On strongly walk regular graphs, triple sum sets and their codes
Published in Designs, Codes and Cryptography 91[2] (2023) • View Publication • BIB
Strongly walk regular graphs (SWRGs or $s$-SWRGs) form a natural generalization of strongly regular graphs (SRGs) where paths of length~2 are replaced by paths of length~$s$. They can be constructed as coset graphs of the duals of projective three-weight codes whose weights satisfy a certain equation. We provide classifications of the feasible parameters of these codes in the binary and ternary case for medium size code lengths. For the binary case, the divisibility of the weights of these codes is investigated and several general results are shown. It is known that an $s$-SWRG has at most 4 distinct eigenvalues $k > θ_1 > θ_2 > θ_3$, and that the triple $(θ_1, θ_2, θ_3)$ satisfies a certain homogeneous polynomial equation of degree $s - 2$ (Van Dam, Omidi, 2013). This equation defines a plane algebraic curve; we use methods from algorithmic arithmetic geometry to show that for $s = 5$ and $s = 7$, there are only the obvious solutions, and we conjecture this to remain true for all (odd) $s \ge 9$.

On additive MDS codes over small fields
Let $C$ be a $(n,q^{2k},n-k+1)_{q^2}$ additive MDS code which is linear over ${\mathbb F}_q$. We prove that if $n \geqslant q+k$ and $k+1$ of the projections of $C$ are linear over ${\mathbb F}_{q^2}$ then $C$ is linear over ${\mathbb F}_{q^2}$. We use this geometrical theorem, other geometric arguments and some computations to classify all additive MDS codes over ${\mathbb F}_q$ for $q \in \{4,8,9\}$. We also classify the longest additive MDS codes over ${\mathbb F}_{16}$ which are linear over ${\mathbb F}_4$. In these cases, the classifications not only verify the MDS conjecture for additive codes, but also confirm there are no additive non-linear MDS codes which perform as well as their linear counterparts. These results imply that the quantum MDS conjecture holds for $q \in \{ 2,3\}$.
On the Bond Polytope
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a graph $G=(V,E)$, the maximum bond problem searches for a maximum cut $δ(S) \subseteq E$ with $S \subseteq V$ such that $G[S]$ and $G[V\setminus S]$ are connected. This problem is closely related to the well-known maximum cut problem and known under a variety of names such as largest bond, maximum minimal cut and maximum connected (sides) cut. The bond polytope is the convex hull of all incidence vectors of bonds. Similar to the connection of the corresponding optimization problems, the bond polytope is closely related to the cut polytope. While cut polytopes have been intensively studied, there are no results on bond polytopes. We start a structural study of the latter. We investigate the relation between cut- and bond polytopes and study the effect of graph modifications on bond polytopes and their facets. Moreover, we study facet-defining inequalities arising from edges and cycles for bond polytopes. In particular, these yield a complete linear description of bond polytopes of cycles and $3$-connected planar $(K_5-e)$-minor free graphs. Moreover we present a reduction of the maximum bond problem on arbitrary graphs to the maximum bond problem on $3$-connected graphs. This yields a linear time algorithm for maximum bond on $(K_5-e)$-minor free graphs.

Turán Density of $2$-edge-colored Bipartite Graphs with Application on $\{2, 3\}$-Hypergraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider the Turán problems of $2$-edge-colored graphs. A $2$-edge-colored graph $H=(V, E_r, E_b)$ is a triple consisting of the vertex set $V$, the set of red edges $E_r$ and the set of blue edges $E_b$ with $E_r$ and $E_b$ do not have to be disjoint. The Turán density $π(H)$ of $H$ is defined to be $\lim_{n\to\infty} \max_{G_n}h_n(G_n)$, where $G_n$ is chosen among all possible $2$-edge-colored graphs on $n$ vertices containing no $H$ as a sub-graph and $h_n(G_n)=(|E_r(G)|+|E_b(G)|)/{n\choose 2}$ is the formula to measure the edge density of $G_n$. We will determine the Turán densities of all $2$-edge-colored bipartite graphs. We also give an important application of our study on the Turán problems of $\{2, 3\}$-hypergraphs.

Degrees in random uniform minimal factorizations
Published • View Publication • BIB
We are interested in random uniform minimal factorizations of the $n$-cycle which are factorizations of $(1~2\dots n)$ into a product of $n-1$ transpositions. Our main result is an explicit formula for the joint probability that 1 and 2 appear a given number of times in a uniform minimal factorization. For this purpose, we combine bijections with Cayley trees together with explicit computations of multivariate generating functions.

Component factors in $K_{1,r}$-free graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A graph is said to be $K_{1,r}$-free if it does not contain an induced subgraph isomorphic to $K_{1,r}$. An $\mathcal{F}$-factor is a spanning subgraph $H$ such that each connected component of $H$ is isomorphic to some graph in $\mathcal{F}$. In particular, $H$ is called an $\{P_2,P_3\}$-factor of $G$ if $\mathcal{F}=\{P_2,P_3\}$; $H$ is called an $\mathcal{S}_n$-factor of $G$ if $\mathcal{F}=\{K_{1,1},K_{1,2},K_{1,3},...,K_{1,n}\}$, where $n\geq2$. A spanning subgraph of a graph $G$ is called a $\mathcal{P}_{\geq k}$-factor of $G$ if its each component is isomorphic to a path of order at least $k$, where $k\geq2$. A graph $G$ is called a $\mathcal{F}$-factor covered graph if there is a $\mathcal{F}$-factor of $G$ including $e$ for any $e\in E(G)$. In this paper, we give a minimum degree condition for a $K_{1,r}$-free graph to have an $\mathcal{S}_n$-factor and a $\mathcal{P}_{\geq 3}$-factor, respectively. Further, we obtain sufficient conditions for $K_{1,r}$-free graphs to be $\mathcal{P}_{\geq 2}$-factor, $\mathcal{P}_{\geq 3}$-factor or $\{P_2,P_3\}$-factor covered graphs. In addition, examples show that our results are sharp.

Enumeration of paths in Young--Fibonacci graph
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Young--Fibonacci graph is the Hasse diagram of one of the two (along with the Young lattice) 1-differential graded modular lattices. This explains the interest to path enumeration problems in this graph. We obtain a formula for the number of paths between two vertices of the Young--Fibonacci graph which is polynomial with respect to the minimum of their ranks.

New identities for Theta operators
In this article, we prove a new general identity involving the Theta operators introduced by the first author and his collaborators in [D'Adderio, Iraci, Vanden Wyngaerd 2020]. From this result, we can easily deduce several new identities that have combinatorial consequences in the study of Macdonald polynomials and diagonal coinvariants. In particular, we provide a unifying framework from which we recover many identities scattered in the literature, often resulting in drastically shorter proofs.
Block number, descents and Schur positivity of fully commutative elements in $B_n$
Published • View Publication • BIB
The distribution of Coxeter descents and block number over the set of fully commutative elements in the hyperoctahedral group $B_n$, $\FC(B_n)$, is studied in this paper. We prove that the associated Chow quasi-symmetric generating function is equal to a non-negative sum of products of two Schur functions. The proof involves a decomposition of $\FC(B_n)$ into a disjoint union of two-sided Barbash-Vogan combinatorial cells, a type $B$ extension of Rubey's descent preserving involution on $321$-avoiding permutations and a detailed study of the intersection of $\FC(B_n)$ with $S_n$-cosets which yields a new decomposition of $\FC(B_n)$ into disjoint subsets called fibers. We also compare two different type $B$ Schur-positivity notions, arising from works of Chow and Poirier

We study site and bond percolation on directed simple random graphs with a given degree distribution and derive the expressions for the critical value of the percolation probability above which the giant strongly connected component emerges and the fraction of vertices in this component.

Universal edge scaling in random partitions
Published in Lett. Math. Phys. 111 (2021) 48 • View Publication • BIB
We establish the universal edge scaling limit of random partitions with the infinite-parameter distribution called the Schur measure. We explore the asymptotic behavior of the wave function, which is a building block of the corresponding kernel, based on the Schr{ö}dinger-type differential equation. We show that the wave function is in general asymptotic to the Airy function and its higher-order analogs in the edge scaling limit. We construct the corresponding higher-order Airy kernel and the Tracy-Widom distribution from the wave function in the scalins limit, and discuss its implication to the multicritical phase transition in the large size matrix model. We also discuss the limit shape of random partitions through the semi-classical analysis of the wave function.

On some geometric aspects of the class of hv-convex switching components
Published • View Publication • BIB
In the usual aim of discrete tomography, the reconstruction of an unknown discrete set is considered, by means of projection data collected along a set $U$ of discrete directions. Possible ambiguous reconstructions can arise if and only if switching components occur, namely, if and only if non-empty images exist having null projections along all the directions in $U$. In order to lower the number of allowed reconstructions, one tries to incorporate possible extra geometric constraints in the tomographic problem. In particular, the class $\mathbb{P}$ of horizontally and vertically convex connected sets (briefly, $hv$-convex polyominoes) has been largely considered. In this paper we introduce the class of $hv$-convex switching components, and prove some preliminary results on their geometric structure. The class includes all switching components arising when the tomographic problem is considered in $\mathbb{P}$, which highly motivates the investigation of such configurations. It turns out that the considered class can be partitioned in two disjointed subclasses of closed patterns, called windows and curls, respectively. It follows that all windows have a unique representation, while curls consist of interlaced sequences of sub-patterns, called $Z$-paths, which leads to the problem of understanding the combinatorial structure of such sequences. We provide explicit constructions of families of curls associated to some special sequences, and also give additional details on further allowed or forbidden configurations by means of a number of illustrative examples.

Ramsey properties of products of chains
Let $\mathbf{k}$ denote the totally ordered set (or chain) on $k$ elements. The product $\mathbf{k}^t=\mathbf{k}\times\cdots\times\mathbf{k}$ is a poset called a grid. This paper discusses several loosely related results on the Ramsey theory of grids. Most of the results involve some application of the Product Ramsey Theorem.

Planarity and non-separating cycles in uniform high genus quadrangulations
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study large uniform random quadrangulations whose genus grow linearly with the number of faces, whose local convergence was recently established by Budzinski and the author arXiv:1902.00492,arXiv:2012.05813. Here we study several properties of these objects which are not captured by the local topology. Namely we show that balls around the root are planar whp up to logarithmic radius, and we prove that there exists short non-contractible cycles with positive probability.
Infinitesimal semi-invariant pictures and co-amalgamation
Published in Journal of the London Mathematical Society 109 (2023), no. 1 • View Publication • BIB
The purpose of this paper is to study the local structure of the semi-invariant picture of a tame hereditary algebra near the null root. Using a construction that we call co-amalgamation, we show that this local structure is completely described by the semi-invariant pictures of a collection of self-injective Nakayama algebras. We then describe the cones of this local structure using cluster-like structures that we call support regular clusters. Finally, we show that the local structure is (piecewise linearly) invariant under cluster tilting.

Homotopy Covers of Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We develop a theory of $\times$-homotopy, fundamental groupoids and covering spaces that apply to non-simple graphs, generalizing existing results for simple graphs. We prove that $\times$-homotopies from finite graphs can be decomposed into moves which adjust at most one vertex at a time, generalizing the spider lemma of \cite{CS1}. We define a notion of homotopy covering map and develop a theory of universal covers and deck transformations, generalizing \cites{TardifWroncha, Matsushita} to non-simple graphs. We examine the case of reflexive graphs, where each vertex has at least one loop. We also prove that these homotopy covering maps satisfy a homotopy lifting property for arbitrary graph homomorphisms, generalizing path lifting results of \cites{Matsushita, TardifWroncha}.

Kohnert's rule for flagged Schur modules
Published • View Publication • BIB
Flagged Schur modules generalize the irreducible representations of the general linear group under the action of the Borel subalgebra. Their characters include many important generalizations of Schur polynomials, such as Demazure characters, flagged skew Schur polynomials, and Schubert polynomials. In this paper, we prove the characters of flagged Schur modules can be computed using a simple combinatorial algorithm due to Kohnert if and only if the indexing diagram is northwest. This gives a new proof that characters of flagged Schur modules are nonnegative sums of Demazure characters and gives a representation theoretic interpretation for Kohnert polynomials.

Subset Sum Instances in ZFC Limbo
Our main result, Theorem 2.5, shows the existence of a vast infinity of subset sum problems solvable in polynomial time. The only proof we have of this result uses the ZFC independent Jump Free Theorem of Harvey Friedman, thus putting Theorem 2.5 in what we call ZFC limbo. The mathematics we use is elementary and at the level of a good undergraduate course in combinatorics or design and analysis of algorithms. The statement of the Jump Free Theorem is also easily understood at this level (but not the proof).

Clustered colouring of graph classes with bounded treedepth or pathwidth
Published • View Publication • BIB
The "clustered chromatic number" of a class of graphs is the minimum integer $k$ such that for some integer $c$ every graph in the class is $k$-colourable with monochromatic components of size at most $c$. We determine the clustered chromatic number of any minor-closed class with bounded treedepth, and prove a best possible upper bound on the clustered chromatic number of any minor-closed class with bounded pathwidth. As a consequence, we determine the fractional clustered chromatic number of every minor-closed class.
