Properties of high rank subvarieties of affine spaces
We use tools of additive combinatorics for the study of subvarieties defined by {\it high rank} families of polynomials in high dimensional $\mathbb{F} _q$-vector spaces. In the first, analytic part of the paper we prove a number properties of high rank systems of polynomials. In the second, we use these properties to deduce results in Algebraic Geometry, such as an effective Stillman conjecture over algebraically closed fields, an analogue of Nullstellensatz for varieties over finite fields, and a strengthening of a recent result of [5]. We also show that for $k$-varieties $\mathbb X \subset \mathbb{A}^n$ of high rank any weakly polynomial function on a set $\mathbb{X}(k)\subset k^n$ extends to a polynomial.

Self-Polar Polytopes
Self-polar polytopes are convex polytopes that are equal to an orthogonal transformation of their polar sets. These polytopes were first studied by Lovász as a means of establishing the chromatic number of distance graphs on spheres, and they can also be used to construct triangle-free graphs with arbitrarily high chromatic number. We investigate the existence, construction, facial structure, and practical applications of self-polar polytopes, as well as the place of these polytopes within the broader set of self-dual polytopes.
A variant of ${\texttt{IdentityFinder}}$ and some new identities of Rogers-Ramanujan-MacMahon type
We report on findings of a variant of ${\texttt{IdentityFinder}}$ - a Maple program that was used by two of the authors to conjecture several new identities of Rogers-Ramanujan kind. In the present search, we modify the parametrization of the search space by taking into consideration several aspects of Lepowsky and Wilson's $Z$-algebraic mechanism and its variant by Meurman and Primc. We search for identities based on forbidding the appearance of "flat" partitions as sub-partitions. Several new identities of Rogers-Ramanujan-MacMahon type are found and proved.

Eternal domination on prisms of graphs
An eternal dominating set of a graph $G$ is a set of vertices (or "guards") which dominates $G$ and which can defend any infinite series of vertex attacks, where an attack is defended by moving one guard along an edge from its current position to the attacked vertex. The size of the smallest eternal dominating set is denoted $γ^\infty(G)$ and is called the eternal domination number of $G$. In this paper, we answer a conjecture of Klostermeyer and Mynhardt [Discussiones Mathematicae Graph Theory, vol. 35, pp. 283-300], showing that there exist there are infinitely many graphs $G$ such that $γ^\infty(G)=θ(G)$ and $γ^\infty(G \Box K_2)<θ(G \Box K_2)$, where $θ(G)$ denotes the clique cover number of $G$.

On monomial Golod ideals
We study ideal-theoretic conditions for a monomial ideal to be Golod. For ideals in a polynomial ring in three variables, our criteria give a complete characterization. Over such rings, we show that the product of two monomial ideals is Golod.

Cluster structures in Schubert varieties in the Grassmannian
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this article we explain how the coordinate ring of each (open) Schubert variety in the Grassmannian can be identified with a cluster algebra, whose combinatorial structure is encoded using (target labelings of) Postnikov's plabic graphs. This result generalizes a theorem of Scott (Scott 2006) for the Grassmannian, and proves a folklore conjecture for Schubert varieties that has been believed by experts since (Scott 2006), though the statement was not formally written down until Müller-Speyer explicitly conjectured it (Müller-Speyer 2016). To prove this conjecture we use a result of Leclerc (Leclerc 2016), who used the module category of the preprojective algebra to prove that coordinate rings of many Richardson varieties in the complete flag variety can be identified with cluster algebras. Our proof also uses a construction of Karpman (Karpman 2016) to build plabic graphs associated to reduced expressions. We additionally generalize our result to the setting of skew Schubert varieties; the latter result uses generalized plabic graphs, i.e. plabic graphs whose boundary vertices need not be labeled in cyclic order.
Planar digraphs for automatic complexity
We show that the digraph of a nondeterministic finite automaton witnessing the automatic complexity of a word can always be taken to be planar. In the case of total transition functions studied by Shallit and Wang, planarity can fail. Let $s_q(n)$ be the number of binary words $x$ of length $n$ having nondeterministic automatic complexity $A_N(x)=q$. We show that $s_q$ is eventually constant for each $q$ and that the eventual constant value of $s_q$ is computable.

The number of languages with maximum state complexity
Câmpeanu and Ho (2004) determined the maximum finite state complexity of finite languages, building on work of Champarnaud and Pin (1989). They stated that it is very difficult to determine the number of maximum-complexity languages. Here we give a formula for this number. We also generalize their work from languages to functions on finite sets.

Simultaneous current graph constructions for minimum triangulations and complete graph embeddings
The problems of the genus of the complete graphs and minimum triangulations for each surface were both solved using the theory of current graphs, and each of them divided into twelve different cases, depending on the residue modulo 12 of the number of vertices. Cases 8 and 11 were of particular difficulty for both problems, with multiple families of current graphs developed to solve these cases. We solve these cases in a unified manner with families of current graphs applicable to both problems. Additionally, we give new constructions to both problems for Cases 6 and 9, which greatly simplify previous constructions by Ringel, Youngs, Guy, and Jungerman. All these new constructions are index 3 current graphs sharing nearly all of the structure of the simple solution for Case 5 of the Map Color Theorem.
Maker-Breaker total domination game
Maker-Breaker total domination game in graphs is introduced as a natural counterpart to the Maker-Breaker domination game recently studied by Duchêne, Gledel, Parreau, and Renault. Both games are instances of the combinatorial Maker-Breaker games. The Maker-Breaker total domination game is played on a graph $G$ by two players who alternately take turns choosing vertices of $G$. The first player, Dominator, selects a vertex in order to totally dominate $G$ while the other player, Staller, forbids a vertex to Dominator in order to prevent him to reach his goal. It is shown that there are infinitely many connected cubic graphs in which Staller wins and that no minimum degree condition is sufficient to guarantee that Dominator wins when Staller starts the game. An amalgamation lemma is established and used to determine the outcome of the game played on grids. Cacti are also classified with respect to the outcome of the game. A connection between the game and hypergraphs is established. It is proved that the game is PSPACE-complete on split and bipartite graphs. Several problems and questions are also posed.
Comparability and Cocomparability Bigraphs
We propose bipartite analogues of comparability and cocomparability graphs. Surprizingly, the two classes coincide. We call these bipartite graphs cocomparability bigraphs. We characterize cocomparability bigraphs in terms of vertex orderings, forbidden substructures, and orientations of their complements. In particular, we prove that cocomparability bigraphs are precisely those bipartite graphs that do not have edge-asteroids; this is analogous to Gallai's structural characterization of cocomparability graphs by the absence of (vertex-) asteroids. Our characterizations imply a robust polynomial-time recognition algorithm for the class of cocomparability bigraphs. Finally, we also discuss a natural relation of cocomparability bigraphs to interval containment bigraphs, resembling a well-known relation of cocomparability graphs to interval graphs.

A lecture hall theorem for $m$-falling partitions
For an integer $m\ge 2$, a partition $λ=(λ_1,λ_2,\ldots)$ is called $m$-falling, a notion introduced by Keith, if the least nonnegative residues mod $m$ of $λ_i$'s form a nonincreasing sequence. We extend a bijection originally due to the third author to deduce a lecture hall theorem for such $m$-falling partitions. A special case of this result gives rise to a finite version of Pak-Postnikov's $(m,c)$-generalization of Euler's theorem. Our work is partially motivated by a recent extension of Euler's theorem for all moduli, due to Keith and Xiong. We note that their result actually can be refined with one more parameter.
Ramsey numbers of ordered graphs under graph operations
An ordered graph $\mathcal{G}$ is a simple graph together with a total ordering on its vertices. The (2-color) Ramsey number of $\mathcal{G}$ is the smallest integer $N$ such that every 2-coloring of the edges of the complete ordered graph on $N$ vertices has a monochromatic copy of $\mathcal{G}$ that respects the ordering. In this paper we investigate the effect of various graph operations on the Ramsey number of a given ordered graph, and detail a general framework for applying results on extremal functions of 0-1 matrices to ordered Ramsey problems. We apply this method to give upper bounds on the Ramsey number of ordered matchings arising from sum-decomposable permutations, an alternating ordering of the cycle, and an alternating ordering of the tight hyperpath. We also construct ordered matchings on $n$ vertices whose Ramsey number is $n^{q+o(1)}$ for any given exponent $q\in(1,2)$.
$p$-Jones-Wenzl idempotents
For a prime number $p$ and any natural number $n$ we introduce, by giving an explicit recursive formula, the $p$-Jones-Wenzl projector ${}^p\operatorname{JW}_n$, an element of the Temperley-Lieb algebra $TL_n(2)$ with coefficients in ${\mathbb F}_p$. We prove that these projectors give the indecomposable objects in the $\tilde{A}_1$-Hecke category over ${\mathbb F}_p$, or equivalently, they give the projector in $\mathrm{End}_{\mathrm{SL}_2(\overline{{\mathbb F}_p})}(({\mathbb F}_p^2)^{\otimes n})$ to the top tilting module. The way in which we find these projectors is by categorifying the fractal appearing in the expression of the $p$-canonical basis in terms of the Kazhdan-Lusztig basis for $\tilde{A}_1$.
The anti-Ramsey threshold of complete graphs
For graphs $G$ and $H$, let $G {\displaystyle\smash{\begin{subarray}{c} \hbox{$\tiny\rm rb$} \\ \longrightarrow \\ \hbox{$\tiny\rm p$} \end{subarray}}}H$ denote the property that for every proper edge-colouring of $G$ there is a rainbow $H$ in $G$. It is known that, for every graph $H$, an asymptotic upper bound for the threshold function $p^{\rm rb}_H=p^{\rm rb}_H(n)$ of this property for the random graph $G(n,p)$ is $n^{-1/m^{(2)}(H)}$, where $m^{(2)}(H)$ denotes the so-called maximum $2$-density of $H$. Extending a result of Nenadov, Person, Škorić, and Steger [J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 124 (2017),1-38] we prove a matching lower bound for $p^{\rm rb}_{K_k}$ for $k\geq 5$. Furthermore, we show that $p^{\rm rb}_{K_4} = n^{-7/15}$.

A counterexample to a strong variant of the Polynomial Freiman-Ruzsa conjecture
Let $p$ be a prime. One formulation of the Polynomial Freiman-Ruzsa conjecture over $\mathbb{F}_p$ can be stated as follows. If $φ: \mathbb{F}_p^n \rightarrow \mathbb{F}_p^N$ is a function such that $φ(x+y) - φ(x) - φ(y)$ takes values in some set $S$, then there is a linear map $\tildeφ : \mathbb{F}_p^n \rightarrow \mathbb{F}_p^N$ with the property that $φ- \tildeφ$ takes at most $|S|^{O(1)}$ values. A strong variant of this conjecture states that, in fact, there is a linear map $\tildeφ$ such that $φ- \tildeφ$ takes values in $tS$ for some constant $t$. In this note, we discuss a counterexample to this conjecture.

Moments of ranks and cranks, and Quotients of Eisenstein Series and the Dedekind Eta Function
Atkin and Garvan introduced the functions $N_k(n)$ and $M_k(n)$, which denote the $k$-th moments of ranks and cranks in the theory of partitions. Let $e_{2r}(n)$ be the $n$-th Fourier coefficient of $E_{2r}(τ)/η(τ)$, where $E_{2r}(τ)$ is the classical Eisenstein series of weight $2r$ and $η(τ)$ is the Dedekind eta function. Via the theory of quasi-modular forms, we find that for $k \leq 5$, $N_k(n)$ and $M_k(n)$ can be expressed using $e_{2r}(n)$ ($2\leq r \leq k$), $p(n)$ and $N_2(n)$. For $k>5$, additional functions are required for such expressions. For $r\in \{2, 3, 4, 5, 7\}$, by studying the action of Hecke operators on $E_{2r}(τ)/η(τ)$, we provide explicit congruences modulo arbitrary powers of primes for $e_{2r}(n)$. Moreover, for $\ell \in \{5, 7, 11, 13\}$ and any $k\geq 1$, we present uniform methods for finding nice representations for $\sum_{n=0}^\infty e_{2r}\left(\frac{\ell^{k}n+1}{24}\right)q^n$, which work for every $r\geq 2$. These representations allow us to prove congruences modulo powers of $\ell$, and we have done so for $e_4(n)$ and $e_6(n)$ as examples. Based on the congruences satisfied by $e_{2r}(n)$, we establish congruences modulo arbitrary powers of $\ell$ for the moments and symmetrized moments of ranks and cranks as well as higher order $\mathrm{spt}$-functions.

Cycles as edge intersection hypergraphs
If ${\cal H}=(V,{\cal E})$ is a hypergraph, its edge intersection hypergraph $EI({\cal H})=(V,{\cal E}^{EI})$ has the edge set ${\cal E}^{EI}=\{e_1 \cap e_2 \ |\ e_1, e_2 \in {\cal E} \ \wedge \ e_1 \neq e_2 \ \wedge \ |e_1 \cap e_2 |\geq2\}$. Picking up a problem from arXiv:1901.06292, for $n \ge 24$ we prove that there is a 3-regular (and - if $n$ is even - 6-uniform) hypergraph ${\cal H}=(V,{\cal E})$ with $\lceil \frac{n}{2} \rceil$ hyperedges and $EI({\cal H}) = C_n$.
