We study a variation of Bagchi and Datta's $σ$-vector of a simplicial complex $C$, whose entries are defined as weighted averages of Betti numbers of induced subcomplexes of $C$. We show that these invariants satisfy an Alexander-Dehn-Sommerville type identity, and behave nicely under natural operations on triangulated manifolds and spheres such as connected sums and bistellar flips.
In the language of commutative algebra, the invariants are weighted sums of graded Betti numbers of the Stanley-Reisner ring of $C$. This interpretation implies, by a result of Adiprasito, that the Billera-Lee sphere maximizes these invariants among triangulated spheres with a given $f$-vector. For the first entry of $σ$, we extend this bound to the class of strongly connected pure complexes.
As an application, we show how upper bounds on $σ$ can be used to obtain lower bounds on the $f$-vector of triangulated $4$-manifolds with transitive symmetry on vertices and prescribed vector of Betti numbers.

In [2] we introduced a new notion of Wilf equivalence of integer partitions and proved that rook equivalence implies Wilf equivalence. In the present paper we prove the converse and thereby establish a new criterion for rook equivalence. We also refine two of the standard criteria for rook equivalence and establish another new one involving what we call \emph{nested sequences of L's}.

The subjects of rook equivalence and Wilf equivalence have both attracted considerable attention over the last half-century. In this paper we introduce a new notion of Wilf equivalence for integer partitions, and, using this notion, we prove that rook equivalence implies Wilf equivalence. We also prove that if we refine the notions of rook and Wilf equivalence in a natural way, then these two notions coincide. In [6] we prove that Wilf equivalence implies rook equivalence.
On the Distribution of Range for Tree-Indexed Random Walks

We study tree-indexed random walks as introduced by Benjamini, Häggström, and Mossel, i.e. labelings of a tree for which adjacent vertices have labels differing by 1. It is a conjecture of those authors that the distribution of the range for any such tree is dominated by that of a path on the same number of edges. The two main variants of this conjecture considered in the literature are the $\textit{standard}$ walks, in which adjacent vertices must have labels differing by $\textit{exactly}$ 1, and $\textit{lazy}$ walks, in which adjacent vertices must have labels differing by $\textit{at most}$ 1. We confirm this conjecture for all trees in the lazy case and provide some partial results in the standard case.
On the Number of Rumer Diagrams
In this paper we both review the famous article "Eine fur die Valenztheorie geeignete Basis der binaren Vektorinvarianten" of G. Rumer, E. Teller, and H. Weyl on Rumer diagrams and use a powerful old result from algebraic geometry to enumerate these diagrams with given numbers of atoms and valence bonds.

We extend the usual notion of fully commutative elements from the Coxeter groups to the complex reflection groups. Then we decompose the sets of fully commutative elements into natural subsets according to their combinatorial properties, and investigate the structure of these decompositions. As a consequence, we enumerate and describe the form of these elements in the complex reflection groups.
Symmetric Dellac configurations
We define symmetric Dellac configurations as the Dellac configurations that are symmetric with respect to their centers. The symmetric Dellac configurations whose lengths are even were previously introduced by Fang and Fourier under the name of symplectic Dellac configurations, to parametrize the torus fixed points of symplectic degenerate flag varieties. In general, symmetric Dellac configurations generate the Poincaré polynomials of (odd or even) symplectic or orthogonal versions of the degenerate flag varieties. In this paper, we give several combinatorial interpretations of the polynomial extensions $(D_n(x))_{n \geq~0}$ of median Euler numbers, defined by Randrianarivony and Zeng, in terms of objects that we name extended Dellac configurations and which generate symmetric Dellac configurations. As a consequence, the cardinalities of the odd and even symmetric Dellac configurations are respectively given by the two adjoining sequences $(l_n)_{n \geq~0} = (1, 1, 3, 21, 267,\dots)$ and $(r_n)_{n \geq~0} = (1,2,10,98,1594,\dots)$, defined as specializations of the polynomials $(D_n(x))_{n \geq~0}$.
Graph-Based Controller Synthesis for Safety-Constrained, Resilient Systems

Resilience to damage, component degradation, and adversarial action is a critical consideration in design of autonomous systems. In addition to designing strategies that seek to prevent such negative events, it is vital that an autonomous system remains able to achieve its control objective even if the system partially loses control authority. While loss of authority limits the system's control capabilities, it may be possible to use the remaining authority in such a way that the system's control objectives remain achievable. In this paper, we consider the problem of optimal design for an autonomous system with discrete-time linear dynamics where the available control actions depend on adversarial input produced as a result of loss of authority. The central question is how to partition the set of control inputs that the system can apply in such a way that the system state remains within a safe set regardless of an adversarial input limiting the available control inputs to a single partition elements. We interpret such a problem first as a variant of a safety game, and then as a problem of existence of an appropriate edge labeling on a graph. We obtain conditions for existence and a computationally efficient algorithm for determining a system design and a control policy that preserve system safety. We illustrate our results on two examples: a damaged autonomous vehicle and a method of communication over a channel that ensures a minimal running digital sum.
Monotonicity properties for ranks of overpartitions

The rank of partitions play an important role in the combinatorial interpretations of several Ramanujan's famous congruence formulas. In 2005 and 2008, the $D$-rank and $M_2$-rank of an overpartition were introduced by Lovejoy, respectively. Let $\overline{N}(m,n)$ and $\overline{N2}(m,n)$ denote the number of overpartitions of $n$ with $D$-rank $m$ and $M_2$-rank $m$, respectively. In 2014, Chan and Mao proposed a conjecture on monotonicity properties of $\overline{N}(m,n)$ and $\overline{N2}(m,n)$. In this paper, we prove the Chan-Mao monotonicity conjecture. To be specific, we show that for any integer $m$ and nonnegative integer $n$, $\overline{N2}(m,n)\leq \overline{N2}(m,n+1)$; and for $(m,n)\neq (0,4)$ with $n\neq\, |m| +2$, we have $\overline{N}(m,n)\leq \overline{N}(m,n+1)$. Furthermore, when $m$ increases, we prove that $\overline{N}(m,n)\geq \overline{N}(m+2,n)$ and $\overline{N2}(m,n)\geq \overline{N2}(m+2,n)$ for any $m,n\geq 0$, which is an analogue of Chan and Mao's result for partitions.

We obtain $q$-analogues of several series for powers of $π$. For example, the identity $$\sum_{k=0}^\infty\frac{(-1)^k}{(2k+1)^3}=\frac{π^3}{32}$$ has the following $q$-analogue: \begin{equation*} \sum_{k=0}^\infty(-1)^k\frac{q^{2k}(1+q^{2k+1})}{(1-q^{2k+1})^3}=\frac{(q^2;q^4)_{\infty}^2(q^4;q^4)_{\infty}^6} {(q;q^2)_{\infty}^4}, \end{equation*} where $q$ is any complex number with $|q|<1$. We also give $q$-analogues of four new series for powers of $π$ found by the second author.
Motifs, Coherent Configurations and Second Order Network Generation

In this paper we illuminate some algebraic-combinatorial structure underlying the second order networks (SONETS) random graph model of Nykamp, Zhao and collaborators. In particular we show that this algorithm is deeply connected with a certain homogeneous coherent configuration, a non-commuting generalization of the classical Johnson scheme. This algebraic structure underlies certain surprising identities (that do not appear to have been previously observed) satisfied by the covariance matrices in the Nykamp-Zhao scheme. We show that an understanding of this algebraic structure leads to simplified numerical methods for carrying out the linear algebra required to implement the SONETS algorithm. We also show that this structure extends naturally to the problem of generating random subgraphs of graphs other than the complete directed graph.

The Boolean ring $B$ of measurable subsets of the unit interval, modulo sets of measure zero, has proper radical ideals (e.g., $\{0\})$ that are closed under the natural metric, but has no prime ideals closed under that metric; hence closed radical ideals are not, in general, intersections of closed prime ideals. Moreover, $B$ is known to be complete in its metric. Together, these facts answer a question posed by J.Gleason. From this example, rings of arbitrary characteristic with the corresponding properties are obtained.
The result that $B$ is complete in its metric is generalized to show that if $L$ is a lattice given with a metric satisfying identically either the inequality $d(x\vee y,\,x\vee z)\leq d(y,z)$ or the inequality $d(x\wedge y,\,x\wedge z)\leq d(y,z),$ and if in $L$ every increasing Cauchy sequence converges and every decreasing Cauchy sequence converges, then every Cauchy sequence in $L$ converges; i.e., $L$ is complete as a metric space.
We show by example that if the above inequalities are replaced by the weaker conditions $d(x,\,x\vee y)\leq d(x,y),$ respectively $d(x,\,x\wedge y)\leq d(x,y),$ the completeness conclusion can fail. We end with two open questions.
Rigidity of symmetric frameworks in normed spaces

We develop a combinatorial rigidity theory for symmetric bar-joint frameworks in a general finite dimensional normed space. In the case of rotational symmetry, matroidal Maxwell-type sparsity counts are identified for a large class of $d$-dimensional normed spaces (including all $\ell^p$ spaces with $p\not=2$). Complete combinatorial characterisations are obtained for half-turn rotation in the $\ell^1$ and $\ell^\infty$-plane. As a key tool, a new Henneberg-type inductive construction is developed for the matroidal class of $(2,2,0)$-gain-tight graphs.

Let $Γ$ be a locally finite graph, $L$ the normalized Laplacian of $Γ$. If $Γ$ is uniformy locally finite, i.e. if each vertex has no more than $d$ adjacent vertices, then the matrix of $L$ (with respect to the standard basis) has no more than $d+1$ non-zero entries in each row and in each column. We consider the class of locally finite graphs, for which the Laplacian can be approximated by matrices of this type with arbitrary $d$. We provide examples of locally finite graphs which are or are not in this class, and show that the graphs from this class share certain regularity property: vertices of high degree cannot have too many adjacent vertices of low degree.
A note on hypergraph colorings
Let $t\geqslant 2$ and $s\geqslant 1$ be two integers. Define a $(t,s)$-coloring of a hypergraph to be a coloring of its vertices using $t$ colors such that each color appears on each edge at least $s$ times. In this note, we provide a sufficient condition for the existence of a $(t,s)$-coloring of a hypergraph by using the symmetric lopsided version of Lovász Local Lemma. Our result generalizes several known results on hypergraph colorings.

For a graph $G$, let $σ_{2}(G)$ be the minimum degree sum of two non-adjacent vertices in $G$. A chord of a cycle in a graph $G$ is an edge of $G$ joining two non-consecutive vertices of the cycle. In this paper, we prove the following result, which is an extension of a result of Brandt et al. (J. Graph Theory 24 (1997) 165-173) for large graphs: For positive integers $k$ and $c$, there exists an integer $f(k,c)$ such that, if $G$ is a graph of order $n \ge f(k, c)$ and $σ_{2}(G) \ge n$, then $G$ can be partitioned into $k$ vertex-disjoint cycles, each of which has at least $c$ chords.
$PC$-polynomial of graph
We define $PC$-polynomial of graph which is related to clique, (in)dependence and matching polynomials. The growth rate of partially commutative monoid is equal to the largest root $β(G)$ of $PC$-polynomial of the corresponding graph.
The random algebra is defined in such way that its growth rate equals the largest root of $PC$-polynomial of random graph. We prove that for almost all graphs all sufficiently large real roots of $PC$-polynomial lie in neighbourhoods of roots of $PC$-polynomial of random graph. We show how to calculate the series expansions of the latter roots. The average value of $β(G)$ over all graphs with the same number of vertices is computed.
We found the graphs on which the maximal value of $β(G)$ with fixed numbers of vertices and edges is reached. From this, we derive the upper bound of $β(G)$. Modulo one assumption, we do the same for minimal value of $β(G)$.
We study the Nordhaus---Gaddum bounds of $β(G)+β(\bar{G})$ and $β(G)β(\bar{G})$.

Convex Union Representability and Convex Codes

We introduce and investigate $d$-convex union representable complexes: the complexes that arise as the nerve of a finite collection of convex open sets in $\mathbb R^d$ whose union is also convex. Chen, Frick, and Shiu recently proved that such complexes are collapsible and asked if all collapsible complexes are convex union representable. We disprove this by showing that there exist shellable and collapsible complexes that are not convex union representable; there also exist non-evasive complexes that are not convex union representable. In the process we establish several necessary conditions for a complex to be convex union representable such as: that such a complex $Δ$ collapses onto the star of any face of $Δ$, that the Alexander dual of $Δ$ must also be collapsible, and that if $k$ facets of $Δ$ contain all free faces of $Δ$, then $Δ$ is $(k-1)$-representable. We also discuss some sufficient conditions for a complex to be convex union representable. The notion of convex union representability is intimately related to the study of convex neural codes. In particular, our results provide new families of examples of non-convex neural codes.
