On the joint distribution of the marginals of multipartite random quantum states
Published in "The joint distribution of the marginals of multipartite random quantum states." Random Matrices: Theory and Applications (2019): 2050010 • View Publication • BIB
We study the joint distribution of the set of all marginals of a random Wishart matrix acting on a tensor product Hilbert space. We compute the limiting free mixed cumulants of the marginals, and we show that in the balanced asymptotical regime, the marginals are asymptotically free. We connect the matrix integrals relevant to the study of operators on tensor product spaces with the corresponding classes of combinatorial maps, for which we develop the combinatorial machinery necessary for the asymptotic study. Finally, we present some applications to the theory of random quantum states in quantum information theory.

A short exposition of S. Parsa's theorems on intrinsic linking and non-realizability
Published in Discr. Comp. Geom. 65:2 (2021), 584-585 • View Publication • BIB
We present a short exposition of the following results by S. Parsa. Let $L$ be a graph such that the join $L*\{1,2,3\}$ (i.e. the union of three cones over $L$ along their common bases) piecewise linearly (PL) embeds into $\mathbb R^4$. Then $L$ admits a PL embedding into $\mathbb R^3$ such that any two disjoint cycles have zero linking number. There is $C$ such that every 2-dimensional simplicial complex having $n$ vertices and embeddable into $\mathbb R^4$ contains less than $Cn^{8/3}$ simplices of dimension 2. We also present the analogue of the second result for intrinsic linking.

Inequalities of Riesz-Sobolev type for compact connected Abelian groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
A version of the Riesz-Sobolev convolution inequality is formulated and proved for arbitrary compact connected Abelian groups. Maximizers are characterized and a quantitative stability theorem is proved, under natural hypotheses. A corresponding stability theorem for sets whose sumset has nearly minimal measure is also proved, sharpening recent results of other authors. For the special case of the group $\mathbb{R}/\mathbb{Z}$, a continuous deformation of sets is developed, under which an appropriately scaled Riesz-Sobolev functional is shown to be nondecreasing.

Ranked Schröder Trees
Published • View Publication • BIB
In biology, a phylogenetic tree is a tool to represent the evolutionary relationship between species. Unfortunately, the classical Schröder tree model is not adapted to take into account the chronology between the branching nodes. In particular, it does not answer the question: how many different phylogenetic stories lead to the creation of n species and what is the average time to get there? In this paper, we enrich this model in two distinct ways in order to obtain two ranked tree models for phylogenetics, i.e. models coding chronology. For that purpose, we first develop a model of (strongly) increasing Schröder trees, symbolically described in the classical context of increasing labeling. Then we introduce a generalization for the labeling with some unusual order constraint in Analytic Combinatorics (namely the weakly increasing trees). Although these models are direct extensions of the Schröder tree model, it appears that they are also in one-to-one correspondence with several classical combinatorial objects. Through the paper, we present these links, exhibit some parameters in typical large trees and conclude the studies with efficient uniform samplers.
Circulant matrices and Galois-Togliatti systems
Published • View Publication • BIB
The goal of this article is to compare the coefficients in the expansion of the permanent with those in the expansion of the determinant of a three-lines circulant matrix. As an application we prove a conjecture concerning the minimality of Galois-Togliatti systems.

What is an answer? - remarks, results and problems on PIO formulas in combinatorial enumeration, part I
For enumerative problems, i.e. computable functions f from N to Z, we define the notion of an effective (or closed) formula. It is an algorithm computing f(n) in the number of steps that is polynomial in the combined size of the input n and the output f(n), both written in binary notation. We discuss many examples of enumerative problems for which such closed formulas are, or are not, known. These problems include (i) linear recurrence sequences and holonomic sequences, (ii) integer partitions, (iii) pattern-avoiding permutations, (iv) triangle-free graphs and (v) regular graphs. In part I we discuss problems (i) and (ii) and defer (iii)--(v) to part II. Besides other results, we prove here that every linear recurrence sequence of integers has an effective formula in our sense.
Additive Volume of Sets Contained in Few Arithmetic Progressions
A conjecture of Freiman gives an exact formula for the largest volume of a finite set $A$ of integers with given cardinality $k = |A|$ and doubling $T = |2A|$. The formula is known to hold when $T \le 3k-4$, for some small range over $3k-4$ and for families of structured sets called chains. In this paper we extend the formula to sets of every dimension and prove it for sets composed of three segments, giving structural results for the extremal case. A weaker extension to sets composed of a bounded number of segments is also discussed.

An Upper Bound on the Number of $(132,213)$-Avoiding Cyclic Permutations
Published in Discrete Math. 342(6) (2019), 1762-1771 • View Publication • BIB
We show a $n^2 \cdot 2^{n/2}$ upper bound on the number of $(132,213)$ avoiding cyclic permutations. This is the first nontrivial upper bound on the number of such permutations. We also construct an algorithm to determine whether a $(132,213)$ avoiding permutation is cyclic that references only the permutation's layer lengths.

Stronger sum-product inequalities for small sets
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $F$ be a field and a finite $A\subset F$ be sufficiently small in terms of the characteristic $p$ of $F$ if $p>0$. We strengthen the "threshold" sum-product inequality $$|AA|^3 |A\pm A|^2 \gg |A|^6\,,\;\;\;\;\mbox{hence} \;\; \;\;|AA|+|A+A|\gg |A|^{1+\frac{1}{5}},$$ due to Roche-Newton, Rudnev and Shkredov, to $$|AA|^5 |A\pm A|^4 \gg |A|^{11-o(1)}\,,\;\;\;\;\mbox{hence} \;\; \;\;|AA|+|A\pm A|\gg |A|^{1+\frac{2}{9}-o(1)},$$ as well as $$ |AA|^{36}|A-A|^{24} \gg |A|^{73-o(1)}. $$ The latter inequality is "threshold-breaking", for it shows for $ε>0$, one has $$|AA| \le |A|^{1+ε}\;\;\;\Rightarrow\;\;\; |A-A|\gg |A|^{\frac{3}{2}+c(ε)},$$ with $c(ε)>0$ if $ε$ is sufficiently small. This implies that regardless of $ε$, $$|AA-AA|\gg |A|^{\frac{3}{2}+\frac{1}{56}-o(1)}\,.$$

Discrete Decreasing Minimization, Part II: Views from Discrete Convex Analysis
We continue to consider the discrete decreasing minimization problem on an integral base-polyhedron treated in Part I. The problem is to find a lexicographically minimal integral vector in an integral base-polyhedron, where the components of a vector are arranged in a decreasing order. This study can be regarded as a discrete counter-part of the work by Fujishige (1980) on the lexicographically optimal base and the principal partition of a base-polyhedron in continuous variables. The objective of Part II is two-fold. The first is to offer structural views from discrete convex analysis (DCA) on the results of Part I obtained by the constructive and algorithmic approach. The second objective is to pave the way of DCA approach to discrete decreasing minimization on other discrete structures such as the intersection of M-convex sets, flows, and submodular flows. We derive the structural results in Part I from fundamental facts on M-convex sets and M-convex functions in DCA. A direct characterization is given to the canonical partition, which was constructed by an iterative procedure in Part I. This reveals the precise relationship between the canonical partition for the discrete case and the principal partition for the continuous case. Moreover, this result entails a proximity theorem, stating that every decreasingly minimal element is contained in the small box containing the (unique) fractional decreasingly minimal element (the minimum-norm point), leading further to a continuous relaxation algorithm for finding a decreasingly minimal element of an M-convex set. Thus the relationship between the continuous and discrete cases is completely clarified. Furthermore, we present DCA min-max formulas for network flows, the intersection of two M-convex sets, and submodular flows.

The Eulerian distribution on involutions is indeed $γ$-positive
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $\mathcal I_n$ and $\mathcal J_n$ denote the set of involutions and fixed-point free involutions of $\{1, \dots, n\}$, respectively, and let $\text{des}(π)$ denote the number of descents of the permutation $π$. We prove a conjecture of Guo and Zeng which states that $I_n(t) := \sum_{π\in \mathcal I_n} t^{\text{des}(π)}$ is $γ$-positive for $n \ge 1$ and $J_{2n}(t) := \sum_{π\in \mathcal J_{2n}} t^{\text{des}(π)}$ is $γ$-positive for $n \ge 9$. We also prove that the number of $(3412, 3421)$-avoiding permutations with $m$ double descents and $k$ descents is equal to the number of separable permutations with $m$ double descents and $k$ descents.

Minimal covers of hypergraphs
Published in Discrete Math. 342:11 (2019), 3043-3046 • View Publication • BIB
For a hypergraph $H=(V,\mathcal E)$, a subfamily $\mathcal C\subseteq \mathcal E$ is called a cover of the hypergraph if $\bigcup\mathcal C=\bigcup\mathcal E$. A cover $\mathcal C$ is called minimal if each cover $\mathcal D\subseteq\mathcal C$ of the hypergraph $H$ coincides with $\mathcal C$. We prove that for a hypergraph $H$ the following conditions are equivalent: (i) each countable subhypergraph of $H$ has a minimal cover; (ii) each non-empty subhypergraph of $H$ has a maximal edge; (iii) $H$ contains no isomorphic copy of the hypergraph $(ω,ω)$. This characterization implies that a countable hypergraph $(V,\mathcal E)$ has a minimal cover if every infinite set $I\subseteq V$ contains a finite subset $F\subseteq I$ such that the family of edges $\mathcal E_F:=\{E\in\mathcal E:F\subseteq E\}$ is finite. Also we prove that a hypergraph $(V,\mathcal E)$ has a minimal cover if $\sup\{|E|:E\in\mathcal E\}<ω$ or for every $v\in V$ the family $\mathcal E_v:=\{E\in\mathcal E:v\in E\}$ is finite.

Large deviations and one-sided scaling limit of randomized multicolor box-ball system
Published • View Publication • BIB
The basic $κ$-color box-ball (BBS) system is an integrable cellular automaton on one dimensional lattice whose local states take $\{0,1,\cdots,κ\}$ with $0$ regarded as an empty box. The time evolution is defined by a combinatorial rule of quantum group theoretical origin, and the complete set of conserved quantities is given by a $κ$-tuple of Young diagrams. In the randomized BBS, a probability distribution on $\{0,1,\cdots,κ\}$ to independently fill the consecutive $n$ sites in the initial state induces a highly nontrivial probability measure on the $κ$-tuple of those invariant Young diagrams. In a recent work \cite{kuniba2018randomized}, their large $n$ `equilibrium shape' has been determined in terms of Schur polynomials by a Markov chain method and also by a very different approach of Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz (TBA). In this paper, we establish a large deviations principle for the row lengths of the invariant Young diagrams. As a corollary, they are shown to converge almost surely to the equilibrium shape at an exponential rate. We also refine the TBA analysis and obtain the exact scaling form of the vacancy, the row length and the column multiplicity, which exhibit nontrivial factorization in a one-parameter specialization.

Set-partition tableaux and representations of diagram algebras
Published • View Publication • BIB
The partition algebra is an associative algebra with a basis of set-partition diagrams and multiplication given by diagram concatenation. It contains as subalgebras a large class of diagram algebras including the Brauer, planar partition, rook monoid, rook-Brauer, Temperley-Lieb, Motzkin, planar rook monoid, and symmetric group algebras. We give a construction of the irreducible modules of these algebras in two isomorphic ways: first, as the span of symmetric diagrams on which the algebra acts by conjugation twisted with an irreducible symmetric group representation and, second, on a basis indexed by set-partition tableaux such that diagrams in the algebra act combinatorially on tableaux. The first representation is analogous to the Gelfand model and the second is a generalization of Young's natural representation of the symmetric group on standard tableaux. The methods of this paper work uniformly for the partition algebra and its diagram subalgebras. As an application, we express the characters of each of these algebras as nonnegative integer combinations of symmetric group characters whose coefficients count fixed points under conjugation.

Simply Generated Unrooted Plane Trees
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study random unrooted plane trees with $n$ vertices sampled according to the weights corresponding to the vertex-degrees. Our main result shows that if the generating series of the weights has positive radius of convergence, then this model of random trees may be approximated geometrically by a Galton--Watson tree conditioned on having a large random size. This implies that a variety of results for the well-studied planted case also hold for unrooted trees, including Gromov--Hausdorff--Prokhorov scaling limits, tail-bounds for the diameter, distributional graph limits, and limits for the maximum degree. Our work complements results by Wang~(2016), who studied random unrooted plane trees whose diameter tends to infinity.
Detecting strong cliques
A strong clique in a graph is a clique intersecting every maximal independent set. We study the computational complexity of six algorithmic decision problems related to strong cliques in graphs and almost completely determine their complexity in the classes of chordal graphs, weakly chordal graphs, line graphs and their complements, and graphs of maximum degree at most three. Our results rely on connections with matchings and relate to several graph properties studied in the literature, including well-covered graphs, localizable graphs, and general partition graphs.

Discrete Decreasing Minimization, Part I: Base-polyhedra with Applications in Network Optimization
Borradaile et al. (2017) investigated orientations of an undirected graph in which the sequence of in-degrees of the nodes is lexicographically minimal, which we call decreasingly minimal (=dec-min). They proved that an orientation is dec-min if and only if there is no dipath from $s$ to $t$ with in-degrees $\varrho (t) \geq \varrho (s)+2$. They conjectured that an analogous statement holds for strongly connected dec-min orientations, as well. We prove not only this conjecture but its extension to $k$-edge-connected orientations, as well. We also provide a solution to a discrete version of Megiddo's lexicographically optimal (fractional) network flow problem (1974, 1977). Our main goal is to integrate these cases into a single framework. Namely, we characterize dec-min elements of an M-convex set (which is nothing but the set of integral points of an integral base-polyhedron), and prove that the set of dec-min elements is a special M-convex set arising from a matroid base-polyhedron by translation. The topic of our investigations may be interpreted as a discrete counter-part of the work by Fujishige (1980) on the (unique) lexicographically optimal base of a base-polyhedron. We also exhibit a canonical chain (and partition) associated with a base-polyhedron. We also show that dec-min elements of an M-convex set are exactly those which minimize the square-sum of components, and describe a new min-max formula for the minimum square-sum. Our approach gives rise to a strongly polynomial algorithm for computing a dec-min element, as well as the canonical chain. The algorithm relies on a submodular function minimizer oracle in the general case, which can, however, be replaced by more efficient classic flow- and matroid algorithms in the relevant special cases.
Avoiding long Berge cycles, the missing cases $k=r+1$ and $k = r+2$
Published • View Publication • BIB
The maximum size of an $r$-uniform hypergraph without a Berge cycle of length at least $k$ has been determined for all $k \ge r+3$ by Füredi, Kostochka and Luo and for $k<r$ (and $k=r$, asymptotically) by Kostochka and Luo. In this paper, we settle the remaining cases: $k=r+1$ and $k=r+2$, proving a conjecture of Füredi, Kostochka and Luo.

Euler tours in hypergraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that a quasirandom $k$-uniform hypergraph $G$ has a tight Euler tour subject to the necessary condition that $k$ divides all vertex degrees. The case when $G$ is complete confirms a conjecture of Chung, Diaconis and Graham from 1989 on the existence of universal cycles for the $k$-subsets of an $n$-set.
