On the independent domination polynomial of a graph
Published • View Publication • BIB
An independent dominating set of the simple graph $G=(V,E)$ is a vertex subset that is both dominating and independent in $G$. The independent domination polynomial of a graph $G$ is the polynomial $D_i(G,x)=\sum_{A} x^{|A|}$, summed over all independent dominating subsets $A\subseteq V$. A root of $D_i(G,x)$ is called an independence domination root. We investigate the independent domination polynomials of some generalized compound graphs. As consequences, we construct graphs whose independence domination roots are real. Also, we consider some certain graphs and study the number of their independent dominating sets.
Minimalist designs

The iterative absorption method has recently led to major progress in the area of (hyper-)graph decompositions. Amongst other results, a new proof of the Existence conjecture for combinatorial designs, and some generalizations, was obtained. Here, we illustrate the method by investigating triangle decompositions: we give a simple proof that a triangle-divisible graph of large minimum degree has a triangle decomposition and prove a similar result for quasi-random host graphs.

Regularity and h-polynomials of binomial edge ideals
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a finite simple graph on the vertex set $[n] = \{ 1, \ldots, n \}$ and $K[X, Y] = K[x_1, \ldots, x_n, y_1, \ldots, y_n]$ the polynomial ring in $2n$ variables over a field $K$ with each $\mathrm{deg} x_i = \mathrm{deg} y_j = 1$. The binomial edge ideal of $G$ is the binomial ideal $J_G \subset K[X, Y]$ which is generated by those binomials $x_iy_j - x_jy_i$ for which $\{i, j\}$ is an edge of $G$. The Hilbert series $H_{K[X, Y]/J_G}(λ)$ of $K[X, Y]/J_G$ is of the form $H_{K[X, Y]/J_G}(λ) = h_{K[X, Y]/J_G}(λ)/(1 - λ)^d$, where $d = \mathrm{dim} K[X, Y]/J_G$ and where $h_{K[X, Y]/J_G}(λ) = h_0 + h_1λ+ h_2λ^2 + \cdots + h_sλ^s$ with each $h_i \in \mathbb{Z}$ and with $h_s \neq 0$ is the $h$-polynomial of $K[X, Y]/J_G$. It is known that, when $K[X, Y]/J_G$ is Cohen-Macaulay, one has $\mathrm{reg}(K[X, Y]/J_G) = \mathrm{deg} h_{K[X, Y]/J_G}(λ)$, where $ \mathrm{reg}(K[X, Y]/J_G)$ is the (Castelnuovo-Mumford) regularity of $K[X, Y]/J_G$. In the present paper, given arbitrary integers $r$ and $s$ with $2 \leq r \leq s$, a finite simple graph $G$ for which $\mathrm{reg}(K[X, Y]/J_G) = r$ and $\mathrm{deg} h_{K[X, Y]/J_G}(λ) = s$ will be constructed.

The full Schwinger-Dyson tower for random tensor models
Published in PoS CORFU2017 (2018) 147 • View Publication • BIB
We treat random rank-$D$ tensor models as $D$-dimensional quantum field theories---tensor field theories (TFT)---and review some of their non-perturbative methods. We classify the correlation functions of complex tensor field theories by boundary graphs, sketch the derivation of the Ward-Takahashi identity and stress its relevance in the derivation of the tower of exact, analytic Schwinger-Dyson equations for all the correlation functions (with connected boundary) of TFTs with quartic pillow-like interactions.

On the uniqueness of the maximum parsimony tree for data with up to two substitutions: an extension of the classic Buneman theorem in phylogenetics
Published • View Publication • BIB
One of the main aims of phylogenetics is the reconstruction of the correct evolutionary tree when data concerning the underlying species set are given. These data typically come in the form of DNA, RNA or protein alignments, which consist of various characters (also often referred to as sites). Often, however, tree reconstruction methods based on criteria like maximum parsimony may fail to provide a unique tree for a given dataset, or, even worse, reconstruct the `wrong' tree (i.e. a tree that differs from the one that generated the data). On the other hand it has long been known that if the alignment consists of all the characters that correspond to edges of a particular tree, i.e. they all require exactly $k=1$ substitution to be realized on that tree, then this tree will be recovered by maximum parsimony methods. This is based on Buneman's theorem in mathematical phylogenetics. It is the goal of the present manuscript to extend this classic result as follows: We prove that if an alignment consists of all characters that require exactly $k=2$ substitutions on a particular tree, this tree will always be the unique maximum parsimony tree (and we also show that this can be generalized to characters which require at most $k=2$ substitutions). In particular, this also proves a conjecture based on a recently published observation by Goloboff et al. affirmatively for the special case of $k=2$.

The Planar Modular Partition Monoid
The primary contribution of this thesis is to introduce and examine the planar modular partition monoid for parameters $m, k \in \mathbb{Z}_{>0}$, which has simultaneously and independently generated interest from other researchers as outlined within. Our collective understanding of related monoids, in particular the Jones, Brauer and partition monoids, along with the algebras they generate, has heavily influenced the direction of research by a significant number of mathematicians and physicists. Examples include Schur-Weyl type dualities in representation theory along with Potts, ice-type and Andrew-Baxter-Forrester models from statistical mechanics, giving strong motivation for the planar modular partition monoid to be examined. The original results contained within this thesis relating to the planar modular partition monoid are: the establishment of generators; recurrence relations for the cardinality of the monoid; recurrence relations for the cardinality of Green's $\mathcal{R}$, $\mathcal{L}$ and $\mathcal{D}$ relations; and a conjecture on relations that appear to present the planar modular partition monoid when $m=2$. For diagram semigroups that are closed under vertical reflections, characterisations of Green's $\mathcal{R}$, $\mathcal{L}$ and $\mathcal{H}$ relations have previously been established using the upper and lower patterns of bipartitions. We give a characterisation of Green's $\mathcal{D}$ relation with a similar flavour for diagram semigroups that are closed under vertical reflections. $<paragraph\ missing\ due\ to\ arXiv\ character\ limit\ on\ abstracts\ -\ see\ thesis\ file>$ A further contribution of this thesis is a reasonably comprehensive exposition of the fundamentals of diagram semigroups, which have traditionally been approached from the representation theory side and have since blossomed into a thriving area of research in their own right.

Seymour's Second Neighborhood Conjecture for Subsets of Vertices
Seymour conjectured that every oriented simple graph contains a vertex whose second neighborhood is at least as large as its first. In this note, we put forward a conjecture that we prove is actually equivalent: every oriented simple graph contains a subset of vertices $S$ whose second neighborhood is at least as large as its first. This subset perspective gives some insight into the original conjecture. For example, if there is a counterexample to the second neighborhood conjecture with minimum degree $δ$, then there exists a counterexample on at most ${δ+ 1 \choose 2}$ vertices. Given a vertex $v$, let $d_1^+(v)$ and $d_2^+(v)$ be the size of its first and second neighborhoods respectively. A digraph is $m$-free if there is no directed cycle on $m$ or fewer vertices. Let $λ_m$ be the largest value such that every $m$-free graph contains a vertex $v$ with $d_2^+(v) \geq λ_m d_1^+(v)$. The second neighborhood conjecture implies $λ_m = 1$ for all $m \geq 2$. Liang and Xu provided lower bounds for all $λ_m$, and showed that $λ_m \to 1$ as $m \to \infty$. We improve on Liang and Xu's bound for $m \geq 3$ using this subset perspective.

Reed-Solomon codes over small fields with constrained generator matrices
Published • View Publication • BIB
We give constructions of some special cases of $[n,k]$ Reed-Solomon codes over finite fields of size at least $n$ and $n+1$ whose generator matrices have constrained support. Furthermore, we consider a generalisation of the GM-MDS conjecture proposed by Lovett in 2018. We show that Lovett's conjecture is false in general and we specify when the conjecture is true.

Binomial coefficients and multifactorial numbers through generative grammars
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, the formal derivative operator defined with respect to context-free grammars is used to prove some properties about binomial coefficients and multifactorial numbers. In addition, we extend the formal derivative operator to matrix grammars and show that multifactorial numbers can also be generated.
Spectrum of free-form Sudoku graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A free-form Sudoku puzzle is a square arrangement of m times m cells such that the cells are partitioned into m subsets (called blocks) of equal cardinality. The goal of the puzzle is to place integers 1,...,m in the cells such that the numbers in every row, column and block are distinct. Represent each cell by a vertex and add edges between two vertices exactly when the corresponding cells, according to the rules, must contain different numbers. This yields the associated free-form Sudoku graph. This article studies the eigenvalues of free-form Sudoku graphs, most notably integrality. Further, we analyze the evolution of eigenvalues and eigenspaces of such graphs when the associated puzzle is subjected to a "blow up" operation, scaling the cell grid including its block partition.

The asymmetric traveling salesman path LP has constant integrality ratio
We show that the classical LP relaxation of the asymmetric traveling salesman path problem (ATSPP) has constant integrality ratio. If $ρ_{\text{ATSP}}$ and $ρ_{\text{ATSPP}}$ denote the integrality ratios for the asymmetric TSP and its path version, then $ρ_{\text{ATSPP}}\le 4ρ_{\text{ATSP}}-3$. We prove an even better bound for node-weighted instances: if the integrality ratio for ATSP on node-weighted instances is $ρ_{\text{ATSP}}^{\text{NW}}$, then the integrality ratio for ATSPP on node-weighted instances is at most $2ρ_{\text{ATSP}}^{\text NW}-1$. Moreover, we show that for ATSP node-weighted instances and unweighted digraph instances are almost equivalent. From this we deduce a lower bound of 2 on the integrality ratio of unweighted digraph instances.

On generalized Erdős-Ginzburg-Ziv constants for $\mathbb{Z}_2^d$
Published in J. Combin. Theory, ser. A, vol. 174, 2020, article 105254 • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a finite abelian group, and $r$ be a multiple of its exponent. The generalized Erdős-Ginzburg-Ziv constant $s_r(G)$ is the smallest integer $s$ such that every sequence of length $s$ over $G$ has a zero-sum subsequence of length $r$. We find exact values of $s_{2m}(\mathbb{Z}_2^d)$ for $d \leq 2m+1$. Connections to linear binary codes of maximal length and codes without a forbidden weight are discussed.

Splitter Theorems for Graph Immersions
Published • View Publication • BIB
We establish splitter theorems for graph immersions for two families of graphs, $k$-edge-connected graphs, with $k$ even, and 3-edge-connected, internally 4-edge-connected graphs. As a corollary, we prove that every $3$-edge-connected, internally $4$-edge-connected graph on at least seven vertices that immerses $K_5$ also has $K_{3,3}$ as an immersion.

Designs over finite fields by difference methods
Published in Finite Fields and Their Applications, Volume 57, May 2019, Pages 128-138 • View Publication • BIB
One of the very first results about designs over finite fields, by S. Thomas, is the existence of a cyclic 2-$(n,3,7)$ design over $\mathbb{F}_{2}$ for every integer $n$ coprime with 6. Here, by means of difference methods, we reprove and improve a little bit this result showing that it is true, more generally, for every odd $n$. In this way, we also find the first infinite family of non-trivial cyclic group divisible designs over $\mathbb{F}_{2}$.
Cayley Digraphs Associated to Arithmetic Groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
We explore a paradigm which ties together seemingly disparate areas in number theory, additive combinatorics, and geometric combinatorics including the classical Waring problem, the Furstenberg-Sárközy theorem on squares in sets of integers with positive density, and the study of triangles (also called $2$-simplices) in finite fields. Among other results we show that if $\mathbb{F}_q$ is the finite field of odd order $q$, then every matrix in $Mat_d(\mathbb{F}_q), d \geq 2$ is the sum of a certain (finite) number of orthogonal matrices, this number depending only on $d$, the size of the matrix, and on whether $q$ is congruent to $1$ or $3$ (mod $4$), but independent of $q$ otherwise.

Stability for maximal independent sets

Answering questions of Y. Rabinovich, we prove "stability" versions of upper bounds on maximal independent set counts in graphs under various restrictions. Roughly these say that being close to the maximum implies existence of a large induced matching or triangle matching (depending on assumptions).

State Polytopes Related to Two Classes of Combinatorial Neural Codes
Published • View Publication • BIB
Combinatorial neural codes are $0/1$ vectors that are used to model the co-firing patterns of a set of place cells in the brain. One wide-open problem in this area is to determine when a given code can be algorithmically drawn in the plane as a Venn diagram-like figure. A sufficient condition to do so is for the code to have a property called $k$-inductively pierced. Gross, Obatake, and Youngs recently used toric algebra to show that a code on three neurons is $1$-inductively pierced if and only if the toric ideal is trivial or generated by quadratics. No result is known for additional neurons in the same generality, part of the difficulty coming from the large number of codewords possible when additional neurons are used. In this article, we study two infinite classes of combinatorial neural codes in detail. For each code, we explicitly compute its universal Gröbner basis. This is done for the first class by recognizing that the codewords form a Lawrence-type matrix. With the second class, this is done by showing that the matrix is totally unimodular. These computations allow one to compute the state polytopes of the corresponding toric ideals, from which all distinct initial ideals may be computed efficiently. Moreover, we show that the state polytopes are combinatorially equivalent to well-known polytopes: the permutohedron and the stellohedron.

On the mixing time of the Diaconis--Gangolli random walk on contingency tables over $\mathbb{Z}/ q \mathbb{Z}$
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Diaconis--Gangolli random walk is an algorithm that generates an almost uniform random graph with prescribed degrees. In this paper, we study the mixing time of the Diaconis--Gangolli random walk restricted on $n\times n$ contingency tables over $\mathbb{Z}/q\mathbb{Z}$. We prove that the random walk exhibits cutoff at $\frac{n^2}{4(1- \cos{\frac{2 π}{q}})} \log n, $ when $\log q=o\left (\frac{\sqrt{\log n}}{\log \log n}\right )$.
The 4-Component Connectivity of Alternating Group Networks
Published in Theoretical Computer Science, Vol. 766, (2019) pp. 38-45 • View Publication • BIB
The $\ell$-component connectivity (or $\ell$-connectivity for short) of a graph $G$, denoted by $κ_\ell(G)$, is the minimum number of vertices whose removal from $G$ results in a disconnected graph with at least $\ell$ components or a graph with fewer than $\ell$ vertices. This generalization is a natural extension of the classical connectivity defined in term of minimum vertex-cut. As an application, the $\ell$-connectivity can be used to assess the vulnerability of a graph corresponding to the underlying topology of an interconnection network, and thus is an important issue for reliability and fault tolerance of the network. So far, only a little knowledge of results have been known on $\ell$-connectivity for particular classes of graphs and small $\ell$'s. In a previous work, we studied the $\ell$-connectivity on $n$-dimensional alternating group networks $AN_n$ and obtained the result $κ_3(AN_n)=2n-3$ for $n\geqslant 4$. In this sequel, we continue the work and show that $κ_4(AN_n)=3n-6$ for $n\geqslant 4$.

Elements of the q-Askey scheme in the algebra of symmetric functions
Published in Moscow Mathematical Journal 20 (2020), no. 4, 645-694 • View Publication • BIB
The classical q-hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials are assembled into a hierarchy called the q-Askey scheme. At the top of the hierarchy, there are two closely related families, the Askey-Wilson and q-Racah polynomials. As it is well known, their construction admits a generalization leading to remarkable orthogonal symmetric polynomials in several variables. We construct an analogue of the multivariable q-Racah polynomials in the algebra of symmetric functions. Next, we show that our q-Racah symmetric functions can be degenerated into the big q-Jacobi symmetric functions, introduced in a recent paper by the second author. The latter symmetric functions admit further degenerations leading to new symmetric functions, which are analogues of q-Meixner and Al-Salam--Carlitz polynomials. Each of the four families of symmetric functions (q-Racah, big q-Jacobi, q-Meixner, and Al-Salam--Carlitz) forms an orthogonal system of functions with respect to certain measure living on a space of infinite point configurations. The orthogonality measures of the four families are of independent interest. We show that they are linked by limit transitions which are consistent with the degenerations of the corresponding symmetric functions.
