Expanders on matrices over a finite chain ring, I
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this work and its sequel, we study the expanding phenomenon of matrices over a finite chain ring of large residue field. A sum-product estimate is proved. It is showed that $x+yz$ is a moderate expander on $n\times n$ matrices with exponent $\frac{n+1}{6}$. These results generalise the main theorems in a recent work of Xie and Ge. The proofs use spectral graph theory and elementary divisor theory.

Stochastic Couplings and Bijections from the Symmetric Group to Itself
Inspired by the Stochastic processes described by the Feller Coupling and Chinese Restaurant Processes, we create four different bijections from words in the set $[1]\times [2] \times\cdot \times[n]$ to $S_n$. We then compose these maps with their inverse to obtain a toal of six bijections $S_n \to S_n$. Following that, we investigate the fixed points ($1$-cycle) and higher $k$-cycles of these maps. We characterized some of their properties completely as well as empirically showing the complexity of the higher $k$-cycle structures for these maps.

Highly symmetric lines
Published • View Publication • BIB
A generalization of highly symmetric frames is presented by considering also projective stabilizers of frame vectors. This allows construction of highly symmetric line systems and study of highly symmetric frames in a more unified manner. Construction of highly symmetric line systems involves computation of twisted spherical functions associated with finite groups. Further generalizations include definition of highly symmetric systems of subspaces. We give several examples which illustrate our approach including 3 new kissing configurations which improve lower bounds on the kissing number in $d=10,11,14$ to 510, 592 and 1932 respectively.

Building Correlation Immune Functions from Sets of Mutually Orthogonal Cellular Automata
Published • View Publication • BIB
Correlation immune Boolean functions play an important role in the implementation of efficient masking countermeasures for side-channel attacks in cryptography. In this paper, we investigate a method to construct correlation immune functions through families of mutually orthogonal cellular automata (MOCA). First, we show that the orthogonal array (OA) associated to a family of MOCA can be expanded to a binary OA of strength at least 2. To prove this result, we exploit the characterization of MOCA in terms of orthogonal labelings on de Bruijn graphs. Then, we use the resulting binary OA to define the support of a second-order correlation immune function. Next, we perform some computational experiments to construct all such functions up to $n=12$ variables, and observe that their correlation immunity order is actually greater, always at least 3. We conclude by discussing how these results open up interesting perspectives for future research, with respect to the search of new correlation-immune functions and binary orthogonal arrays.

On the size of finite Sidon sets
Published in Ukrains'kyi Matematychnyi Zhurnal, 76(8), Sept 2024, pp 1192-06 • View Publication • BIB
A Sidon set is a set of integers containing no nontrivial solutions to the equation $a+b=c+d$. We improve on the lower bound on the diameter of a Sidon set with $k$ elements: if $k$ is sufficiently large and ${\cal A}$ is a Sidon set with $k$ elements, then $diam({\cal A})\ge k^2-1.99405 k^{3/2}$. Alternatively, if $n$ is sufficiently large, then the largest subset of $\{1,2,\dots,n\}$ that is a Sidon set has cardinality at most $n^{1/2}+0.99703 n^{1/4}$. While these are only slight numerical improvements on Balogh-Füredi-Roy (arXiv:2103:15850v2), we use a method that is logically simpler.

Functoriality of Bose-Mesner algebras and profinite association schemes
We show that taking the set of primitive idempotents of commutative association schemes is a functor from the category of commutative association schemes with surjective morphisms to the category of finite sets with surjective partial functions. We then consider projective systems of commutative association schemes consisting of surjections (which we call profinite association schemes), for which Bose-Mesner algebra is defined, and describe a Delsarte theory on such schemes. This is another method for generalizing association schemes to those on infinite sets, related with the approach by Barg and Skriganov. Relation with $(t,m,s)$-nets and $(t,s)$-sequences is studied. We reprove some of the results of Martin-Stinson from this viewpoint.

Limits of Dense Simplicial Complexes
We develop a theory of limits for sequences of dense abstract simplicial complexes, where a sequence is considered convergent if its homomorphism densities converge. The limiting objects are represented by stacks of measurable [0,1]-valued functions on unit cubes of increasing dimension, each corresponding to a dimension of the abstract simplicial complex. We show that convergence in homomorphism density implies convergence in a cut-metric, and vice versa, as well as showing that simplicial complexes sampled from the limit objects closely resemble its structure. Applying this framework, we also partially characterize the convergence of nonuniform hypergraphs.
A family of counterexamples for a conjecture of Berge on $α$-diperfect digraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $D$ be a digraph. A stable set $S$ of $D$ and a path partition $\mathcal{P}$ of $D$ are orthogonal if every path $P \in \mathcal{P}$ contains exactly one vertex of $S$. In 1982, Berge defined the class of $α$-diperfect digraphs. A digraph $D$ is $α$-diperfect if for every maximum stable set $S$ of $D$ there is a path partition $\mathcal{P}$ of $D$ orthogonal to $S$ and this property holds for every induced subdigraph of $D$. An anti-directed odd cycle is an orientation of an odd cycle $(x_0,\ldots,x_{2k},x_0)$ with $k\geq2$ in which each vertex $x_0,x_1,x_2,x_3,x_5,x_7\ldots,x_{2k-1}$ is either a source or a sink. Berge conjectured that a digraph $D$ is $α$-diperfect if and only if $D$ does not contain an anti-directed odd cycle as an induced subdigraph. In this paper, we show that this conjecture is false by exhibiting an infinite family of orientations of complements of odd cycles with at least seven vertices that are not $α$-diperfect.

Properties of Ehrhart Polynomials whose Roots Lie on the Critical Line
We study a class of polynomials that has all of its roots on the critical line and shares many properties with Ehrhart polynomials. Braun showed that the roots of Ehrhart polynomials are bounded quadratically and Higashitani provided examples for polytopes whose Ehrhart polynomial roots come close to this bound. In the case of polytopes which have their roots on the critical line, we present an improved bound. As a side effect this confirms a special case of a conjecture of Braun.

High-rank subtensors of high-rank tensors
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $d \ge 2$ be a positive integer. We show that for a class of notions $R$ of rank for order-$d$ tensors, which includes in particular the tensor rank, the slice rank and the partition rank, there exist functions $F_{d,R}$ and $G_{d,R}$ such that if an order-$d$ tensor has $R$-rank at least $G_{d,R}(l)$ then we can restrict its entries to a product of sets $X_1 \times \dots \times X_d$ such that the restriction has $R$-rank at least $l$ and the sets $X_1, \dots, X_d$ each have size at most $F_{d,R}(l)$. Furthermore, our proof methods allow us to show that under a very natural condition we can require the sets $X_1, \dots, X_d$ to be pairwise disjoint.

MWS and FWS Codes for Coordinate-Wise Weight Functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
A combinatorial problem concerning the maximum size of the (hamming) weight set of an $[n,k]_q$ linear code was recently introduced. Codes attaining the established upper bound are the Maximum Weight Spectrum (MWS) codes. Those $[n,k]_q $ codes with the same weight set as $ \mathbb{F}_q^n $ are called Full Weight Spectrum (FWS) codes. FWS codes are necessarily ``short", whereas MWS codes are necessarily ``long". For fixed $ k,q $ the values of $ n $ for which an $ [n,k]_q $-FWS code exists are completely determined, but the determination of the minimum length $ M(H,k,q) $ of an $ [n,k]_q $-MWS code remains an open problem. The current work broadens discussion first to general coordinate-wise weight functions, and then specifically to the Lee weight and a Manhattan like weight. In the general case we provide bounds on $ n $ for which an FWS code exists, and bounds on $ n $ for which an MWS code exists. When specializing to the Lee or to the Manhattan setting we are able to completely determine the parameters of FWS codes. As with the Hamming case, we are able to provide an upper bound on $ M(\mathcal{L},k,q) $ (the minimum length of Lee MWS codes), and pose the determination of $ M(\mathcal{L},k,q) $ as an open problem. On the other hand, with respect to the Manhattan weight we completely determine the parameters of MWS codes.

Fast construction on a restricted budget
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce a model of a controlled random graph process. In this model, the edges of the complete graph $K_n$ are ordered randomly and then revealed, one by one, to a player called Builder. He must decide, immediately and irrevocably, whether to purchase each observed edge. The observation time is bounded by parameter $t$, and the total budget of purchased edges is bounded by parameter $b$. Builder's goal is to devise a strategy that, with high probability, allows him to construct a graph of purchased edges possessing a target graph property $\mathcal{P}$, all within the limitations of observation time and total budget. We show the following: (a) Builder has a strategy to achieve $k$-vertex-connectivity at the hitting time for this property by purchasing at most $c_kn$ edges for an explicit $c_k<k$; and a strategy to achieve minimum degree $k$ (slightly) after the threshold for minimum degree $k$ by purchasing at most $(1+\varepsilon)kn/2$ edges (which is optimal). (b) Builder has a strategy to create a Hamilton cycle at the hitting time for Hamiltonicity by purchasing at most $Cn$ edges for an absolute constant $C>1$; this is optimal in the sense that $C$ cannot be arbitrarily close to $1$. This substantially extends the classical hitting time result for Hamiltonicity due to Ajtai--Komlós--Szemerédi and Bollobás. (c) Builder has a strategy to create a perfect matching by time $(1+\varepsilon)n\log{n}/2$ while purchasing at most $(1+\varepsilon)n/2$ edges (which is optimal). (d) Builder has a strategy to create a copy of a given $k$-vertex tree if $t\ge b\gg\max\{(n/t)^{k-2},1\}$, and this is optimal; (e) For $\ell=2k+1$ or $\ell=2k+2$, Builder has a strategy to create a copy of a cycle of length $\ell$ if $b\gg\max \{n^{k+2}/t^{k+1},n/\sqrt{t}\}$, and this is optimal.
Complementary Vanishing Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a graph $G$ with vertices $\{v_1,\ldots,v_n\}$, we define $\mathcal{S}(G)$ to be the set of symmetric matrices $A=[a_{i,j}]$ such that for $i\ne j$ we have $a_{i,j}\ne 0$ if and only if $v_iv_j\in E(G)$. Motivated by the Graph Complement Conjecture, we say that a graph $G$ is complementary vanishing if there exist matrices $A \in \mathcal{S}(G)$ and $B \in \mathcal{S}(\overline{G})$ such that $AB=O$. We provide combinatorial conditions for when a graph is or is not complementary vanishing, and we characterize which graphs are complementary vanishing in terms of certain minimal complementary vanishing graphs. In addition to this, we determine which graphs on at most $8$ vertices are complementary vanishing.

Alternatives for the $q$-matroid axioms of independent spaces, bases, and spanning spaces
Published in Advances in Applied Mathematics, Volume 153, February 2024, 102632 • View Publication • BIB
It is well known that in q-matroids, axioms for independent spaces, bases, and spanning spaces differ from the classical case of matroids, since the straightforward q-analogue of the classical axioms does not give a q-matroid. For this reason, a fourth axiom has been proposed. In this paper we show how we can describe these spaces with only three axioms, providing two alternative ways to do that. As an application, we show direct cryptomorphisms between independent spaces and circuits and between independent spaces and bases.

Generalization of edge general position problem
Published • View Publication • BIB
The edge geodesic cover problem of a graph $G$ is to find a smallest number of geodesics that cover the edge set of $G$. The edge $k$-general position problem is introduced as the problem to find a largest set $S$ of edges of $G$ such that no $k-1$ edges of $S$ lie on a common geodesic. We study this dual min-max problems and connect them to an edge geodesic partition problem. Using these connections, exact values of the edge $k$-general position number is determined for different values of $k$ and for different networks including torus networks, hypercubes, and Benes networks.

Exact antichain saturation numbers via a generalisation of a result of Lehman-Ron
Published • View Publication • BIB
For given positive integers $k$ and $n$, a family $\mathcal{F}$ of subsets of $\{1,\dots,n\}$ is $k$-antichain saturated if it does not contain an antichain of size $k$, but adding any set to $\mathcal{F}$ creates an antichain of size $k$. We use sat$^*(n, k)$ to denote the smallest size of such a family. For all $k$ and sufficiently large $n$, we determine the exact value of sat$^*(n, k)$. Our result implies that sat$^*(n, k)=n(k-1)-Θ(k\log k)$, which confirms several conjectures on antichain saturation. Previously, exact values for sat$^*(n,k)$ were only known for $k$ up to $6$. We also prove a generalisation of a result of Lehman-Ron which may be of independent interest. We show that given $m$ disjoint chains in the Boolean lattice, we can create $m$ disjoint skipless chains that cover the same elements (where we call a chain skipless if any two consecutive elements differ in size by exactly one).

Enumeration of Odd Dimensional Partitions modulo 4
The number of standard Young tableaux of shape a partition $λ$ is called the dimension of the partition and is denoted by $f^λ$. Partitions with odd dimensions were enumerated by McKay and were further characterized by Macdonald. Let $a_i(n)$ be the number of partitions of $n$ with dimension congruent to $i$ modulo 4. In this paper, we refine Macdonald's and McKay's results by computing $a_1(n)$ and $a_3(n)$ when $n$ has no consecutive 1s in its binary expansion or when the sum of binary digits of $n$ is 2.

Local rainbow colorings for various graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Motivated by a problem in theoretical computer science suggested by Wigderson, Alon and Ben-Eliezer studied the following extremal problem systematically one decade ago. Given a graph $H$, let $C(n,H)$ be the minimum number $k$ such that the following holds. There are $n$ colorings of $E(K_{n})$ with $k$ colors, each associated with one of the vertices of $K_{n}$, such that for every copy $T$ of $H$ in $K_{n}$, at least one of the colorings that are associated with $V(T)$ assigns distinct colors to all the edges of $E(T)$. In this paper, we obtain several new results in this problem including: \begin{itemize} \item For paths of short length, we show that $C(n,P_{4})=Ω(n^{1/5})$ and $C(n,P_{t})=Ω(n^{1/3})$ with $t\in\{5,6\}$, which significantly improve the previously known lower bounds $(\log{n})^{Ω(1)}$. \item We make progress on the problem of Alon and Ben-Eliezer about complete graphs, more precisely, we show that $C(n,K_{r})=Ω(n^{2/3})$ when $r\geqslant 8$. This provides the first instance of graph for which the lower bound goes beyond the natural barrier $Ω(n^{1/2})$. Moreover, we prove that $C(n,K_{s,t})=Ω(n^{2/3})$ for $t\geqslant s\geqslant 7$. \item When $H$ is a star with at least $4$ leaves, a matching of size at least $4$, or a path of length at least $7$, we give the new lower bound for $C(n,H)$. We also show that for any graph $H$ with at least $6$ edges, $C(n,H)$ is polynomial in $n$. All of these improve the corresponding results obtained by Alon and Ben-Eliezer.

The Edge-Connectivity of Vertex-Transitive Hypergraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A graph or hypergraph is said to be vertex-transitive if its automorphism group acts transitively upon its vertices. A classic theorem of Mader asserts that every connected vertex-transitive graph is maximally edge-connected. We generalise this result to hypergraphs and show that every connected linear uniform vertex-transitive hypergraph is maximally edge-connected. We also show that if we relax either the linear or uniform conditions in this generalisation, then we can construct examples of vertex-transitive hypergraphs which are not maximally edge-connected.

Non-Abelian correlation inequalities and stable determinantal polynomials
We consider the correlations of invariant observables for the $O(N)$ and $\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^{N-1}$ models at zero coupling, namely, with respect to the natural group-invariant measure. In the limit where one takes a large power of the integrand, we show that these correlations become inverse powers of the Kirchhoff polynomial. The latter therefore provide a simplified toy model for the investigation of inequalities between products of correlations. Properties such as ferromagnetic behavior for spin model correlations correspond, in this asymptotic limit, to log-ultramodularity which is a consequence of the Rayleigh property of the Kirchhoff polynomial. In addition to the above rigorous asymptotics, the main result of this article is a general theorem which shows that inverse half-integer powers of certain determinantal stable polynomials, such as the Kirchhoff polynomials, satisfy generalizations of the GKS 2 inequalities and the Ginibre inequalities. We conclude with some open problems, e.g., the question of whether the last statement holds for powers which are not half-integers. This leads to a Hirota-bilinear analogue of the complete monotonicity property recently investigated by Scott and Sokal.
