A bialternant formula for odd symplectic characters and its application
Published in Josai Mathematical Monographs 12 (2020), 99-116 • View Publication • BIB
We present a bialternant formula for odd symplectic characters, which are the characters of indecomposable modules of odd symplectic groups introduced by R. Proctor. As an application, we give a linear algebraic proof to an odd symplectic character identity due to R. P. Brent, C. Krattenthaler and S. O. Warnaar.

Prime powers dividing products of consecutive integer values of $x^{2^n}+1$
Let $n$ be a positive integer and $f(x) := x^{2^n}+1$. In this paper, we study orders of primes dividing products of the form $P_{m,n}:=f(1)f(2)\cdots f(m)$. We prove that if $m > \max\{10^{12},4^{n+1}\}$, then there exists a prime divisor $p$ of $P_{m,n}$ such that ord$_{p}(P_{m,n} )\leq n\cdot 2^{n-1}$. For $n=2$, we establish that for every positive integer $m$, there exists a prime divisor $p$ of $P_{m,2}$ such that ord$_{p} (P_{m,2}) \leq 4$. Consequently, $P_{m,2}$ is never a fifth or higher power. This extends work of Cilleruelo who studied the case $n=1$.
Partially APN Boolean functions and classes of functions that are not APN infinitely often
In this paper we define a notion of partial APNness and find various characterizations and constructions of classes of functions satisfying this condition. We connect this notion to the known conjecture that APN functions modified at a point cannot remain APN. In the second part of the paper, we find conditions for some transformations not to be partially APN, and in the process, we find classes of functions that are never APN for infinitely many extensions of the prime field $\F_2$, extending some earlier results of Leander and Rodier.

Generating Functions for Domino Matchings in the $2\times k$ Game of Memory
Published in Journal of Integer Sequences, Vol. 22 (2019), Article 19.8.7 • Search Publication
When all the elements of the multiset $\{1,1,2,2,3,3,\ldots,k,k\}$ are placed in the cells of a $2\times k$ rectangular array, in how many configurations are exactly $v$ of the pairs directly over top one another, and exactly $h$ directly beside one another --- thus forming $2\times 1$ or $1\times 2$ dominoes? We consider the sum of matching numbers over the graphs obtained by deleting $h$ horizontal and $v$ vertical vertex pairs from the $2\times k$ grid graph in all possible ways, providing a generating function for these aggregate matching polynomials. We use this result to derive a formal generating function enumerating the domino matchings, making connections with linear chord diagrams.
The Partial differential coefficients for the second weghted Bartholdi zeta function of a graph
We consider the second weighted Bartholdi zeta function of a graph $G$, and present weighted versions for the result of Li and Hou's on the partial derivatives of the determinant part in the determinant expression of the Bartholdi zeta function of $G$. Furthermore, we give a formula for the weighted Kirchhoff index of a regular covering of $G$ in terms of that of $G$.

Parametrised Algorithms for Directed Modular Width
Many well-known NP-hard algorithmic problems on directed graphs resist efficient parametrisations with most known width measures for directed graphs, such as directed treewidth, DAG-width, Kelly-width and many others. While these focus on measuring how close a digraph is to an oriented tree resp. a directed acyclic graph, in this paper, we investigate directed modular width as a parameter, which is closer to the concept of clique-width. We investigate applications of modular decompositions of directed graphs to a wide range of algorithmic problems and derive FPT-algorithms for several well-known digraph-specific NP-hard problems, namely minimum (weight) directed feedback vertex set, minimum (weight) directed dominating set, digraph colouring, directed Hamiltonian path/cycle, partitioning into paths, (capacitated) vertex-disjoint directed paths, and the directed subgraph homeomorphism problem. The latter yields a polynomial-time algorithm for detecting topological minors in digraphs of bounded directed modular width. Finally we illustrate that also other structural digraph parameters, such as the directed pathwidth and the cycle-rank can be computed efficiently using directed modular width as a parameter.

Spanning Trees and Domination in Hypercubes
Let $L(G)$ denote the maximum number of leaves in any spanning tree of a connected graph $G$. We show the (known) result that for the $n$-cube $Q_n$, $L(Q_n) \sim 2^n = |V(Q_n)|$ as $n\rightarrow \infty$. Examining this more carefully, consider the minimum size of a connected dominating set of vertices $γ_c(Q_n)$, which is $2^n-L(Q_n)$ for $n\ge2$. We show that $γ_c(Q_n)\sim 2^n/n$. We use Hamming codes and an "expansion" method to construct leafy spanning trees in $Q_n$.

Combinatorial anti-concentration inequalities, with applications
Published in Math. Proc. Camb. Phil. Soc. 171 (2021) 227-248 • View Publication • BIB
We prove several different anti-concentration inequalities for functions of independent Bernoulli-distributed random variables. First, motivated by a conjecture of Alon, Hefetz, Krivelevich and Tyomkyn, we prove some "Poisson-type" anti-concentration theorems that give bounds of the form 1/e + o(1) for the point probabilities of certain polynomials. Second, we prove an anti-concentration inequality for polynomials with nonnegative coefficients which extends the classical Erdős-Littlewood-Offord theorem and improves a theorem of Meka, Nguyen and Vu for polynomials of this type. As an application, we prove some new anti-concentration bounds for subgraph counts in random graphs.

Leaves for packings with block size four
We consider maximum packings of edge-disjoint $4$-cliques in the complete graph $K_n$. When $n \equiv 1$ or $4 \pmod{12}$, these are simply block designs. In other congruence classes, there are necessarily uncovered edges; we examine the possible `leave' graphs induced by those edges. We give particular emphasis to the case $n \equiv 0$ or $3 \pmod{12}$, when the leave is $2$-regular. Colbourn and Ling settled the case of Hamiltonian leaves in this case. We extend their construction and use several additional direct and recursive constructions to realize a variety of $2$-regular leaves. For various subsets $S \subseteq \{3,4,5,\dots\}$, we establish explicit lower bounds on $n$ to guarantee the existence of maximum packings with any possible leave whose cycle lengths belong to $S$.

Bipartite partition-connected factors with small degrees
In this paper, we show that every $2m$-partition-connected graph $G$ has a bipartite $m$-partition-connected factor $H$ such that for each vertex $v$, $d_H(v)\le \lceil \frac{3}{4}d_G(v)\rceil$. A graph $H$ is said to be $m$-partition-connected, if it contains $m$ edge-disjoint spanning trees. As an application, we conclude that tough enough graphs with appropriate number of vertices have a bipartite $m$-partition-connected factor with maximum degree at most $3m+1$. Finally, we prove that tough enough graphs of order at least $3k$ admit a bipartite connected factor whose degrees lie in the set $\{k,2k,3k,4k\}$.
Bounding and approximating minimum maximal matchings in regular graphs
The edge domination number $γ_e(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the minimum size of a maximal matching in $G$. It is well known that this parameter is computationally very hard, and several approximation algorithms and heuristics have been studied. In the present paper, we provide best possible upper bounds on $γ_e(G)$ for regular and non-regular graphs $G$ in terms of their order and maximum degree. Furthermore, we discuss algorithmic consequences of our results and their constructive proofs.

Recurrence relations for Wronskian Laguerre polynomials
Published in Integral Transforms and Special Functions 32:5-8 (2021), 395-406 • View Publication • BIB
The 3-term recurrence relation for Hermite polynomials was recently generalized to a recurrence relation for Wronskians of Hermite polynomials. In this note, a similar generalization for Laguerre polynomials is obtained.
Critical graphs for the chromatic edge-stability number
The chromatic edge-stability number ${\rm es}_χ(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the minimum number of edges whose removal results in a spanning subgraph $G'$ with $χ(G')=χ(G)-1$. Edge-stability critical graphs are introduced as the graphs $G$ with the property that ${\rm es}_χ(G-e) < {\rm es}_χ(G)$ holds for every edge $e\in E(G)$. If $G$ is an edge-stability critical graph with $χ(G)=k$ and ${\rm es}_χ(G)=\ell$, then $G$ is $(k,\ell)$-critical. Graphs which are $(3,2)$-critical and contain at most four odd cycles are classified. It is also proved that the problem of deciding whether a graph $G$ has $χ(G)=k$ and is critical for the chromatic number can be reduced in polynomial time to the problem of deciding whether a graph is $(k,2)$-critical.

Combinatorics and their evolution in resolution of embedded algebroid surfaces
The seminal concept of characteristic polygon of an embedded algebroid surface, first developed by Hironaka, seems well suited for combinatorially (perhaps even effectively) tracking of a resolution process. However, the way this object evolves through the resolution of singularities was not really well understood, as some references had pointed out. The aim of this paper is to explain, in a clear way, how this object changes as the surface gets resolved. In order to get a precise description of the phenomena involved, we need to use different techniques and ideas. Eventually, some effective results regarding the number of blow-ups needed to decrease the multiplicity are obtained as a side product.
Separators - a new statistic for permutations
A digit $π_j$ in a permutation $π=[π_1,\ldots,π_n]\in S_n$ is defined to be a separator of $π$ if by omitting it from $π$ we get a new $2-$block. In this work we introduce a new statistic, the number of separators, on the symmetric group $S_n$ and calculate its distribution over $S_n$. We also provide some enumerative and asymptotic results regarding this statistic.

Twenty-Vertex model with domain wall boundaries and domino tilings
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 27(2) (2020), #P2.13 • View Publication • BIB
We consider the triangular lattice ice model (20-Vertex model) with four types of domain-wall type boundary conditions. In types 1 and 2, the configurations are shown to be equinumerous to the quarter-turn symmetric domino tilings of an Aztec-like holey square, with a central cross-shaped hole. The proof of this statement makes extensive use of integrability and of a connection to the 6-Vertex model. The type 3 configurations are conjectured to be in same number as domino tilings of a particular triangle. The four enumeration problems are reformulated in terms of four types of Alternating Phase Matrices with entries 0 and sixth roots of unity, subject to suitable alternation conditions. Our result is a generalization of the ASM-DPP correspondence. Several refined versions of the above correspondences are also discussed.

On the Clique-Width of Unigraphs
Clique-width is a well-studied graph parameter. For graphs of bounded clique-width, many problems that are NP-hard in general can be polynomial-time solvable. The fact motivates several studies to investigate whether the clique-width of graphs in a certain class is bounded or not. We focus on unigraphs, that is, graphs that are uniquely determined by their degree sequences up to isomorphism. We show that every unigraph has clique-width at most 4. It follows that many problems that are NP-hard in general are polynomial-time solvable for unigraphs.

Oriented coloring of graphs with low maximum degree
Duffy et al. [C. Duffy, G. MacGillivray, and É. Sopena, Oriented colourings of graphs with maximum degree three and four, Discrete Mathematics, 342(4), p. 959--974, 2019] recently considered the oriented chromatic number of connected oriented graphs with maximum degree $3$ and $4$, proving it is at most $9$ and $69$, respectively. In this paper, we improve these results by showing that the oriented chromatic number of non-necessarily connected oriented graphs with maximum degree $3$ (resp. $4$) is at most $9$ (resp. $26$). The bound of $26$ actually follows from a general result which determines properties of a target graph to be universal for graphs of bounded maximum degree. This generalization also allows us to get the upper bound of $90$ (resp. $306$, $1322$) for the oriented chromatic number of graphs with maximum degree $5$ (resp. $6$, $7$).

Anticoncentration for subgraph counts in random graphs
Fix a graph $H$ and some $p\in (0,1)$, and let $X_H$ be the number of copies of $H$ in a random graph $G(n,p)$. Random variables of this form have been intensively studied since the foundational work of Erdős and Rényi. There has been a great deal of progress over the years on the large-scale behaviour of $X_H$, but the more challenging problem of understanding the small-ball probabilities has remained poorly understood until now. More precisely, how likely can it be that $X_H$ falls in some small interval or is equal to some particular value? In this paper we prove the almost-optimal result that if $H$ is connected then for any $x\in \mathbb{N}$ we have $\Pr(X_H=x)\le n^{1-v(H)+o(1)}$. Our proof proceeds by iteratively breaking $X_H$ into different components which fluctuate at "different scales", and relies on a new anticoncentration inequality for random vectors that behave "almost linearly".
