Regular Polygon Surfaces
A $\textit{regular polygon surface}$ $M$ is a surface graph $(Σ, Γ)$ together with a continuous map $ψ$ from $Σ$ into Euclidean 3-space which maps faces to regular Euclidean polygons. When $Σ$ is homeomorphic to the sphere and the degree of every face of $Γ$ is five, we prove that $M$ can be realized as the boundary of a union of dodecahedra glued together along common facets. Under the same assumptions but when the faces of $Γ$ have degree four or eight, we prove that $M$ can be realized as the boundary of a union of cubes and octagonal prisms glued together along common facets. We exhibit counterexamples showing the failure of both theorems for higher genus surfaces.

The slack realization space of a matroid
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce a new model for the realization space of a matroid, which is obtained from a variety defined by a saturated determinantal ideal, called the slack ideal, coming from the vertex-hyperplane incidence matrix of the matroid. This is inspired by a similar model for the slack realization space of a polytope. We show how to use these ideas to certify non-realizability of matroids, and describe an explicit relationship to the standard Grassmann-Plücker realization space model. We also exhibit a way of detecting projectively unique matroids via their slack ideals by introducing a toric ideal that can be associated to any matroid.
Brick-wall lattice paths and applications
We introduce a new type of lattice path, called brick-wall lattice path, and we derive a formula which counts the number of paths on these lattices imposing certain restrictions on the Cartesian plane. Connections to the Fibonacci sequence, as well as to other sequences of numbers, are given. Finally, we use these brick-wall lattice paths to determine the first two non-zero coefficients of the reliability polynomials associated with particular two-terminal networks known as hammocks.

Unavoidable Subtournaments in Tournaments with Large Chromatic Number
For a set H of tournaments, we say H is heroic if every tournament, not containing any member of H as a subtournament, has bounded chromatic number. Berger et al. explicitly characterized all heroic sets containing one tournament. Motivated by this result, we study heroic sets containing two tournaments. We give a necessary condition for a set containing two tournaments to be heroic. We also construct infinitely many minimal heroic sets of size two.

Quasi-random multilinear polynomials
Published in Israel J. Math., 2019 • View Publication • BIB
We consider multilinear Littlewood polynomials, polynomials in $n$ variables in which a specified set of monomials $U$ have $\pm 1$ coefficients, and all other coefficients are $0$. We provide upper and lower bounds (which are close for $U$ of degree below $\log n$) on the minimum, over polynomials $h$ consistent with $U$, of the maximum of $|h|$ over $\pm 1$ assignments to the variables. (This is a variant of a question posed by Erdös regarding the maximum on the unit disk of univariate polynomials of given degree with unit coefficients.) We outline connections to the theory of quasi-random graphs and hypergraphs, and to statistical mechanics models. Our methods rely on the analysis of the Gale-Berlekamp game; on the constructive side of the generic chaining method; on a Khintchine-type inequality for polynomials of degree greater than $1$; and on Bernstein's approximation theory inequality.

On Cannon cone types and vector-valued multiplicative functions for genus-two-surface-group
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider Cannon cone types for a surface group of genus $g$, and we give algebraic criteria for establishing the cone type of a given cone and of all its sub-cones. We also re-prove that the number of cone types is exactly $8g(2g - 1)+1.$ In the genus $2$ case, we explicitly provide the $48\times 48$ matrix of cone types, $M,$ and we prove that $M$ is primitive, hence Perron-Frobenius. Finally we define vector-valued multiplicative functions and we show how to compute their values by means of $M$.

Partitions of hypergraphs under variable degeneracy constraints
Published • View Publication • BIB
The paper deals with partitions of hypergraphs into induced subhypergraphs satisfying constraints on their degeneracy. Our hypergraphs may have multiple edges, but no loops. Given a hypergraph $H$ and a sequence $f=(f_1,f_2, \ldots, f_p)$ of $p\geq 1$ vertex functions $f_i:V(H) \to \mathbb{N}_0$ such that $f_1(v)+f_2(v)+ \cdots + f_p(v)\geq d_H(v)$ for all $v\in V(H)$, we want to find a sequence $(H_1,H_2, \ldots, H_p)$ of vertex disjoint induced subhypergraphs containing all vertices of $H$ such that each hypergraph $H_i$ is strictly $f_i$-degenerate, that is, for every non-empty subhypergraph $H'\subseteq H_i$ there is a vertex $v\in V(H')$ such that $d_{H'}(v)<f_i(v)$. Our main result in this paper says that such a sequence of hypergraphs exists if and only if $(H,f)$ is not a so-called hard pair. Hard pairs form a recursively defined family of configurations, obtained from three basic types of configurations by the operation of merging a vertex. Our main result has several interesting applications related to generalized hypergraph coloring problems.

The $γ$-Vectors of Pascal-like Triangles Defined by Riordan Arrays
We define and characterize the $γ$-matrix associated to Pascal-like matrices that are defined by ordinary and exponential Riordan arrays. We also define and characterize the $γ$-matrix of the reversions of these triangles, in the case of ordinary Riordan arrays. We are led to the $γ$-matrices of a one-parameter family of generalized Narayana triangles. Thus these matrices generalize the matrix of $γ$-vectors of the associahedron. The principal tools used are the bivariate generating functions of the triangles and Jacobi continued fractions.

Finite Groups Generated in Low Real Codimension
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the intersection lattice of the arrangement $\mathcal{A}^G$ of subspaces fixed by subgroups of a finite linear group $G$. When $G$ is a reflection group, this arrangement is precisely the hyperplane reflection arrangement of $G$. We generalize the notion of finite reflection groups. We say that a group $G$ is generated (resp. strictly generated) in codimension $k$ if it is generated by its elements that fix point-wise a subspace of codimension at most $k$ (resp. precisely $k$). If $G$ is generated in codimension two, we show that the intersection lattice of $\mathcal{A}^G$ is atomic. We prove that the alternating subgroup $\mathsf{Alt}(W)$ of a reflection group $W$ is strictly generated in codimension two, moreover, the subspace arrangement of $\mathsf{Alt}(W)$ is the truncation at rank two of the reflection arrangement $\mathcal{A}^W$. Further, we compute the intersection lattice of all finite subgroups of $GL_3(\mathbb{R})$, and moreover, we emphasize the groups that are "minimally generated in real codimension two", i.e, groups that are strictly generated in codimension two but have no real reflection representations. We also provide several examples of groups generated in higher codimension.
Factorization length distribution for affine semigroups I: numerical semigroups with three generators
Published in European J. Combinatorics 78 (2019), 190-204 • View Publication • BIB
Most factorization invariants in the literature extract extremal factorization behavior, such as the maximum and minimum factorization lengths. Invariants of intermediate size, such as the mean, median, and mode factorization lengths are more subtle. We use techniques from analysis and probability to describe the asymptotic behavior of these invariants. Surprisingly, the asymptotic median factorization length is described by a number that is usually irrational.

Constructions of Augmented Orthogonal Arrays
Published • View Publication • BIB
Augmented orthogonal arrays (AOAs) were introduced by Stinson, who showed the equivalence between ideal ramp schemes and augmented orthogonal arrays (Discrete Math. 341 (2018), 299-307). In this paper, we show that there is an AOA$(s,t,k,v)$ if and only if there is an OA$(t,k,v)$ which can be partitioned into $v^{t-s}$ subarrays, each being an OA$(s,k,v)$, and that there is a linear AOA$(s,t,k,q)$ if and only if there is a linear maximum distance separable (MDS) code of length $k$ and dimension $t$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$ which contains a linear MDS subcode of length $k$ and dimension $s$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$. Some constructions for AOAs and some new infinite classes of AOAs are also given.

Counting Matchings via Capacity Preserving Operators
Published • View Publication • BIB
The notion of the capacity of a polynomial was introduced by Gurvits around 2005, originally to give drastically simplified proofs of the Van der Waerden lower bound for permanents of doubly stochastic matrices and Schrijver's inequality for perfect matchings of regular bipartite graphs. Since this seminal work, the notion of capacity has been utilized to bound various combinatorial quantities and to give polynomial-time algorithms to approximate such quantities (e.g., the number of bases of a matroid). These types of results are often proven by giving bounds on how much a particular differential operator can change the capacity of a given polynomial. In this paper, we unify the theory surrounding such capacity preserving operators by giving tight capacity preservation bounds for all nondegenerate real stability preservers. We then use this theory to give a new proof of a recent result of Csikvári, which settled Friedland's lower matching conjecture.

On linear codes and distinct weights
We provide a combinatorial construction for linear codes attaining the maximum possible number of distinct weights. We then introduce the related problem of determining the existence of linear codes with an arbitrary number of distinct non-zero weights, and we completely determine a solution in the binary case.

The distribution of the maximum number of common neighbors in the random graph
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $Δ_{k;n}$ be the maximum number of common neighbors of a set of $k$ vertices in $G(n,p)$. In this paper, we find $a_n$ and $σ_n$ such that $\frac{Δ_{k;n}-a_n}{σ_n}$ converges in distribution to a random variable having the standard Gumbel distribution.

Optimal $2$-D $(n\times m,3,2,1)$-optical orthogonal codes and related equi-difference conflict avoiding codes
Published • View Publication • BIB
This paper focuses on constructions for optimal $2$-D $(n\times m,3,2,1)$-optical orthogonal codes with $m\equiv 0\ ({\rm mod}\ 4)$. An upper bound on the size of such codes is established. It relies heavily on the size of optimal equi-difference $1$-D $(m,3,2,1)$-optical orthogonal codes, which is closely related to optimal equi-difference conflict avoiding codes with weight $3$. The exact number of codewords of an optimal $2$-D $(n\times m,3,2,1)$-optical orthogonal code is determined for $n=1,2$, $m\equiv 0 \pmod{4}$, and $n\equiv 0 \pmod{3}$, $m\equiv 8 \pmod{16}$ or $m\equiv 32 \pmod{64}$ or $m\equiv 4,20 \pmod{48}$.

On Dividing by Two in Constructive Mathematics
A classic result due to Bernstein states that in set theory with classical logic, but without the axiom of choice, for all sets $X$ and $Y$, if $X \times 2 \cong Y \times 2$ then also $X \cong Y$. We show that this cannot be done in constructive mathematics by giving some examples of toposes where it fails.

Factorization theorems for classical group characters, with applications to alternating sign matrices and plane partitions
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 165 (2019) 78-105 • View Publication • BIB
We show that, for a certain class of partitions and an even number of variables of which half are reciprocals of the other half, Schur polynomials can be factorized into products of odd and even orthogonal characters. We also obtain related factorizations involving sums of two Schur polynomials, and certain odd-sized sets of variables. Our results generalize the factorization identities proved by Ciucu and Krattenthaler (Advances in combinatorial mathematics, 39-59, 2009) for partitions of rectangular shape. We observe that if, in some of the results, the partitions are taken to have rectangular or double-staircase shapes and all of the variables are set to 1, then factorization identities for numbers of certain plane partitions, alternating sign matrices and related combinatorial objects are obtained.

Combinatorial analysis of growth models for series-parallel networks
Published in Combinator. Probab. Comp. 28 (2019) 574-599 • View Publication • BIB
We give combinatorial descriptions of two stochastic growth models for series-parallel networks introduced by Hosam Mahmoud by encoding the growth process via recursive tree structures. Using decompositions of the tree structures and applying analytic combinatorics methods allows a study of quantities in the corresponding series-parallel networks. For both models we obtain limiting distribution results for the degree of the poles and the length of a random source-to-sink path, and furthermore we get asymptotic results for the expected number of source-to-sink paths. Moreover, we introduce generalizations of these stochastic models by encoding the growth process of the networks via further important increasing tree structures and give an analysis of some parameters.
