Möbius Functions of Some Annular Noncrossing Objects
We present the Möbius functions of several posets of annular noncrossing objects, namely a self-dual extension of the annular noncrossing permutations, minimal length annular partitioned permutations, and annular noncrossing partitons.
Achromatic numbers of Kneser graphs
Published in Ars Mathematica Contemporanea-2021 • View Publication • BIB
Complete colorings have the property that any two color classes has at least an edge between them. Parameters such as the Grundy, achromatic and pseudoachromatic numbers comes from complete colorings, with some additional requirement. In this paper, we estimate these numbers in the Kneser graph $K(n,k)$ for some values of $n$ and $k$. We give the exact value of the achromatic number of $K(n,2)$.

Cantor-solus and Cantor-multus Distributions
The Cantor distribution is obtained from bitstrings; the Cantor-solus distribution (a new name) admits only strings without adjacent 1 bits. We review moments and order statistics associated with these. The Cantor-multus distribution is introduced -- which instead admits only strings without isolated 1 bits -- and more complicated formulas emerge.
Bounding the k-rainbow total domination number
Published • View Publication • BIB
Recently the notion of $k$-rainbow total domination was introduced for a graph $G$, motivated by a desire to reduce the problem of computing the total domination number of the generalized prism $G \Box K_k$ to an integer labeling problem on $G$. In this paper we further demonstrate usefulness of the labeling approach, presenting bounds on the rainbow total domination number in terms of the total domination number, the rainbow domination number and the rainbow total domination number, as well as the usual domination number, where the latter presents a generalization of a result by Goddard and Henning (2018). We establish Vizing-like results for rainbow domination and rainbow total domination. By stating a Vizing-like conjecture for rainbow total domination we present a different viewpoint on Vizing's original conjecture in the case of bipartite graphs.

A Graph Theoretic Formula for the Number of Primes $π(n)$
Let PR$[n]$ be the graph whose vertices are $2,3,\ldots,n$ with vertex $v$ adjacent to vertex $w$ if and only if $\gcd(v,w)>1$. It is shown that $π(n)$, the the number of primes no more than $n$, equals the Lovász number of this graph. This result suggests new avenues for graph-theoretic investigations of number-theoretic problems.

Optimal antipodal spherical codes in the space of spherical harmonics
In a previous study, we presented a construction of spherical 3-designs. In the current study, using this construction, we present new optimal antipodal spherical codes in the space of spherical harmonics. Our construction is a generalization of Bondarenko's work.

Singularities of Schubert Varieties within a Right Cell
Published in SIGMA 17 (2021), 070, 9 pages • View Publication • BIB
We describe an algorithm which pattern embeds, in the sense of Woo-Yong, any Bruhat interval of a symmetric group into an interval whose extremes lie in the same right Kazhdan-Lusztig cell. This apparently harmless fact has applications in finding examples of reducible associated varieties of $\mathfrak{sl}_n$-highest weight modules, as well as in the study of $W$-graphs for symmetric groups, and in comparing various bases of irreducible representations of the symmetric group or its Hecke algebra. For example, we are able to systematically produce many negative answers to a question from the 1980s of Borho-Brylinski and Joseph, which had been settled by Williamson via computer calculations only in 2014.
Laminar Tight Cuts in Matching Covered Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
An edge cut $C$ of a graph $G$ is {\it tight} if $|C \cap M|=1$ for every perfect matching $M$ of $G$.~Barrier cuts and 2-separation cuts are called {\it ELP-cuts}, which are two important types of tight cuts in matching covered graphs.~Edmonds, Lovász and Pulleyblank proved that if a matching covered graph has a nontrivial tight cut, then it also has a nontrivial ELP-cut.~Carvalho, Lucchesi, and Murty made a stronger conjecture: given any nontrivial tight cut $C$ in a matching covered graph $G$, there exists a nontrivial ELP-cut $D$ in $G$ which does not cross $C$.~We confirm the conjecture in this paper.

Independent sets in ($P_4+P_4$,Triangle)-free graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Maximum Weight Independent Set Problem (WIS) is a well-known NP-hard problem. A popular way to study WIS is to detect graph classes for which WIS can be solved in polynomial time, with particular reference to hereditary graph classes, i.e., defined by a hereditary graph property or equivalently by forbidding one or more induced subgraphs. Given two graphs $G$ and $H$, $G+H$ denotes the disjoint union of $G$ and $H$. This manuscript shows that (i) WIS can be solved for ($P_4+P_4$, Triangle)-free graphs in polynomial time, where a $P_4$ is an induced path of four vertices and a Triangle is a cycle of three vertices, and that in particular it turns out that (ii) for every ($P_4+P_4$, Triangle)-free graph $G$ there is a family ${\cal S}$ of subsets of $V(G)$ inducing (complete) bipartite subgraphs of $G$, which contains polynomially many members and can be computed in polynomial time, such that every maximal independent set of $G$ is contained in some member of ${\cal S}$. These results seem to be harmonic with respect to other polynomial results for WIS on certain [subclasses of] $S_{i,j,k}$-free graphs and to other structure results on [subclasses of] Triangle-free graphs.

The optimal proper connection number of a graph with given independence number
Published • View Publication • BIB
An edge-colored connected graph $G$ is properly connected if between every pair of distinct vertices, there exists a path that no two adjacent edges have a same color. Fujita (2019) introduced the optimal proper connection number ${\mathrm{pc}_{\mathrm{opt}}}(G)$ for a monochromatic connected graph $G$, to make a connected graph properly connected efficiently. More precisely, ${\mathrm{pc}_{\mathrm{opt}}}(G)$ is the smallest integer $p+q$ when one converts a given monochromatic graph $G$ into a properly connected graph by recoloring $p$ edges with $q$ colors. In this paper, we show that ${\mathrm{pc}_{\mathrm{opt}}}(G)$ has an upper bound in terms of the independence number $α(G)$. Namely, we prove that for a connected graph $G$, ${\mathrm{pc}_{\mathrm{opt}}}(G)\le \frac{5α(G)-1}{2}$. Moreoevr, for the case $α(G)\leq 3$, we improve the upper bound to $4$, which is tight.
Minimum Scan Cover with Angular Transition Costs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We provide a comprehensive study of a natural geometric optimization problem motivated by questions in the context of satellite communication and astrophysics. In the problem Minimum Scan Cover with Angular Costs (MSC), we are given a graph $G$ that is embedded in Euclidean space. The edges of $G$ need to be scanned, i.e., probed from both of their vertices. In order to scan their edge, two vertices need to face each other; changing the heading of a vertex takes some time proportional to the corresponding turn angle. Our goal is to minimize the time until all scans are completed, i.e., to compute a schedule of minimum makespan. We show that MSC is closely related to both graph coloring and the minimum (directed and undirected) cut cover problem; in particular, we show that the minimum scan time for instances in 1D and 2D lies in $Θ(\log χ(G))$, while for 3D the minimum scan time is not upper bounded by $χ(G)$. We use this relationship to prove that the existence of a constant-factor approximation implies $P=NP$, even for one-dimensional instances. In 2D, we show that it is NP-hard to approximate a minimum scan cover within less than a factor of $\frac{3}{2}$, even for bipartite graphs; conversely, we present a $\frac{9}{2}$-approximation algorithm for this scenario. Generally, we give an $O(c)$-approximation for $k$-colored graphs with $k\leq χ(G)^c$. For general metric cost functions, we provide approximation algorithms whose performance guarantee depend on the arboricity of the graph.

Distance evolutions in growing preferential attachment graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the evolution of the graph distance and weighted distance between two fixed vertices in dynamically growing random graph models. More precisely, we consider preferential attachment models with power-law exponent $τ\in(2,3)$, sample two vertices $u_t,v_t$ uniformly at random when the graph has $t$ vertices, and study the evolution of the graph distance between these two fixed vertices as the surrounding graph grows. This yields a discrete-time stochastic process in $t'\geq t$, called the distance evolution. We show that there is a tight strip around the function $4\frac{\log\log(t)-\log(\log(t'/t)\vee1)}{|\log(τ-2)|}\vee 2$ that the distance evolution never leaves with high probability as $t$ tends to infinity. We extend our results to weighted distances, where every edge is equipped with an i.i.d. copy of a non-negative random variable $L$.

Cube moves for $s$-embeddings and $α$-realizations
Published in Ann. Inst. Henri Poincaré Comb. Phys. Interact., 10(4), 781-817, 2023 • View Publication • BIB
Chelkak introduced $s$-embeddings as tilings by tangential quads which provide the right setting to study the Ising model with arbitrary coupling constants on arbitrary planar graphs. We prove the existence and uniqueness of a local transformation for $s$-embeddings called the cube move, which consists in flipping three quadrilaterals in such a way that the resulting tiling is also in the class of $s$-embeddings. In passing, we give a new and simpler formula for the change in coupling constants for the Ising star-triangle transformation which is conjugated to the cube move for $s$-embeddings. We introduce more generally the class of $α$-embeddings as tilings of a portion of the plane by quadrilaterals such that the side lengths of each quadrilateral $ABCD$ satisfy the relation $AB^α+CD^α=AD^α+BC^α$, providing a common generalization for harmonic embeddings adapted to the study of resistor networks ($α=2$) and for $s$-embeddings ($α=1$). We investigate existence and uniqueness properties of the cube move for these $α$-embeddings.

A Real Polynomial for Bipartite Graph Minimum Weight Perfect Matchings
In a recent paper, Beniamini and Nisan gave a closed-form formula for the unique multilinear polynomial for the Boolean function determining whether a given bipartite graph $G \subseteq K_{n,n}$ has a perfect matching, together with an efficient algorithm for computing the coefficients of the monomials of this polynomial. We give the following generalization: Given an arbitrary non-negative weight function $w$ on the edges of $K_{n,n}$, consider its set of minimum weight perfect matchings. We give the real multilinear polynomial for the Boolean function which determines if a graph $G \subseteq K_{n,n}$ contains one of these minimum weight perfect matchings.

Introduction to dominated edge chromatic number of a graph
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce and study the dominated edge coloring of a graph. A dominated edge coloring of a graph $G$ is a proper edge coloring of $G$ such that each color class is dominated by at least one edge of $G$. The minimum number of colors among all dominated edge coloring is called the dominated edge chromatic number, denoted by $χ_{dom}^{\prime}(G)$. We obtain some properties of $χ_{dom}^{\prime}(G)$ and compute it for specific graphs. Also we examine the effects on $χ_{dom}^{\prime}(G)$ when $G$ is modified by operations on vertex and edge of $G$. Finally, we consider the $k$-subdivision of $G$ and study the dominated edge chromatic number of these kind of graphs.

The positive Dressian equals the positive tropical Grassmannian
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Dressian and the tropical Grassmannian parameterize abstract and realizable tropical linear spaces; but in general, the Dressian is much larger than the tropical Grassmannian. There are natural positive notions of both of these spaces -- the positive Dressian, and the positive tropical Grassmannian (which we introduced roughly fifteen years ago) -- so it is natural to ask how these two positive spaces compare. In this paper we show that the positive Dressian equals the positive tropical Grassmannian. Using the connection between the positive Dressian and regular positroidal subdivisions of the hypersimplex, we use our result to give a new "tropical" proof of da Silva's 1987 conjecture (first proved in 2017 by Ardila-Rincon-Williams) that all positively oriented matroids are realizable. We also show that the finest regular positroidal subdivisions of the hypersimplex consist of series-parallel matroid polytopes, and achieve equality in Speyer's f-vector theorem. Finally we give an example of a positroidal subdivision of the hypersimplex which is not regular, and make a connection to the theory of tropical hyperplane arrangements.

On the largest eigenvalue of a mixed graph with partial orientation
Published in Linear Algebra and its Applications, 627(2021),150-161 • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a connected graph and let $T$ be a spanning tree of $G$. A partial orientation $σ$ of $G$ respect to $T$ is an orientation of the edges of $G$ except those edges of $T$, the resulting graph associated with which is denoted by $G_T^σ$. In this paper we prove that there exists a partial orientation $σ$ of $G$ respect to $T$ such that the largest eigenvalue of the Hermitian adjacency matrix of $G_T^σ$ is at most the largest absolute value of the roots of the matching polynomial of $G$.

On the Asymptotic Growth of the Number of Tree-Child Networks
Published • View Publication • BIB
In a recent paper, McDiarmid, Semple, and Welsh (2015) showed that the number of tree-child networks with $n$ leaves has the factor $n^{2n}$ in its main asymptotic growth term. In this paper, we improve this by completely identifying the main asymptotic growth term up to a constant. More precisely, we show that the number of tree-child networks with $n$ leaves grows like \[ Θ\left(n^{-2/3}e^{a_1(3n)^{1/3}}\left(\frac{12}{e^2}\right)^{n}n^{2n}\right), \] where $a_1=-2.338107410\cdots$ is the largest root of the Airy function of first kind. For the proof, we bijectively map the underlying graph-theoretical problem onto a problem on words. For the latter, we can find a recurrence to which a recent powerful asymptotic method of Elvey Price, Fang, and Wallner (2019) can be applied.

A weakly distance-regular digraph is thick if its attached scheme is regular. In this paper, we show that each commutative thick weakly distance-regular digraph has a thick weakly distance-regular subdigraph such that the corresponding quotient digraph falls into six families of thick weakly distance-regular digraphs up to isomorphism.

Law of large numbers for Betti numbers of homogeneous and spatially independent random simplicial complexes
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Linial-Meshulam complex model is a natural higher-dimensional analog of the Erdős-Rényi graph model. In recent years, Linial and Peled established a limit theorem for Betti numbers of Linial-Meshulam complexes with an appropriate scaling of the underlying parameter. The present paper aims to extend that result to more-general random simplicial complex models. We introduce a class of homogeneous and spatially independent random simplicial complexes, including the Linial-Meshulam complex model and the random clique complex model as special cases, and we study the asymptotic behavior of their Betti numbers. Moreover, we obtain the convergence of the empirical spectral distributions of their Laplacians. A key element in the argument is the local weak convergence of simplicial complexes. Inspired by the work of Linial and Peled, we establish the local weak limit theorem for homogeneous and spatially independent random simplicial complexes.
