$d$-cluster-free sets with a given matching number
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics 82C (2019) 103000 • View Publication • BIB
Let $3\le d\le k$ and $ν\ge 0$ be fixed and $\mathcal{F}\subset\binom{[n]}{k}$. The matching number of $\mathcal{F}$, denoted by $ν(\mathcal{F})$, is the maximum number of pairwise disjoint sets in $\mathcal{F}$, and $\mathcal{F}$ is $d$-cluster-free if it does not contain $d$ sets with the union of size at most $2k$ and empty intersection. In this paper, we give a lower bound and an upper bound for the maximum size of a $d$-cluster-free family with a matching number at least $ν+1$. In particular, our result of the case $ν=1$ settles a conjecture of Mammoliti and Britz. We also introduce a Turán problem in hypergraphs that allows multiple edges, which may be of independent interest.

Gallai-Ramsey numbers for a class of graphs with five vertices
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given two graphs $G$ and $H$, the $k$-colored Gallai-Ramsey number $gr_k(G : H)$ is defined to be the minimum integer $n$ such that every $k$-coloring of the complete graph on $n$ vertices contains either a rainbow copy of $G$ or a monochromatic copy of $H$. In this paper, we consider $gr_k(K_3 : H)$ where $H$ is a connected graph with five vertices and at most six edges. There are in total thirteen graphs in this graph class, and the Gallai-Ramsey numbers for some of them have been studied step by step in several papers. We determine all the Gallai-Ramsey numbers for the remaining graphs, and we also obtain some related results for a class of unicyclic graphs.

Forbidden rainbow subgraphs that force large monochromatic or multicolored k-connected subgraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $n, k, m$ be positive integers with $n\gg m\gg k$, and let $\mathcal{A}$ be the set of graphs $G$ of order at least 3 such that there is a $k$-connected monochromatic subgraph of order at least $n-f(G,k,m)$ in any rainbow $G$-free coloring of $K_n$ using all the $m$ colors. In this paper, we prove that the set $\mathcal{A}$ consists of precisely $P_6$, $P_3\cup P_4$, $K_2\cup P_5$, $K_2\cup 2P_3$, $2K_2\cup K_3$, $2K_2\cup P^{+}_4$, $3K_2\cup K_{1,3}$ and their subgraphs of order at least 3. Moreover, we show that for any graph $H\in \mathcal{A}$, if $n$ sufficiently larger than $m$ and $k$, then any rainbow $(P_3\cup H)$-free coloring of $K_n$ using all the $m$ colors contains a $k$-connected monochromatic subgraph of order at least $cn$, where $c=c(H)$ is a constant, not depending on $n$, $m$ or $k$. Furthermore, we consider a parallel problem in complete bipartite graphs. Let $s, t, k, m$ be positive integers with ${\rm min}\left\{s, t\right\}\gg m\gg k$ and $m\geq |E(H)|$, and let $\mathcal{B}$ be the set of bipartite graphs $H$ of order at least 3 such that there is a $k$-connected monochromatic subgraph of order at least $s+t-f(H,k,m)$ in any rainbow $H$-free coloring of $K_{s,t}$ using all the $m$ colors, where $f(H,k,m)$ is not depending on $s$ or $t$. We prove that the set $\mathcal{B}$ consists of precisely $2P_3$, $2K_2\cup K_{1,3}$ and their subgraphs of order at least 3. Finally, we consider the large $k$-connected multicolored subgraph instead of monochromatic subgraph. We show that for $1\leq k \leq 3$ and $n$ sufficiently large, every Gallai-3-coloring of $K_n$ contains a $k$-connected subgraph of order at least $n-\left\lfloor\frac{k-1}{2}\right\rfloor$ using at most two colors. We also show that the above statement is false for $k=4t$, where $t$ is an positive integer.
A study of cops and robbers in oriented graphs
We consider the well-studied cops and robbers game in the context of oriented graphs, which has received surprisingly little attention to date. We examine the relationship between the cop numbers of an oriented graph and its underlying undirected graph, giving a surprising result that there exists at least one graph $G$ for which every strongly connected orientation of $G$ has cop number strictly less than that of $G$. We also refute a conjecture on the structure of cop-win digraphs, study orientations of outerplanar graphs, and study the cop number of line digraphs. Finally, we consider some the aspects of optimal play, in particular the capture time of cop-win digraphs and properties of the relative positions of the cop(s) and robber.

Intersecting Families of Perfect Matchings
A family of perfect matchings of $K_{2n}$ is $t$-$intersecting$ if any two members share $t$ or more edges. We prove for any $t \in \mathbb{N}$ that every $t$-intersecting family of perfect matchings has size no greater than $(2(n-t) - 1)!!$ for sufficiently large $n$, and that equality holds if and only if the family is composed of all perfect matchings that contain a fixed set of $t$ disjoint edges. This is an asymptotic version of a conjecture of Godsil and Meagher that can be seen as the non-bipartite analogue of the Deza-Frankl conjecture proven by Ellis, Friedgut, and Pilpel.

Monochromatic Schur triples in randomly perturbed dense sets of integers
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a dense subset $A$ of the first $n$ positive integers, we provide a short proof showing that for $p=ω(n^{-2/3})$ the so-called {\sl randomly perturbed} set $A \cup [n]_p$ a.a.s. has the property that any $2$-colouring of it has a monochromatic Schur triple, i.e.\ a triple of the form $(a,b,a+b)$. This result is optimal since there are dense sets $A$, for which $A\cup [n]_p$ does not possess this property for $p=o(n^{-2/3})$.

A q-analogue and a symmetric function analogue of a result by Carlitz, Scoville and Vaughan
We derive an equation that is analogous to a well-known symmetric function identity: $\sum_{i=0}^n(-1)^ie_ih_{n-i}=0$. Here the elementary symmetric function $e_i$ is the Frobenius characteristic of the representation of $\mathcal{S}_i$ on the top homology of the subset lattice $B_i$, whereas our identity involves the representation of $\mathcal{S}_n\times \mathcal{S}_n$ on the Segre product of $B_n$ with itself. We then obtain a q-analogue of a polynomial identity given by Carlitz, Scoville and Vaughan through examining the Segre product of the subspace lattice $B_n(q)$ with itself. We recognize the connection between the Euler characteristic of the Segre product of $B_n(q)$ with itself and the representation on the Segre product of $B_n$ with itself by recovering our polynomial identity from specializing the identity on the representation of $\mathcal{S}_i\times \mathcal{S}_i$.

Exotic Steiner Chains in Miquelian Möbius Planes
In the Euclidean plane, two intersecting circles or two circles which are tangent to each other clearly do not carry a finite Steiner chain. However, in this paper we will show that such exotic Steiner chains exist in finite Miquelian Möbius planes of odd order. We state and prove explicit conditions in terms of the order of the plane and the capacitance of the two carrier circles $C_1$ and $C_2$ for the existence, length, and number of Steiner chains carried by $C_1$ and $C_2$.

On Graphs with equal Dominating and C-dominating energy
Published • View Publication • BIB
Graph energy and Domination in graphs are most studied areas of graph theory. In this paper we made an attempt to connect these two areas of graph theory by introducing c-dominating energy of a graph $G$. First, we show the chemical applications of c-dominating energy with the help of well known statistical tools. Next, we obtain mathematical properties of c-dominating energy. Finally, we characterize trees, unicyclic graphs, cubic and block graphs with equal dominating and c-dominating energy.
On Infinite Prefix Normal Words
Published • View Publication • BIB
Prefix normal words are binary words that have no factor with more $1$s than the prefix of the same length. Finite prefix normal words were introduced in [Fici and Lipták, DLT 2011]. In this paper, we study infinite prefix normal words and explore their relationship to some known classes of infinite binary words. In particular, we establish a connection between prefix normal words and Sturmian words, between prefix normal words and abelian complexity, and between prefix normality and lexicographic order.

Semi-perfect 1-Factorizations of the Hypercube
Published • View Publication • BIB
A 1-factorization $\mathcal{M} = \{M_1,M_2,\ldots,M_n\}$ of a graph $G$ is called perfect if the union of any pair of 1-factors $M_i, M_j$ with $i \ne j$ is a Hamilton cycle. It is called $k$-semi-perfect if the union of any pair of 1-factors $M_i, M_j$ with $1 \le i \le k$ and $k+1 \le j \le n$ is a Hamilton cycle. We consider 1-factorizations of the discrete cube $Q_d$. There is no perfect 1-factorization of $Q_d$, but it was previously shown that there is a 1-semi-perfect 1-factorization of $Q_d$ for all $d$. Our main result is to prove that there is a $k$-semi-perfect 1-factorization of $Q_d$ for all $k$ and all $d$, except for one possible exception when $k=3$ and $d=6$. This is, in some sense, best possible. We conclude with some questions concerning other generalisations of perfect 1-factorizations.

Leaf-induced subtrees of leaf-Fibonacci trees
In analogy to a concept of Fibonacci trees, we define the leaf-Fibonacci tree of size $n$ and investigate its number of nonisomorphic leaf-induced subtrees. Denote by $f_0$ the one vertex tree and $f_1$ the tree that consists of a root with two leaves attached to it; the leaf-Fibonacci tree $f_n$ of size $n\geq 2$ is the binary tree whose branches are $f_{n-1}$ and $f_{n-2}$. We derive a nonlinear difference equation for the number $\text{N}(f_n)$ of nonisomorphic leaf-induced subtrees (subtrees induced by leaves) of $f_n$, and also prove that $\text{N}(f_n)$ is asymptotic to $1.00001887227319\ldots (1.48369689570172 \ldots)^{φ^n}$ ($φ=$~golden ratio) as $n$ grows to infinity.

Chordal circulant graphs and induced matching number

Let $G=C_{n}(S)$ be a circulant graph on $n$ vertices. In this paper we characterize chordal circulant graphs and then we compute $ν(G)$, the induced matching number of $G$. These latter are useful in bounding the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the edge ring of $G$.

Characterising $k$-connected sets in infinite graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A $k$-connected set in an infinite graph, where $k > 0$ is an integer, is a set of vertices such that any two of its subsets of the same size $\ell \leq k$ can be connected by $\ell$ disjoint paths in the whole graph. We characterise the existence of $k$-connected sets of arbitrary but fixed infinite cardinality via the existence of certain minors and topological minors. We also prove a duality theorem for the existence of such $k$-connected sets: if a graph contains no such $k$-connected set, then it has a tree-decomposition which, whenever it exists, precludes the existence of such a $k$-connected set.

The q-Hahn PushTASEP
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce the $q$-Hahn PushTASEP --- an integrable stochastic interacting particle system which is a 3-parameter generalization of the PushTASEP, a well-known close relative of the TASEP (Totally Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process). The transition probabilities in the $q$-Hahn PushTASEP are expressed through the $_4φ_3$ basic hypergeometric function. Under suitable limits, the $q$-Hahn PushTASEP degenerates to all known integrable (1+1)-dimensional stochastic systems with a pushing mechanism. One can thus view our new system as a pushing counterpart of the $q$-Hahn TASEP introduced by Povolotsky (2013). We establish Markov duality relations and contour integral formulas for the $q$-Hahn PushTASEP. In a $q\to 1$ limit of our process we arrive at a random recursion which, in a special case, appears to be similar to the inverse-Beta polymer model. However, unlike in recursions for Beta polymer models, the weights (i.e., the coefficients of the recursion) in our model depend on the previous values of the partition function in a nontrivial manner.

A Note On Universal Point Sets for Planar Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We investigate which planar point sets allow simultaneous straight-line embeddings of all planar graphs on a fixed number of vertices. We first show that $(1.293-o(1))n$ points are required to find a straight-line drawing of each $n$-vertex planar graph (vertices are drawn as the given points); this improves the previous best constant $1.235$ by Kurowski (2004). Our second main result is based on exhaustive computer search: We show that no set of 11 points exists, on which all planar 11-vertex graphs can be simultaneously drawn plane straight-line. This strengthens the result by Cardinal, Hoffmann, and Kusters (2015), that all planar graphs on $n \le 10$ vertices can be simultaneously drawn on particular `universal' sets of $n$ points while there are no universal sets for $n \ge 15$. Moreover, we provide a set of 49 planar 11-vertex graphs which cannot be simultaneously drawn on any set of 11 points. This, in fact, is another step towards a (negative) answer of the question, whether every two planar graphs can be drawn simultaneously -- a question raised by Brass, Cenek, Duncan, Efrat, Erten, Ismailescu, Kobourov, Lubiw, and Mitchell (2007).

On enumerating factorizations in reflection groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
We describe an approach, via Malle's permutation $Ψ$ on the set of irreducible characters $\text{Irr}(W)$, that gives a uniform derivation of the Chapuy-Stump formula for the enumeration of reflection factorizations of the Coxeter element. It also recovers its weighted generalization by delMas, Reiner, and Hameister, and further produces structural results for factorization formulas of arbitrary regular elements.
Boundary Braids
Published in Algebr. Geom. Topol. 20 (2020) 3505-3560 • View Publication • BIB
The n-strand braid group can be defined as the fundamental group of the configuration space of n unlabeled points in a closed disk based at a configuration where all n points lie in the boundary of the disk. Using this definition, the subset of braids that have a representative where a specified subset of these points remain pointwise fixed forms a subgroup isomorphic to a braid group with fewer strands. In this article, we generalize this phenomenon by introducing the notion of boundary braids. A boundary braid is a braid that has a representative where some specified subset of the points remains in the boundary cycle of the disk. Although boundary braids merely form a subgroupoid rather than a subgroup, they play an interesting geometric role in the piecewise Euclidean dual braid complex defined by Tom Brady and the second author. We prove several theorems in this setting, including the fact that the subcomplex of the dual braid complex determined by a specified set of boundary braids metrically splits as the direct metric product of a Euclidean polyhedron and a dual braid complex of smaller rank.
