The number of crossings in multigraphs with no empty lens
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a multigraph with $n$ vertices and $e>4n$ edges, drawn in the plane such that any two parallel edges form a simple closed curve with at least one vertex in its interior and at least one vertex in its exterior. Pach and Tóth (A Crossing Lemma for Multigraphs, SoCG 2018) extended the Crossing Lemma of Ajtai et al. (Crossing-free subgraphs, North-Holland Mathematics Studies, 1982) and Leighton (Complexity issues in VLSI, Foundations of computing series, 1983) by showing that if no two adjacent edges cross and every pair of nonadjacent edges cross at most once, then the number of edge crossings in $G$ is at least $αe^3/n^2$, for a suitable constant $α>0$. The situation turns out to be quite different if nonparallel edges are allowed to cross any number of times. It is proved that in this case the number of crossings in $G$ is at least $αe^{2.5}/n^{1.5}$. The order of magnitude of this bound cannot be improved.

On self-avoiding polygons and walks: the snake method via polygon joining
Published • View Publication • BIB
For $d \geq 2$ and $n \in \mathbb{N}$, let $\mathsf{W}_n$ denote the uniform law on self-avoiding walks beginning at the origin in the integer lattice $\mathbb{Z}^d$, and write $Γ$ for a $\mathsf{W}_n$-distributed walk. We show that the closing probability $\mathsf{W}_n \big( \vert \vert Γ_n \vert \vert = 1 \big)$ that $Γ$'s endpoint neighbours the origin is at most $n^{-4/7 + o(1)}$ for a positive density set of odd $n$ in dimension $d = 2$. This result is proved using the snake method, a technique for proving closing probability upper bounds, which originated in [3] and was made explicit in [8]. Our conclusion is reached by applying the snake method in unison with a polygon joining technique whose use was initiated by Madras in [13].
On the Structure of Isometrically Embeddable Metric Spaces
Published • View Publication • BIB
Since its popularization in the 1970s the Fiedler vector of a graph has become a standard tool for clustering of the vertices of the graph. Recently, Mendel and Noar, Dumitriu and Radcliffe, and Radcliffe and Williamson have introduced geometric generalizations of the Fiedler vector. Motivated by questions stemming from their work we provide structural characterizations for when a finite metric space can be isometrically embedded in a Hilbert space.

The eternal dominating set problem for interval graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that, in games in which all the guards move at the same turn, the eternal domination and the clique-connected cover numbers coincide for interval graphs. A linear algorithm for the eternal dominating set problem is obtained as a by-product.

On self-avoiding polygons and walks: the snake method via pattern fluctuation
Published • View Publication • BIB
For $d \geq 2$ and $n \in \mathbb{N}$, let $\mathsf{W}_n$ denote the uniform law on self-avoiding walks of length $n$ beginning at the origin in the nearest-neighbour integer lattice $\mathbb{Z}^d$, and write $Γ$ for a $\mathsf{W}_n$-distributed walk. We show that the closing probability $\mathsf{W}_n \big( \vert\vert Γ_n \vert\vert = 1 \big)$ that $Γ$'s endpoint neighbours the origin is at most $n^{-1/2 + o(1)}$ in any dimension $d \geq 2$. The method of proof is a reworking of that in [4], which found a closing probability upper bound of $n^{-1/4 + o(1)}$. A key element of the proof is made explicit and called the snake method. It is applied to prove the $n^{-1/2 + o(1)}$ upper bound by means a technique of Gaussian pattern fluctuation.

Gallai-Ramsey numbers of $C_{10}$ and $C_{12}$
A Gallai coloring is a coloring of the edges of a complete graph without rainbow triangles, and a Gallai $k$-coloring is a Gallai coloring that uses $k$ colors. Given an integer $k\ge1$ and graphs $H_1, \ldots, H_k$, the Gallai-Ramsey number $GR(H_1, \ldots, H_k)$ is the least integer $n$ such that every Gallai $k$-coloring of the complete graph $K_n$ contains a monochromatic copy of $H_i$ in color $i$ for some $i \in \{1, \ldots, k\}$. When $H = H_1 = \cdots = H_k$, we simply write $GR_k(H)$. We continue to study Gallai-Ramsey numbers of even cycles and paths. For all $n\ge3$ and $k\ge1$, let $G_i=P_{2i+3}$ be a path on $2i+3$ vertices for all $i\in\{0,1, \ldots, n-2\}$ and $G_{n-1}\in\{C_{2n}, P_{2n+1}\}$. Let $ i_j\in\{0,1,\ldots, n-1\}$ for all $j\in\{1, \ldots, k\}$ with $ i_1\ge i_2\ge\cdots\ge i_k $. Song recently conjectured that $GR(G_{i_1}, \ldots, G_{i_k}) = 3+\min\{i_1, n^*-2\}+\sum_{j=1}^k i_j$, where $n^* =n$ when $G_{i_1}\ne P_{2n+1}$ and $n^* =n+1$ when $G_{i_1}= P_{2n+1}$. This conjecture has been verified to be true for $n\in\{3,4\}$ and all $k\ge1$. In this paper, we prove that the aforementioned conjecture holds for $n \in\{5, 6\}$ and all $k \ge1$. Our result implies that for all $k \ge 1$, $GR_k(C_{2n}) = GR_k(P_{2n}) = (n-1)k+n+1$ for $n\in\{5,6\}$ and $GR_k(P_{2n+1})= (n-1)k+n+2$ for $1\le n \le6 $.

On the cover time of the emerging giant
Published in SIAM J. Discrete Math. 36 (2022), no. 3, 1687-1710 • View Publication • BIB
Let $p=\frac{1+\varepsilon}{n}$. It is known that if $N=\varepsilon^3n\to\infty$ then w.h.p. $G_{n,p}$ has a unique giant largest component. We show that if in addition, $\varepsilon=\varepsilon(n)\to 0$ then w.h.p. the cover time of $G_{n,p}$ is asymptotic to $n\log^2N$; previously Barlow, Ding, Nachmias and Peres had shown this up to constant multiplicative factors.

Stein's method and Narayana numbers
Published • View Publication • BIB
Narayana numbers appear in many places in combinatorics and probability, and it is known that they are asymptotically normal. Using Stein's method of exchangeable pairs, we provide an error of approximation in total variation to a symmetric binomial distribution of order~$n^{-1}$, which also implies a Kolmogorov bound of order~$n^{-1/2}$ for the normal approximation. Our exchangeable pair is based on a birth-death chain and has remarkable properties, which allow us to perform some otherwise tricky moment computations. Although our main interest is in Narayana numbers, we show that our main abstract result can also give improved convergence rates for the Poisson-binomial and the hypergeometric distributions.

The matching number of tree and bipartite degree sequences
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the possible values of the matching number among all trees with a given degree sequence as well as all bipartite graphs with a given bipartite degree sequence. For tree degree sequences, we obtain closed formulas for the possible values. For bipartite degree sequences, we show the existence of realizations with a restricted structure, which allows to derive an analogue of the Gale-Ryser Theorem characterizing bipartite degree sequences. More precisely, we show that a bipartite degree sequence has a realization with a certain matching number if and only if a cubic number of inequalities similar to those in the Gale-Ryser Theorem are satisfied. For tree degree sequences as well as for bipartite degree sequences, the possible values of the matching number form intervals.

On the minimum number of facets of a 2-neighborly polytope
Let $μ_{\text{2n}}(d,v)$ (respectively, $μ^{\text{s}}_{\text{2n}}(d,v)$) be the minimal number of facets of a (simplicial) 2-neighborly $d$-polytope with $v$ vertices, $v > d \ge 4$. It is known that $μ_{\text{2n}}(4,v) = v (v-3)/2$, $μ_{\text{2n}}(d, d+2) = d+5$, $μ_{\text{2n}}(d,d+3) = d+7$ for $d \ge 5$, and $μ_{\text{2n}}(d,d+4) \in [d+5, d+8]$ for $d \ge 6$. We show that $μ_{\text{2n}}(5, v) = Ω(v^{4/3})$, $μ_{\text{2n}}(6, v) \ge v$, and the equality $μ_{\text{2n}}(6, v) = v$ holds only for a simplex and for a dual 2-neighborly 6-polytope (if it exists) with $v \ge 27$. By using $g$-theorem, we get $μ^{\text{s}}_{\text{2n}}(d, v) = Δ(Δ(d-3) + 3d - 5)/2 + d + 1$, where $Δ= v - d - 1$. Also we show that $μ_{\text{2n}}(d, v) \ge d+7$ for $v \ge d+4$.

Total positivity of a class of combinatorial matrices
In this paper, we consider matrices whose entries are combinatorial sequences which can be expressed in terms of a convolution of elementary and complete homogeneous symmetric functions. We establish the total positivity of these matrices using the Lindström-Gessel-Viennot Lemma.

On the transmission of uniform unicyclic hypergraphs
The transmission of a connected hypergraph is defined as the summation of distances between all unordered pairs of distinct vertices. We determine the unique uniform unicyclic hypergraphs of fixed size with minimum and maximum transmissions, respectively.

Partitioning edge-coloured infinite complete bipartite graphs into monochromatic paths
In 1978, Richard Rado showed that every edge-coloured complete graph of countably infinite order can be partitioned into monochromatic paths of different colours. He asked whether this remains true for uncountable complete graphs and a notion of \emph{generalised paths}. In 2016, Daniel Soukup answered this in the affirmative and conjectured that a similar result should hold for complete bipartite graphs with bipartition classes of the same infinite cardinality, namely that every such graph edge-coloured with $r$ colours can be partitioned into $2r-1$ monochromatic generalised paths with each colour being used at most twice. In the present paper, we give an affirmative answer to Soukup's conjecture.

The Anti-Ramsey Problem for the Sidon equation
Published • View Publication • BIB
For $n \geq k \geq 4$, let $AR_{X + Y = Z + T}^k (n)$ be the maximum number of rainbow solutions to the Sidon equation $X+Y = Z + T$ over all $k$-colorings $c:[n] \rightarrow [k]$. It can be shown that the total number of solutions in $[n]$ to the Sidon equation is $n^3/12 + O(n^2)$ and so, trivially, $AR_{X+Y = Z + T}^k (n) \leq n^3 /12 + O (n^2)$. We improve this upper bound to \[ AR_{X+Y = Z+ T}^k (n) \leq \left( \frac{1}{12} - \frac{1}{24k} \right)n^3 + O_k(n^2) \] for all $n \geq k \geq 4$. Furthermore, we give an explicit $k$-coloring of $[n]$ with more rainbow solutions to the Sidon equation than a random $k$-coloring, and gives a lower bound of \[ \left( \frac{1}{12} - \frac{1}{3k} \right)n^3 - O_k (n^2) \leq AR_{X+Y = Z+ T}^k (n). \] When $k = 4$, we use a different approach based on additive energy to obtain an upper bound of $3n^3 / 96 + O(n^2)$, whereas our lower bound is $2n^3 / 96 - O (n^2)$ in this case.

Generalizations of TASEP in discrete and continuous inhomogeneous space
Published • View Publication • BIB
We investigate a rich new class of exactly solvable particle systems generalizing the Totally Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process (TASEP). Our particle systems can be thought of as new exactly solvable examples of tandem queues, directed first- or last-passage percolation models, or Robinson-Schensted-Knuth type systems with random input. One of the novel features of the particle systems is the presence of spatial inhomogeneity which can lead to the formation of traffic jams. For systems with special step-like initial data, we find explicit limit shapes, describe hydrodynamic evolution, and obtain asymptotic fluctuation results which put the systems into the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality class. At a critical scaling around a traffic jam in the continuous space TASEP, we observe deformations of the Tracy-Widom distribution and the extended Airy kernel, revealing the finer structure of this novel type of phase transitions. A homogeneous version of a discrete space system we consider is a one-parameter deformation of the geometric last-passage percolation, and we obtain extensions of the limit shape parabola and the corresponding asymptotic fluctuation results. The exact solvability and asymptotic behavior results are powered by a new nontrivial connection to Schur measures and processes.

Ramsey numbers of Berge-hypergraphs and related structures
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a graph $G=(V,E)$, a hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ is called a Berge-$G$, denoted by $BG$, if there exists a bijection $f: E(G) \to E(\mathcal{H})$ such that for every $e \in E(G)$, $e \subseteq f(e)$. Let the Ramsey number $R^r(BG,BG)$ be the smallest integer $n$ such that for any $2$-edge-coloring of a complete $r$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices, there is a monochromatic Berge-$G$ subhypergraph. In this paper, we show that the 2-color Ramsey number of Berge cliques is linear. In particular, we show that $R^3(BK_s, BK_t) = s+t-3$ for $s,t \geq 4$ and $\max(s,t) \geq 5$ where $BK_n$ is a Berge-$K_n$ hypergraph. For higher uniformity, we show that $R^4(BK_t, BK_t) = t+1$ for $t\geq 6$ and $R^k(BK_t, BK_t)=t$ for $k \geq 5$ and $t$ sufficiently large. We also investigate the Ramsey number of trace hypergraphs, suspension hypergraphs and expansion hypergraphs.

Zero forcing and maximum nullity for hypergraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The concept of zero forcing is extended from graphs to uniform hypergraphs in analogy with the way zero forcing was defined as an upper bound for the maximum nullity of the family of symmetric matrices whose nonzero pattern of entries is described by a given graph: A family of symmetric hypermatrices is associated with a uniform hypergraph and zeros are forced in a null vector. The value of the hypergraph zero forcing number and maximum nullity are determined for various families of uniform hypergraphs and the effects of several graph operations on the hypergraph zero forcing number are determined. The hypergraph zero forcing number is compared to the infection number of a hypergraph and the iteration process in hypergraph power domination.

Kasteleyn cokernels and perfect matchings on planar bipartite graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The determinant method of Kasteleyn gives a method of computing the number of perfect matchings of a planar bipartite graph. In addition, results of Bernardi exhibit a bijection between spanning trees of a planar bipartite graph and elements of its Jacobian. In this paper, we explore an analogue of Bernardi's results, providing a canonical simply transitive group action of the Kasteleyn cokernel of a planar bipartite graph on its set of perfect matchings, when the planar bipartite graph in question is of the form $G^+$, as defined by Kenyon, Propp and Wilson.
