Maximum and minimum degree conditions for embedding trees
Published • View Publication • BIB
We propose the following conjecture: For every fixed $α\in [0,\frac 13)$, each graph of minimum degree at least $(1+α)\frac k2$ and maximum degree at least $2(1-α)k$ contains each tree with $k$ edges as a subgraph. Our main result is an approximate version of the conjecture for bounded degree trees and large dense host graphs. We also show that our conjecture is asymptotically best possible. The proof of the approximate result relies on a second result, which we believe to be interesting on its own. Namely, we can embed any bounded degree tree into host graphs of minimum/maximum degree asymptotically exceeding $\frac k2$ and $\frac 43k$, respectively, as long as the host graph avoids a specific structure.
ABHY Associahedra and Newton polytopes of $F$-polynomials for finite type cluster algebras
Published • View Publication • BIB
A new construction of the associahedron was recently given by Arkani-Hamed, Bai, He, and Yan in connection with the physics of scattering amplitudes. We show that their construction (suitably understood) can be applied to construct generalized associahedra of any simply-laced Dynkin type. Unexpectedly, we also show that this same construction produces Newton polytopes for all the $F$-polynomials of the corresponding cluster algebras. In addition, we show that the toric variety associated to the g-vector fan has the property that its nef cone is simplicial.

Note on the group edge irregularity strength of graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We investigate the \textit{edge group irregularity strength} ($es_g(G)$) of graphs, i.e. the smallest value of $s$ such that taking any Abelian group $\mathcal{G}$ of order $s$, there exists a function $f:V(G)\rightarrow \mathcal{G}$ such that the sums of vertex labels at every edge are distinct. In this note we provide some upper bounds on $es_g(G)$ as well as for edge irregularity strength $es(G)$ and harmonious order $\rm{har}(G)$.

The Fundamental Morphism Theorem in the Categories of Graphs & Graph Reconstruction
The Fundamental Morphism Theorem is a categorical version of the First Noether Isomorphism Theorem for categories that do not have kernels or cokernels. We consider two categories of graphs. Both categories will admit graphs with multiple edges and loops, and are distinguished by allowing two different types of homomorphisms, standard graph homomorphisms and more general graph homomorphisms where the contraction of an edge is allowed. We establish the Fundamental Morphism Theorem in these two categories of graphs. We then use the result to provide an equivalent reformulation of the vertex and edge reconstruction conjectures. This reformulation shows that reconstructability is equivalent to the existence of a graph homomorphism satisfying an equation.

Improved Upper Bounds for Gallai-Ramsey Numbers of Odd Cycles
A Gallai coloring of a complete graph is an edge-coloring such that no triangle has all its edges colored differently. A Gallai $k$-coloring is a Gallai coloring that uses $k$ colors. Given an integer $k\ge1$ and a graph $H$, the Gallai-Ramsey number $GR_k(H)$ is the least positive integer $n$ such that every Gallai $k$-coloring of the complete graph $K_n$ contains a monochromatic copy of $H$. Gyárfás, Sárközy, Sebő and Selkow proved in 2010 that $GR_k (H) $ is exponential in $k$ if $H$ is not bipartite, linear in $k$ if $H$ is bipartite but not a star, and constant (does not depend on $k$) when $H$ is a star. Hence, $GR_k(H)$ is more well-behaved than the classical Ramsey number $R_k(H)$. However, finding exact values of $GR_k (H)$ is far from trivial, even when $|V(H)|$ is small. In this paper, we first improve the existing upper bounds for Gallai-Ramsey numbers of odd cycles by showing that $GR_k(C_{2n+1}) \le (n\ln n) \cdot 2^k -(k+1)n+1$ for all $k \ge 3$ and $n \ge 8$. We then prove that $GR_k( C_{13})= 6\cdot 2^k+1$ and $GR_k( C_{15})= 7\cdot 2^k+1$ for all $k\ge1$.

A Universal Bijection for Catalan Structures
A Catalan magma is a unique factorisation normed magma with only one irreducible element. The \val partitions the base set into subsets enumerated by Catalan numbers. The primary theorem characterises the conditions which a set a with product map must satisfy in order to be a free magma generated by the irreducible elements. This theorem can be used to prove a set of objects (with a product map) is a Catalan magma. The isomorphism between Catalan magmas gives a "universal" bijection -- essentially one bijection algorithm for all pairs of families. The morphism property ensures the bijection is recursive. The universal bijection allows us to give some rigour to the idea of an "embedding" bijection between Catalan objects which, in many cases, shows how to embed an element of one Catalan family into one of a different family. Multiplication on the right (respectively left) by the generator gives rise to the right (respectively left) Narayana statistic. The statistic is invariant under the universal bijection and hence allows us to determine what structures of any Catalan family are associated with this refinement. We discuss the relation between the symbolic method for Catalan families and the magma structure on the base set defined by the symbolic method. This shows which "atomic" elements are also irreducible. The appendix gives the magma structure for 14 Catalan families.

Hirzebruch-type inequalities viewed as tools in combinatorics
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, 28(1): #P1.9 (2021) • View Publication • BIB
The main purpose of this survey is to provide an introduction, algebro-topological in nature, to Hirzebuch-type inequalities for plane curve arrangements in the complex projective plane. These inequalities gain more and more interest due to their utility in many combinatorial problems related to point or line arrangements in the plane. We would like to present a summary of the technicalities and also some recent applications, for instance in the context of the Weak Dirac Conjecture. We also advertise some open problems and questions.
The dispersion time of random walks on finite graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study two random processes on an $n$-vertex graph inspired by the internal diffusion limited aggregation (IDLA) model. In both processes $n$ particles start from an arbitrary but fixed origin. Each particle performs a simple random walk until first encountering an unoccupied vertex, and at which point the vertex becomes occupied and the random walk terminates. In one of the processes, called \textit{Sequential-IDLA}, only one particle moves until settling and only then does the next particle start whereas in the second process, called \textit{Parallel-IDLA}, all unsettled particles move simultaneously. Our main goal is to analyze the so-called dispersion time of these processes, which is the maximum number of steps performed by any of the $n$ particles. In order to compare the two processes, we develop a coupling which shows the dispersion time of the Parallel-IDLA stochastically dominates that of the Sequential-IDLA; however, the total number of steps performed by all particles has the same distribution in both processes. This coupling also gives us that dispersion time of Parallel-IDLA is bounded in expectation by dispersion time of the Sequential-IDLA up to a multiplicative $\log n$ factor. Moreover, we derive asymptotic upper and lower bound on the dispersion time for several graph classes, such as cliques, cycles, binary trees, $d$-dimensional grids, hypercubes and expanders. Most of our bounds are tight up to a multiplicative constant.

Geometric progressions in syndetic sets
Published • View Publication • BIB
In order to investigate multiplicative structures in additively large sets, Beiglböck et al. raised a significant open question as to whether or not every subset of the natural numbers with bounded gaps (syndetic set) contains arbitrarily long geometric progressions. A result of Erdős implies that syndetic sets contain a $2$-term geometric progression with integer common ratio, but we still do not know if they contain such a progression with common ratio being a perfect square. In this article, we prove that for each $k\in \mathbb{N}$, a syndetic set contains $2$-term geometric progressions with common ratios of the form $n^kr_1$ and $p^kr_2$, where $p\in\mathbb{P}$ (the set of primes), $n$ is a composite number, $r_1\equiv 1 \pmod{n}$, $r_2\equiv 1\pmod{p}$ and $r_1,r_2\in \mathbb{N}$. We also show that 2-syndetic sets (sets with bounded gap two) contain infinitely many $2$-term geometric progressions with their respective common ratios being perfect squares.
Gallai-Ramsey numbers of odd cycles
Given two graphs $G$ and $H$ and a positive integer $k$, the $k$-color Gallai-Ramsey number, denoted by $gr_{k}(G : H)$, is the minimum integer $N$ such that for all $n \geq N$, every $k$-coloring of the edges of $K_{n}$ contains either a rainbow copy of $G$ or a monochromatic copy of $H$. We prove that $gr_{k} (K_{3} : C_{2\ell + 1}) = \ell \cdot 2^{k} + 1$ for all $k \geq 1$ and $\ell \geq 3$.

The Undirected Optical Indices of Trees
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a connected graph $G$, an instance $I$ is a set of pairs of vertices and a corresponding routing $R$ is a set of paths specified for all vertex-pairs in $I$. Let $\mathfrak{R}_I$ be the collection of all routings with respect to $I$. The undirected optical index of $G$ with respect to $I$ refers to the minimum integer $k$ to guarantee the existence of a mapping $φ:R\to\{1,2,\ldots,k\}$, such that $φ(P)\neqφ(P')$ if $P$ and $P'$ have common edge(s), over all routings $R\in\mathfrak{R}_I$. A natural lower bound of the undirected optical index is the edge-forwarding index, which is defined to be the minimum of the maximum edge-load over all possible routings. Let $w(G,I)$ and $π(G,I)$ denote the undirected optical index and edge-forwarding index with respect to $I$, respectively. In this paper, we derive the inequality $w(T,I_A)<\frac{3}{2}π(T,I_A)$ for any tree $T$, where $I_A:=\{\{x,y\}:\,x,y\in V(T)\}$ is the all-to-all instance.

A Set of Conjectured Identities for Stirling Numbers of the First Kind
Given an integer g, g > 1, an integer w, -1 < w <g - 1, and a set of g distinct numbers, c_1, ..., c_g, we present a conjectured identity for Stirling numbers of the first kind. We have proven all the equalities in case g < 7; and for the case g = 7, provided w < 4. These expressions arise from an aspect of the study of the dimer-monomer problem on regular graphs.
New covering codes of radius $R$, codimension $tR$ and $tR+\frac{R}{2}$, and saturating sets in projective spaces
Published • View Publication • BIB
The length function $\ell_q(r,R)$ is the smallest length of a $ q $-ary linear code of codimension $r$ and covering radius $R$. In this work we obtain new constructive upper bounds on $\ell_q(r,R)$ for all $R\ge4$, $r=tR$, $t\ge2$, and also for all even $R\ge2$, $r=tR+\frac{R}{2}$, $t\ge1$. The new bounds are provided by infinite families of new covering codes with fixed $R$ and increasing codimension. The new bounds improve upon the known ones. We propose a general regular construction (called ``Line+Ovals'') of a minimal $ρ$-saturating $((ρ+1)q+1)$-set in the projective space $\mathrm{PG}(2ρ+1,q)$ for all $ρ\ge0$. Such a set corresponds to an $[Rq+1,Rq+1-2R,3]_qR$ locally optimal$^1$ code of covering radius $R=ρ+1$. Basing on combinatorial properties of these codes regarding to spherical capsules$^1$, we give constructions for code codimension lifting and obtain infinite families of new surface-covering$^1$ codes with codimension $r=tR$, $t\ge2$. In addition, we obtain new 1-saturating sets in the projective plane $\mathrm{PG}(2,q^2)$ and, basing on them, construct infinite code families with fixed even radius $R\ge2$ and codimension $r=tR+\frac{R}{2}$, $t\ge1$. Immaculate line bundles on toric varieties
Published • View Publication • BIB
We call a sheaf on an algebraic variety immaculate if it lacks any cohomology including the zero-th one, that is, if the derived version of the global section functor vanishes. Such sheaves are the basic tools when building exceptional sequences, investigating the diagonal property, or the toric Frobenius morphism. In the present paper we focus on line bundles on toric varieties. First, we present a possibility of understanding their cohomology in terms of their (generalized) momentum polytopes. Then we present a method to exhibit the entire locus of immaculate divisors within the class group. This will be applied to the cases of smooth toric varieties of Picard rank two and three and to those being given by splitting fans. The locus of immaculate line bundles contains several linear strata of varying dimensions. We introduce a notion of relative immaculacy with respect to certain contraction morphisms. This notion will be stronger than plain immaculacy and provides an explanation of some of these linear strata.

An explicit formula for a weight enumerator of linear-congruence codes
Published in Bulletin of the Institute of Combinatorics and its Applications 90 (2020) 34-38 • Search Publication
An explicit formula for a weight enumerator of linear-congruence codes is provided. This extends the work of Bibak and Milenkovic [IEEE ISIT (2018) 431-435] addressing the binary case to the non-binary case. Furthermore, the extension simplifies their proof and provides a complete solution to a problem posed by them.

Classification of Reconfiguration Graphs of Shortest Path Graphs With No Induced $4$-cycles
Published • View Publication • BIB
For any graph $G$ with $a,b\in V(G)$, a shortest path reconfiguration graph can be formed with respect to $a$ and $b$; we denote such a graph as $S(G,a,b)$. The vertex set of $S(G,a,b)$ is the set of all shortest paths from $a$ to $b$ in $G$ while two vertices $U,W$ in $V(S(G,a,b))$ are adjacent if and only if the vertex sets of the paths that represent $U$ and $W$ differ in exactly one vertex. In a recent paper [Asplund et al., \textit{Reconfiguration graphs of shortest paths}, Discrete Mathematics \textbf{341} (2018), no. 10, 2938--2948], it was shown that shortest path graphs with girth five or greater are exactly disjoint unions of even cycles and paths. In this paper, we extend this result by classifying all shortest path graphs with no induced $4$-cycles.

Safe 3-coloring of graphs
The applications of graph coloring are diverse and many so lots of new types of coloring are being proposed and explored. Here we define a safe k-coloring, motivated by the application of coloring to secret sharing. Secret sharing is a way of securing a secret from a number of attackers by dividing it into parts and then distributing those parts to some persons, represented here by graph vertices. Parts of the secret are represented by colors which are then assigned to the vertices under certain conditions, making a coloring safe if a predetermined number of attackers cannot read the whole secret, nor disable the rest of the group from doing so. We observe a fixed number of colors, namely 3, and analyze what kind of graphs have a safe 3-coloring.

Extending weakly polynomial functions from high rank varieties
Let $k$ be a field, $V$ a $k$-vector space and $X$ be a subset of $V $. A function $f:X\to k$ is weakly polynomial of degree $\leq a$, if the restriction of $f$ on any affine subspace $L\subset X$ is a polynomial of degree $\leq a$. In this paper we consider the case when $X= \mathbb X (k)$ where $\mathbb X$ is a complete intersection of bounded codimension defined by a high rank polynomials of degrees $d, char(k)=0$ or $char (k)>d$ and either $k$ is algebraically closed, or $k=\mathbb F _q,q>ad$. We show that under these assumptions any $k$-valued weakly polynomial function of degree $ \leq a$ on $X$ is a restriction of a polynomial of degree $\leq a$ on $V$. Our proof is based on Theorem 1.11 on fibers of polynomial morphisms $P:\mathbb F _q^n\to \mathbb F _q^m$ of high rank. This result is of an independent interest. For example it immediately implies a strengthening of the result of [4].
Treewidth and gonality of glued grid graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We compute the treewidth of a family of graphs we refer to as the glued grids, consisting of the stacked prism graphs and the toroidal grids. Our main technique is constructing strict brambles of large orders. We discuss connections to divisorial graph theory coming from tropical geometry, and use our results to compute the divisorial gonality of these graphs.

Symmetries of 3-polytopes with fixed edge lengths
Published in SEMR 17 (2020), 1580-1587 • View Publication • BIB
We consider an interesting class of combinatorial symmetries of polytopes which we call \emph{edge-length preserving combinatorial symmetries}. These symmetries not only preserve the combinatorial structure of a polytope but also map each edge of the polytope to an edge of the same length. We prove a simple sufficient condition for a polytope to realize all edge-length preserving combinatorial symmetries by isometries of ambient space. The proof of this condition uses Cauchy's rigidity theorem in an unusual way.
