Exchange Properties of M-natural-concave Set Functions and Valuated Matroids
This is a survey article on the exchange properties characterizing M-natural-concave set functions and valuated matroids (M-concave set functions). The objective of this paper is to collect related results scattered in the literature and to give (reasonably) self-contained elementary proofs for them.

Matroids over Skew Tracts
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics, volume 109, March 2023, 103643 • View PublicationBIB
Matroids over tracts provide an algebraic framework simultaneously generalizing the notions of matroids, oriented matroids, and valuated matroids, presented by Baker and Bowler. Pendavingh partially extended this theory to skew hyperfields and presented a new axiom system in terms of quasi-Plücker coordinates. We present a theory of matroids over skew tracts, which generalizes both the theory of matroids over tracts and the theory of weak matroids over skew hyperfields developed by Pendavingh. We give several cryptomorphic axiom systems for such matroids in terms of circuits, quasi-Plücker coordinates and dual pairs.

Compression of M${}^\natural$-convex Functions -- Flag Matroids and Valuated Permutohedra
Published • View PublicationBIB
Murota (1998) and Murota and Shioura (1999) introduced concepts of M-convex function and M${}^\natural$-convex function as discrete convex functions, which are generalizations of valuated matroids due to Dress and Wenzel (1992). In the present paper we consider a new operation defined by a convolution of sections of an M${}^\natural$-convex function that transforms the given M${}^\natural$-convex function to an M-convex function, which we call a compression of an M${}^\natural$-convex function. For the class of valuated generalized matroids, which are special M${}^\natural$-convex functions, the compression induces a valuated permutohedron together with a decomposition of the valuated generalized matroid into flag-matroid strips, each corresponding to a maximal linearity domain of the induced valuated permutohedron. We examine the details of the structure of flag-matroid strips and the induced valuated permutohedron by means of discrete convex analysis of Murota.

Optimal matroid bases with intersection constraints: Valuated matroids, M-convex functions, and their applications
Published • View PublicationBIB
For two matroids $M_1$ and $M_2$ with the same ground set $V$ and two cost functions $w_1$ and $w_2$ on $2^V$, we consider the problem of finding bases $X_1$ of $M_1$ and $X_2$ of $M_2$ minimizing $w_1(X_1)+w_2(X_2)$ subject to a certain cardinality constraint on their intersection $X_1 \cap X_2$. For this problem, Lendl, Peis, and Timmermans (2019) discussed modular cost functions: they reduced the problem to weighted matroid intersection for the case where the cardinality constraint is $|X_1 \cap X_2|\le k$ or $|X_1 \cap X_2|\ge k$; and designed a new primal-dual algorithm for the case where the constraint is $|X_1 \cap X_2|=k$. The aim of this paper is to generalize the problems to have nonlinear convex cost functions, and to comprehend them from the viewpoint of discrete convex analysis. We prove that each generalized problem can be solved via valuated independent assignment, valuated matroid intersection, or $\mathrm{M}$-convex submodular flow, to offer a comprehensive understanding of weighted matroid intersection with intersection constraints. We also show the NP-hardness of some variants of these problems, which clarifies the coverage of discrete convex analysis for those problems. Finally, we present applications of our generalized problems in the recoverable robust matroid basis problem, combinatorial optimization problems with interaction costs, and matroid congestion games.
Moduli spaces of codimension-one subspaces in a linear variety and their tropicalization
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 29(2) P2.31 (2022), 33 pages • View PublicationBIB
We study the moduli space of $d$-dimensional linear subspaces contained in a fixed $(d+1)$-dimensional linear variety $X$, and its tropicalization. We prove that these moduli spaces are linear subspaces themselves, and thus their tropicalization is completely determined by their associated (valuated) matroids. We show that these matroids can be interpreted as the matroid of lines of the hyperplane arrangement corresponding to $X$, and generically are equal to a Dilworth truncation of the free matroid. In this way, we can describe combinatorially tropicalized Fano schemes and tropicalizations of moduli spaces of stable maps of degree $1$ to a plane.

Perfect matroids over hyperfields

We investigate valuated matroids with an additional algebraic structure on their residue matroids. We encode the structure in terms of representability over stringent hyperfields. A hyperfield $H$ is {\em stringent} if $a\boxplus b$ is a singleton unless $a=-b$, for all $a,b\in H$. By a construction of Marc Krasner, each valued field gives rise to a stringent hyperfield. We show that if $H$ is a stringent skew hyperfield, then the vectors of any weak matroid over $H$ are orthogonal to its covectors, and we deduce that weak matroids over $H$ are strong matroids over $H$. Also, we present vector axioms for matroids over stringent skew hyperfields which generalize the vector axioms for oriented matroids and valuated matroids.

Presentations of Transversal Valuated Matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given $d$ row vectors of $n$ tropical numbers, $d<n$, the tropical Stiefel map constructs a version of their row space, whose Plücker coordinates are tropical determinants. We explicitly describe the fibers of this map. From the viewpoint of matroid theory, the tropical Stiefel map defines a generalization of transversal matroids in the valuated context, and our results are the valuated generalizations of theorems of Brualdi and Dinolt, Mason and others on the set of all set families that present a given transversal matroid. We show that a connected valuated matroid is transversal if and only if all of its connected initial matroids are. The duals of our results describe complete stable intersections via valuated strict gammoids.

Matroids over one-dimensional groups
Published in Int. Math. Res. Not., 2022:3, 2298-2336 • View PublicationBIB
We develop the theory of matroids over one-dimensional algebraic groups, with special emphasis on positive characteristic. In particular, we compute the Lindström valuations and Frobenius flocks of such matroids. Building on work by Evans and Hrushovski, we show that the class of algebraic matroids, paired with their Lindström valuations, is not closed under duality of valuated matroids.

Uniform semimodular lattices and valuated matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we present a lattice-theoretic characterization for valuated matroids, which is an extension of the well-known cryptomorphic equivalence between matroids and geometric lattices ($=$ atomistic semimodular lattices). We introduce a class of semimodular lattices, called uniform semimodular lattices, and establish a cryptomorphic equivalence between integer-valued valuated matroids and uniform semimodular lattices. Our result includes a coordinate-free lattice-theoretic characterization of integer points in tropical linear spaces, incorporates the Dress-Terhalle completion process of valuated matroids, and establishes a smooth connection with Euclidean buildings of type A.

Matroids over partial hyperstructures
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present an algebraic framework which simultaneously generalizes the notion of linear subspaces, matroids, valuated matroids, oriented matroids, and regular matroids. To do this, we first introduce algebraic objects called tracts which generalize both hyperfields in the sense of Krasner and partial fields in the sense of Semple and Whittle. We then define matroids over tracts; in fact, there are (at least) two natural notions of matroid in this general context, which we call weak and strong matroids. We give "cryptomorphic" axiom systems for such matroids in terms of circuits, Grassmann-Plücker functions, and dual pairs, and establish some basic duality results. We then explore sufficient criteria for the notions of weak and strong matroids to coincide. For example, if $F$ is a particularly nice kind of tract called a doubly distributive partial hyperfield, we show that the notions of weak and strong $F$-matroids coincide. We also give examples of tracts $F$ and weak $F$-matroids which are not strong. Our theory of matroids over tracts is closely related to, but more general than, "matroids over fuzzy rings" in the sense of Dress and Dress-Wenzel.

Polyhedra and parameter spaces for matroids over valuation rings
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we address two of the major foundational questions in the theory of matroids over rings. First, we provide a cryptomorphic axiomatisation, by introducing an analogue of the base polytope for matroids. Second, we describe a parameter space for matroids over a valuation ring, which turns out to be a tropical version of the Bott-Samelson varieties for the full flag variety. Thus a matroid over a valuation ring is a sequence of flags of tropical linear spaces a.k.a. valuated matroids.

A Stronger Multiple Exchange Property for M$^{\natural}$-concave Functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
The multiple exchange property for matroid bases has recently been generalized for valuated matroids and M$^{\natural}$-concave set functions. This paper establishes a stronger form of this multiple exchange property that imposes a cardinality condition on the exchangeable subset. The stronger form immediately implies the defining exchange property of M$^{\natural}$-concave set functions, which was not the case with the recently established multiple exchange property without the cardinality condition.

Relationship of Two Formulations for Shortest Bibranchings
Published • View PublicationBIB
The shortest bibranching problem is a common generalization of the minimum-weight edge cover problem in bipartite graphs and the minimum-weight arborescence problem in directed graphs. For the shortest bibranching problem, an efficient primal-dual algorithm is given by Keijsper and Pendavingh (1998), and the tractability of the problem is ascribed to total dual integrality in a linear programming formulation by Schrijver (1982). Another view on the tractability of this problem is afforded by a valuated matroid intersection formulation by Takazawa (2012). In the present paper, we discuss the relationship between these two formulations for the shortest bibranching problem. We first demonstrate that the valuated matroid intersection formulation can be derived from the linear programming formulation through the Benders decomposition, where integrality is preserved in the decomposition process and the resulting convex programming is endowed with discrete convexity. We then show how a pair of primal and dual optimal solutions of one formulation is constructed from that of the other formulation, thereby providing a connection between polyhedral combinatorics and discrete convex analysis.

Construction of the Lindström valuation of an algebraic extension
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 157 (2018) 389-401 • View PublicationBIB
Recently, Bollen, Draisma, and Pendavingh have introduced the Lindström valuation on the algebraic matroid of a field extension of characteristic p. Their construction passes through what they call a matroid flock and builds on some of the associated theory of matroid flocks which they develop. In this paper, we give a direct construction of the Lindström valuated matroid using the theory of inseparable field extensions. In particular, we give a description of the valuation, the valuated circuits, and the valuated cocircuits.

Multiple Exchange Property for M$^\natural$-concave Functions and Valuated Matroids

The multiple exchange property for matroid bases is generalized for valuated matroids and M$^\natural$-concave set functions. The proof is based on the Fenchel-type duality theorem in discrete convex analysis. The present result has an implication in economics: The strong no complementarities (SNC) condition of Gul and Stacchetti is in fact equivalent to the gross substitutes (GS) condition of Kelso and Crawford.

A Grassmann algebra for matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce an idempotent analogue of the exterior algebra for which the theory of tropical linear spaces (and valuated matroids) can be seen in close analogy with the classical Grassmann algebra formalism for linear spaces. The top wedge power of a tropical linear space is its Plucker vector, which we view as a tensor, and a tropical linear space is recovered from its Plucker vector as the kernel of the corresponding wedge multiplication map. We prove that an arbitrary d-tensor satisfies the tropical Plucker relations (valuated exchange axiom) if and only if the d-th wedge power of the kernel of wedge-multiplication is free of rank one. This provides a new cryptomorphism for valuated matroids, including ordinary matroids as a special case.

Tropical schemes, tropical cycles, and valuated matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that the weights on a tropical variety can be recovered from the tropical scheme structure proposed by the Giansiracusas in arXiv:1308.0042, so there is a well-defined Hilbert-Chow morphism from a tropical scheme to the underlying tropical cycle. For a subscheme of projective space given by a homogeneous ideal I we show that this tropical scheme structure contains the same information as the set of valuated matroids of the vector spaces I_d for d \geq 0. We also give a combinatorial criterion to determine whether a given relation is in the congruence defining the tropical scheme structure.

A Combinatorial Formula for Principal Minors of a Matrix with Tree-metric Exponents and Its Applications

Let $T$ be a tree with a vertex set $\{ 1,2,\dots, N \}$. Denote by $d_{ij}$ the distance between vertices $i$ and $j$. In this paper, we present an explicit combinatorial formula of principal minors of the matrix $(t^{d_{ij}})$, and its applications to tropical geometry, study of multivariate stable polynomials, and representation of valuated matroids. We also give an analogous formula for a skew-symmetric matrix associated with $T$.

Matroids over a ring
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce the notion of a matroid M over a commutative ring R, assigning to every subset of the ground set an R-module according to some axioms. When R is a field, we recover matroids. When R=$\mathbb{Z}$, and when R is a DVR, we get (structures which contain all the data of) quasi-arithmetic matroids, and valuated matroids i.e. tropical linear spaces, respectively. More generally, whenever R is a Dedekind domain, we extend all the usual properties and operations holding for matroids (e.g., duality), and we explicitly describe the structure of the matroids over R. Furthermore, we compute the Tutte-Grothendieck ring of matroids over R. We also show that the Tutte quasi-polynomial of a matroid over $\mathbb{Z}$ can be obtained as an evaluation of the class of the matroid in the Tutte-Grothendieck ring.
