Few $T$ copies in $H$-saturated graphs

A graph is $F$-saturated if it is $F$-free but the addition of any edge creates a copy of $F$. In this paper we study the quantity $\mathrm{sat}(n, H, F)$ which denotes the minimum number of copies of $H$ that an $F$-saturated graph on $n$ vertices may contain. This parameter is a natural saturation analogue of Alon and Shikhelman's generalized Turán problem, and letting $H = K_2$ recovers the well-studied saturation function. We provide a first investigation into this general function focusing on the cases where the host graph is either $K_s$ or $C_k$-saturated. Some representative interesting behavior is:
(a) For any natural number $m$, there are graphs $H$ and $F$ such that $\mathrm{sat}(n, H, F) = Θ(n^m)$.
(b) For many pairs $k$ and $l$, we show $\mathrm{sat}(n, C_l, C_k) = 0$. In particular, we prove that there exists a triangle-free $C_k$-saturated graph on $n$ vertices for any $k > 4$ and large enough $n$.
(c) $\mathrm{sat}(n, K_3, K_4) = n-2$, $\mathrm{sat}(n, C_4, K_4) \sim \frac{n^2}{2}$, and $\mathrm{sat}(n, C_6, K_5) \sim n^3$.
We discuss several intriguing problems which remain unsolved.

We prove that the vanishings of the modified diagonal cycles of Gross and Schoen govern the $\mathbb{Z}$-linear relations between small $m$-diagonals $\text{pt}^{\{1,\ldots,n\}\setminus A}\timesΔ_A$ in the rational Chow ring of $X^n$ for $A$ ranging over $m$-element subsets of $\{1,\ldots,n\}$. Our results generalize to arbitrary symmetric classes in place of the diagonal in $X^m$, and with different types of inclusions $A^\bullet(X^m)_{\mathbb{Q}}^{S_m} \hookrightarrow A^\bullet(X^n)_{\mathbb{Q}}$.
The combinatorial heart of this paper, which may be of independent interest, is showing the $\mathbb{Z}$-linear relations between elementary symmetric polynomials $e_k(x_{a_1},\ldots,x_{a_m}) \in \mathbb{Z}[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$ are generated by the $S_n$-translates of a certain alternating sum over the facets of a hyperoctahedron.

A subset $A \subset \mathbb R^2$ is said to avoid distance $1$ if: $\forall x,y \in A, \left\| x-y \right\|_2 \neq 1.$ In this paper we study the number $m_1(\mathbb R^2)$ which is the supremum of the upper densities of measurable sets avoiding distance 1 in the Euclidean plane. Intuitively, $m_1(\mathbb R^2)$ represents the highest proportion of the plane that can be filled by a set avoiding distance 1. This parameter is related to the fractional chromatic number $χ_f(\mathbb R^2)$ of the plane.
We establish that $m_1(\mathbb R^2) \leq 0.25647$ and $χ_f(\mathbb R^2) \geq 3.8991$.

For a half-translation surface (S,q), the associated saddle connection complex A(S,q) is the simplicial complex where vertices are the saddle connections on (S,q), with simplices spanned by sets of pairwise disjoint saddle connections. This complex can be naturally regarded as an induced subcomplex of the arc complex. We prove that any simplicial isomorphism $φ: A(S,q) \to A(S',q')$ between saddle connection complexes is induced by an affine diffeomorphism $F : (S,q) \to (S',q')$. In particular, this shows that the saddle connection complex is a complete invariant of affine equivalence classes of half-translation surfaces. Throughout our proof, we develop several combinatorial criteria of independent interest for detecting various geometric objects on a half-translation surface.
Hives Determined by Pairs in the Affine Grassmannian over Discrete Valuation Rings
Let ${\mathcal O}$ be a discrete valuation ring with quotient field ${\cal K}$. The affine Grassmannian ${\cal G}r$ is the set of full-rank ${\mathcal O}$-modules contained in ${\cal K}^n$. Given $Λ\in {\cal G}r$, invariant factors $inv(Λ)=λ\in {\mathbb Z}^n$ stratify ${\cal G}r$. Left-multiplication by $GL_{n}({\cal K})$ stratifies ${\cal G}r \times {\cal G}r$ where $inv(N,Λ) = μ$ if $(N,Λ)$ and $(I_{n} ,M)$ are in the same $GL_{n}({\cal K})$ orbit, and $inv(M) = μ$. We present an elementary map from ${\cal G}r \times {\cal G}r$ to hives (in the sense of Knutson and Tao) of type $(μ,ν,λ)$ where $inv(N,Λ) = μ$, $inv(N) = ν$, and $inv(Λ) = λ$. Earlier work by the authors determined Littlewood-Richardson fillings from matrix pairs over certain rings ${\mathcal O}$, and later Kamnitzer utilized properties of MV polytopes to define a map from ${\cal G}r\times {\cal G}r$ to hives over ${\mathcal O} = {\mathbb C}[[t]]$. Our proof uses only linear algebra methods over any discrete valuation ring, where hive entries are minima of sums of orders of invariant factors over certain submodules. Our map is analogous to a conjectured construction of hives from Hermitian matrix pairs due to Danilov and Koshevoy.
Ballot Permutations and Odd Order Permutations

A permutation $π$ is ballot if, for all $k$, the word $π_1\cdots π_k$ has at least as many ascents as it has descents. Let $b(n)$ denote the number of ballot permutations of order $n$, and let $p(n)$ denote the number of permutations which have odd order in the symmetric group $S_n$. Callan conjectured that $b(n)=p(n)$ for all $n$, which was proved by Bernardi, Duplantier, and Nadeau.
We propose a refinement of Callan's original conjecture. Let $b(n,d)$ denote the number of ballot permutations with $d$ descents. Let $p(n,d)$ denote the number of odd order permutations with $M(π)=d$, where $M(π)$ is a certain statistic related to the cyclic descents of $π$. We conjecture that $b(n,d)=p(n,d)$ for all $n$ and $d$. We prove this stronger conjecture for the cases $d=1,\ 2,\ 3$, and $d=\lfloor(n-1)/2\rfloor$, and in each of these cases we establish formulas for $b(n,d)$ involving Eulerian numbers and Eulerian-Catalan numbers.

The \emph{critical} group of a finite connected graph is an abelian group defined by the Smith normal form of its Laplacian. Let $q$ be a power of a prime and $H$ be a multiplicative subgroup of $K=\mathbb{F}_{q}$. By $\mathrm{Cay}(K,H)$ we denote the Cayley graph on the additive group of $K$ with `connection' set $H$. A strongly regular graph of the form $\mathrm{Cay}(K,H)$ is called a \emph{cyclotomic strongly regular graph}. Let $p$ and $\ell >2$ be primes such that $p$ is primitive $\pmod{\ell}$. We compute the \emph{critical} groups of a family of \emph{cyclotomic strongly regular graphs} for which $q=p^{(\ell-1)t}$ (with $t\in \mathbb{N}$) and $H$ is the unique multiplicative subgroup of order $k=\frac{q-1}{\ell}$. These graphs were first discovered by van Lint and Schrijver in \cite{VS}.
Power domination throttling

A power dominating set of a graph $G=(V,E)$ is a set $S\subset V$ that colors every vertex of $G$ according to the following rules: in the first timestep, every vertex in $N[S]$ becomes colored; in each subsequent timestep, every vertex which is the only non-colored neighbor of some colored vertex becomes colored. The power domination throttling number of $G$ is the minimum sum of the size of a power dominating set $S$ and the number of timesteps it takes $S$ to color the graph. In this paper, we determine the complexity of power domination throttling and give some tools for computing and bounding the power domination throttling number. Some of our results apply to very general variants of throttling and to other aspects of power domination.

The aim of this paper is twofold: First we classify all abstract light dual multinets of order $6$ which have a unique line of length at least two. Then we classify the weak projective embeddings of these objects in projective planes over fields of characteristic zero. For the latter we present a computational algebraic method for the study of weak projective embeddings of finite point-line incidence structures.
A central limit theorem for almost local additive tree functionals

An additive functional of a rooted tree is a functional that can be calculated recursively as the sum of the values of the functional over the branches, plus a certain toll function. Janson recently proved a central limit theorem for additive functionals of conditioned Galton-Watson trees under the assumption that the toll function is local, i.e. only depends on a fixed neighbourhood of the root. We extend his result to functionals that are "almost local" in a certain sense, thus covering a wider range of functionals. The notion of almost local functional intuitively means that the toll function can be approximated well by considering only a neighbourhood of the root. Our main result is illustrated by several explicit examples including natural graph theoretic parameters such as the number of independent sets, the number of matchings, and the number of dominating sets. We also cover a functional stemming from a tree reduction process that was studied by Hackl, Heuberger, Kropf, and Prodinger.

We present an expository overview of the monoidal structures in the category of linearly compact vector spaces. Bimonoids in this category are the natural duals of infinite-dimensional bialgebras. We classify the relations on words whose equivalence classes generate linearly compact bialgebras under shifted shuffling and deconcatenation. We also extend some of the theory of combinatorial Hopf algebras to bialgebras that are not connected or of finite graded dimension. Finally, we discuss several examples of quasi-symmetric functions, not necessarily of bounded degree, that may be constructed via terminal properties of combinatorial bialgebras.

We introduce the concept of monomial ideals with stable projective dimension, as a generalization of the Cohen-Macaulay property. Indeed, we study the class of monomial ideals $I$, whose projective dimension is stable under monomial localizations at monomial prime ideals $\fp$, with $\height \fp\geq \pd S/I$. We study the relations between this property and other sorts of Cohen-Macaulayness. Finally, we characterize some classes of polymatroidal ideals with stable projective dimension.

We introduce a graph structure on Euclidean polytopes. The vertices of this graph are the $d$-dimensional polytopes contained in $\mathbb{R}^d$ and its edges connect any two polytopes that can be obtained from one another by either inserting or deleting a vertex, while keeping their vertex sets otherwise unaffected. We prove several results on the connectivity of this graph, and on a number of its subgraphs. We are especially interested in several families of subgraphs induced by lattice polytopes, such as the subgraphs induced by the lattice polytopes with $n$ or $n+1$ vertices, that turn out to exhibit intriguing properties.

Changing and unchanging 2-rainbow independent domination

For a function $f : V(G ) \rightarrow \{0, 1, 2\}$ we denote by $V_i$ the set of vertices to which the value $i$ is assigned by $f$, i.e. $V_i = \{ x \in V (G ) : f(x ) = i \}$. If a function $f: V(G) \rightarrow \{0,1,2\}$ satisfying the condition that $V_i$ is independent for $i \in \{1,2\}$ and every vertex $u$ for which $f(u) = 0$ is adjacent to at least one vertex $v$ for which $f(v) = i$ for each $i \in \{1,2\}$, then $f$ is called a 2-rainbow independent dominating function (2RiDF). The weight $w(f)$ of a 2RiDF $f$ is the value $w(f) = |V_1|+|V_2|$. The minimum weight of a 2RiDF on a graph $G$ is called the \emph{2-rainbow independent domination number} of $G$. A graph $G$ is 2-rainbow independent domination stable if the 2-rainbow independent domination number of $G$ remains unchanged under removal of any vertex. In this paper, we characterize 2-rainbow independent domination stable trees and we study the effect of edge removal on 2-rainbow independent domination number in trees.
A Note on Congruences of Infinite Bounded Involution Lattices

We prove that an infinite (bounded) involution lattice and even pseudo--Kleene algebra can have any number of congruences between $2$ and its number of elements or equalling its number of subsets, regardless of whether it has as many ideals as elements or as many ideals as subsets; consequently, the same holds for antiortholattices. Under the Generalized Continuum Hypothesis, this means that an infinite (bounded) involution lattice, pseudo--Kleene algebra or antiortholattice can have any number of congruences between $2$ and its number of subsets, regardless of its number of ideals.

Let $P(n)$ be the probability that two independent, uniformly random permutations of $[n]$ have the same order, and let $K(n)$ be the probability that they are in the same conjugacy class. Answering a question of Thibault Godin, we prove that $ P(n)=n^{-2+o(1)}$ and that $\lim\sup \frac{ P(n) }{ K(n) }=\infty.$
Low analytic rank implies low partition rank for tensors
A tensor defined over a finite field $\mathbb{F}$ has low analytic rank if the distribution of its values differs significantly from the uniform distribution. An order $d$ tensor has partition rank 1 if it can be written as a product of two tensors of order less than $d$, and it has partition rank at most $k$ if it can be written as a sum of $k$ tensors of partition rank 1. In this paper, we prove that if the analytic rank of an order $d$ tensor is at most $r$, then its partition rank is at most $f(r,d,|\mathbb{F}|)$. Previously, this was known with $f$ being an Ackermann-type function in $r$ and $d$ but not depending on $\mathbb{F}$. The novelty of our result is that $f$ has only tower-type dependence on its parameters. It follows from our results that a biased polynomial has low rank; there too we obtain a tower-type dependence improving the previously known Ackermann-type bound.
Subsets of Cayley graphs that induce many edges
Let $G$ be a regular graph of degree $d$ and let $A\subset V(G)$. Say that $A$ is $η$-closed if the average degree of the subgraph induced by $A$ is at least $ηd$. This says that if we choose a random vertex $x\in A$ and a random neighbour $y$ of $x$, then the probability that $y\in A$ is at least $η$. The work of this paper was motivated by an attempt to obtain a qualitative description of closed subsets of the Cayley graph $Γ$ whose vertex set is $\mathbb F_2^{n_1}\otimes \dots \otimes \mathbb F_2^{n_d}$ with two vertices joined by an edge if their difference is of the form $u_1\otimes \cdots \otimes u_d$. For the matrix case (that is, when $d=2$), such a description was obtained by Khot, Minzer and Safra, a breakthrough that completed the proof of the 2-to-2 conjecture. In this paper, we formulate a conjecture for higher dimensions, and prove it in an important special case. Also, we identify a statement about $η$-closed sets in Cayley graphs on arbitrary finite Abelian groups that implies the conjecture and can be considered as a "highly asymmetric Balog-Szemerédi-Gowers theorem" when it holds. We conclude the paper by showing that this statement is not true for an arbitrary Cayley graph. It remains to decide whether the statement can be proved for the Cayley graph $Γ$.
