On locally $n \times n$ grid graphs
We investigate locally $n \times n$ grid graphs, that is, graphs in which the neighbourhood of any vertex is the Cartesian product of two complete graphs on $n$ vertices. We consider the subclass of these graphs for which each pair of vertices at distance two is joined by sufficiently many paths of length $2$. The number of such paths is known to be at most $2n$ by previous work of Blokhuis and Brouwer. We show that if each distance two pair is joined by at least $n-1$ paths of length $2$ then the diameter is bounded by $O(\log(n))$, while if each pair is joined by at least $2(n-1)$ such paths then the diameter is at most $3$ and we give a tight upper bound on the order of the graphs. We show that graphs meeting this upper bound are distance-regular antipodal covers of complete graphs. We exhibit an infinite family of such graphs which are locally $n \times n$ grid for odd prime powers $n$, and apply these results to locally $5 \times 5$ grid graphs to obtain a classification for the case where either all $μ$-graphs have order at least $8$ or all $μ$-graphs have order $c$ for some constant $c$.

The asymptotic number of prefix normal words
We show that the number of prefix normal binary words of length $n$ is $2^{n-Θ((\log n)^2)}$. We also show that the maximum number of binary words of length $n$ with a given fixed prefix normal form is $2^{n-O(\sqrt{n\log n})}$.

Hereditary species as monoidal decomposition spaces, comodule bialgebras, and operadic categories
We show that Schmitt's hereditary species induce monoidal decomposition spaces, and exhibit Schmitt's bialgebra construction as an instance of the general bialgebra construction on a monoidal decomposition space. We show furthermore that this bialgebra structure coacts on the underlying restriction-species bialgebra structure so as to form a comodule bialgebra. Finally, we show that hereditary species induce a new family of examples of operadic categories in the sense of Batanin and Markl.
An asymptotic Formula for the iterated exponential Bell Numbers
In 1938 E. T. Bell introduced "The Iterated Exponential Integers". He proved that these numbers may be expressed by polynomials with rational coefficients. However, Bell gave no formulas for any of the coefficients except the trivial one, which is always 1. Our task has been to find the coefficient of the leading term, giving asymptotic information about these numbers.

Long $A$-$B$-paths have the edge-Erd\H os-Pósa property
For a fixed integer $\ell$ a path is long if its length is at least $\ell$. We prove that for all integers $k$ and $\ell$ there is a number $f(k,\ell)$ such that for every graph $G$ and vertex sets $A,B$ the graph $G$ either contains $k$ edge-disjoint long $A$-$B$-paths or it contains an edge set $F$ of size $|F|\leq f(k,\ell)$ that meets every long $A$-$B$-path. This is the edge analogue of a theorem of Montejano and Neumann-Lara (1984). We also prove a similar result for long $A$-paths and long $\mathcal{S}$-paths.

On the general position problem on Kneser graphs
In a graph $G$, a geodesic between two vertices $x$ and $y$ is a shortest path connecting $x$ to $y$. A subset $S$ of the vertices of $G$ is in general position if no vertex of $S$ lies on any geodesic between two other vertices of $S$. The size of a largest set of vertices in general position is the general position number that we denote by $gp(G)$. Recently, Ghorbani et al, proved that for any $k$ if $n\ge k^3-k^2+2k-2$, then $gp(Kn_{n,k})=\binom{n-1}{k-1}$, where $Kn_{n,k}$ denotes the Kneser graph. We improve on their result and show that the same conclusion holds for $n\ge 2.5k-0.5$ and this bound is best possible. Our main tools are a result on cross-intersecting families and a slight generalization of Bollobás's inequality on intersecting set pair systems.

Supersaturation for subgraph counts
Published • View Publication • BIB
The classic extremal problem is that of computing the maximum number of edges in an $F$-free graph. In the case where $F=K_{r+1}$, the extremal number was determined by Turán. Later results, known as supersaturation theorems, proved that in a graph containing more edges than the extremal number, there must also be many copies of $K_{r+1}$. Alon and Shikhelman introduced a broader class of problems asking for the maximum number of copies of a graph $T$ in an $F$-free graph. In this paper, we determine some of these generalized extremal numbers and prove supersaturation results for them.
On the Sprague-Grundy function of compound games
The classical game of {\sc Nim} can be naturally extended and played on an arbitrary hypergraph $\cH \subseteq 2^V \setminus \{\emptyset\}$ whose vertices $V = \{1, \ldots, n\}$ correspond to piles of stones. By one move a player chooses an edge $H$ of $\cH$ and reduces arbitrarily all piles $i \in H$. In 1901 Bouton solved the classical {\sc Nim} for which $\cH = \{\{1\}, \ldots, \{n\}\}$. In 1910 Moore introduced and solved a more general game $k$-{\sc Nim}, for which $\cH = \{H \subseteq V \mid |H| \leq k\}$, where $1 \leq k < n$. In 1980 Jenkyns and Mayberry obtained an explicit formula for the Sprague-Grundy function of Moore's {\sc Nim} for the case $k+1 = n$. Recently it was shown that the same formula works for a large class of hypergraphs. In this paper we study combinatorial properties of these hypergraphs and obtain explicit formulas for the Sprague-Grundy functions of the conjunctive and selective compounds of the corresponding hypergraph {\sc Nim} games.
On transversal and 2-packing numbers in uniform linear systems
A linear system is a pair $(P,\mathcal{L})$ where $\mathcal{L}$ is a family of subsets on a ground finite set $P$, such that $|l\cap l^\prime|\leq 1$, for every $l,l^\prime \in \mathcal{L}$. The elements of $P$ and $\mathcal{L}$ are called points and lines, respectively, and the linear system is called intersecting if any pair of lines intersect in exactly one point. A subset $T$ of points of $P$ is a transversal of $(P,\mathcal{L})$ if $T$ intersects any line, and the transversal number, $τ(P,\mathcal{L})$, is the minimum order of a transversal. On the other hand, a 2-packing set of a linear system $(P,\mathcal{L})$ is a set $R$ of lines, such that any three of them have a common point, then the 2-packing number of $(P,\mathcal{L})$, $ν_2(P,\mathcal{L})$, is the size of a maximum 2-packing set. It is known that the transversal number $τ(P,\mathcal{L})$ is bounded above by a quadratic function of $ν_2(P,\mathcal{L})$. An open problem is to haracterize the families of linear systems which satisfies $τ(P,\mathcal{L})\leq λν_2(P,\mathcal{L})$, for some $λ\geq1$. In this paper, we give an infinite family of linear systems $(P,\mathcal{L})$ which satisfies $τ(P,\mathcal{L})=ν_2(P,\mathcal{L})$ with smallest possible cardinality of $\mathcal{L}$, as well as some properties of $r$-uniform intersecting linear systems $(P,\mathcal{L})$, such that $τ(P,\mathcal{L})=ν_2(P,\mathcal{L})=r$. Moreover, we state a characterization of $4$-uniform intersecting linear systems $(P,\mathcal{L})$ with $τ(P,\mathcal{L})=ν_2(P,\mathcal{L})=4$.

Maximizing 2-Independent Sets in 3-Uniform Hypergraphs
There has been interest recently in maximizing the number of independent sets in graphs. For example, the Kahn-Zhao theorem gives an upper bound on the number of independent sets in a $d$-regular graph. Similarly, it is a corollary of the Kruskal-Katona theorem that the lex graph has the maximum number of independent sets in a graph of fixed size and order. In this paper we solve two equivalent problems. The first is: what $3$-uniform hypergraph on a ground set of size $n$, having at least $t$ edges, has the most $2$-independent sets? Here a $2$--independent set is a subset of vertices containing fewer than $2$ vertices from each edge. This is equivalent to the problem of determining which graph on $n$ vertices having at least $t$ triangles has the most independent sets. The (hypergraph) answer is that, ignoring some transient and some persistent exceptions, a $(2,3,1)$-lex style $3$-graph is optimal. We also discuss the problem of maximizing the number of $s$-independent sets in $r$-uniform hypergraphs of fixed size and order, proving some simple results, and conjecture an asymptotically correct general solution to the problem.

The Average-Case Complexity of Counting Cliques in Erdos-Renyi Hypergraphs
We consider the problem of counting $k$-cliques in $s$-uniform Erdos-Renyi hypergraphs $G(n,c,s)$ with edge density $c$, and show that its fine-grained average-case complexity can be based on its worst-case complexity. We prove the following: 1. Dense Erdos-Renyi graphs and hypergraphs: Counting $k$-cliques on $G(n,c,s)$ with $k$ and $c$ constant matches its worst-case time complexity up to a $\mathrm{polylog}(n)$ factor. Assuming randomized ETH, it takes $n^{Ω(k)}$ time to count $k$-cliques in $G(n,c,s)$ if $k$ and $c$ are constant. 2. Sparse Erdos-Renyi graphs and hypergraphs: When $c = Θ(n^{-α})$, we give several algorithms exploiting the sparsity of $G(n, c, s)$ that are faster than the best known worst-case algorithms. Complementing this, based on a fine-grained worst-case assumption, our results imply a different average-case phase diagram for each fixed $α$ depicting a tradeoff between a runtime lower bound and $k$. Surprisingly, in the hypergraph case ($s \ge 3$), these lower bounds are tight against our algorithms exactly when $c$ is above the Erdős-Rényi $k$-clique percolation threshold. This is the first worst-case-to-average-case hardness reduction for a problem on Erdős-Rényi hypergraphs that we are aware of. We also give a variant of our result for computing the parity of the $k$-clique count that tolerates higher error probability.

Caps and progression-free sets in $\mathbb{Z}_m^n$
We study progression-free sets in the abelian groups $G=(\mathbb{Z}_m^n,+)$. Let $r_k(\mathbb{Z}_m^n)$ denote the maximal size of a set $S \subset \mathbb{Z}_m^n$ that does not contain a proper arithmetic progression of length $k$. We give lower bound constructions, which e.g. include that $r_3(\mathbb{Z}_m^n) \geq C_m \frac{((m+2)/2)^n}{\sqrt{n}}$, when $m$ is even. When $m=4$ this is of order at least $3^n/\sqrt{n}\gg \vert G \vert^{0.7924}$. Moreover, if the progression-free set $S\subset \mathbb{Z}_4^n$ satisfies a technical condition, which dominates the problem at least in low dimension, then $|S|\leq 3^n$ holds. We present a number of new methods which cover lower bounds for several infinite families of parameters $m,k,n$, which includes for example: $r_6(\mathbb{Z}_{125}^n) \geq (85-o(1))^n$. For $r_3(\mathbb{Z}_4^n)$ we determine the exact values, when $n \leq 5$, e.g. $r_3(\mathbb{Z}_4^5)=124$, and for $r_4(\mathbb{Z}_4^n)$ we determine the exact values, when $n \leq 4$, e.g. $r_4(\mathbb{Z}_4^4)=128$.

Slow Fibonacci Walks
For a positive integer $n$, we study the number of steps to reach $n$ by a {\it Fibonacci walk} for some starting pair $a_1$ and $a_2$ satisfying the recurrence of $a_{k+2}=a_{k+1}+a_k$. The problem of slow Fibonacci walks, first suggested by Richard Stanley, is to determine the maximum number $s(n)$ of steps for such a Fibonacci walk ending at $n$. Stanley conjectured that for most $n$, there is a slow Fibonacci walk reaching $n = a_s$ with the property that $a_{s+1}$ is the integer closest to $φn$ where $φ=(1+\sqrt{5})/2$. We prove that this is true for only a positive fraction of $n$. We give explicit formulas for the choice of the starting pairs and the determination of $s(n)$ by giving a characterization theorem. We also derive a number of density results concerning the distribution of down and up cases (that is, those $n$ with $a_{s+1}=\lfloor φn\rfloor$ or $\lceil φn \rceil$, respectively), as well as for more general `paradoxical' cases.
Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes: a story of flow and order polytopes
Published • View Publication • BIB
Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes are prominent objects in algebraic combinatorics. The number of integer points of the Gelfand-Tsetlin polytope $\mathrm{GT}(λ)$ is equal to the dimension of the corresponding irreducible representation of $GL(n)$. It is well-known that the Gelfand-Tsetlin polytope is a marked order polytope; the authors have recently shown it to be a flow polytope. In this paper, we draw corollaries from this result and establish a general theory connecting marked order polytopes and flow polytopes.

Presentations of Transversal Valuated Matroids
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given $d$ row vectors of $n$ tropical numbers, $d<n$, the tropical Stiefel map constructs a version of their row space, whose Plücker coordinates are tropical determinants. We explicitly describe the fibers of this map. From the viewpoint of matroid theory, the tropical Stiefel map defines a generalization of transversal matroids in the valuated context, and our results are the valuated generalizations of theorems of Brualdi and Dinolt, Mason and others on the set of all set families that present a given transversal matroid. We show that a connected valuated matroid is transversal if and only if all of its connected initial matroids are. The duals of our results describe complete stable intersections via valuated strict gammoids.

Sects and lattice paths over the Lagrangian Grassmannian
We examine Borel subgroup orbits in the classical symmetric space of type CI, which are parametrized by skew symmetric (n, n)-clans. We describe bijections between such clans, certain weighted lattice paths, and pattern-avoiding signed involutions, and we give a cell decomposition of the symmetric space in terms of collections of clans called sects. The largest sect with a conjectural closure order is isomorphic (as a poset) to the Bruhat order on partial involutions.

The facets of the spanning trees polytope
Let $G=(V, E)$ be an undirected graph. The spanning trees polytope $P(G)$ is the convex hull of the characteristic vectors of all spanning trees of $G$. In this paper, we describe all facets of $P(G)$ as a consequence of the facets of the bases polytope $P(M)$ of a matroid $M$, i.e., the convex hull of the characteristic vectors of all bases of $M$.

Bilinear Forms on Finite Abelian Groups and Group-Invariant Butson Hadamard Matrices
Let $K$ be a finite abelian group and let $\exp(K)$ denote the least common multiple of the orders of the elements of $K$. A $BH(K,h)$ matrix is a $K$-invariant $|K|\times |K|$ matrix $H$ whose entries are complex $h$th roots of unity such that $HH^*=|K|I$, where $H^*$ denotes the complex conjugate transpose of $H$, and $I$ is the identity matrix of order $|K|$. Let $ν_p(x)$ denote the $p$-adic valuation of the integer $x$. Using bilinear forms on $K$, we show that a $BH(K,h)$ exists whenever (i) $ν_p(h) \geq \lceil ν_p(\exp(K))/2 \rceil$ for every prime divisor $p$ of $|K|$ and (ii) $ν_2(h) \ge 2$ if $ν_2(|K|)$ is odd and $K$ has a direct factor $\mathbb{Z}_2$. Employing the field descent method, we prove that these conditions are necessary for the existence of a $BH(K,h)$ matrix in the case where $K$ is cyclic of prime power order.

Non-projective cyclic codes whose check polynomial contains two zeros
Let $n\geq 3$ be a positive integer and let $\mathbb{F}_{q^k}$ be the splitting field of $x^n-1$. By $γ$ we denote a primitive element of $\mathbb{F}_{q^k}$. Let $C$ be a cyclic code of length $n$ whose check polynomial contains two zeros $γ^d$ and $γ^{d+D}$, where $de \mid (q-1)$, $e>1$ and $D=(q^k-1)/e$. This family of cyclic codes is not projective. Many authors have studied the weight distribution of these codes for certain parameters. In this paper, we prove that these codes are never two-weight codes. This result would strengthen a conjecture by Vega which states that all two-weight cyclic codes are the "known" ones.

Necessary Conditions for the Existence of Group-Invariant Butson Matrices and a New Family of Perfect Arrays
Let $G$ be a finite abelian group and let $\exp(G)$ denote the least common multiple of the orders of all elements of $G$. A $BH(G,h)$ matrix is a $G$-invariant $|G|\times |G|$ matrix $H$ whose entries are complex $h$th roots of unity such that $HH^*=|G|I_{|G|}$. In this paper, we study the relation between $G$ and $h$ so that a $BH(G,h)$ matrix exists. We will only focus on $BH(\mathbb{Z}_n,h)$ matrices and $BH(G,2p^b)$ matrices, where $p$ is an odd prime. By our results, there are $2687$ open cases left for the existence of $BH(\mathbb{Z}_n,h)$ matrices in which $1\leq n,h \leq 100$. In the last section, we show that $BH(\mathbb{Z}_n,h)$ matrices can be used to construct a new family of perfect polyphase arrays.
