Strong cliques in vertex-transitive graphs
A clique (resp., independent set) in a graph is strong if it intersects every maximal independent sets (resp., every maximal cliques). A graph is CIS if all of its maximal cliques are strong and localizable if it admits a partition of its vertex set into strong cliques. In this paper we prove that a clique $C$ in a vertex-transitive graph $Γ$ is strong if and only if $|C||I|=|V(Γ)|$ for every maximal independent set $I$ of $Γ$. Based on this result we prove that a vertex-transitive graph is CIS if and only if it admits a strong clique and a strong independent set. We classify all vertex-transitive graphs of valency at most 4 admitting a strong clique, and give a partial characterization of $5$-valent vertex-transitive graphs admitting a strong clique. Our results imply that every vertex-transitive graph of valency at most $5$ that admits a strong clique is localizable. We answer an open question by providing an example of a vertex-transitive CIS graph which is not localizable.

Approximately counting bases of bicircular matroids
Published in Combinator. Probab. Comp. 30 (2021) 124-135 • View Publication • BIB
We give a fully polynomial-time randomised approximation scheme (FPRAS) for the number of bases in a bicircular matroids. This is a natural class of matroids for which counting bases exactly is #P-hard and yet approximate counting can be done efficiently.

Tableau Correspondences and Representation Theory
Published in Contributions in Algebra and Algebraic Geometry, Contemporary Mathematics, vol. 738, pages 109-124, 2019 • View Publication • BIB
We deduce decompositions of natural representations of general linear groups and symmetric groups from combinatorial bijections involving tableaux. These include some of Howe's dualities, Gelfand models, the Schur-Weyl decomposition of tensor space, and multiplicity-free decompositions indexed by threshold partitions.

Bisplit graphs satisfy the Chen-Chvátal conjecture
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 21 no. 1, ICGT 2018 (May 29, 2019) dmtcs:4813 • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we give a lengthy proof of a small result! A graph is bisplit if its vertex set can be partitioned into three stable sets with two of them inducing a complete bipartite graph. We prove that these graphs satisfy the Chen-Chvátal conjecture: their metric space (in the usual sense) has a universal line (in an unusual sense) or at least as many lines as the number of vertices.

On determination of Zero-sum $\ell$-generalized Schur Numbers for some linear equations
Let $r$, $m$ and $k\geq 2$ be positive integers such that $r\mid k$ and let $v \in \left[ 0,\lfloor \frac{k-1}{2r} \rfloor \right]$ be any integer. For any integer $\ell \in [1, k]$ and $ε\in \{0,1\}$, we let $\mathcal{E}_{v}^{(\ell, ε)}$ be the linear homogeneous equation defined by $\mathcal{E}_{v}^{(\ell, ε)}: x_1 + \cdots + x_{k-(rv+ε)} =x_{k-(rv+ε-1)} +\cdots+ \ell x_{k}$. We denote the number $S_{\mathfrak{z},m}^{(\ell, ε)}(k;r;v)$, which is defined to be the least positive integer $t$ such that for any $m$-coloring $χ: [1, t] \to \{0, 1,\ldots,m-1\}$, there exists a solution $(\hat{x}_1, \hat{x}_2, \ldots, \hat{x}_k)$ to the equation $\mathcal{E}_{v}^{(\ell,ε)}$ that satisfies the $r$-zero-sum condition, namely, $\displaystyle\sum_{i=1}^kχ(\hat{x}_i) \equiv 0\pmod{r}$. In this article, we completely determine the constant $S_{\mathfrak{z}, 2}^{(k,1)}(k;r;0)$, $S_{\mathfrak{z}, m}^{(k-1,1)}(k;r;0)$, $S_{\mathfrak{z}, 2}^{(1,1)}(k;2;1)$ and $S_{\mathfrak{z}, r}^{(1,0)}(k;r;v)$. Also, we prove upper bound for the constants $S_{\mathfrak{z},2}^{(2,1)}(k;2;0)$ and $S_{\mathfrak{z},2}^{(1,1)}(k;2;v)$.

Automorphisms of Kronrod-Reeb graphs of Morse functions on compact surfaces
Published in European Journal of Mathematics, 2020 • View Publication • BIB
Let $M$ be a connected orientable compact surface, $f:M\to\mathbb{R}$ be a Morse function, and $\mathcal{D}_{\mathrm{id}}(M)$ be the group of difeomorphisms of $M$ isotopic to the identity. Denote by $\mathcal{S}'(f)=\{f\circ h = f\mid h\in\mathcal{D}_{\mathrm{id}}(M)\}$ the subgroup of $\mathcal{D}_{\mathrm{id}}(M)$ consisting of difeomorphisms "preserving" $f$, i.e. the stabilizer of $f$ with respect to the right action of $\mathcal{D}_{\mathrm{id}}(M)$ on the space $\mathcal{C}^{\infty}(M,\mathbb{R})$ of smooth functions on $M$. Let also $\mathbf{G}(f)$ be the group of automorphisms of the Kronrod-Reeb graph of $f$ induced by diffeomorphisms belonging to $\mathcal{S}'(f)$. This group is an important ingredient in determining the homotopy type of the orbit of $f$ with respect to the above action of $\mathcal{D}_{\mathrm{id}}(M)$ and it is trivial if $f$ is "generic", i.e. has at most one critical point at each level set $f^{-1}(c)$, $c\in\mathbb{R}$. For the case when $M$ is distinct from $2$-sphere and $2$-torus we present a precise description of the family $\mathbf{G}(M,\mathbb{R})$ of isomorphism classes of groups $\mathbf{G}(f)$, where $f$ runs over all Morse functions on $M$, and of its subfamily $\mathbf{G}^{smp}(M,\mathbb{R}) \subset \mathbf{G}(M,\mathbb{R})$ consisting of groups corresponding to simple Morse functions, i.e. functions having at most one critical point at each connected component of each level set. In fact, $\mathbf{G}(M,\mathbb{R})$, (resp. $\mathbf{G}^{smp}(M,\mathbb{R})$), coincides with the minimal family of isomorphism classes of groups containing the trivial group and closed with respect to direct products and also with respect to wreath products "from the top" with arbitrary finite cyclic groups, (resp. with group $\mathbb{Z}_2$ only).

Hadamard full propelinear codes with associated group $C_{2t}\times C_2$; rank and kernel
We introduce the Hadamard full propelinear codes that factorize as direct product of groups such that their associated group is $C_{2t}\times C_2$. We study the rank, the dimension of the kernel, and the structure of these codes. For several specific parameters we establish some links from circulant Hadamard matrices and the nonexistence of the codes we study. We prove that the dimension of the kernel of these codes is bounded by 3 if the code is nonlinear. We also get an equivalence between circulant complex Hadamard matrix and a type of Hadamard full propelinear code, and we find a new example of circulant complex Hadamard matrix of order 16.
The Martin Gardner Polytopes
Published • View Publication • BIB
In the chapter "Magic with a Matrix" in \emph{Hexaflexagons and Other Mathematical Diversions} (1988), Martin Gardner describes a delightful "party trick" to fill the squares of a $d$-by-$d$ chessboard with nonnegative integers such that the sum of the numbers covered by any placement of $d$ nonthreatening rooks is a given number $N$. We consider such chessboards from a geometric perspective which gives rise to a family of lattice polytopes. The polyhedral structure of these Gardner polytopes explains the underlying trick and enables us to count such chessboards for given $N$ in three different ways. We also observe a curious duality that relates Gardner polytopes to Birkhoff polytopes.

Binary additive MRD codes with minimum distance n-1 must contain a semifield spread set
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we prove a result on the structure of the elements of an additive {\it maximum rank distance (MRD) code} over the field of order two, namely that in some cases such codes must contain a semifield spread set. We use this result to classify additive MRD codes in $M_n(\mathbb{F}_2)$ with minimum distance $n-1$ for $n\leq 6$. Furthermore we present a computational classification of additive MRD codes in $M_4(\mathbb{F}_3)$. The computational evidence indicates that MRD codes of minimum distance $n-1$ are much more rare than MRD codes of minimum distance $n$, i.e. semifield spread sets. In all considered cases, each equivalence class has a known algebraic construction.

A note on palindromic length of Sturmian sequences
Frid, Puzynina and Zamboni (2013) defined the palindromic length of a finite word $w$ as the minimal number of palindromes whose concatenation is equal to $w$. For an infinite word $u$ we study $PL_{u}$, that is, the function that assigns to each positive integer $n$, the maximal palindromic length of factors of length $n$ in $u$. Recently, Frid (2018) proved that $\limsup_{n\to\infty} PL_{u}(n)=+\infty$ for any Sturmian word $u$. We show that there is a constant $K>0$ such that $PL_{u}(n)\leq K\ln n$ for every Sturmian word $u$, and that for each non-decreasing function $f$ with property $\lim_{n\to\infty}f(n)=+\infty$ there is a Sturmian word $u$ such that $PL_{u}(n)=O(f(n))$.

Statistics on Multisets
We offer a new proof that a certain q-analogue of multinomial coeffi- cients furnishes a q-counting of the set of permutations of an associated multiset of positive integers, according to the number of inversions in such arrangements. Our proof uses the fact that such q-multinomial coefficients enumerate certain classes of chains of subspaces of a fnite dimensional vector space over a fnite field of cardinality q. Additionally, we investigate the function that counts the number of permutations of a multiset having a fixed number of inversions.
A Size Condition for Diameter Two Orientable Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
It was conjectured by Koh and Tay [Graphs Combin. 18(4) (2002), 745--756] that for $n\geq 5$ every simple graph of order $n$ and size at least $\binom{n}{2}-n+5$ has an orientation of diameter two. We prove this conjecture and hence determine for every $n\geq 5$ the minimum value of $m$ such that every graph of order $n$ and size $m$ has an orientation of diameter two.
Optimal Grid Drawings of Complete Multipartite Graphs and an Integer Variant of the Algebraic Connectivity
Published • View Publication • BIB
How to draw the vertices of a complete multipartite graph $G$ on different points of a bounded $d$-dimensional integer grid, such that the sum of squared distances between vertices of $G$ is (i) minimized or (ii) maximized? For both problems we provide a characterization of the solutions. For the particular case $d=1$, our solution for (i) also settles the minimum-2-sum problem for complete bipartite graphs; the minimum-2-sum problem was defined by Juvan and Mohar in 1992. Weighted centroidal Voronoi tessellations are the solution for (ii). Such drawings are related with Laplacian eigenvalues of graphs. This motivates us to study which properties of the algebraic connectivity of graphs carry over to the restricted setting of drawings of graphs with integer coordinates.

An upper bound on the number of self-avoiding polygons via joining
Published in Ann. Probab. 46 (2018), no. 1, 175-206 • View Publication • BIB
For $d \geq 2$ and $n \in \mathbb{N}$ even, let $p_n = p_n(d)$ denote the number of length $n$ self-avoiding polygons in $\mathbb{Z}^d$ up to translation. The polygon cardinality grows exponentially, and the growth rate $\lim_{n \in 2\mathbb{N}} p_n^{1/n} \in (0,\infty)$ is called the connective constant and denoted by $μ$. Madras [J. Statist. Phys. 78 (1995) no. 3--4, 681--699] has shown that $p_n μ^{-n} \leq C n^{-1/2}$ in dimension $d=2$. Here we establish that $p_n μ^{-n} \leq n^{-3/2 + o(1)}$ for a set of even $n$ of full density when $d=2$. We also consider a certain variant of self-avoiding walk and argue that, when $d \geq 3$, an upper bound of $n^{-2 + d^{-1} + o(1)}$ holds on a full density set for the counterpart in this variant model of this normalized polygon cardinality.

Modified Erdös--Ginzburg--Ziv Constants for $\mathbb Z/n\mathbb Z$ and $(\mathbb Z/n\mathbb Z)^2$
For an abelian group $G$ and an integer $t > 0$, the \emph{modified Erdös--Ginzburg--Ziv constant} $s_t'(G)$ is the smallest integer $\ell$ such that any zero-sum sequence of length at least $\ell$ with elements in $G$ contains a zero-sum subsequence (not necessarily consecutive) of length $t$. We compute $s_t'(G)$ for $G = \mathbb Z/n\mathbb Z$ and for $t = n$, $G = (\mathbb Z/n\mathbb Z)^2$.

Bent Vectorial Functions, Codes and Designs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Bent functions, or equivalently, Hadamard difference sets in the elementary Abelian group $(\gf(2^{2m}), +)$, have been employed to construct symmetric and quasi-symmetric designs having the symmetric difference property. The main objective of this paper is to use bent vectorial functions for a construction of a two-parameter family of binary linear codes that do not satisfy the conditions of the Assmus-Mattson theorem, but nevertheless hold $2$-designs. A new coding-theoretic characterization of bent vectorial functions is presented.
Alignment Strength and Correlation for Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
When two graphs have a correlated Bernoulli distribution, we prove that the alignment strength of their natural bijection strongly converges to a novel measure of graph correlation $ρ_T$ that neatly combines intergraph with intragraph distribution parameters. Within broad families of the random graph parameter settings, we illustrate that exact graph matching runtime and also matchability are both functions of $ρ_T$, with thresholding behavior starkly illustrated in matchability.

No lattice tiling of $\mathbb{Z}^n$ by Lee Sphere of radius 2
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A, Vol. 171, April 2020 • View Publication • BIB
We prove the nonexistence of lattice tilings of $\mathbb{Z}^n$ by Lee spheres of radius $2$ for all dimensions $n\geq 3$. This implies that the Golomb-Welch conjecture is true when the common radius of the Lee spheres equals $2$ and $2n^2+2n+1$ is a prime. As a direct consequence, we also answer an open question in the degree-diameter problem of graph theory: the order of any abelian Cayley graph of diameter $2$ and degree larger than $5$ cannot meet the abelian Cayley Moore bound.

On the isometric path partition problem
Published • View Publication • BIB
The isometric path cover (partition) problem of a graph is to find a minimum set of isometric paths which cover (partition) the vertex set of the graph. The isometric path cover (partition) number of a graph is the cardinality a minimum isometric path cover (partition). We prove that the isometric path partition problem and the isometric $k$-path partition problem for $k\geq 3$ are NP-complete on general graphs. Fisher and Fitzpatrick \cite{FiFi01} have shown that the isometric path cover number of $(r\times r)$-dimensional grid is $\lceil 2r/3\rceil$. We show that the isometric path cover (partition) number of $(r\times s)$-dimensional grid is $s$ when $r \geq s(s-1)$. We establish that the isometric path cover (partition) number of $(r\times r)$-dimensional torus is $r$ when $r$ is even and is either $r$ or $r+1$ when $r$ is odd. Then, we demonstrate that the isometric path cover (partition) number of an $r$-dimensional Benes network is $2^r$. In addition, we provide partial solutions for the isometric path cover (partition) problems for cylinder and multi-dimensional grids.

Hamilton cycles in vertex-transitive graphs of order a product of two primes
A step forward is made in a long standing Lovász's problem regarding hamiltonicity of vertex-transitive graphs by showing that every connected vertex-transitive graph of order a product of two primes, other than the Petersen graph, contains a Hamilton cycle. Essential tools used in the proof range from classical results on existence of Hamilton cycles, such as Chvátal's theorem and Jackson's theorem, to certain results on polynomial representations of quadratic residues at primitive roots in finite fields.
