On linear sets of minimum size
Published • View Publication • BIB
An $\mathbb{F}_q$-linear set of rank $k$ on a projective line $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^h)$, containing at least one point of weight one, has size at least $q^{k-1}+1$ (see [J. De Beule and G. Van De Voorde, The minimum size of a linear set, J. Comb. Theory, Ser: A 164 (2019), 109-124.]). The classical example of such a set is given by a club. In this paper, we construct a broad family of linear sets meeting this lower bound, where we are able to prescribe the weight of the heaviest point to any value between $k/2$ and $k-1$. Our construction extends the known examples of linear sets of size $q^{k-1}+1$ in $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^h)$ constructed for $k=h=4$ [G. Bonoli and O. Polverino, $\mathbb{F}_q$-Linear blocking sets in $\mathrm{PG}(2,q^4)$, Innov. Incidence Geom. 2 (2005), 35--56.] and $k=h$ in [G. Lunardon and O. Polverino. Blocking sets of size $q^t+q^{t-1}+1$. J. Comb. Theory, Ser: A 90 (2000), 148-158.]. We determine the weight distribution of the constructed linear sets and describe them as the projection of a subgeometry. For small $k$, we investigate whether all linear sets of size $q^{k-1}+1$ arise from our construction. Finally, we modify our construction to define linear sets of size $q^{k-1}+q^{k-2}+\ldots+q^{k-l}+1$ in $\mathrm{PG}(l,q)$. This leads to new infinite families of small minimal blocking sets which are not of Rédei type.

Groups for which it is easy to detect graphical regular representations
Published • View Publication • BIB
We say that a finite group G is "DRR-detecting" if, for every subset S of G, either the Cayley digraph Cay(G,S) is a digraphical regular representation (that is, its automorphism group acts regularly on its vertex set) or there is a nontrivial group automorphism phi of G such that phi(S) = S. We show that every nilpotent DRR-detecting group is a p-group, but that the wreath product of two cyclic groups of order p is not DRR-detecting, for every odd prime p. We also show that if G and H are nontrivial groups that admit a digraphical regular representation and either gcd(|G|,|H|) = 1, or H is not DRR-detecting, then the direct product G x H is not DRR-detecting. Some of these results also have analogues for graphical regular representations.

A central limit theorem for descents of a Mallows permutation and its inverse
Published • View Publication • BIB
This paper studies the asymptotic distribution of descents $\des(w)$ in a permutation $w$, and its inverse, distributed according to the Mallows measure. The Mallows measure is a non-uniform probability measure on permutations introduced to study ranked data. Under this measure, permutations are weighted according to the number of inversions they contain, with the weighting controlled by a parameter $q$. The main results are a Berry-Esseen theorem for $\des(w)+\des(w^{-1})$ as well as a joint central limit theorem for $(\des(w),\des(w^{-1}))$ to a bivariate normal with a non-trivial correlation depending on $q$. The proof uses Stein's method with size-bias coupling along with a regenerative process associated to the Mallows measure.

Some unexpected properties of Littlewood-Richardson coefficients
Published • View Publication • BIB
We are interested in identities between Littlewood-Richardson coefficients, and hence in comparing different tensor product decompositions of the irreducible modules of the linear group GL n (C). A family of partitions-called near-rectangular-is defined, and we prove a stability result which basically asserts that the decomposition of the tensor product of two representations associated to near-rectangular partitions does not depend on n. Given a partition $λ$, of length at most n, denote by V n ($λ$) the associated simple GL n (C)-module. We conjecture that, if $λ$ is near-rectangular and $μ$ any partition, the decompositions of V n ($λ$) $\otimes$ V n ($μ$) and V n ($λ$) * $\otimes$ V n ($μ$) coincide modulo a mysterious bijection. We prove this conjecture if $μ$ is also near-rectangular and report several computer-assisted computations which reinforce our conjecture.

Ordering starlike trees by the totality of their spectral moments
The $k$-th spectral moment $M_k(G)$ of the adjacency matrix of a graph~$G$ represents the number of closed walks of length~$k$ in~$G$. We study here the partial order $\preceq$ of graphs, defined by $G\preceq H$ if $M_k(G)\leq M_k(H)$ for all $k\geq 0$, and are interested in the question when is $\preceq$ a linear order within a specified set of graphs? Our main result is that $\preceq$ is a linear order on each set of starlike trees with constant number of vertices. Recall that a connected graph $G$ is a starlike tree if it has a vertex~$u$ such that the components of $G-u$ are paths, called the branches of~$G$. It turns out that the $\preceq$ ordering of starlike trees with constant number of vertices coincides with the shortlex order of sorted sequence of their branch lengths.

Fragile minor-monotone parameters under random edge perturbation
Published in European J. Combin., 133:104305, 2026 • View Publication • BIB
We conduct a quantitative analysis of how many random edges need to be added to a base graph $H$ in order to significantly increase natural minor-monotone graph parameters of the resulting graph $R$. Specifically, we show that if $R$ is obtained from a connected graph $H$ by adding only a few random edges, the tree-width, genus, and Hadwiger number of $R$ become very large, irrespective of the structure of $H$.

On Limit Constants in Last Passage Percolation in Transitive Tournaments
We investigate the \emph{last passage percolation} problem on transitive tournaments, in the case when the edge weights are independent Bernoulli random variables. Given a transitive tournament on $n$ nodes with random weights on its edges, the last passage percolation problem seeks to find the weight $X_n$ of the heaviest path, where the weight of a path is the sum of the weights on its edges. We give a recurrence relation and use it to obtain a (bivariate) generating function for the probability generating function of $X_n$. This also gives exact combinatorial expressions for $\mathbb{E}[X_n]$, which was stated as an open problem by Yuster [\emph{Disc. Appl. Math.}, 2017]. We further determine scaling constants in the limit laws for $X_n$. Define $β_{tr}(p) := \lim_{n\to \infty} \frac{\mathbb{E}[X_n]}{n-1}$. Using singularity analysis, we show \[ β_{tr}(p) = \left(\sum_{n\geq 1}(1-p)^{n\choose 2}\right)^{-1}. \] In particular, $β_{tr}(0.5) = \left(\sum_{n\geq 1} 2^{-{n\choose 2}}\right)^{-1} = 0.60914971106...$. This settles the question of determining the value of $β_{tr}(0.5)$, initiated by Yuster. $β_{tr}(p)$ is also the limiting value in the strong law of large numbers for $X_n$, given by Foss, Martin, and Schmidt [\emph{Ann. Appl. Probab.}, 2014]. We also derive the scaling constants in the functional central limit theorem for $X_n$ proved by Foss et al.

Improved bounds for some facially constrained colorings
Published in Discuss. Math. Graph Theory 2020 • View Publication • BIB
A facial-parity edge-coloring of a $2$-edge-connected plane graph is a facially-proper edge-coloring in which every face is incident with zero or an odd number of edges of each color. A facial-parity vertex-coloring of a $2$-connected plane graph is a facially-proper vertex-coloring in which every face is incident with zero or an odd number of vertices of each color. Czap and Jendroľ (in Facially-constrained colorings of plane graphs: A survey, Discrete Math. 340 (2017), 2691--2703), conjectured that $10$ colors suffice in both colorings. We present an infinite family of counterexamples to both conjectures. A facial $(P_{k}, P_{\ell})$-WORM coloring of a plane graph $G$ is a coloring of the vertices such that $G$ contains no rainbow facial $k$-path and no monochromatic facial $\ell$-path. Czap, Jendroľ and Valiska (in WORM colorings of planar graphs, Discuss. Math. Graph Theory 37 (2017), 353--368), proved that for any integer $n\ge 12$ there exists a connected plane graph on $n$ vertices, with maximum degree at least $6$, having no facial $(P_{3},P_{3})$-WORM coloring. They also asked if there exists a graph with maximum degree $4$ having the same property. We prove that for any integer $n\ge 18$, there exists a connected plane graph, with maximum degree $4$, with no facial $(P_{3},P_{3})$-WORM coloring.

Babai's conjecture for high-rank classical groups with random generators
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G = \mathrm{SCl}_n(q)$ be a quasisimple classical group with $n$ large, and let $x_1, \dots, x_k \in G$ random, where $k \geq q^C$. We show that the diameter of the resulting Cayley graph is bounded by $q^2 n^{O(1)}$ with probability $1 - o(1)$. In the particular case $G = \mathrm{SL}_n(p)$ with $p$ a prime of bounded size, we show that the same holds for $k = 3$.

Tubes Containing String Modules in Symmetric Special Multiserial Algebras
Published • View Publication • BIB
Symmetric special multiserial algebras are algebras that correspond to decorated hypergraphs with orientation, called Brauer configurations. In this paper, we use the combinatorics of Brauer configurations to understand the module category of symmetric special multiserial algebras via their Auslander-Reiten quiver. In particular, we provide methods for determining the existence and ranks of tubes in the stable Auslander-Reiten quiver of symmetric special multiserial algebras using only the information from the underlying Brauer configuration. Firstly, we define a combinatorial walk around the Brauer configuration, called a Green `hyperwalk', which generalises the existing notion of a Green walk around a Brauer graph. Periodic Green hyperwalks are then shown to correspond to periodic projective resolutions of certain classes of string modules over the corresponding symmetric special multiserial algebra. Periodic Green hyperwalks thus determine certain classes of tubes in the stable Auslander-Reiten quiver, with the ranks of the tubes determined by the periods of the walks. Finally, we provide a description of additional rank two tubes in symmetric special multiserial algebras that do not arise from Green hyperwalks, but which nevertheless contain string modules at the mouth. This includes an explicit description of the space of extensions between string modules at the mouth of tubes of rank two.
Primitive Sets of Words
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a (finite or infinite) subset $X$ of the free monoid $A^*$ over a finite alphabet $A$, the rank of $X$ is the minimal cardinality of a set $F$ such that $X \subseteq F^*$. We say that a submonoid $M$ generated by $k$ elements of $A^*$ is {\em $k$-maximal} if there does not exist another submonoid generated by at most $k$ words containing $M$. We call a set $X \subseteq A^*$ {\em primitive} if it is the basis of a $|X|$-maximal submonoid. This definition encompasses the notion of primitive word -- in fact, $\{w\}$ is a primitive set if and only if $w$ is a primitive word. By definition, for any set $X$, there exists a primitive set $Y$ such that $X \subseteq Y^*$. We therefore call $Y$ a {\em primitive root} of $X$. As a main result, we prove that if a set has rank $2$, then it has a unique primitive root. To obtain this result, we prove that the intersection of two $2$-maximal submonoids is either the empty word or a submonoid generated by one single primitive word. For a single word $w$, we say that the set $\{x,y\}$ is a {\em bi-root} of $w$ if $w$ can be written as a concatenation of copies of $x$ and $y$ and $\{x,y\}$ is a primitive set. We prove that every primitive word $w$ has at most one bi-root $\{x,y\}$ such that $|x|+|y|<\sqrt{|w|}$. That is, the bi-root of a word is unique provided the word is sufficiently long with respect to the size (sum of lengths) of the root. Our results are also compared to previous approaches that investigate pseudo-repetitions, where a morphic involutive function $θ$ is defined on $A^*$. In this setting, the notions of $θ$-power, $θ$-primitive and $θ$-root are defined, and it is shown that any word has a unique $θ$-primitive root. This result can be obtained with our approach by showing that a word $w$ is $θ$-primitive if and only if $\{w, θ(w)\}$ is a primitive set.

The Iteration Number of Colour Refinement
The Colour Refinement procedure and its generalisation to higher dimensions, the Weisfeiler-Leman algorithm, are central subroutines in approaches to the graph isomorphism problem. In an iterative fashion, Colour Refinement computes a colouring of the vertices of its input graph. A trivial upper bound on the iteration number of Colour Refinement on graphs of order n is n-1. We show that this bound is tight. More precisely, we prove via explicit constructions that there are infinitely many graphs G on which Colour Refinement takes |G|-1 iterations to stabilise. Modifying the infinite families that we present, we show that for every natural number n >= 10, there are graphs on n vertices on which Colour Refinement requires at least n-2 iterations to reach stabilisation.

On the average Steiner 3-eccentricity of trees
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Steiner $k$-eccentricity of a vertex $v$ of a graph $G$ is the maximum Steiner distance over all $k$-subsets of $V(G)$ which contain $v$. In this paper Steiner $3$-eccentricity is studied on trees. Some general properties of the Steiner $3$-eccentricity of trees are given. A tree transformation which does not increase the average Steiner $3$-eccentricity is given. As its application, several lower and upper bounds for the average Steiner $3$-eccentricity of trees are derived.
On the distribution of the major index on standard Young tableaux
The study of permutation and partition statistics is a classical topic in enumerative combinatorics. The major index statistic on permutations was introduced a century ago by Percy MacMahon in his seminal works. In this extended abstract, we study the well-known generalization of the major index to standard Young tableaux. We present several new results. In one direction, we introduce and study two partial orders on the standard Young tableaux of a given partition shape, in analogy with the strong and weak Bruhat orders on permutations. The existence of such ranked poset structures allows us to classify the realizable major index statistics on standard tableaux of arbitrary straight shape and certain skew shapes, and has representation-theoretic consequences, both for the symmetric group and for Shephard-Todd groups. In a different direction, we consider the distribution of the major index on standard tableaux of arbitrary straight shape and certain skew shapes. We classify all possible limit laws for any sequence of such shapes in terms of a simple auxiliary statistic, "aft," generalizing earlier results of Canfield-Janson-Zeilberger, Chen-Wang-Wang, and others. We also study unimodality, log-concavity, and local limit properties.

Diagonal Ramsey via effective quasirandomness
Published • View Publication • BIB
We improve the upper bound for diagonal Ramsey numbers to \[R(k+1,k+1)\le\exp(-c(\log k)^2)\binom{2k}{k}\] for $k\ge 3$. To do so, we build on a quasirandomness and induction framework for Ramsey numbers introduced by Thomason and extended by Conlon, demonstrating optimal "effective quasirandomness" results about convergence of graphs. This optimality represents a natural barrier to improvement.

The Erdős-Hajnal conjecture for three colors and multiple forbidden patterns
Published • View Publication • BIB
Erdős and Szekeres's quantitative version of Ramsey's theorem asserts that any complete graph on n vertices that is edge-colored with two colors has a monochromatic clique on at least 1/2log(n) vertices. The famous Erdős-Hajnal conjecture asserts that forbidding fixed color patterns ensures larger monochromatic cliques. Specifically, it claims that for any fixed integer k and any clique K on k vertices edge-colored with two colors, there is a positive constant a such that in any complete n-vertex graph edge-colored with two colors that does not contain a copy of K, there is a monochromatic clique on at least n^a vertices. We consider edge-colorings with three colors. For a family H of triangles, each colored with colors from {r, b, y}, Forb(n,H) denotes a family of edge-colorings of the complete n-vertex graph using colors from {r, b, y} and containing none of the colorings from H. Let h_2(n, H) be the maximum q such that any coloring from Forb(n, H) has a clique on at least q vertices using at most two colors. We provide bounds on h_2(n, H) for all families H consisting of at most three triangles. For most of them, our bounds are asymptotically tight. This extends a result of Fox, Grinshpun, and Pach, who determined h_2(n, H) for H consisting of a rainbow triangle, and confirms the multicolor Erdős-Hajnal conjecture for these sets of patterns.
Weighted Prefix Normal Words: Mind the Gap
Published • View Publication • BIB
A prefix normal word is a binary word whose prefixes contain at least as many 1s as any of its factors of the same length. Introduced by Fici and Lipták in 2011 the notion of prefix normality is so far only defined for words over the binary alphabet. In this work we investigate a generalisation for finite words over arbitrary finite alphabets, namely weighted prefix normality. We prove that weighted prefix normality is more expressive than binary prefix normality. Furthermore, we investigate the existence of a weighted prefix normal form since weighted prefix normality comes with several new peculiarities that did not already occur in the binary case. We characterise these issues and finally present a standard technique to obtain a generalised prefix normal form for all words overarbitrary, finite alphabets.
The limit theorem with respect to the matrices on non-backtracking paths of a graph
Published in Ann. Comb., 27, 249-268 (2023) • View Publication • BIB
We give a limit theorem with respect to the matrices related to non-backtracking paths of a regular graph. The limit obtained closely resembles the $k$th moments of the arcsine law. Furthermore, we obtain the asymptotics of the averages of the $p^m$th Fourier coefficients of the cusp forms related to the Ramanujan graphs defined by A. Lubotzky, R. Phillips and P. Sarnak.
Optimum Distance Flag Codes from Spreads via Perfect Matchings in Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we study flag codes on the vector space $\mathbb{F}_q^n$, being $q$ a prime power and $\mathbb{F}_q$ the finite field of $q$ elements. More precisely, we focus on flag codes that attain the maximum possible distance (optimum distance flag codes) and can be obtained from a spread of $\mathbb{F}_q^n$. We characterize the set of admissible type vectors for this family of flag codes and also provide a construction of them based on well-known results about perfect matchings in graphs. This construction attains both the maximum distance for its type vector and the largest possible cardinality for that distance.
