the generalized Turán numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
For graphs $T, H$, let $ex(n,T,H)$ denote the maximum number of copies of $T$ in an $n$-vertex $H$-free graph. In this paper we prove some sharp results on this generalization of Turán numbers, where our focus is for the graphs $T,H$ satisfying $χ(T)<χ(H)$. This can be dated back to Erdős, where he generalized the celebrated Turán's theorem by showing that for any $r\geq m$, the Turán graph $T_r(n)$ uniquely attains $ex(n,K_m,K_{r+1})$. For general graphs $H$ with $χ(H)=r+1>m$, Alon and Shikhelman showed that $ex(n,K_m,H)=\binom{r}{m}(\frac{n}{r})^m+o(n^m)$. Here we determine this error term $o(n^m)$ up to a constant factor. We prove that $ex(n,K_m,H)=\binom{r}{m}(\frac{n}{r})^m+biex(n,H)\cdotΘ(n^{m-2})$, where $biex(n,H)$ is the Turán number of the decomposition family of $H$. As a special case, we extend Erdős' result, by showing that $T_r(n)$ uniquely attains $ex(n,K_m,H)$ for any edge-critical graph $H$. We also consider $T$ being non-clique, where even the simplest case seems to be intricate. Following from a more general result, we show that for all $s\leq t$, $T_2(n)$ maximizes the number of $K_{s,t}$ in $n$-vertex triangle-free graphs if and only if $t<s+\frac12+\sqrt{2s+\frac14}$.

Extensions of Erdős-Gallai Theorem and Luo's Theorem with Applications
Published in Combinatorics, Probability and Computing (2020), 29, pp. 128-136 • View PublicationBIB
The famous Erdős-Gallai Theorem on the Turán number of paths states that every graph with $n$ vertices and $m$ edges contains a path with at least $\frac{2m}{n}$ edges. In this note, we first establish a simple but novel extension of the Erdős-Gallai Theorem by proving that every graph $G$ contains a path with at least $\frac{(s+1)N_{s+1}(G)}{N_{s}(G)}+s-1$ edges, where $N_j(G)$ denotes the number of $j$-cliques in $G$ for $1\leq j\leqω(G)$. We also construct a family of graphs which shows our extension improves the estimate given by Erdős-Gallai Theorem. Among applications, we show, for example, that the main results of \cite{L17}, which are on the maximum possible number of $s$-cliques in an $n$-vertex graph without a path with $l$ vertices (and without cycles of length at least $c$), can be easily deduced from this extension. Indeed, to prove these results, Luo \cite{L17} generalized a classical theorem of Kopylov and established a tight upper bound on the number of $s$-cliques in an $n$-vertex 2-connected graph with circumference less than $c$. We prove a similar result for an $n$-vertex 2-connected graph with circumference less than $c$ and large minimum degree. We conclude this paper with an application of our results to a problem from spectral extremal graph theory on consecutive lengths of cycles in graphs.
